- This week I continue my cruise heading North explaining the downsides of living on a boat. Although I really do love boat life it does have its challenges and is a lot of hard work especially during the colder winter months. I try my best to address Boat Life expectations and realisations although I absolutely adore this off grid lifestyle choice.

Thank you so much for watching. If you are new here, I'm Heidi and I live aboard my Narrowboat The Rum Wench and travel the UK's Canals in search of Adventure. After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Pirate Boat.

You are as far away from being a whinger as anyone could possibly be. You work hard to maintain your lifestyle and you don’t complain at all. It is nice that you’re traveling with a companion. It makes life easier at times when you know someone has your back.

I agree with you about the CRT. But they do also like wasting money on the canal where I fish they have just replaced the signage with new ones that was only two years old, saying exactly the same wording. Also last winter a group from crt was planting 3 rows of hawthorn canes when speaking to them they had traveled up from Cornwall to Yorkshire with them. No wonder they are scint.

You’re such a positive person Heidi, that’s a great trait helps you over some more negative times. That was a scary lock. Do you often find if one thing goes wrong it can turn into a shyt day, that’s when the positivity has to come out. Very nice Retirement Homes by the lock in Stone and also a pub alongside the lock.
:smiles: One of the small pleasures with watching boating channels like yours is when we recognise where you are :) As soon as I saw that huge gathering of geese I knew you were coming to visit us here in Stone :) Seeing St. Michaels's on screen was lovely, as it is part of quite a pivotal period of the towns history. Interesting to see that little snippet of Sally too - now that's someone with some get-up-and-go to run a small pottery business on a boat!
On the downsides theme, one of the big challenges to come for all boaters is the foolish decision of the government to cut funding for the CRT - such a short-sighted move on their part, especially given that, the scheme of things, it is not a huge amount of money compared to what they waste on other things ... cough ... cough ... HS2! It's as if they recall nothing of the immense effort it took to revive the canals after they had been neglected last time around!

Thanks Heidi, Luv ya work, appreciate seeing the mud at the bottom of the rainbow, the gnarled base of the unicorn's horn and all that giss(*) ...... A fiend once noted that whilst he was unhappy commuting to his daily grind of a job, he realised that he shared that commute (on a ferry) with tourists on their way to or from the tropical island that he lived on..... We often see only the negatives in our lives, where others would be jealous of what we have..... Thanks for sharing, giss (* gizz, jizz???) and all..
I've had a couple of shitty days (1st world anxiety issues), yesterday I came hone to enjoy the latest from my van life girls (#campervibe), today I forgot my troubles by living vicariously through you and your adventures..... Thanks..
Being outside when feeling rough can sometimes help to blow those cobwebs out. If you run out of lemsip, soluble aspirin +honey does the trick.
You're so funny Heidi even with a bad bout of cold. I have had 4 days suffering from a stomach bug. Didn't know which way to point at the toilet first. 😢

I'm really glad that you showed how hard it is Hiedi,I know it's not going to be a fairy tale when I eventually get my boat,to be honest I'm bricking it a bit as it's just diving into the unknown, doing locks mooring up planning where to go let alone learning about the boat and trying to keep it in the right direction etc but it's always been my dream for over 10 yrs and I'm going to live it within the next 18 months I hope,stay safe,Nick 🏴 x

Hello Heidi - hope you are recovering quickly. I appreciate you sharing the reality side of being a continuous cruiser. Any part of life has its challenges so anyone considering cruising or living in a caravan or a tiny house really needs to look realistically at what it takes. You have a serious adventurer’s soul so you are much more capable of adapting to where you find yourself. You're living my dream life ✨️ but I'm just saying that running a house has its issues and wants repairs and general upkeep, and sometimes it's out doors so I t totally understand where you're coming from....... with doing things in horrible weather you really do take the brunt of it and you do so well for being a single boater I take my hat off to you!! 😊

Absolutely brilliant video Heidi and to your point, boat life is a choice which I refer to as ‘the gentle life’. Sure there are times when things do not go to plan, but to bemoan it the way numerous channels do, seems misleading and possibly off putting to those who are genuinely considering a life aboard. The way you describe living day to day comes across eloquently, unfiltered and honest and in your usual ‘carry on‘ like style. If I speak to anyone else considering the life, this is the defining video. So glad you did this. I have been on nearly 9 years and have never looked back.

Hi Heidi and bonnie, we need to know about the down side of boat life, it ain't all sunshine and warm days!!! Don't waste your money on lemsip. Buy a bottle of lemonade, a lemon, honey and paracetamol. Warm the lemonade, honey and lemon together and take the tablets!!!!! A fraction of the price of medicine and tastes much nicer. The best way to get rid of a cold is to turn up the heat, pile on as many blankets as you can, put a candle on the end of your bed and start drinking rum until you see two candles. When you wake up the next day your cold will be gone. True!😃

there's negatives in all chosen lifestyles so it was good to see what yours are. Bonnie's loving boating, she seems to understnad the routines now a bit. Hope you feel better soon.

Honestly, I see them to close down the cannels someday. A huge makeover will cost millions, and then only the rich will be able to boat on the cannels.

It looks like a lot of fun in spite of the weather. There doesn't appear to be many sunny days in the UK.
Great video, love it. I even love the grain on the lock wood gate pivot arm/thing where you were going up-lock. Yep, boating can be the pits, for sure. Especially in bad weather, but even in good weather, as you mention, you still need to get fuel and water and dump tanks and rubbish. And ... just find a nice place to moor for a day or two, or a week or two. Not to mention WIND! and trees falling! And winter weather too, torrential rain and snow. But my gosh, you have such a great friend Nikki with you ... and she has you. Ah yes, internet access is a big deal too, especially for folks like you who do business online and depend on that for income.
Oh, the reflection under bridge 82 was beautiful. Wow.

Another great vlog. If anybody asks me about life on the canals I point them to your RUclips channel, because you tell people how it is, warts and all. If they think they would want to live on the waterways I suggest they arrange to hire a boat for a year, so they experience them at their worst as well as their best.
There are a couple of things I do when I have the 'snuffles'. I will put a teaspoon of honey into a mug, cover the bowl of the teaspoon with a good squash (usually orange, sometimes orange, lemon and pineapple, and occasionally (depending on the last 'component') blackcurrant), add a Lemsip (which, if it is blackcurrant, means blackcurrant squash), and top off with hot water.
One of the weirdest ice creams I ever tried was Mingelas' Dragon Breathe ice cream (I think that was the name). It was like eating a frozen curry! Hot and spicy, while also very cold. My poor taste buds did not know what was going on! Unfortunately they did not make this flavour for very long.
I do not know if I have mentioned this on an earlier post, but for icy conditions you might want to get hold of some Magic Spikers (other products are available), They fit over the soles of your shoes, and the little spikes then dig into the ice, providing you with a decent grip. I have two pairs (one is always in my work bag). Think of them as snow chains for your shoes.

Ditto regarding having to move when unwell Heidi.. being a pensioner now everything is hard work and the cold/wet weather plays havoc with my Arthritic hands. After 24 years on my boat I sometimes wonder how much longer I can do winters… I hope you feel better soon and thanks for sharing your trip around Stone… good luck and take care of yourself… 😊

Great vlog Heidi, not moaning just a explanation of some of the downsides. Maybe next should be a vlog about the upsides of narrowboat life. You could raid your archives for your favourites bits of good times - not more than 59 mins though!! We cruise April to Nov on our 58' narrowboat and then winterise it whilst we bugger off to somewhere warm. Of course we're retired, it took 47 years of working to achieve it though. We love seeing youngsters like you living on and enjoying the inland waterways, so keep up your great vlogs for the world to enjoy

Hope the cold has gone. For me, 2 lemsip a tsp of sugar a glug of whisky all in one cup topped up
with boiling water. All taken at bed time. I sleep like a log and awake refreshed, or hung over. Either way I don't care about the cold😊

well i live in 160 m2 where them cars takes about 120 m2 not a problem though my bed takes about 4 m2 and my tv takes about 1m2. its not a problem 2 just live in a smal space. Just make it your happy space. I'm glad you found yours. Happy 4 U i am. Sorry for the spelling. Rock On Pirate Quing!
