    I've never found use for the crossfader until I start mixing 45records. Not for scratching but for cutting/switching/fastmixing records. Not the best crossfader on my Xone:92 but it works. 😊

    I like the first comment you're reading, it depends on the genre. I recently started mixing Dancehall and Soca, and a lot of the songs are on the same riddims (the same instrumentals). So you want to switch from one channel to the other in the fraction of a second. The crossfader is very good for it.

    • @alanmodimages
      @alanmodimages 3 года назад

      Yes. Not much blending with Soca, otherwise it gets messy :)

    • @originalulix
      @originalulix 3 года назад +1

      @@alanmodimages Yeah there's basically always vocals, which is a bit annoying when you're trying to mix. Thinking of doing my own DJ mixes on PC of some tracks, add a few more instrumental sections at the beginning or end (if I have a clean riddim instrumental). This is obviously only useful for mixing from one riddim to the next. What's good though: a lot of tracks, especially when it comes to Soca, have long intros of basically only vocals (with a bit of snare etc.).
      So if you're coming from something like Afro House you're golden.

    • @alanmodimages
      @alanmodimages 3 года назад

      @@originalulix Totally agree. I want to get into more Afro House and South African stuff next. My wife is from Grenada so I know what you mean. I don't think they would tolerate not having a few "Shouts' and "Jump ups" at the start of their tunes! LOL

    when I was growing up I though the crossfader was cool, but ever since I picked up the craft, I never even use it, and tried to disable it, the up faders are much easier

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  3 года назад +1

      The crossfader is great and useful for lots of kinds of DJing, plenty of masters of the craft use it all the time

    • @TranceCore3
      @TranceCore3 3 года назад

      I think I can fine a unique way to implement it, since it can be faster than the up faders, I guess it's fair to say there's no one way to DJ, as long as you make it sound good.
      I probably wouldn't get a mixer without a crossfader, because I'm the kind of person who would rather have it than not, but it's cool they're looking out for both crowds

    Never had cross faders when I started DJing. Not part of my normal DJing but understand that they can be necessary with certain DJ techniques and genres. Busy doing the James Hype course and learning new uses for the cross faders. Coming from a radio DJ background I guess I just got accustomed to up faders. Always exciting exploring new techniques and options.

    I probably remarked on another post Phil, this is a timely topic :) I learned to spin on Disco, Euro and then House in the mid 80's. Crossfaders were used more as a live remixing tool back then. To grab different phrases from the same song, quickly do slap back echoes between rhythms and vocals, phasing, power offs, spin backs etc. Chicago House "Hotmix" Style was dependent on the crossfader. Crossfaders in essence were our special effects and we were much more interactive with the record than DJ's are today. Line faders were mostly used to match levels between different recordings and pressings. New York was more content with blending, so they continued to use Rotaries. A lot of the younger House and Techno DJ's grew up in the era of Trance and Industrial where there were not a lot of rhythmic breaks to manage through. The corssfader also came in handy when you had to "ride the pitch". No way to do that with both hands on the mixer. Open Format and you definitively need one. One day I will stop posting about this because times move on, but I think both sides of the story are relevant. If a DJ manages more of a continuous soundscape, they probably don't need a crossfader and a lot of House and Techno has been recorded that way over the last decade. If you need to manipulate the movement and placement of your content in any way, then a crossfader might be a good alternative to multiple cues and beat jumps. In any case, a good skill set to consider learning. Old man commentary done :)

    I have a Ddj 1000 and turned the fader off I play techno so it’s sounds like it a music thing. It’s a shame cross faders weren’t more intelligent so going from track to track had a better blend some how.

    • @phinds1
      @phinds1 3 года назад

      darryl Bingham dB_82 The “ better blend “ depends on you my friend. It’s not the equipment that’s going to do it. If your mixer/controller has adjustments for the crossfader curve play with them and you’ll see that you’ll be able to get that smooth blend you’re looking for!

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  3 года назад

    I don’t use cross faders, and it’s a godsend that newer mixers allow you to disable them. My first mixers from the early 90s had cross faders that you couldn’t disable and were a pain.

    I learned using the crossfader decades ago. When I started again with a controller, the dip in the middle was really noticeable in my recorded mix. That is why I switched to up fader mixing. I want to go back to the crossfader mixing is there a way to get rid of that dip of sound in the middle?

    • @digitaldjtips

    I missed the stream, watching it late, I'm a strip club DJ/MC. I just decided to hook up my Traktor S2 controller and I use the crossfader while switching to the next song to be able to talk on the mic without turning down each channel although it's only a 2 channel controller, but I find it just a tad more efficient...

    Ummm if you don’t know if the cross fader is essential you haven’t played on vinyl.

    • @digitaldjtips
      @digitaldjtips  3 года назад

      Disagree with that, the format is very little to do with crossfader use - genre seems to be a much bigger indicator. Plenty of DJs started off playing vinyl on mixers that didn't even have crossfaders!

      @@digitaldjtips Lemme re phrase it... Your just blending music together if you don’t have cross fader skills. I guess that’s what makes a turntablist619 or a DJ. I mean no I’ll will in saying this. I’m a old fart and using the cross fader was the main tool to manipulate music live.

    Any tips to help a scratch beginner that is struggling to scratch while using a crossfader?? It just doesn't feel right using both hands. I'm right handed but I don't know which hand to work the fader with.

    • @camoesobral
      @camoesobral 3 года назад

      I'm right handed and I use the right hand on the crossfader.
      In the begining is almost the same. But when you start to progress the crossfader mouvements are much harder than the record hand. It's better to use your stronger hand on the crossfader.

    • @jesuslovestheacid2162

      @@camoesobral keep your dominant hand for scatching, and your other for cross fading. Even when they cross on the other record player position.

      Good advice already given here, use your dominant hand on the crossfader. If you really want to learn to scratch check out our Scratching For Controller DJs course, it's in the sale at the moment :)
