  • The NOTAR (No Tail Rotor) system for helicopters was developed by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems. The technology was introduced in the 1980s as an alternative to traditional tail rotor systems. The NOTAR system was designed to address some of the limitations and safety concerns associated with tail rotors, offering advantages such as reduced noise, enhanced safety, and improved maneuverability.
Instead of the traditional tail rotor, it uses directed airflow and a variable pitch fan in the tailboom to counteract torque from the main rotor. This results in reduced noise, increased safety, and improved maneuverability, making NOTAR-equipped helicopters more suitable for diverse environments.
This helicopter belongs to HELIUS's fleet, stations at Oakdale Airport, California, mostly used for heavy lifting and powerline maintenance.
The MD Helicopters MD 600N is a light utility civilian helicopter designed in the United States. It is a stretched eight-seat development of the five-seat MD 520N helicopter.
McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Systems (MD Helicopters since 1999) first announced it was developing a stretched MD 520N in late 1994, at that time designated the MD 630N. The prototype, a modified MD 530F, had made its first flight on November 22, 1994. McDonnell Douglas gave the go-ahead for the production aircraft, redesignated the MD 600N, in March 1995.
The type flies with Allison Model 250-C47 turboshaft engine, 600 shp.

If you watch the take off part, you can see the NOTAR "cap" twisting as the pilot uses the pedals.
