literally best jacket ever owned. this is my second purchase of the same style. I lost the first jacket.
Just got this jacket love it! Pairing it up with the Alpha leaf Gen2 . Should do the job for years .
Bought and massively impressed. Pay more but get quality
I have the hoodless jacket version. Awesome jacket. Comfy super light and really surprisingly warm for it's bulk. Fairly frequent washing with Grangers helps water slide off in light rain too. Really worth the 200 quid I paid.
Thanks for the comment! A good Trekitt tip to avoid using up all of your Grangers is to tumble dry the jacket after washing on a low heat. This effectively does the same job (restores the water repellency) without the use of the Grangers. Regards, Harry.
Trekitt Mountain Sports Brilliant thanks!
I have been buying Atom AR hoody every 5 years for 20 years.
I bought a red one in around 2000?, then a black one in 2005, a red one in 2010.
It's overpriced, but Atom AR is only $300, a lot cheaper than $1000 jakects, then I use one for 10 years.
I use a red one and a black one for 10 years each, then buy a new one after that.
Buying one every 5 years cost me $60 every winter. It's not expensive at all.
I also recommend belts, Index backpack, Index 10+10 as cheap good products.
Could u tell me how to wash it?
Excellent product review especially on sizing which can swing greatly from one Arcteryx garment to another. (they are tough for proper fit for those of us without a nearby dealer) . Size Large it will be for me based on this review!
Because you have posted wonderful reviews of both, could you let me know what you think the warmth and breathability differences are between Atom AR and Mammut Rime IN Flex (standard version, not the light version) Thanks for the great content!
Atom AR is warmer, Rime is more breathable. I'd choose the Rime for active use and the Atom as a slower-moving but arguably more versatile option.
Thank you for the excellent content! Can I ask if you’d recommend this over the ATOM LT (I will be wearing the ZETA AR shell ) many thanks
It just depends how much warmth you need. AR is obviously warmer and doesn't have the breathable side panels, while the LT tends to be the more versatile option here in the UK. Kind regards, Harry.
@@trekitt thank you Harry - Greatly appreciated! :-)
Such a shame they discontinued it and started the heavyweight version, this was literally a perfect jacket
How does it compare to hagløfs essens mimic jacket. Are they the same type and which is the best
They're both brilliant options which simply go about providing warmth in slightly different ways. Since there's not much separating the two, we'd recommend trying both on and basing your purchase on which fits you best.
Love the video! I'm trying to decide between an Atom AR and a Thorium AR to use as a camp jacket down to -17C at the coldest. It would be layered with a base layer, fleece and hard shell whenever needed. Which would you go with?
I know this isn't the ideal answer but I went with both. If it is cool and dry down is ideal if it is wet then the synthetic is the better bet. I suppose having a shell can somewhat mitigate the need for synthetic insulation but I like to have the best kit for the task. If I could only choose one I would go with the thorium AR
What are you wearing underneath the Atom to stay warm? I saw that it's a Rab.
Paul is wearing a Rab AL Pull; the closest comparable item we stock now is the Nucleus Pull-on: www.trekitt.co.uk/35677/products/rab-mens-nucleus-pull-on-steel.aspx
I’m 6ft 4, I think I may be a large, the only measurement that’s above what the sizing guide quotes is the sleeve, I’m at 92cm, what is Paul’s sleeve length? What do you think?
Unfortunately I don't know his sleeve length, but I do know that Paul's overall wingspan is around 195cm and the Atom's sleeves are long enough in a large. Kind regards, Harry.
Does the hood not bother you when you pair it with an outer shell? I can't decide whether to get a hood or hoodless jacket.
There are benefits to both. Hoodless is far easier for layering, however if you tend to mostly wear the jacket without a shell over the top, it's nice to have the option of a hood when you stop to add additional warmth. .
Given that the hood on the Atom AR is close fitting, and most hardshell jackets have large helmet compatible hoods, then you can layer them perfectly. But the Atom LT is more suitable as a midlayer as it’s not as warm and more breathable.
Do you have experiences with the Cerium LT?
Would you recommend this (ATOM AR) or the Cerium LT for just cold non-wet weather.
One problem that gets me is I am worried about the cerium fabric
Yes we do have a fair bit of experience with the Cerium, I'll link our video for it below. The Cerium LT will have about the same warmth as the Atom AR but will pack down much smaller; however it won't perform in the rain. The Atom's face fabric is tougher, so if you're climbing, scrambling or giving the jacket a tonne of abuse, you'd be better off with the Atom. If you're likely never to use it in wet weather and require a tiny pack size, the Cerium is a great option.

Trekitt Mountain Sports thank you
Hi, I'm trying to work out sizes now, i'm 34 waist but 190cm tall. Would you recommend L or XL
Most likely a large, but it also depends on your chest/shoulders and whether you'll be layering underneath it. A large will fit those with around a 43" chest, while the x-large is more around the 46" mark. Kind regards, Harry.
Hi everyone!
I live in Stockholm and during the winter it can be quite cold, like -20 C at wors.
Should i go for the AR If worn as a outer?/ would the AR be too warm if worn as a midlayer? AR vs LT?And can someone please explain the difference between the Atom & Proton series?
Please feel free to share thoughts and knowledge.
Thanks in advance,
Sincerely
Hi Jesper, lets start from the first question and make our way down:
1. The Atom AR is perfectly suitable as an outer layer as long as you're not in heavy consistent rain; it will resist wind, rain and snow whilst keeping you nice and toasty. In regards to use in -20C temperatures, this is dependant on so many variables so I can't give an exact 'yes or no' answer, however you should be fine. If it's a little cold, add a thicker baselayer or a warm midlayer.
2. As a midlayer it will most likely be a little warm, but this depends on you as a person and how many layers you have on underneath (thin or thick baselayer, for example). It also depends on your activity; are you using the jacket purely for everyday use or will it be used in the mountains?
3. The AR features more insulation and ditches the breathable side panels, meaning it is far warmer but less breathable. The LT has less insulation and breathable, air-permeable side panels, therefore it's better as a midlayer or an outer layer in less severe conditions.
4. The Atom's are wind resistant whereas the Proton's are wind-permeable (they'll let wind through). The Proton range is therefore better as a midlayer or when working hard, but the Atom is arguably more versatile.
Hope that helps!
great vid mate, ty for the info
please do review about PROTON AR HOODY MEN'S
I'm afraid we don't stock the Proton, so we unfortunately can't do an Inside Look. If we decide to stock it in the future, we'll make sure to get one done.
Please do! (Stock them and review them!)@@trekitt
Can you compare it to the Fjallraven Keb Touring Down Jacket?
The largest difference between the two is that the Keb features a down insulation whereas the Atom uses synthetic. This means the Atom will still maintain its warmth while wet, whereas the Keb won't. The Keb is warmer and more packable though, making it more suitable for cold, dry conditions where weight and packability are key. The Atom is more suitable when you're not sure what the weather will be doing and aren't quite as focused on weight, but more on reliability in various conditions. Kind regards, Harry.
Is that okay if I take same size with ar and lt? My lt is size M and it is a littleeee bit roomy for me. I may take ar as an outer layer.
With an insulating layer it's always best to have a snug fit, any loose space will allow warm air to escape, reducing the performance of the jacket. If the LT is too big, try a small in the AR and see how you get on with it. Regards, Harry.
Thanks for this review, its really useful!
I'm now doubting about the Atom LT and the Atom AR. I wanna use it as outerlayer (gonna buy a gore tex raincoat in the future) for day hikes with a daypack and to use in the city. I will use it mostly with tempertures between 0 en 12 degrees celcius, but also maybe a few times no lower then -5. I'm from Holland and the wind also plays a part.
Which one would you recommand in this case? I'm afraid that the AR might be to warm while moving (less breathable) but the LT to cold if I stand still for a bit
I own both and I must say that I was in your situation that's why I first purchased the lt and then the ar. It's impossible to cover everything with just one jacket (being in town and then practice high energy activities). To say all, I also have the atom sl.
Owning the Proton LT which is similar to the Atom LT. I'm now going to get the Atom AR because the Proton LT is made for high output activity. Being in 1-5 Celcius range while standing still makes the Proton LT feel cold, especially with some wind. The Atom AR will be a nice all around warm jacket for winter and belaying in cold weather.
I'm in the same boat and I feel like a sucker needing to buy both jackets but I just may ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Super review.
How does this compare, warmth wise, to a Rab microlight?
Extremely similar! The Atom is probably ever so slightly warmer but less packable.
Was that 4 to 5 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Celsius.
What pants is he wearing in the vid? Thanks.
They are the Rab Vapour-Rise Guide trousers. rab.equipment/uk/vapour-rise-guide-pants-1
What color is the jacket and what size is the jacket- how tall is the person talking?
The colour is black and Paul is 6ft 3". Regards, Harry.
Thanks Harry. What size is the jacket?
Sorry, the jacket is a size large!
So Harry, the Atom AR doesn't fit particularly tight/snug then? I thought it might fit like the Cirium LT i.e. very tight and I would have to go up a size? I'm about the same measurements and I thought I might need a XL?
From experience the Cerium and Atom are very similar in size; I have tried on the two and am a medium in both. The size you go for does depend on how much you're wearing underneath, if you plan to wear several layers then you may want to go up a size, otherwise I'd stay with your normal size.
What is the difference between the AR and the LT?
The difference lies in the insulation. The AR (all round) features more insulation around the entire jacket. The LT also has breathable panels down the sides to allow wind to pass through and sweat to escape, whereas the AR eliminates these to keep you warmer. Regards, Harry.
Trekitt Mountain Sports If you had to only choose one which would you go for?
It depends how you're using the jacket. The Atom LT is arguably a more versatile jacket as you can use it as a midlayer or an outerlayer, however it has breathable side panels which increase breathability but decrease wind resistance and warmth. If you want something to be warmer with more protection from the wind, then go for the Atom AR. If you want something breathable for wearing in conditions which aren't below freezing and don't have a lot of wind, then go for the Atom LT. Below are links to the two products with a little more information:

www.trekitt.co.uk/33862/products/arcteryx-mens-atom-ar-hoody-dark-moss.aspx
how packable is the AR compared to the LT? I know the LT can pack into its own pocket, but does the AR have this feature? If not in general is it fairly easy to pack for backpacking? Thanks!
Can you layer atom SL under the atom AR? and under the LT?
Technically you could, but you'd get pretty hot and sweaty. You're better off picking the correct jacket for the conditions and then layering with a micro-grid fleece such as Arc'teryx's Delta.
It’s not 100% windproof, but highly wind resistant.
That is true! In our experience you can't feel the wind come through unless it's exceptionally windy.
Trekitt Totally agree, one of the best jackets I have ever owned.
Why is this shit sold out everywhere?
Good question...
