Unused Big Three Network logos (1972)

- Early 1970s logos for CBS, ABC, and NBC featuring very early "computer animation" done by...surprise, surprise, Computer Animation Industries. From my knowledge, none of the networks used this, and I can see why. The animation quality itself was nothing ridiculously ahead of its time, but how they were made and the music (which never matched any of the company's identities, such as the NBC chimes) isn't fit for network television.
Check out where it came from:

When Scanimates and Moog Synthesizers were the new toys
Is it true?
@@WysterzStudioz Yes
@@midnight_styx Hm, Very Noice
@@WysterzStudioz is what true brah?
Kinda wish Toys R Us had them
Honestly, if the NBC ID had a futuristic 3-Chime Sound in place of the music at the end, the logo would definitely look broadcast ready.
It was unused due to NBC switching to a new logo before that one got out to TV
@@carsonneeley4862 I don’t think these were intended to be used. Probably just concepts that the Animation company did.
@@Flamingbro69 I think NBC scrapped it because of their new logo, because 3 years after, NBC switched to a new logo
These feel like logos from an alternate dystopian future, well from a 70’s sci-fi Film.
I was 7 years old in 1972. If I had seen any of these logos, I probably would've died of fright.
Kinda interesting how CBS’ ident was the only one to not have an iconic symbol.
And you can make out an eye-looking figure in the background
Rather interesting how they also decided to get rid of the circle from the ABC logo.
The CBS’ ident is obviously a ripoff of London Weekend Television’s 1969 ident
@@stthecat3935 I'd say it's more of a coincidence rather than a ripoff. It's not an exact copy and I doubt that the people designing the logo would have even seen or at the very least remembered the logo considering that they had stopped using it 2 years prior to the creation of these logos.
@@stthecat3935 yeah it kinda looks like it
Holy crap I thought this was just another parody but I then looked at the description.
It's weird how up until now I never knew this existed, it's kind of impressive yet weird at the same time
a year ago i said these were 15 years ahead of their time. looking back that’s a huge overstatement….if anything these are maybe built for the start of the computer age in 1978-83.
My only speculation is that it's probably just test logos, and was never intended to be used as actual IDs.

0:03-0:09 (other than the text) is actually resembling the CBS eye in a way
I See It Too!
@@JustJaidenism same
Hi
Me too i see that
Took me a few times to actually see the eye
These just SCREAM demo! The last two were pretty cool, though.
The CBS unused ID reminds me of one of the first IDs from LWT (London Weekend Television), one of the then-running franchises of ITV in the UK. This is because of the "external circle", which is similar to LWT's first one albeit more transparent and thinner. It also didn't include a 3rd overlapping "circle"; only the one whose perspective is the same across both sides. And please don't mention animation methods and music: they're totally different!
"From London Weekend" (dum-dum)...
It's been fifty years since computers are made. There are pure gold.
Animation and music like this feels like it would better fit a European TV network of the time, honestly (I may just have that particular Antenne 2 ID on the mind, but still).
0:00: CBS is owned by Paramount Global
0:09: ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Company
0:27: NBC is owned by Comcast
That ABC music is the stuff Boards of Canada is made of!
It’s amazing that ABC and CBS have used pretty much unchanged logos for decades. Sure there have been slight variations but the basic foundation remains unchanged.
it's actually kind of funny to see these works of art back in the early 70's
Epic find yo! I missed your finds at this point tbh.
you always find the juiciest logo content! synth music kinda reminds me of the work of derek scott
I'm really curious to delve into how graphics like this were made back then, they seem a bit ahead of their time! Nice find an upload dude, it was a good watch!
CAI seems to have been using vector monitors similar to an oscilloscope, maybe shooting that with another camera and doing more processing.
A technique that got a lot of use in the 70s, often referred to as "computer animation", was called Scanimate--they would scan in black and white artwork with a video camera at fairly high resolution, then display that on a monitor where they could apply different analog signals to the vertical and horizontal deflection coils to move, scale and distort the image in various ways. Then they'd shoot that video with another camera and send it to another stage that could add color and do other things to it--with really complicated animations there could be multiple stages like this. It was all analog. This stuff, though, looks like it might have been at least partly digital.
@@MattMcIrvin Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp and The Electric Company made serious use of those effects.
Were these really commissioned by the companies or did CAI just use their names to demonstrate how they would present company logos in their demo, and maybe perhaps the companies could see this and pick CAI up for more idents?
who is CAI? i don’t know much about things pre-80s
Computer Animation Industries.
I'm guessing it was the latter--that they were doing it on spec to try to sell their services.
I didn't even know these existed. Nice find tho
Well, the fact that these were *NEVER USED ON TELEVISION*
pretty much brings home the point of why NONE OF US knew these existed.
@@DLCOrganization Holy Shite, Mate, Calm Down.

A very nice find!
At the beginning of the abc ident, it sounded like " eminence front" by the who. Great video.
These are awesome.
Damn! That synth music and CGI is fuckin' brilliant!
I think it is Scanimate
@@nuker3272 It could be Scanimate, yes.
This goes especially for the NBC one imo
They all feel so therapeutic
1st sound likes solar system scope 2nd sound Sound likes 60s 70s Sacramento vibes 3rd sound likes feel likes interstate vibe
Like they did with the TV Guide logo.
beautiful
Viewer: I really hate the S From Hell Screen Gems logo. It gives me the willies.
CAI producer: Hold my beer.
The ABC one has got to be the best one
The NBC one gives me NES and Sega Genesis vibes
0:18 WTF! That music is a decade ahead of its time!
I’ve got to say, they look pretty.
And I sort of like the music as well.
don’t look at me
ABC is a banger
This has by far the most views (4200) I've seen a video of mine get in just *five days*...wow.
Can you blame them?
I wouldn't want all of the TV channels I could receive to look the same lol
Also, if you squint your eyes while looking at the CBS logo, you can see the eye.
You don't have to squint to see it
A E S T H E T I C
It seems weird when seeing the ABC logo without the circle part and just the text...
the NBC one is not that bad, but the music part, yeah it should have been the chimes.
I reuploaded these in 480x270.
Thank God they weren't used! Talk about childhood nightmares for Generation Xers!
*Long time no see, my friend.*
Don't You Mean Long Time No See No?
@@JustJaidenismnope, he probably his old friend.
The ABC music sounds like an intro to a Deep Purple song.
00:16 best moment
The NBC logo is the best one. All's it needed was its famous jingle.
personally, i don't think these were comissioned by any of the companies themselves, more of the CAI showing off how they can manipulate and animate still images by using these logos as an example.
the last one matched nbc to the letter.
Cool.
interesting.
My fav is the ABC one
Nice find no
The cbs one is weird since it does not have the famous all seeing eye but hey it’s cool to see a rare logo
and the NBC one doesn't have the chimns.
it kinda does, just probably hard to see in a 70s crt
The first one doesn’t have the “Eye From Hell”.
@@Musicradio77Network It does, and you can see it if you look around the CBS text, closely.
l might sound weird saying this, but the synth in the first two are actually cool...
Why do I get a 5 second ad? Darn it
0:03 it almost reminded me of the THX logo theme a bit
The sounds are more Minigame or 8-bit
Wow, they sure did get weird here
so THIS is where the big eye variant of cbs is
these were at least about 15 years ahead of their time
no...not nearly that much. these are only a few years ahead (I'd say they feel late 70s more than anything else)
@@alloyoopproductions9804 Iikely how designers in the 60s imagined late 90s/early 2000s graphics would be

I feel like the CBS one would've been better if it resembled the Eyemark more.
Sick tunes Dude! (Or dudet haha)
Interesting find No!
When i see these for first time i though that are one of your fake logos that you usually make
Those ident were shown on television
Oh, my ears!
Were those real?
*scary and cool*
Soooo trippy!! 😵💫😵🫨
My favorite ident is the one from CBS
The 3 Minimalist Amigos.
Acid was awfully strong back then.
So this is what 1972 looks like.
Seems like something from Europe. Or PBS.

Not bad, eh. I wish they were used in 1972.
NBC didn't use that because no chimes
But they did use this, which also doesn't have the chimes. ruclips.net/video/B25cISME--k/видео.html
They even got themselves sued for using that logo lol
To which they responded by making Nebraska TV (or whatever it's called) a new logo

Ding ding ding...W...T...F...!
I don’t understand why they didn’t use them! They would’ve been good!
Though, abc could’ve used a little work. There should’ve been a circle by the abc.
Not only should've been used in the 1970s, but also the 1980s.
NBC could've used the logo in the video in the 2000s if they wanted to!
I'm not sure how something can look/sound both of its time and ahead of its time all at once, but these sure fuckin' do.

In that universe, PBS took over all the networks.
Now make the "unused" Dumont, Paramount, FOX, UPN and WB logos. I'd love to see Michigan J Frog "animated" like that.
