Yeah, if you're willing to forgo certain niceties you can make an extremely solid, albeit more basic vehicle that will last decades. Issue is with added complexity comes more moving parts to break, higher dependence on exotic materials/technology and more maintenance. As many modern militaries are learning, sometimes all you need is something somewhat basic that just works.
I like the way Russian people invent such flying machines, large windows, roomy interiors, quirky start-up procedures, even in cold climates, great people!
I love these little choppers. They are modular. Behind the cockpit can be fitted a variety of 'modules' like for passenger carrying or as an air ambulance. I am guessing this one is a crop duster. There is a larger, more modern version in production called the Ka-226. ☮
I flied this helicopter a few years ago, it is used to spray crops in Romania. The pilot used some wire to tie something at the engine and this make me nervous before takeoff, but the heli flied very nice though. I was feeling great and the flight was sensational! This one is also a romanian KA-26 if I look at the flag!
Ekranoplan was on the list, but not the top. They've had a bunch of military and civilian aircraft, plus in the early days there were some pretty wild ones.

Awesome video! The good old Kamov 😊 When I was young I flew by KA-26 many times,my father was ag. pilot. I made a video a few years ago about one (on my channel).

How the hell is someone not still manufacturing these? Simple, cheap, versatile and being Russian, hard as nails. Would sell thousands in more remote and less developed parts of the world.
Kaman also built an "eggbeater" type helo. I always thought they looked comical. But those two rotors meshed. These are concentric and has two radial engines! No need for tail rotor, or even pedals under normal conditions.

Kamov helicopters are like Tatra cars and trucks - a whole different Eastern-Bloc line of technological development. And for all the crazy complexity of that rotor head, I would guess that it works just as well as simpler single-rotor Western designs.
can anyone please confirm this is a Kamov Ka-26? it appears to have separate engines for each rotor, is this correct? is the craft capable of any kind of stable flight (or at least an emergency descent) if one of the rotors fails? is it possible to cause the rotors to intersect, has this ever happened? the video jumps between winding up the spring starters (i presume) and then the engine running, and it also jumps between stationary and rotating rotors, we do not get to see these start - what is the reasons for these gaps?
Easy to fly and much safer than a tail rotor design especially when working around trees, fences and wires where a tail rotor strike can ruin your day.

I dunno, these were produced from 1969-1985, this particular one was built in 1977. So it has been flying for possibly up to 47 years. I say possibly because in Dec2016 it was seen dismantled in Hungary. Still, to be flying 47 years after construction doesn't appear to be a death trap.
You skipped over the actual starting process you just jump cut that part out. I would have love to hear that helicopter spool up. This would have a better video if you had those two things.
The fact is that these old helicopters are still flying on a regular basis is a testament to their engineering and construction.
