I like how it's described like a scifi Ghibli show. The thing that truly felt lackluster was the relationship between the two leads, the way twintail Yuko was saved has always bothered me for that
I was looking to reference the Dennou Coil Beard episode and I ended up watching this review. This was one of my favorite shows back then (along side Kaiba), soooo under rated. Anyway, your review made me laugh so thank you for that.
Yeeeeeah, I think this is a super underrated show, great review! The only thing that would make it a certified masterpiece would be if Yuko's family put Kyoto up for adoption before the show started, or at least permanently taped her mouth shut.
SERIOUSLY underrated and under watched. I too love the muted pallet sketching a beautiful world, which recalls my favorite anime, Haibane Renmei. Virtual reality integrates with the real world smoothly and plausibly. The overall story is engaging and compelling. Two "BUTs": The "Girls rule, boys drool" bias is off-putting to this male; and as noted, the ending is weak, and to me unsatisfying.
It's kind of a shame that this was what the animator of Goldenboy left behind as his legacy. His talent deserved a much more prestigious project than this. EDIT - I don't even know if this is true or not, I just happened to read it somewhere. It really doesn't even look like his art style to be honest. It looks more Studio Ghibi to me.
I remember dennou coil, too bad only a select few knew this existed even among the most die-hard weebs. Although you made the point that it's muted color palette is relaxing and doesn't rely on an abundant of visual diarrhea it was pretty bland, almost bleak and stale imo and into wolf's rain territory. Regardless I think visually it doesn't look interesting and has no "pop" to it which sadly I think made others not to pick it up. The whole maturity aspect (dealing with grief and loss etc.) May also be a turn off especially for those that lost pet's and family members. I loved the show but I can understand why some feel it's boring or bland visually and other a bit of a whiplash because I too felt some of these emotions while watching it
