Nice to find your channel for a peaceful home. I think since I was married 59 years ago, I always sorted by categories. However, I don’t take all books into one spot that would be too much. I take just the garden books or medical books and such. I do the same with clothes, just the pants and so on. All discarded papers, magazines, and such go right into the recycle bin. I make sure I remove any personal information which I shred. I take that when I’m on an errand that goes by the recycling center. I have a backlog of paperwork😮. I am starting similar to what you showed with current paperwork. I basically do the same procedure. I sort it by medical, receipts, household, exercise, and so on. It is good to do it along with someone. I am happy to see that other people scribble notes and whatever is handy usually on the back of an envelope. After working on the current paperwork, I will watch your other paperwork one. I will be retiring from my job in about six months as a church music Director. Then I can get rid of a lot that I won’t need anymore. It is Interesting that Maria Kondo no longer does things like she did when she did not have kids when it was easy to put everything in one spot. @@bitrudder3792 Absolutely! I personally hang onto my manuals just because I am a paper person, and I prefer that to looking online. Sometimes I have looked online for how to and it was very quick and easy. The most important thing is having them up-to-date. I’m always amazed when I go through them to see how many I have to get rid of because I no longer have that item. I try to keep eep them paired down and they fit easily in a small drawer. You are totally right - it is so worth it to know where that information is when you need it!!! 😁😁😁
I can’t believe I’ve found someone who is a micro organizer like myself! I keep many of the same things you do. However, I find myself inundated with papers to sort through. This video is inspiring me to tackle my stack again. I have my filing down to one desktop hanging file basket so you’d think it would be quick and easy, but it’s all the things I “might” want to reference that bog me down. I also have plenty of genealogy records and resources that need to be RE-organized!

I have sorted through my stack of genealogy info that I have been collecting and sorted by surnames and put in each family binder. Next I will sort info in each binder according to the indexes I’ve created. All I need is TIME! 😊 Thank you and I hope you have a beautiful day.
Look into the Freedom Filer system, it's a way of filing that makes it very easy and logical to get rid of things as you go. It takes a little bit more thought upfront, but it's kind of genius.
@@MyBlessedNest - I can go on for a long time about how great the system is, which I did elsewhere here 🤣 but I wanted to mention that the concept applies whether you're doing traditional hanging files, digital files, binders, open boxes.… I'm noticing that you enjoy containers and that you put them out in the open where you can see them instead of in a box where you cannot see them. That's an organizing preference and you can make the concept of Freedom Filer work with that!
I am so wanting to get rid of my huge filing cabinets too! I have a whole drawer for mortgage documents and another whole drawer for taxes right now. So much clutter. But I heard I have to hold onto my mortgage stuff because whenever a mortgage changes hands from one company to another, they don't necessarily hang on to your information anymore so it's good to have all your mortgage information throughout the years. For taxes, I went really extreme and reduced it to going three years back. But I am now rethinking that and maybe I should go seven years back. All this paperwork stuff is so hard and I always lose stuff ALL the time!
@@judyking4597 I feel you. I really tend to scatter paper. I have reduced so much paper clutter but if I temporarily put paper somewhere else, I’m in trouble and I lose things. I’ve got to keep all my current stuff in one basket and go through it one day a week. I know it’s easier for other people who don’t seem to have it hanging around all the time, but Paper and I are attracted to each other and I’m trying to break off the relationship! 😂😂😂
@@myonlinepresence7833 Awesome! It is so amazing, when a little time passes, you realize you can declutter even more! Great job, MOP! (my online presence) 😁😁😁
I'm so glad you paused to deal with the increasing piles around you. How often has that been me? I remember way back when, and I was surrounded by piles like that. I took a tip from David Allen, of "getting things done" fame. With a twist. I put a whole lot of hanging folders in a box, but I took his tip in hand writing topics on folders which I could stick into the hanging files in a way where they would stick up so I could see them without continually adjusting them to make them stand up straight. I had an idea of some of the topics for my paperwork, and wrote those ahead of time (File to permanent, file to finances, file to taxes, file two projects, file to contacts, file to specific year archives, things like that) but when a new topic or project came up I could quickly write on another folder and put it into the file box. Every so often I would alphabetize them a bit to make it easier to find topics. It kept the mess in one place! I have been filing with very specific file names like insurance, Medical, etc. and each file had so many things in it that needed to be purged! Or archived! Finding things in those fat files was terrible! I love learning new things and having papers at my fingertips when I'm ready to work on things. So mostly I rely on file cabinets and hanging folders. And I use the Freedom Filer system that combines generic file labels that don't have to be changed as often, and files that rotate in a logical way, so I can quickly see when it's time to purge or permanently file different receipts and statements etc., or how long it has been since I have worked on a project (with the idea that if it's been a very long time I may not need to keep it). When you buy the FF system, it comes with tons of pre-printed useful labels and blank labels that you can write on or use their template to print customized labels to suit yourself that all look consistent. And if coursr you can achieve the same thing with a little work on the computer - I created a similar system in pastel colors for my daughter using their concepts. And it's easy to print new labels from the simple word document I created to make the labels with - A simple word document, some scissors, and Avery file tabs is how I made them look just as good as any custom label from a company. It's fun to make custom file labels when you have time to nitpick. And frankly, as I get older I find myself dreaming of another creative effort with very large print file labels! In my active file section, some of the busiest folders include my "shred," "Repurpose," "recycle," "File," and "ASAP." I'm not always next to my shredder or my recycle bin! One of my favorite things to do is shred each year at the end of a purge cycle, shred receipts every week if it's cash for perishables, every other month for receipts that might involve reconciling an account, to shred project notes that I have transcribed and synthesized, etc. 😂 There is something so final about putting something into a shredder! Everything that I might want to shred is put into a location where I know that it's ready to shred at different intervals. Sometimes it's the little things in life that bring so much joy! Like having less decision-making around paper… And having less of it pile up.
@@bitrudder3792 Thanks for your thoughtful and detailed comment. You are making me want to look at FF again and change my whole system! 😂 I do think it is a very good system for people who have quite a bit of paperwork. Thanks for watching! 😊
Just cleaned out my mother in laws room in her assisted living facility as she had to move to a higher level of care. I took all of her paperwork and plan to sort and file it all and shred everything that needs to go. Still video was motivating
In a time management class years ago, we were advised to “handle it once”. The idea being you deal with the paper or the item right then rather than throw it in a box or on top of a pile to handle later. The idea was to not double the time you dealt with any one item. I know life gets hectic and we can’t always stop to pay a bill or file something as soon as it comes into our house, but handling it sooner than later was their advice. I think they also realized that out of sight out of mind can be a problem and those stacks and boxes get full if we are not disciplined to take care of them weekly. Any thoughts you have on this are appreciated. Especially tips on being disciplined to not let things pile up. Thanks.
@@KarenCerny Hi, Karen! Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. I do agree to a certain extent with “handle it once”. Everyone Hass to try different things and systems evolve to the point where hopefully they work best for us. I deal with my mail every single day. I saw it right next to the trashcan and immediately throw away the junk, open bills, and toss extra envelopes. If I have time, then I will put things like invitations in my planner and write the details on my calendar and a note on my to do list to RSVP. Bills and other things go into my inbox. Every Friday I pull that out and do my best to empty it completely. This means bills may need to be paid and I may need to inquire about something or ordersomething. Also, if I have started a project or picked up a birthday card for someone, as I am picking up around the house, I will put those things in the inbox as well. This way all of my paper is in one spot. It’s important to develop a routine and even set an alarm on your phone to check the inbox weekly. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and for commenting. 😊

I feel like this was a realistic look at paper clutter. I've watched some videos on paper clutter and only bills and junk mail was mentioned. There is soooo much more paper clutter than that!
I'm looking at my grocery list on the back of an envelope right now. I used to have papers everywhere, in boxes in closets, under the bed, piled up, I got a handle on that years ago, now I have a filling cabinet and a couple of drawers in the kitchen. My problem is I have certain files that are now enormous and I'm not sure what exactly I should keep and I can't seem to find a list anywhere of what is required to keep. I know income tax is seven years but it's random stuff that has me wondering. I found papers for my maternity leave and reports from csst 😂 my son is twenty five years old but there's a file 😅.
@@nicoleperron3315 Haha…I am not alone! 😂 You have done such good work paring down! Wow. I think removing by layers is natural because year-by-year we see the things we don’t need to hang onto. I do have a list in the more extensive video that is linked with this video. It might be helpful. @@rebekaharnold647 Statistically, it is very rare for people to actually look back at old workbooks or notebooks. It really depends on whether or not you think you might go back through them. @@teresaelling-peacefulhome I know I do not go back to them, but as I do now, there are a few journal items that are tugging at me. I do feel the freedom to get rid of the workbooks. It is building my stamina to do more paper!

Let them go! I held on to mine for several years thinking I’d go back and fill in days I’d miss or read through the study again. I never did. I flipped though and read some of the pages to see how God worked in my life, and then I threw them out. I felt so much lighter. Thanks so much for watching and for commenting! 😊
Deb here. I have a lot of paperwork. I disagree with only keeping 7 years of tax returns. If you get audited by the IRS and they find a mistake, they can go back more than 7 years. Also, when you sell a stock, you need to know the original purchase price in order to calculate the capital gain tax. When you have rental property, you need to know how much you bought it for when you sell it. One time in order to get reimbursed for a class action suit for foreign transaction fees, you needed your credit card statements which some banks only keep so much electronic statements on line. Instead of only getting $200 if you did not have receipts, we got over $900 since we had the credit card statements filed and could provide copies. I would rather have paper to retrieve instead of having to download statements every month on the computer.
@@rickgonzalez1218 Thanks for sharing, Deb!! You bring up some really great points and I appreciate your comment. 😁 The industry standard for taxes is seven years. I just go with that. As far as the other things you mentioned, those are definitely outside of the average person’s realm. All of the clients I have dealt with in over 20 years. I’ve never had those types of financial dealings. Most people, because they keep so much paperwork that is so unorganized even be able to find the things you were talking about! 😂 If you do need those documents, then I absolutely recommend that you save hardcopies. Absolutely!

I emptied my overflowing In-basket and put it back in the kitchen for incoming mail each day until my husband and I each go through it.
I have sorted through my stack of genealogy info that I have been collecting and sorted by surnames and put in each family binder. Next I will sort info in each binder according to the indexes I’ve created.
All I need is TIME! 😊

Good job! 😁
Shredding is another issue…often my “to shred” pile sits around FOREVER!
Look into the Freedom Filer system, it's a way of filing that makes it very easy and logical to get rid of things as you go. It takes a little bit more thought upfront, but it's kind of genius.
@@bitrudder3792 thanks I will! 🤗

@@judyking4597
I feel you. 😂😂😂
Oooooh! I sent piles of paper to the shredder/recycling last week. Am inspired to go deeper now too!

Haha…right? 😂
Thanks.
@@KarenCerny
Hi, Karen!

Thank you for your guidance with setting a peaceful home. Question - I have many workbooks from past Bible studies. As has happened before with sentimental items, I've had an inkling that I could let go of those workbooks. Do you keep all of your student Bible study materials? Thank you
@@rebekaharnold647
Statistically, it is very rare for people to actually look back at old workbooks or notebooks. It really depends on whether or not you think you might go back through them. I will usually keep things like that for 1 to 3 years. After that, if I haven’t needed it, I am ready to let it go.
Thanks for a great question! 🤩

I think Bible studies are tougher because they are like journals… it’s not just our study of the word, but our application as well, which often reminds us of certain times in our lives. 😊
Let them go! I held on to mine for several years thinking I’d go back and fill in days I’d miss or read through the study again. I never did. I flipped though and read some of the pages to see how God worked in my life, and then I threw them out. I felt so much lighter. The work the Holy Spirit did inside you at that time of the study is all you need to take forward. Good luck!

You bring up some really great points and I appreciate your comment. 😁
The industry standard for taxes is seven years.
If you do need those documents, then I absolutely recommend that you save hardcopies. I keep all of my receipts, tax statements and credit card statements needed for taxes in paper form.
