Make sure your totes have a 2 or 5 on the bottom which means they are safe to grow or store foods in. Any other numbers mean the totes are made from chemical recycles that can be absorbed into the soil which will transfer into your food plants and in your produce that you eat. By the way, Your little one is absolutely adorable!

1, 2, 4, and 5 are considered food grade. You want to avoid 3 or any other container without any number at all i.e., Dollar Store buckets and plant pots. My 18-gal Sterilite totes are a 5.

I've gardened for many years. With the world in such a crazy state, I'm going to try 4-6 totes of veggies and share with my elderly neighbors next door. I had a dying tree taken down in the front yard before the snows came this past winter. I'm going to use some of those fresh wood chips to partially fill the totes. Last year my dogs ate tomatoes, peppers and strawberries I grew in the yard ! Now the totes can go in the sunny front yard so the harvest will be people food. 😊 Thank .you for your inexpensive ideas. Your little one is adorbs!! Peace to all from Buffalo, NY.

Community gardens would be even more useful than the grassy parks covering sections of a town or city. Maybe those with a lower income can pay less or nothing to rent a square of the community garden. I'm not sure how it works because my own small town lacks one, but I know they exist elsewhere.

With the composting material, something I learned doing the very same thing, is that some plants do like a deeper depth of soil for their roots. I learned the hard way that plants like pumpkins, watermelon, tomatoes, winter squash and sweet potatoes all like 24+ inches of soil to grow in. I’m in New Mexico and have found tubs a great addition to my garden.

Keep up the good work and educating people about growing food. I used to have a half acre truck garden in Missoula, Montana. Now I'm 80, on my own, and have a tiny space at my apartment complex. I live at over 6,000 ft. elevation, in a high mountain valley... where it gets routinely 40 below zero in eight months - long winters, where the ground is frozen solid until May.

We moved from Virginia to Central Fl into a senior citizen community and they have very very strick rules about gardening and every thing else. A bit of advice. Use a much larger drill bit for drainage.l placed about 8 totes on the cement patio and tomatoes, peas and sweet potatoes but the squash, zuchinni and cucumbers did'nt seem to like the poor drainage after several days of rain. I"m not sure but I think larger drainage holes would have helped

Great idea! I made some great hugels with all the sticks and roots, and clay left over from digging- up gardens, and leaves. Those days are past for me and needng ideas for rased beds. Your little one is precious.

I live in Cleveland Ohio as well and the weather keeps going up and down. I'm going to try to start planting around the end of April. We should be clear from the freezing temperatures by then 🤞🏼

Robbie is cool. she saved me from animals digging by suggesting tulle to cover them. Also, got the solar fountains.

We were considering using these for peas and string beans. Thinking to line the backyard and let the vines grow on the chain link fence.

Unfortunately, ants are climbing up my chain link and getting on my string beans and aphids too
Only place where I have them is on my chain link fence😟

But unfortunately plastic is not good for the environment but unfortunately some of us do you have to do that that’s true I have to go my stuff on my deck and in my mudroom because I live in a forest and too many animals.

Robbie and Gary have been using cardboard boxes also. As along as the cardboard does not have writing on it. If not planting directly in soil I use for weed control.
