The King of IDs, Logos, and Bumpers brings forth yet more wistful looks back at TV from a more refined, artistically appreciative age. I truly appreciate your work searching, collecting, and curating these gems of telephemera. Perhaps I'll find you a nice rarity. I'd love to see the late '70s bumper for Great Falls, Montana's KRTV that featured the "diamond ring" formed by that year's big solar eclipse, with a loud, descending tone into a...let's call it a sci-fi baritone Moog fart. I think another ID showed a slideshow of the moment Mt. Saint Helens tore itself a new one when the volcano's pressure became too great for one side of the mountain to contain.
These 1970s logos are so trippy and the synth i can't even believe they used them so much i personally like them but they sound like atari sfx no wonder my parents hate synthesizers being bombarded with this stuff all day during their childhood.

KVOS-TV is one of three stations in my area along with BTV 10 (public access) and KBCB (religious programming). There's also a public access network in Ferndale (just north of Bellingham) but they're never on the air. KVOS used to be big enough that they had their own newscast, but that was before my time. It's been a syndication channel for as long as I can remember. Their studio in the Sehome Hill area shut down about a decade ago and now they're just an antenna on top of a business complex at the east end of town that broadcasts Heroes & Icons. The population in the market is currently in the lower 200k range, so it's fairly small compared to Seattle and Spokane. Welcome back.
KVOS traditionally targeted the Vancouver, BC market. Today it's the METV affiliate for Seattle. Similarly, KCND Pembina, ND targeted Winnipeg, MB, but the day after it shut down it became CKND Winnipeg.
Here's a fun fact about Fort Myers. Around the time that logo aired, that station was 11 years old and was our second channel ever in the region. By that time, Ft Myers only had three stations total. Now we have 13 high and low power stations.
11:09 Fun fact: There was a Chilean news program on Universidad de Chile Televisión (currently known as Chilevisión) that copied that KTVX 6 O'Clock Report intro!
I remember watching KSPS Spokane through Videotron ( later Shaw Cable ) back in '78 ( I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and we watched a lot of American television on cable ), and I don't recall seeing that graphic design.
Found the Nielsen Ratings for Television Markets from 1989. Apparently, the Alaska and Hawaii TV Markets weren’t ranked at the Time. Edit: Here’s Some of the Notable differences compared to the Market Ratings of Today: -The Alaska and Hawaii markets weren’t rated until 1992 -Sarasota-Bradenton was rated as a separate market until 1991 -Roswell and Hagerstown were ranked as separate until around 1992 And -Anniston and Tuscaloosa were rated as separate markets until channels 33 and 40 became ABC Affiliates upon WBRC’s switch to Fox in 1996.
It was 1979. That was a typo carried over from the text I'd copied from another one. my older laptop is slow/runs into problems with editing, hence why I shouldn't use it, so stuff like that was to be expected

Find it funny that Athens County, OH (WOUB example in this video) continues to shuffle markets. Makes sense for it to belong to Parkersburg but it hasn’t for at least 15 years. It’s bouncing between Columbus and Charleston-Huntington.
Lifelong Tampa Bay resident here. WTVT was never an ABC affiliate. It was with CBS from the time it signed on until that New World deal sent it to FOX.
let us be the one turn to.. let us be the one you turn to.. (music) let us be the one! you turn to let us be the one let us be the one (music) let us be the one!!! (music shortly)
lol how did the 1970s Nebraska ETV sign off end up mixed in with the Albuquerque stuff? Is it sad that I can pick out the agencies responsible for most of these, and also immediately recognized the music?
WOR-TV, Channel 9, New York City, is now WWOR-TV, Secaucus, New Jersey. However, there is no Secaucus, New Jersey. The studio building has high weeds and is all fenced in. It is to be demolished and turned into an office building. Their operations were relocated to the Fox flagship/network owned-and-operated station WNYW-TV, Channel 5 in New York City. 👌
Whoa! That's a young Meredith Viera! I bet she's sad that her market dropped a lot over the last 45 years. EDIT: I saw that St. Louis, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Detroit dropped a few places each in market rankings. I wonder why....
It was mainly because two counties in Connecticut had been removed from it, as well as other markets just growing faster. As for the other markets, population loss.
What about the TV stations that share affiliates with multiple networks (i.e. the only station serving the market)? Do they pick and choose which network programs to air?
WTVT in Tampa was NEVER an ABC affiliate. They were CBS up until the 90s when they switched to Fox. In the clip you showed, the station's car has the CBS logo on it. I only know because I live in the Tampa Bay area and my grandmother watched WTVT news.
Great stuff! Only two complaints: (1) Some of them flash by too quickly to be seen. Give 'em all at least five or ten seconds, OK? (2) The "market change" stat is confusing; growing markets should be given a (+) and shrinking markets a (-). (For example, 9:00 Fresno, going from 73rd to 55th, should be +18, not -18.)
Often times station IDs are just too short, so it's hard (but I could've made the stills longer). but I do understand the second complaint. I was wondering how to go about that myself. I was thinking because it was going down in number it would be subtraction. Not everyone's cup of tea though. Thanks for the feedback!

Living in Fort Myers, im surprised that it was a small market in the 70s
This is some bomb ass archival work right here. Thank you for your service
Love 70s motion graphics especially the use of early animation
Here's a fun fact about Fort Myers. Around the time that logo aired, that station was 11 years old and was our second channel ever in the region. By that time, Ft Myers only had three stations total. Now we have 13 high and low power stations.
16:20 Oh look, My Local TV Market.
11:09 Fun fact: There was a Chilean news program on Universidad de Chile Televisión (currently known as Chilevisión) that copied that KTVX 6 O'Clock Report intro!
The ship of cheese is back, at least in the smaller markets.
I remember watching KSPS Spokane through Videotron ( later Shaw Cable ) back in '78 ( I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and we watched a lot of American television on cable ), and I don't recall seeing that graphic design.
It may have been more widely used starting around 1980 or so. Dates in this video can be kinda approximate
i thought videotron was only in quebec and parts of ontario?
Nope, it was in Alberta, and other parts of Western Canada ( Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia ) I think.
Found the Nielsen Ratings for Television Markets from 1989. Apparently, the Alaska and Hawaii TV Markets weren’t ranked at the Time.
Edit: Here’s Some of the Notable differences compared to the Market Ratings of Today:
-The Alaska and Hawaii markets weren’t rated until 1992
-Sarasota-Bradenton was rated as a separate market until 1991
-Roswell and Hagerstown were ranked as separate until around 1992
And
-Anniston and Tuscaloosa were rated as separate markets until channels 33 and 40 became ABC Affiliates upon WBRC’s switch to Fox in 1996.
Where?
@@jabukagala Look up the Broadcasting Cable Yearbook from 1989, the rankings start on Page 655
5:01 LOVE this one!
Me too! Respect to the WDIO weatherman groovin' a funky beat!

12:28 thats my area, however WRGB is now the CBS station in my area
11:20 Noisepuppet has entered the chat
2:08 was probably from 1976-1979, seeing as how the song is Oxygene part IV, which was released in 1976.
It was 1979. That was a typo carried over from the text I'd copied from another one. my older laptop is slow/runs into problems with editing, hence why I shouldn't use it, so stuff like that was to be expected

Had to split this into multiple parts so I apologize about this but, here we go (Corrections are in parentheses):
(2/4)

A version of the marketing campaign at 15:00 made its way down to San Diego (KFMB 8) as late as 1990/91.
0:54 Is this where Oddity Archive got the KLAK-AM jingle?
10:28 Great to see that KTBS logo from the '70s.
Find it funny that Athens County, OH (WOUB example in this video) continues to shuffle markets. Makes sense for it to belong to Parkersburg but it hasn’t for at least 15 years. It’s bouncing between Columbus and Charleston-Huntington.
0:48 Must not have been enough “extra effort” in their news to only be ranked 197…
0:20 and thats the birth of a Global station, although 12 did return as a Fox Affiliate
6:47 kthi is currently an NBC affiliate and is currently called kvly 11.
Was watching these through Roku, and the WQLN ID sound scared my cat😁
11:23 Sounds like when Yoshi touches a fuzzy in Yoshi’s island
Well...KBAK-TV then an ABC affiliate with THEIR version of the star marquee opening used by the network (1975-81). KBAK is now a CBS affiliate.
What a treat! Thank you!
noticed market 39 was missing (is think that's Greenville/Spartanburg, SC/NC) But, hey great work !!
Yeah I saw that too. I wondered why I didn’t see anything from the Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville market.
I think Charleston, SC is missing too.

Lifelong Tampa Bay resident here. WTVT was never an ABC affiliate. It was with CBS from the time it signed on until that New World deal sent it to FOX.
Hey bro no WTVT 13 was actually CBS at the time. Changed to FOX in 1994. WTSP 10 was ABC in Tampa back in the 70’s. Thank you for uploading these.
Yeah and WJKW (reverted back to original WJW) was CBS until 1994-1995.
"News Watch Update with Meredith Vieira"
Wait, What?
I fucking love shit like this, I’d even go as far as stealing the damn scanimate machine from that one guy
Your Back Dude!!
Actually, WJKW TV 8 was affiliated with CBS at the time, just a correction
It'd be easier to name all the TV markets that _didn't_ use a version of Hello Milwaukee at some point.
Probably A LOT of the smaller markets
philly too
1:27 You’re The One That I Want from Grease
12:52 This is Charleston's PBS, WMUL!
let us be the one turn to.. let us be the one you turn to.. (music) let us be the one! you turn to let us be the one let us be the one (music) let us be the one!!! (music shortly)
lol how did the 1970s Nebraska ETV sign off end up mixed in with the Albuquerque stuff?
Is it sad that I can pick out the agencies responsible for most of these, and also immediately recognized the music?
must've been a mistake, I don't know what you're talking about (I'm guessing it says the wrong market)
edit: of COURSE it did
Fort Myers and Las Vegas gained a ton of counties since the 1970s.
9:23 - music is _Mindbender_ by Barry Forgie...quality shit!
Wow Wilkes Barre Scranton Pennsylvania was market 45 in 1975? It dropped a lot since then.
Didn’t you say that Greenville lost some counties to most likely Raleigh Durham
I remember Meredith Viera on the American version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? after Regis Philbin (Rest in peace, Regis).
@@JontyMaster That’s right. Meredith was hosting Millionaire for over a decade. She was also an anchor for The Today Show for several years.
7:08 - a rare WKPT-TV from 1979 that also advertises WKPT’s translator on channel 39 in Greeneville, TN (later WEMT).
BTW, where did you find this ID?
Sounds like The WNBC Saga by TM
There is a little bit of racing there
What about the TV stations that share affiliates with multiple networks (i.e. the only station serving the market)? Do they pick and choose which network programs to air?
That happened. Smaller markets that didn't have three separate network affiliates did that a lot. Toledo, OH had this problem until 1970.
No.? Yes!
14:15 They could have had the callsign "XETV" in Mexico and "KETV" in America (Because San Diego, CA is west of the Mississippi River)
KETV was already in use at the time in Ohama, NE.
WTVT in Tampa was NEVER an ABC affiliate. They were CBS up until the 90s when they switched to Fox. In the clip you showed, the station's car has the CBS logo on it. I only know because I live in the Tampa Bay area and my grandmother watched WTVT news.
thank you for the feedback, however, do understand this video is several years old and there is nothing i can do to edit what is already there
@NoEntertainment I know. Ain't no thing. I usually don't comment on these.
16:20 WTVT was CBS not ABC
now it's fox
Lol in 1975 I could say that Bluefield was larger than Las Vegas
It would only make sense that all you could find for the Roanoke market was from the Lynchburg side...
Great stuff! Only two complaints:
(1) Some of them flash by too quickly to be seen.
Thanks for the feedback!
the pbs affiliates had the most interesting ID's.
