I've only just stumbled upon your channel but I find your content very enjoyable. it's been quite a long time since the last upload and I think it's a shame you seem to have stopped, while I wish you gave RUclips another shot I just hope you're safe & still out there somewhere.
Its one of my all time favorite anime, I think the middle of the show feels a bit filler but I can forgive it because it doesn't last for too many episodes and at least serves to develops its characters and perform more world building. But they are a bit of an odd point. After these though the story really picks up fast, and I found myself glued to my screen for 2 days straight until I finished it the first time around. For a world so complex it takes its time to explore and play with its concepts before unleashing the real plot on the viewer. While some of the later concepts of the cyber world are a bit sci-fi, most of the technology is either plausible or already exists. The physical nature of the technology is inspiring and makes me wish the tech actually existed this way. The augmented reality seen through the eyes of kids is also a very nice touch, you can see how kids use the emerging world of glasses in their own way. The fact that we are dealing with kids means that they see bugs and hacking as toys to play with instead of the leftovers of the shifting and experimental nature of the cyber-world that they truly are. Because of their short life, things they remember from when they or their classmates were younger go around as rumors and are perceived as legends and myth. Is a nice touch to create the mystery of the show which is so gripping, and does a nice way to explain why kids are literally climbing through dark alley ways and abandoned urban spaces adults will never venture, let alone pay any attention too... It reminds me of the games me and my friends used to play as kids, except what used to be imagination has become reality. And it turns the otherwise mundane urban world they live in into a jungle of unknowns, with real risks and dangers lurking that have to be avoided or fought, and treasures that can be uncovered.
I only recently heard about it and was pretty surprised! I'm glad though, the more people who watch this, the better because I'd really like Mitsuo Iso to make more series, he's a phenomenally talented animator.
Ghosthack 6174 Maybe a few years down the line. I don't really have the time to do them right now and I don't really feel I have enough experience with the medium of anime yet. I do want to eventually just not right now.
Man, first Princess Tutu and now Dennou Coil? Not only do I really like your reviews, but I am really digging the fact that you're covering all these titles that don't either get much attention these days, or didn't during the time of release. Dennou being both of those. I won't lie, I was really surprised it got picked up for a Western release. I never expected this one to ever be brought over! As for the review, man you just get better with each one you do! I really felt that, like you, sometimes they really felt like kids and others they were a little too close to adults. Again, as you mentioned that could be cultural. Really appreciated the Pokemon GO mention with this, as it's actually what I thought when I saw GO released. I really should give Dennou Coil a rewatch sometime, and this review reminded me of just how much I really should do so. I'd imagine it's only going to be a matter of time before you hit that 500 subscriber mark, and then go even beyond that.
Thanks for the support! I'm glad people are enjoying my videos as much as they are. ^^ Pokemon GO and what's its done to society lately was actually what convinced me to write the review. lol
Two things: The boys are not given too many positive moments. Males have their strengths, as well as their weaknesses. And, I found the ending got away from me. I probably need to watch this again, to see if it makes more sense the second time through. (A similar thing happened with Neal Stephenson's "The Diamond Age", where the first half of the book did some extremely inventive and engaging world building, so much so that when the actual plot kicked in, it felt weak. But after one or two re-reads, when I was not so dazzled at the start, it made much more sense, and was actually quite well done.)
I love the premise as a light hearted cyberpunk. I think because the world of the glasses is designed, there would be room for a sequel series using the same tech in a new application. Criticisms: The fact that their kids does escape when in some parts they exposit a lot of jargon that they all, including the 4 y-o, nod in understanding. All the episodes did tie into each other nicely, save for the recap episode in the middle. When it got towards the end, it felt like they kept dancing around the solution for the last six-or-so episodes. And the true antagonist seemed overly evil when compared to the overall tone.
I'M still waiting for another story in any media that picture Augmented Reality this well... The theme of loss present in the show is also quite well develop.
I love this series. It's a very subtle series and does an excellent job exploring it's themes and story with gorgeous visuals and a nice melancholic soundtrack. The cast is memorable and endearing and it was a really good watch for me. I have close to no issues with it and this is a great review as usual.
I agree, it's a shame it went so unappreciated for a while and still kinda is, I'm glad that it'll be getting a dub soon, I'll definitely be buying it. I want it to be successful so that hopefully Mitsuo Iso makes more anime in the future.
Keten Yeah it's a criminally underrated series, but I'm glad that it's getting a dub. I really hope Mitsuo Iso makes more anime sooner or later too as he's very good with directing and animation in general.
>Other times they're weirdly a lot more intelligent and mature for their age. Just finished watching all the episodes of Dennou Coil. I'm Japanese and that's exactly what I thought! I don't think it's a difference in culture or anything. I really liked this anime as a kid, though.
Great review as always. Keep this pace up and you'll get 1k subs faster than snob getting 10k. I've had Dennou Coil on my plan to watch list for a while and this video made me watch it...after i finish princess tutu and ping pong first. I like this type of format where you review underappreciated stuff like kaiji or princess tutu. I can recommend you a few shows which i think deserve a spot on your list. Here are some: Planetes Ping pong Redline Kino's journey Ouran Koukou Host Club Texnolyze Gunbuster Katanagatari Shinsekai yori Also don't forget to keep improving yourself or you'll end up like ThatAnimeSnob ( lol ). You don't really need to change much right now, since you made only 7 videos so far but i'm saying that in future, you should try out more stuff, whether it be new type of videos or improvement in your editing.
I was actually thinking of reviewing Host Club some time in the near future, maybe I'll do that. Thank you for the advice and yeah, I'd like to try out new things, I'm still relatively new to this though so forgive me if it takes me a bit. ^^;
Dennou Coil remains one of my top-ten anime of the past decade, and probably longer. I wondered if the staff who made this ad for AT&T had watched Coil: ruclips.net/video/WLufqt3F030/видео.html. I'd prefer the glasses in Coil over those clunky VR goggles though! In the vein of kids shows that "treat their audiences with respect" I'll recommend two other NHK productions, Seirei no Moribito and Kemono no Sou-ja Erin. Both are based on YA novel series by anthropologist Uehashi Nahoko. I was especially struck with how Erin doesn't pull any punches.
Anime needs more titles for kids that don't treat them like idiots and less schlocky titles that try so hard to be mature. People still have that "the darker and bloodier, the better" mentality in regards to a piece of fiction.
Indeed, there's a difference between being "for mature audiences" and actually being "mature". Heck, Dennou Coil is one of the most mature series I've seen and it's for kids. lol
After watching your reviews of Mind Game, Tutu, Kaiji and this one, I might as well confess my love to you. Will you make daily reviews of my life ? (Since this is internet and some people take random stuff to seriously jk) Keep up the great work.
*Thoughts* This show was a mistake... *whats wrong with this* E1 the very premise of this unneeded virtual nonsense...how pathetic is it is to have a imaginary pet...but it doesn't stop there...the imaginary pet even acted traumatized...still does not stop there...they even apparently can run away from home and...children are hired to find them... E2 they should seriously give you as the viewer a reason to care about the 3d aspect of the world before trying to make a drama scene with them running away just because the don't want their glasses which are only used for seeing things they do not need... not to mention that thing came out of a wall...how is it even a threat? actually...how do these 3d data exist? they can freely go ANYWHERE they want...what computer is telling their glasses where these 3d models are and what they are doing in the world? E3 dropped this show. it's too cringe inducing. with the child and the digital dog sobbing like a human...and nothing making sense at all...
Virtual pets don't die. Virtual pets are easy to take care of. As for why it acted scared and sad, I imagine that's just how it was programmed to seem more real and emotional. As for why anyone would want one... they get them because it's like a game, they ask for them because honestly, virtual pets have been proven many times over to be popular with things like tamagachi, nintendogs, and loads of flash games about taking care of virtual pets. The whole idea of them being so attached to these 3d creatures is that technology has advanced to the point it's difficult to see what the difference is between these virtual creatures and real creatures so they start treating them and thinking of them as real creatures. Heck, even without the virtual pet angle, the idea that you can hack in lasers to shoot at each other and they have a variety of devices that you can use against others who have glasses sounds fun as hell. As for how the 3d things exist, satellites maybe? I mean, it's probably similar to Pokemon GO which I pointed out, just a more advanced version of it. I don't think it's really that outside the realm of possibility, heck I think it's very possible that this kind of technology will exist within 20-30 years. I believe they explain in the show that there are huge buildings in major cities which send out the signals. That was enough for me personally. Also, children are not hired to find them. That's just a little "business" the grandma set up and the kids decided to go along with it as a game.
Extremely underrated anime and channel.
Really enjoyed the show. Awesome video :D
also I hope you go back to making videos sometime!

Your voice is so calming- I wish you still made videos-
I'm so glad this show got licensed and is getting a dub. It truly is a hidden gem of an anime.
I only recently heard about it and was pretty surprised! I'm glad though, the more people who watch this, the better because I'd really like Mitsuo Iso to make more series, he's a phenomenally talented animator.

I just finished this show, it was amazing, so unique and original
I love it, that show have a lot of memorable scenes

I'm happy to hear it!

160 subs so take it slowly, you can start adding new stuff somewhere after 20 videos or 1k subs limit. You are doing fine so far.

Now there is a dub. Hopefully now this anime will take over the world like Digimon.
Can you review Escaflowne?
I'll definitely do Escaflowne at some point. ^^
Keten Can you sum up your thoughts on it in one sentence until then?
Romance and ending suck, the other genres it handles are great though and it has beautifully designed mecha with fantastic action.
+Keten Thanks for that! And maybe .... Could you... Review Legend of the galactic heroes?
I probably won't be tackling LotGH anytime soon but I'll get to it eventually though.
its a very good show and its also sad tho :( (SPOILER ALERT) but what is the other side? I dont understand it very well.
