  • What's up everybody!
    This is a DIY how-to on replacing the Valve Cover Gasket on a 2011-2015 3rd Gen. Kia Optima 2.4L N/A. How to remove/replace High-Pressure Fuel Pump also covered in video. Sorry it got a bit long, just wanted to be as thorough as possible. I also made a quick 10-minute How-To version without as much footage, detail and insight:
    • 2011-2015 Kia Optima V...
    Torque Specs included.
    *DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a Master Tech/Mechanic, just a long time wrencher.
    Car in video is a 2012 Kia Optima 2.4L.

    Great tip on removing the fuel relay and letting the fuel run out was the most important part. Good thing I watched this video before I tried to remove it. The pressure removing the hose would've been dangerous if hadn't done that.

      @TheOriginalBeeCee so far no sign of a leak. I was adding a lot of oil between oil changes and it stunk because of it dripping down the exhaust side onto the heat shield and manifold.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  2 месяца назад

      These cars are notorious for burning oil as well, so I doubt it was just losing it from the VCG. there was a recall for it and everything. This car in particular was losing almost 2 quarts in a 3k interval

    • @nateg08
      @nateg08 2 месяца назад

      @TheOriginalBeeCee I know they do. Hers burns very little. Maybe half quart or so between oil changes. Ive been a fanatic about changing her oil though. The vast majority was the gasket.

    Thanks for posting this video! Just got mine done on my 2015 optima. Took it nice and slow and paid attention to all your instructions. Everything went well, except for a bolt that I broke 😂 but I ended up getting it out of there. Some advice to anyone about to do this, if you buy the OEM it will only come with the big gasket (small one is not included) the blue aftermarket comes with both. They might have made some adjustments to it and it now fits a lot better. GREAT VIDEO, I recommend taking up this task while following these instructions!

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  2 года назад

      I appreciate it. But I promise wasn’t too much to see. My best suggestion is brake cleaner, red scotch brite & shop/paper towels for the motor mating surface….On the valve cover itself I would just do brake cleaner & paper towels. I reviewed a bit on the cleaning for over a minute starting @ 23:18. Just gotta take your time and be patient, and you should be perfectly fine. I would get a decent amount of brake cleaner too, for this job I would say maybe 2/3 cans depending on how much oil you have to clean up. You really want to try and get rid of all leaked-oil and any grime/residue as well, because you want to make sure you can accurately see that you solved the leak when the job is completed.

I also replaced the GDI O-Ring. My engine is not as yellow as the one in the video as I always change the oil every 5,000 kms. using full synthetic oil. The cam lobes are still shiny and no traces of any scratches.

    Thank you so much for posting this! Really explicit and easy to follow. I might have to do this soon with my 2013 Optima 2.4L. I do have a few questions, if you don't mind:
    1. I took the car into the dealer to get a recall addressed and they said my "timing cover" is leaking. From the fact that when you removed this cover it exposed the timing chain I'm guessing this is the same thing as the valve cover, but I was hoping you could clarify for me that the timing cover and the valve cover are indeed the same thing.
    2. You showed some screenshots from a manual with torque specs and such. Where did you get this manual? I have a few other jobs that I need to do on this same car and I don't really have a sense for what is a reputable source for manuals and what is not.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  4 года назад +1

      Hello, thank you for the comment! Sorry for the late reply, RUclips doesn't always send me notifications for every comment. But the Valve Cover and Timing Cover are not the same thing, sometimes you might see the Valve Cover referred to as a Rocker Cover however. The Timing Cover is going to be on the side of the engine, and not fun. Removing the Valve Cover exposes the upper portion of the timing chain, but this is not the job they are referring too. As for the Service Manual with Torque Specs, I have a friend who has access to Kia Factory Service Manuals and I acquired it through him.

    Only hang up I had and my nemesis are the wire connectors for the coils that didn’t appear to be in this video. There is a gray tab on the top that slides back, then you depress the center have to wiggle them. Despise those as easy to break until you figure out how they come off. Also, the Fel-pro VS50869 R gasket set fit perfect. Saves $470 from dealer around here.

    Great tutorial, what if there's sludge built up in the engine? I've heard GDI engines are prone to it and when I changed my PCV valve there was sludge built up inside of it too.
    Edit: Question is can I do anything to remove the sludge (if there is any) and is it even worth it?

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  Год назад

      Unfortunately, these engines were prone to some issues & earlier failures. Is it worth trying to fix? That’s really only something you can answer….and how invested you are in it. how many miles are on it, whats its overall condition, whats its condition mechanically, whats its value as it sits now, do you still owe on it, etc etc. These are questions you need to answer when thinking of is it worth investing in or not. As far as the sludge, they’re different ways and remedies to help sort out sludge, some probably help, some not so much. But the real way to address sludge is taking it apart (at least to some extent) cleaning it thoroughly, then putting it back together.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee

      Thats a very subjective question to be honest. Depends on its maintenance, how it was maintained prior, etc. But generally speaking, in my opinion I don’t think they’re the best platform ever. Prone to oil leaks, especially valve cover as seen in this video, timing cover is good for oil leaks as well as potential timing chain rattling.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee
      @TheOriginalBeeCee  Год назад

      Hard to say man. Really could be anything. Going to have to go back over it slowly and carefully. But, I would suggest mixing up small bit of soap in a water bottle with water, shake it and make a bubblely substance. while its running, put some bubbles on a hose clamp connection point, and see if it starts bubbling. You’ll know if it’s leaking. Do this on every hose/line to see if you have any bubbling from air seepage. That would be an easy place to start.

      @@ChicoNasty got ya….you might want to check and make sure that it’s the same fuse as the one in the video, and confirm you are pulling the correct fuse…….if its 100 percent the fuel pump fuse you’re pulling, and it still stays running, it’s not the end of the world….you can still do the job & you’ll probably just have a little bit more gas drippage than you would have if the fuel/pressure was relieved.

    Did you have any issues not replacing the high pressure fuel pipe and the bolts to the high pressure fuel pump. I know Kia says to but I hear a lot of people don’t. If I don’t have to spend the $55 I would like to not do that.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee

      Naaa I see no need to replace the pump unless obviously your having pre-existing problems with it.

    • @TheOriginalBeeCee

      artica shoemake I’m not familiar with the Hybrid design, so I can’t directly say. I know the Hybrids were 2.4’s as well, so I would think there are going to be some similarities, and the process would at least be somewhat inline with this video. Maybe someone else can directly comment on the Hybrid setup. But my best suggestion would to be just pull off the plastic engine cover, and compare your setup to what you see in the video!

      Not quite sure what you're referring too. Although after the cleaning, using brake cleaner and such prepping the surface, definitely could give it that dry look because essentially everything exposed was cleaned.
