To people starting out, here's my story: I started learning on september 1st 2021. Adding up all my breaks I've had 5 months of just breaks spread out in the year following that date. Around september 20th 2022 I got a job offer after a trial period, which I declined because of multiple reasons having to do with the company. After that I was forced to stop for 2 months, and after that I started an art project that I couldn't refuse without knowing how gigantic it would be, and I have Photoshop open with it as I'm typing this. The second I finish this project from hell I'm going to finish my 3rd portfolio piece along with the portfolio itself which is almost finished. After that remake my CVs according to the research I've done about them and then start applying.
It is possible, it just takes a lot of work. And if I could get a remote job offer with no college and no high school diploma in a very traditional 2nd world country you can too.

I started learning to code in 2021 mid november when I dropped out of college , took some break and that too learning more about linux and game dev and learnt most of web dev from odin project's website and discord server, sadly enough people forced me to go to college again which currently has zero coding culture. Currently I am planning to apply for jobs after feb and if by chance I got one with a favourable pay, then I will drop out again...

    • @thewaskakashi3306
      @thewaskakashi3306 Год назад

@@killerdroid99 i guess you're making the best decision there, a college diploma isn't bad and helpful in many ways when you got the time and money for it but at the same time if you had the opportunity to actually get a good job offer then i guess it's not even comparable.
That's my personal perspective as someone who's major is economics but wanting to be a software engineer

i'm an employed self-taught software engineer. it changed my life. i still don't really recommend self taught to people(in USA). it was extremely difficult to get a job, and luck factored in a ton. when people tell you that something is hard, your first instinct is saying "yea i can handle hard". it's much harder than "hard". i'm a tough guy and i cried multiple times after 200~ rejected applications to jobs that i was ultimately qualified for. the first job i got was for a shady company that didn't know what they were doing, hiring anybody they could touch because they didn't know better. you'd think you get this moment of catharsis for your first job( you did it!), but no, it feels like i just got lucky. i know plenty of people who are more talented than i(and probably more talented than whoever is reading this too!) and are unable to get a job atm. it breaks my heart. "it's not about what you know, but who you know". if you know the hiring manager, your chances of getting the job multiply 10. if you know someone that can vouch fort you, your chances multiply by 10. it's sad, it's unfair, but that's how it goes in most companies. i could walk up to my manager today and recommend my brother and he'd probably get the job even though he is far from the perfect candidate.

but sir, some bootcamp costs a fortune, I know many ppl for whom these bootcamps become a problem, as even after getting into a bootcamp, there is no real guarantee job, because only a person who has skills gets jobs. I'm a self employed web developer with 10+ years experience (i'm 31 years old) and i can totally approve what is said in the video. Great video Dorian, as always i love your honesty. You don't sugarcoat any of the topics or try to be overhyped as other youtubers do. Big thumbs up! :)
Some additions: Here in Hamburg (Germany), many small companies (4-20 employees) are desperate to find web developers with average to good knowledge. It's definitely not oversaturated here. But you won't get rich doing the job either. I assume people are going the self employment route as i just did recently, because it's just much better payment and also workflows are a tough topic to argue about in already existing companies. Within a few month (3-4) of being self employed i already have 4 projects to work on. I had none before and didn't have a job right before that either. It's a great opportunity. All my contacts/projects/jobs came through free online advertisement. My "Equipment" is basically just 1 Laptop that i work on.
The only greatest comptition i have are indian website creators. They do it so cheap, i simply can't keep up. This is where customer service, support and consulting comes in. Don't treat your customers as money sources, but as someone you actively work with. Try to create a great website so your customers product becomes more successful and then you will get recommended and will also have more requests from your customer to further improve their website. But even with the indian competitors, i recently just got a contact from india to develop a website for. Simply put, for me, working as a self employed web developer is like helping friends with their individual projects. I take note of the time and effort i had and write an invoice at the end of each month. I really enjoy it so far.
For whoever wants to know more, here's some history: I started working with all the different media in general late in school. (around when i was 15 years old) That school also included some veeery basic html. I really enjoyed that during that time and i wanted to learn more. One step at a time i improved myself over the years, but still never touched databases or PHP. Then i started learning PHP through w3schools (great website btw.) and got my first real job as a web dev. Learned the professional ways to use PHP, JS and bits of HTML and CSS. From that on everything i learned was based on practical experience. Learning by doing. SEO, customer service, pricing, consulting, teaching CMS basics to customers and so on. 10 years later i'm here working on my own. :) I never went to university or any similar institution. The schools were the starting point, but i can also recommend the website w3schools if real schools are not an option.
Edit: None of my relatives have anything to do with PCs, electronics or anything similar. All of the above came from my own will to learn. My parents are not rich in any way, but they were very supportive, which is sadly not standard in todays world.

I don’t think it’s jobs aren’t hiring. It’s most (not all but the vast majority especially on LinkedIn and indeed), want 3+ years experience for a junior position that pays little compared to the experience they want. I’ve seen plenty of job listening requires 3 years in various programming languages (JavaScript, python, C#) as a Junior dev. It’s crazy what’s listing nowadays.
My biggest advice is: work a full time job you can work to sustain progress in life. During your spare time learn code and have fun making projects you enjoy making. Over time that portfolio will build up and you can enjoy it while also progressing in life.
Find what languages/stack you want to study and get some books on them. Ignore RUclips trends and FOCUS. Focus on those books and the things you’ve outlined. Trends will change but you’ll notice there is a job for every roadmap. Read during lunch at work and code a project after work based off what you read. At least that what I did 👍

The closest, and I mean closest, to self taught programmers are the old school ones, I guess from 2010 backwards, when the internet was massively smaller as a whole(let alone IT materials and even more specific sub IT field materials). In my opinion, those are the master class master programmers. And eventhough that might sound discouraging, try to ignore that when it comes to your studying and entrance into this field, if you find the passion, no matter where or when, that's the most important, and as this guy said, it's never going to be useless to start learning whatever new skill there is or comes up. Keep yall heads up and just enjoy it.

Relational databases don't scale. That's the whole point of NoSQL. Conceptually, relational databases are strictly better. No structural relationships like in your Windows file system, everything is relational and it's highly flexible, and we wish we could use them for everything. But when you get a million users with a million save files, suddenly it comes crashing to the ground.

Do you think that it still makes sense to learn to code in this time of AI?

Somehow I feel too stupid to learn coding. I took one SQL course and I was just…lost. Entirely lost without the instructor walking me through each query haha. Maybe it was the teacher I wasn’t compatible with, but I feel like we were being fed pre set equations (without any logic attached to them) rather than being taught a coding language that we could adapt, apply and be flexible with. 😅 am I considering the wrong profession based on that perspective? Lol

Damn, Im almost 30y.o and going to get degree. There are lots of difficulties on my way- full time job, currently unemployed, life struggles and etc, also I fear that after I get degree I wont be able to pay off my student debt, as software job becomes obsolete or smth like this

I have a questions for everyone that'd like to help me out.. I just started a college career in my country Costa Rica. Is a private university and I'm learning software engineering. I also started a online business with AI and I'm creating websites with chatGPT and mid journey. I want to learn code (especially python and JavaScript for web development)
My question is, in your opinion should I pause my career st college to pursuit my business online? I want to scale my business but I'm currently working 9-5 and I barely have time after I stared my colleague education.
I guess I want to know from someone else perspective, if it's really worthy to spend 4-5 years at college to get a job or should I just learn on my own?
Sorry if it's hard to understand me my English is not great but I do greatly appreciate everyone's advice ❤️👍

I loved this coment: "Maybe you are just a degenerate who lives at home in your parents basement and all you do is play video games all day and you decide it"
Cause' that's who I am in this moment lol, those was hard words for me but I'm gonna try to change that this year and I'll finally gonna learn how to code and get a job at my 28's.
I like a lot your videos because they are so real, and I hope that you can read this comment xD
I really appreciate your content because you say the true in your videos and not a fantasy stuffs like other people, well maybe I should get my ass out of the bed and start to do great stuffs right now, I lost 10 years of my life doing shitty but, I guess that I can still do something with my life.
    Have a nice year man!

Had to unsub to a lot of coding channel because of this (concept in the video). Watched them for tutorials and concepts and 90% made a 2023 video about why at the end you gotta buy their course because if you want to succeed, you need them as a mentor.
Now I only sub to people who don’t push courses or “mentorship” (getting paid to tell you same info that’s online), but actually provide value on RUclips.
