Had me at the Let's go crazy intro!
x2
Yeah that messed me up real bad.
YESSS!!!!!! Me too
Incredible. Not a single bad sound
As a huge fan of Prince I REALLY appreciated the references ❤😊
Thanks for the sounds of the unforgettable Lyle Mays
The sound @2:32 is beautiful. It reminds me so much of the outro of Myxamatosis from Radiohead. Very warbly and melancholy.
I love when you pair it with your vintage vibe Rhodes OMG 😱
All the video is a master class, officially.
A trip back to the 80's. Excellent performance and video. Thank you very much for sharing Matt. Cheers!
Amazing playing as always Matt 🔥🔥🔥
Spheric, mystic, fantastic! Thank you, Matt for this nice introduction.
Beautiful piece of kit
Very beautiful sounds!
Excellent demonstration.
Awesome as always, Matt! Now On wishlist!
Nice Matt, that was really cool playing the Prince Intro, sounds so good!
Matt is the only audio vlogger who can talk and play with no disturbing ears )))) great sound... please MOAR! )))
It's just beautiful!
Pure pleasure listening to Matt 😊❤
Thanks Matt.
superb. You know how to make the OB sing. All the feels!
Beautiful!! And I'm liking all the Prince 💜
Wow, you did a very good demo of this fantastic synth!! It is very useful, thank you so much for this and the rest of your videos, finally we a musician who has been involved a lot into Jazz/Soul/Funk on RUclips.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and yours.
Really a good sound Mr MattJohnson !
Wow, wicked opener.
Lovely Matt loved all the Prince Patches and chords.Saw Prince in 1984 and Before his death. My fave, so diverse in his taste. Thanks for the synth videos.
Matt always has awesome chords that sound like ear candy.
What a beauty.
Aww The Beautiful Ones ❤️
Spot on 👌🏻
this is killer. those purple™ patches sound great
The interplay of the Rhodes and OBX8 at 1:13 is very pleasing in a 1970s kind of dark magic kinda way, very Zawinul.
Thanks
You just have to love that riff
Long hot summer, so cool, so 80s
More of these please!
This has got to be the best synth demo I’ve ever heard, lush from beginning to end with so much variety, and some really nice fresh ideas throughout along with some great song lead picks! 7:30 sounds just like the intro to Tame Impala’s Let It Happen (unintentionally I’m sure) - just need to pitch it up and it’s there!
Dearly beloved….
inspiring!
You always make me want to buy synths lol. So talented/such great sound design.
Matt makes me want to be Matt :)
Glad to see all the Prince love in the comments here! 💜 Oh, and at 9:43... woo, gorgeous.
amazing
Matt immenso ❤️
Vero, al posto dei globuli rossi, ha le note nel sangue..
Love how detuned this sounds... Pure Poly bliss.
Awesome synth the obx it's the 80s behemoth
1:12, 3:32 just wow
Hey, see where you went there Matt at 2secs !! Undoubtedly one of the finest sounding analogue poly's ever designed. Super sweet! Hoping everything is well with you & family btw 😎👍🎹🎶🍻
Awesome sounding board.
It deserves its place as an iconic instrument.
It’s an awesome price too, so I won’t be owning one.
Great demo - Thanks Matt.
I‘m a big fan, Matt, but these video-fx drive me crazy ;-) Great sound presentation indeed, as always 👍👍
without the video fx I cant get the full vibe it helps..
I want that hoodie, looks really comfy
so sick
Nice video.
This might be the first poly synth I actually like the sound of. Amazing demo!
Those pads stretch to the horizon and then some
Dope 🔥👊🏼
@@VS_AUTOS_Tamil hey 👋🏼 is this spam or real? ;)
@@VS_AUTOS_Tamilgreat but what’s the point at the end? ;) (of your name) it’s not the real account..
last patch is mental good
What a demo.
The 80s beast renewed
And then you play that Lyle Mays ‘Street Dreams’ track. Love it. Now I really want to save my pennies!
Man...I love how you get into these awesome vibes...like the "Lyle-lead" together with the Rhodes and same for that 70´s Azymuth/Vannelli vibe with a more "japanese" sounding mono lead....btw...is the Lyle-lead full unison or split 4 voice unison?...wanna fire up my OB-Xa now :)
The Lyle is 4 voice I think
Matt, might you do a video with the Voyager sometime? I always see it sitting in the background and would love to hear what you can do with it.
Loved the Pizza Express gig the other week by the way. Had a fantastic time and great to hear you play in person finally, thank you!
thanks for coming!
Nice Lyle tribute at @5:30..! ♥
Thank you for not playing Jump or anything resembling it.
Wish I could play like this. If I'd buy that synth, it'd end up as an expensive paper weight.
sounds good - prefer the prophet vids if i had to choose from these two exp keyboards
Matt, you're making me seriously start contemplating the idea of emptying my wallet to get this beast! Even though I already have an OB6 that I love. Why does the OBX8 have to be so damn expensive?
Hi Matt, thanks for all your really nice video’s. I wonder, do you ever use a sustain pedal (or any other pedal) when you play on a synth? That would be a tutorial I would like to see. Thanks and lot’s of succes to you.
yes I do use sustain
1:12...hell yea
I just want the coat.
Nice demo video!, thanks!. What’s the name of the drum machine you use here?. Thanks!.
Nice video Matt. I was wondering while watching though - since you're an esteemed songwriter - how far away is writing an actual song from making a musical idea sound good on a synth? Thanks a lot for all of your videos. Sincerely, a synth guy whos trying to write songs.
They are connected, any piece of music is about trying to tell a story
👍👌. From God's own country. Kerala
5:30 Lyle Mays❤❤❤
Thx
seeing your obxa video right now typo obx8
before clicking play, i said: "he better play some prince!"
Matt, would love to hear you try tackling some Mick MacNeil's Obie parts on 'Sons & Fascination'.....next boffin doing Hump or Schlom Schmoyer get's the blade...🤬🤬🤬🤬
Hi Matt, very nice sounds, what effect are you using on oberheim obx8?
I didn't use much, maybe just D verb which is Pro Tools basic verb
😩 … Is about as good as I’ve heard the OB-X8 sound … What gear/processing are you recording through? Let’s Go Crazy sounded so good; I was so hopeful … then Africa (and other segments) was a letdown, as I heard the same bright/thin sound that has put me off this synth from the get-go … I still think it’s whatever undisclosed oscillators they have used in the OB-X8 that are responsible … I still want to love it. Thanks for the additional samples!! 😎👍🏼🙏🏼 … I just can’t help being disappointed in the sound of this synth …
Each to their own. To my ears Africa sounds pretty fat but there you are!
do you like the sound of Oberheim synths normally? If so and you somehow don't like this one, I am not sure what you've been listening to. What are you listening to the sound clips you've heard on? Have you played one in person?
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai Hey Matt, that was the pinnacle of the vid. I don’t mean that as a criticism of the rest. Africa encapsulated subtlety.
It's something that sounds off about certain sounds on this synth. I can't put my finger on it either.
@@kevinbatchelor9566 Yeah, absolutely; I’ve played XAs and 8s, and still own one example of the latter. A YT link that I think helps illustrate: ruclips.net/video/FXYX5q8jdl0/видео.html
Obviously the OB was not able to heat the room, since you are sitting there with a jacket that looks like being able to protect from a snowstorm.
2:19 subtle env goodness
What is env?
Desperately Seeking Susan. LOL!
This is an AMAZING instrument, but please remember the artist behind the keys. I would NEVER be able to make it sound THIS good.
Dearly beloved, we have gathered here today
To get through this thing called life
Electric word life, it means forever and that's a mighty long time
The best moment to me: 5:30 to 8:23, 9:43 to 10:21, 11:30 to 12:04.
Couldn’t help to notice that the audio outputs are connected in an unusual way. One lead connected to the Left Stereo out, the other connected to the center mono out. Perhaps this was on purpose?
Hey Matt, do you use preamps for your synths or do go directly into your interface?
Check his previous videos... I think he uses a GML?
Yes GML Preamp
Is that purple lighting part of the synth functionality, or did you add it in post production, Matt! (And, how well the Oberheim sits on top of the Nord piano.)
I recall roughly 13 years after it was new, watching Purple Rain and thinking there was something wrong with our VCR when “Let’s Go Crazy” began. Thought that vibrato was a common glitch in the playbook system. Didn’t remember from when I was four and the music was new that the vibrato was purposely patched.
Thanks, it's not a Nord it's a vintage Vibe
Thank you for setting me straight, Matt. I could’ve sworn you triggered pitch bend at one moment. It might’ve been on the synthesizer, not the piano. I’ve debated purchasing a Vintage Vibe model, if they built an exact duplicate of the 88-note Stage Mark II
@@Shred_The_Weapon Their new pianos sound incredible. And you can get any Rhodes tone you want out of them with the variable voice control
Thank you again #MattJohnson. You’ve been very gracious in your responses to my comments.
wrapped up nice and warm there matt. the energy crisis hit you too? was either the gas bill or the oberheim huh?
Matt, do you have a "preference" for the "Oberheim sound" or the "Prophet sound" I bought the SC P10 (and your sounds). BUt I like this OB-x8 almost better. Also, I mainly play sax and have the original Brecker EWI 1000/2000; MIke used an Oberheim xPander with it. Oberheim has MIDI CC 2 (breath control), SC does not. The OB here also comes in module (I have Numa Compact 2x with the same TP ( Fatar keybed as SC). If you had to pick one, which would it be, and why? Thanks, great to have a great player on these videos.
Very hard to say. The Prophet is maybe more flexible in what it can do where the OB is very much a ‘sound’, but that sound is great!
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai Interesting. I'm still just at the stage of paging through the sounds on my P10 module. Today, I'm going to Sam Ash to compare P10 w/OB-X8 and Take 5. Tomorrow, Perfect Circuit. Some saxophones are that way (e.g., bronze Rampone). I a-b'd that one w/ the bare brass and bought the latter @ NAMM. The bronze has a "sound." The brass is more flexible. Some ay the P 5/10 sounds "alive." I hear that in some sounds, again, like a sax. Does the Oberheim? Ultimately, which is best for me, as primarily a saxophonist? I'd buy both if they weren't so pricey!
This is sort of like comparing sax mouthpieces. Sax players have been known to go insane doing so! But at least they are $300-$800, not $3000+...
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai On a side note, I loaded your (great) sounds into my P10 module, but since your patches go into slots #211-258 and 511-528, didn't they erase the factory ones? Remember, I'm brand new at synth! Thanks...
Yo, the woodwind patch at 5:40. is insane. Is that a preset? Also, is it mono ?
It's one of my patches, in mono
Yesterday they announced that in my country is only obx8 for sale…. I bought Juno x, Jupiter x,( today still is not in stock, I bought them😂) I can’t buy this! Or maybe
These sounds are so Prince!!!
I just need hours of your playing to sample!
3:05 - Long Hot Summer by Style Council?
Yes
Very well done, but you convinced me into buying a Prophet 10 already, not this time (-:
What reverb were you using Matt?
Nothing much, just a little UAD Lexicon
11:30
Hello i want to know if the drums sounds are made by the OB X8 thank you.
No they are not
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai ok can you say me what is it please? Thanks
Hey Matt. At 1:20, is that rose petals or red blood cells?
petals I think
Either way, it looks cool. Lovely demo by the way. Thanks!
amazing stuff well done mate
what is the preset at 0:43 ?
Thanks, they are all my own presets
Hi Matt, this or the prophet 10? (i know probably both, but if you were on a desert island)
Impossible to pick a winner!
P10. More faithful to the classic sound, imho. 2 extra voices, obviously. Looks much better, imho. And it’s even a bit cheaper! Especially so, assuming you know how to record/multitrack …
@MattJohnsonJamiroquai Yeah ... who's your favourite child territory there... 😶
Just sounds brilliant. Wonder if I can put one on my Xmas list!😂
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai Well it's stereo vs mono, so having a stereo desert synth is probably going to win for me.
Terrific! Hit like button in under 10 seconds. :)
It‘s safe to hit the like button even before starting Matt‘s videos.
Huummm creamy 😍
Does sound great but the price 😳 starting to think the prophet 10 is cheap 😂
