After watching your video on EQ adjustments, and this one, I'm left wondering: when have I hit an annoying resonate frequency? I know it's different for every voice, but if you could spend some time explaining each frequency you adjust, why you don't like its sound, and what you're accomplishing by changing it (maybe with some back and forth examples), it would go a long way in helping those of us who are just getting into all of this. Thanks! Great stuff as always!
Hey, I see that Alex hasn't been able to reply to this comment (I don't know if he made a video about it). In my personal experience, hearing annoying freq is a skill that comes with time, practice and patience. The best place to start is with your own voice, find freq that sound weird/strange to you and dip those. I hope that helps. Have a great day.
Another thing to consider in addition to Demigod's comment from a month ago is that the frequencies that you'd be sweeping for and indentifying as "annoying" can change completely, depending upon not only the equipment you're using but most importantly the recording space that you record in;
- How well treated is the space?
- Are there reflective surfaces in the space like a computer monitor or music stand (etc) that could be contributing a subtle reverb "splashback"?
- Has the gain been set too high or "hot" so the mic & recording has been naturally more sensitive to room noise?
- In fact, was the noise floor analysed before recording to see if there were any obvious intrusive audio artefacts or sounds being picked up?
Hopefully you've continued to grow your skills in this regard in the year since you posted your question, but it would still be cool to see a video along the lines that you've suggested.

Hi Alex, I have just seen a couple of your videos, you naturally have a very nice tone of voice so it is not difficult to create a fantastic voice, I have a nasal tone of voice but with a sharper line, I am a public speaker and therefore very often I make videos on any professional theme and when I hear my voice I shiver and it literally makes my skin crawl. Can you give me a hand in this regard? I asked you the question and I hope you have time to answer me. Thank you so much, your videos are great

I do have a question for you. What tips would you give to reduce the harshness of plosives while recording, besides using a pop filter? My accent is naturally pretty harsh, and a pop filter alone isn't enough. I'd like to minimise processing because the turnaround is killing me.

Hi Alex. What about LUFS normalization? I saw your episode on "How to get the right levels".. I guess that you take part at recording and editing audio in the processing of make a film. When do you release a video for a film or documentary at what point do you normalize, if you do that? At the beginning or at the end of the audio editing process?

I find that a pop filter isn't necessary if you're facing slightly off to the side of the mic instead of head on, but I'm guessing this is easier to get away with if you're over a foot away from the mic

Yes! All the skills I talk about can translate between any software or similar plugin. So what I just did in my EQ can work in your EQ too.
I kept thinking why you don't have a lot of views and subscribers although your video recording and post work is excellent. And even the content is super-great. I ended up with this, you're not talking to laymen like us, you're talking to professionals. If you want more views, you have to simplify your speech some more. And give examples for everything. The amount of information you covered in this video can easily be split into three or four videos for laypeople who log-on to youtube just to chill can enjoy and learn something. You should check-out Brandon Li, a film maker who explains his specialty in such a simple way.

Excellent advice. If we use denoiser and amplifier where to use them in the beginning of this or at the end?
Denoiser first of all so you do not introduce any noise in the chain
short and sweet.
So for order of filters...
1. Equalizer
2. Compressor
3. DeEsser
4. Limiter
Is that right? I always struggle with this. I seem to hear different advice from from different audio folks.
That's how I generally like to do it and how I was taught. Generally, EQ first because you doing anything else first may throw it off. Limiter last because it's just the thing you use before you merge with video or send it in for broadcast/DCP/etc
Most major level mixers use that order of processing. Some use other plugins in addition to this, but the “standard” dialog chain is EQ > Comp > DeEss.

Before the EQ! So you’re not including noise in anything else you’re doing.
What a helpful video that can be followed by even a sound newbie like me. Something really useful would be if you continued talking but turned all of the edits off and on at the end so I could hear the stark difference instead of the gradual improvements throughout the video. Not a criticism... I'm just excited to learn more!
this is all great information, but are there any tips and tricks to the actual practice of voice overs? i have noticed alot of times with mine when i speak there is oftentimes a lot of phlegm that makes wet noise as i talk and no matter how much i try there is always this presence of either a lot of saliva or phlegm. i heard once that a good trick to reduce the production of saliva and clear phlegm was to brush your teeth, tongue, and the roof of your mouth shortly before doing a recording and that will solve the problem but i have never tried it. is that actually sound advice or just a fable? i can see how this might work but i dont fancy the idea of brushing my tongue or the roof of my mouth frequently just to do some recordings. other things i wondered were
1. is it best to face directly towards the mic when talking or is it best to look off center (left or right of the mic)
2. is it better to be standing and delivering a line than it would be sitting down?
emphasis on key words, but i have also heard the opposite, that hand gestures and movement can muddy and ruin the audio. which one is true? or is there a bit of truth in both?
sorry for so many questions, i have been wanting to try and get into doing simple voice overs for my videos but what i have made so far sounds so very awful and i cant seem to make it sound halfway decent. i figured maybe if theres a way i can improve the quality i could start by ensuring that i am personally performing at my best and delivering the lines clearly and as clean as possible. i would also love to maybe try and donate some lines for generic voice overs and contribute in some way. but for now id like to focus on personal improvements to myself and then tackle other issues like microphone being used, audio software, editing... you know things that will and or might take money to fix. i know i am the cause of alot of the issues so i was hoping to learn some best practices to learn how to deliver lines better.
If I turn the volume up over 50% on this video, my Beats Pill buzzes constantly. Not a problem with other source audio. Just a thought. Respect ❤
What are the differences between the results you get from the scarlett solo 3rd gen and the scarlett 2i2 2nd gen?
The difference is that the "Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen" only has 1 XLR and 1 Jack input
and the "Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen" has 2 XLR inputs / 2 Jack inputs (combi).
Alex. How would you "improve" the Zoom/Call voices in recorded sessions. These days I have quit some podcast because of the bad quality of sound.
There is a setting in zoom to record the original sound from each person as an separate track, else you can use something like cleanfeed for the audio

If anyone would mind watching one of my very few videos, I would appreciate vocal feedback because I hate hearing myself speak. Tips to prevent my voice from cracking, squeaking, and a way to sound less irritating would also be helpful.
I checked one video, and I hear a lot of sound from the room. You voice seems ok to me. To reduce room noise: place mic not close to walls, use soft materials like carpet, talk direction to the middle of the room (not to a wall), use a dynamic microphone (that doesn't pick up room noise that much).

Bro I was going along until you said you were using a Neumann. Dude you don't make a tutorial for beginners and just casually throw in you've got the most expensive mic in the market, most of us have an AT2020 at maximum lmao
It’s not about the tools; it’s about the techniques to get the most out of them.
My first mic was a used $10 SM58 clone made by Nady. Now I have (among other things) a SM58 that I use all the time. These same ideas can apply to mics in any price range.
The TLM103 is hardly the most expensive, and it’s far from the “best” sounding. Just because something is expensive doesn’t make it “the best”…just like something that’s cheap doesn’t make it “the worst”.
This particular mic (on my voice) produces sound that balanced “good” in some areas with “could use improvement” in others, and behaves in ways that are a good middle ground between budget friendly mics and high end mics.
You literally said so in the video and somehow all dude heard was Neumann. Smh

I'm sorry but you cannot generalize the postproduction of a voice over as you do, especially when you talk about the use of the EQ, that could be very different according to the mic, the room (or the vocal booth) and the voice (tone, gender). For instance, you cut the high frequency, but is not always necessary cutting that way. For sure with a Neumann TLM 103 that cut could make sense, but because Neumann make this mic with a boost to high frequency that many other microphones don't have. So the first CRUCIAL suggestion before cutting frequencies with the EQ is to take a look at the FREQUENCY RESPONSE of the mic!
Besides repeating everything he already said in the video except checking the frequency response of a mic, he said he has detailed videos of several of these processes. Gaddamn so quick to criticize without actually listening...which I would imagine is key as an engineer. Amazing.

This content has a specific audience, so there no need to do fast and catchy video with incomplete infos, just good one where taking the time needed to let people (especially who start this job) understand what they are doing when they use plugin (or if they should use it).
