In the olden days, back when dinosaurs were thinking about becoming disposable lighters and I was one of the three sales guys at Sequential (Circuits) the main difference was "edge". The Prophet always had Smitty's velvety sound, the OB had the overdriven filter. The other main difference at that time was the Prophet had 128 points of knob resolution and the OB 64. Apples and oranges. Some artists have referred to the OB as "noble sounding", which I always took to mean that big, buzzy fanfare in and around the Jump thing with more or less brass "quack". Grab a fistful and your balls seemed to get bigger. Like the Prophet, though, modulation sources and destinations were limited by modern standards. I'm biased, of course, but I always felt the Prophet was the more articulate of the two, capable of warmer sounds. Example - more "Moog-ish" if you will. Had it not been, all our old Tomita demos would never have worked as well as they did. And that depth of character was the difference. Like the OB was the scruffy kid in the block party band and that was its gig, but you could dress up a Prophet and take it anywhere from 80s ballad slop to Tahoe lounge lizard. And then, like Dave said, what everyone wanted was real instruments in a portable box, not synthesizers. Hopefully this time around people are buying synths for the right reasons, not to simply replace 400 pound electroacoustic devices or fake horn sections but for synthesizer music. Remember Suzanne Ciani's very wise comment - The worst thing that ever happened to electronic music was putting keyboards on synthesizers.

Nothing wrong with having both if you can afford. Both have pros and cons. OBX8 stereo panning vs P10 mono. P10 10 voices vs 8V OBX8. Both sound great, can't go wrong with either imo.
Put the Prophet through some stereo effect so that difference diminishes and then it would give the Oberheim a run for its money! At least for some sounds, like the more mellow warm pads.
Surprisingly good format, both sounded good. Maybe give yourselves longer than just one minute to find a good patch for the category, as in the edit that is speed through.

I have a prophet 5 and an OBXa and I pick OB. Oberheims to me just have this amazing phase and density that is unrivaled in this class. It’s like the old Oberheim slogan: “Some things are better than others!”
I called it a draw, but I'd take the Prophet... Unless you were giving them away in which case I'd take the Oberheim, sell it, buy the Prophet, and have a weekend in Bognor on the change.
I’m fortunate to have both. I bought the originals when they came out. Sold them when sample based and rompers became the “trend” for cover band players. Running these through strymon effects is pure sonic bliss. Big sky, mobius, time line, and drive effects make these synths sound even more amazing. Great video. Thank you.
This is a great comparison video I really like the concept. Perhaps it could be possible to build the same patch on both and compare the differences in timbre that way? I think that would be an interesting future video.
To really get the best, you need both as they have different characters depends what you want, the oberheim is more airy panned out and brash. The prophet more constrained, clearer and smoother. In the originals the best of both worlds is a jupiter 8
I generally preferred the Prophet in this test, which is weird because I’d keep my OB6 over the P6 if pushed! Maybe that means I should be cashing the P6 in for a P5/10! 😅
@@SpacehotelMusic Interesting to hear someone with a similar view. If you had were given an OB-X8 tomorrow would you sell the OB-6 or do you think it would still have a place?
I can't pick really. The prophet is an awesome synth that plays with itself and others nicely. It's the best all rounder for me. The oberheim is brash, huge and really forward. The only answer is to have both. I'm hoping for an OBX8 module. Together they're magic.
i sold my SEM for £1700 a month ago - have to say , its not worth it ... but how amazing is that - bought for 1200 - and sold for more - not many synths do that
Falcon was killing Jack up until round 4 then Jack came back. I was proposing putting Jack behind the camera and having Falcon only onscreen but it was even haha. Both monsters synths though. I picked up the pro 3 SE so I get both the OB filter and Prophet filter without selling my house! (plus mono > poly) :DD
I'm not sure whether it's down to whether Prophet sounds better than Oberheim or vice versa, but Prophet is more generic, middle of the road and Oberheim is instantly and only Oberheim. I've got things like rev 2, prologue, mfb synth Pro, Nymphes, JD-XA, Waldorf M and I don't feel that the Prophet would add a vastly different, instantly recognisable sonic pallete, but the Oberheim would. Nothing I've got can go anywhere near the distinctive Oberheim sound. Both are great but one is unique, I've heard a flipside argument that the Oberheim is more limited, more of an acquired taste and harder to sit nicely in the mix.
Prophet is definitely the more "utilitarian" choice because that midrange presence and smooth filter allows it to really sit nicely in the mix without too much compression or EQing. But the Oberheim definitely has deeper sound design options with the different filter slopes and the state variable quality, and it just sounds MASSIVE in a way that the Prophet can't quite do. I think Oberheim excels at fat low end and the detuned leads are great but Prophet is better for mellower pads and is more well-rounded. Basically I think Prophet is "jack of all trades" and a great synth if you can only have one, and Oberheim is a "specialist" for specific sounds. This is why the best musicians in the world wanted both in the 80's, they are actually super complementary tone-wise
After this vid (well designed and well made) I would prefer the Obie. But anyway... 5k are too much. With such a price I would ask virtual analog, wavetables, stereo, effects, matrix modulation, software driving in my DAW. I don't play to remember analog days. I play live in a cover band to have fun. I would consider something more up to date like Arturia Polybrute (never tested, I am afraid to fall in love). To survive I am living with a huge number of VST things, cheaper and more flexible. Of course I am missing the "two hands more parameters editing" effect and the feticism. But I must pay my bills...

3:19 Jack, your mate Falcon is at a disadvantage.
"What's the patch called?"
"113."
"Oh, mine's called 'Warm 80s pad.'"🤣😂😅👍
Need to tape over Jack's LCD display next time.😂😂😂
10:00 Yeah. Just that has an early 1980s hit written around it. I can hear the other instruments. It's made for a hit song. Beautuful sound. So simple.🤗
drinking game, do a shot every time they fist bump.
That outro beat slaps!
They're both awesome. couldn't afford either but I think the Prophet might be easier to fit in a busy mix/song. It's defo smoother. If you can afford both get both!
1:24 Great stuff on the two shillings. Has to be a sterling silver one pre-1920.😊 Or the 50% silver ones pre-1947 were very handsome coins too.
I thought you were going to use a Bitcoin or a Doge for a minute!😂
I have a Prophet 10, but now I also want an OB-X8. The Moog Muse seems pretty sweet as well
Smashing shorts guys!
Falcon busting out the 80s quartal sus chords 💯
You know how it is 😉
Prophet-10 an OB-X8 : we have together the complete range of analog vintage sound
Moog One : Hold my jack !
Voting for a The Captain meets the Maltese Falcon right here!
Why has Falcon taken his pants off and done the video in his boxers?????
What can I say, it’s been a real struggle lately with these electricity bills 😢
What a nice Video. A barely know any other RUclipsr, who’s spreading such a positiv feel-good-vibe in his videos like you do! Please keep it up. And concerning the oberheim vs prophet topic: what amazing Instruments - both! And to finalize with Stevie Wonders superstition: Nothing more to say! Greetings from Germany
Got my OB-X8 last week it rules. Pairs well with my OB-6.
"pairs" yeah right 😂
Hands down the Oberheim, f'ing brilliant machine!
I have a prophet 5 and an OBXa and I pick OB. Oberheims to me just have this amazing phase and density that is unrivaled in this class.
It’s like the old Oberheim slogan: “Some things are better than others!”
WHY NOT BOTH.
Lets be honest, if you can afford one you can probably afford the other.
I called it a draw, but I'd take the Prophet... Unless you were giving them away in which case I'd take the Oberheim, sell it, buy the Prophet, and have a weekend in Bognor on the change.
I say that Falcon's shorts won the battle
You could just get both MIDI’d together and have a BOberPhet or ProfitHeim.
the oberheim should not use the stereo spread to be a more fair (and useful) comparison
Both the Prophet-10 and OB-X8 are at the very top of my list. 😊
I definitely prefer the Prophet sounds and think it looks better as well. I really don't like the design of the Oberheim
This is a really great and fun video guys.🤗👍👍👍👍
This was fun to watch. Maybe do the same type of head to head again but with other synths which are both in similar price brackets etc.
They both sound wonderful.
To really get the best, you need both as they have different characters depends what you want, the oberheim is more airy panned out and brash. The prophet more constrained, clearer and smoother. In the originals the best of both worlds is a jupiter 8
Dope stuff guys!
Id get the OB-x8, but by the time I had it all setup with effects I’ll spend so much I might as well get a desktop Prophet too. So both 😁
Awesome! More videos like this 🎉
I generally preferred the Prophet in this test, which is weird because I’d keep my OB6 over the P6 if pushed! Maybe that means I should be cashing the P6 in for a P5/10! 😅
I've had a Prophet 6 and now a prophet 10. The sound quality is much better. (I also have an OB-6 which I preferred to the Prophet 6)
Well, great - I guess the winner is you need BOTH of them!
i sold my SEM for £1700 a month ago - have to say , its not worth it ... but how amazing is that - bought for 1200 - and sold for more - not many synths do that
Falcon was killing Jack up until round 4 then Jack came back. I was proposing putting Jack behind the camera and having Falcon only onscreen but it was even haha. Both monsters synths though. I picked up the pro 3 SE so I get both the OB filter and Prophet filter without selling my house! (plus mono > poly) :DD
the searing guitar patch on the oberheim reminded me of frankenstein by edgar winter
yes.
Super awesome comparison! Oberheim is my pick but the Prophet sounds like a dream! Both please!
Jack, please bring Nice Mike w/ a Yammy versus Dan with a Prophet-analog. Give them 2mins with control adjustments. Five categories.
That Oberheim sound…
This made me smile 😁
man it's my dream to own one of these
It’s the Prophet for me.
Awesome! Now that is fun
Both sound great but they are two different beast
I think the oberheim sounds more fat but the prophet sits in a mix just right
