That would be a solid order yes! I placed DS3 first based on Gameplay mechanics being more similar to Elden, but DS1 would be a good choice too. The player would just need to adjust to the simpler gameplay after playing Elden Ring
yeah I strongly stand with OP on this one. I got into the series with DS3 and, while it was the greatest experiences i've had playing a video game, the story was kind of a headache for me. Even after watching Vaati's video on the lore of DS3 bosses I was left with a lot of questions like: "who tf is Priscilla and gwyn and Ornstein???" But after finishing DS1 Ive come to really appreciate the callbacks to the original story when replaying DS3. Realizing that the Soul of Cinder was esentially the character that you played as in the first game, the Chosen Undead, makes the final battle truly special.
going from elden ring to ds1 is so clunky man i would say ds3 into ds1 and if u rly want to keep pl.aying then ds2 maybe bloodborne before ds3 or demon souls ifu have it
I’ve went from Elden ring to DS1 and I think Elden ring is what made these games click for me, since I’ve played ds1 before and did not enjoy it much, but after Elden ring and understanding how these games work, I’m beginning to enjoy it a lot more
Same thing happened to me. I actually bought the Demons' Souls remake and tried it, hated it. Played Elden RIng, loved it and am now back in Demons' Souls and having a blast. Also bought DS3 and have been tackling it here and there.
I started with DS1 in this series, so this may be biased, but one of the things i truly fell in love with in this series is the atmosphere and aesthetic of the games. If anyone is like me in this aspect, I implore you to play DS1 first, because (again, just for me) it was the most significant in meaning
I agree with this. the only atmosphere that feels like the DS1 is Demons Souls, its just so heavy and somber. none of the other games got it like these two, not even the Demons Souls remake.
My older brother enjoyed the "dark souls is hard" memes back when DS1 was new. He eventually found out DS2 was comimg out and had that (on our oldest brother's Xbox 360) as his first game. He swore by it and recommended it relentlessly to me, but I was like 12 at the time and was grinding out high round Zombies runs in Kino der Toten (good times in its own right), so I didn't give it a chance. Then, he left to serve a mission. A few months of his absence made me miss him a lot, so I booted up DS2 and made a gaunt, fish-eyed, pale ginger man that specialized in Dexterity in his honor, and I was hooked. I played through the original DS2 dozens of times without even knowing about ADP. That Christmas when we got an Xbox One, I rebought DS2 as the Scholar edition and enjoyed the DLC. I was there, too, for the launch of DS3, and its immaculate DLCs, fleshing out character after character of every build persuasion, even completing a SL1 run, all thinking about how much my older brother would love them. He came back after 2 years, and did. and it helped us come closer together. But I also kept hearing about Bloodborne, and how good it was. Having an XBone I had no way to access it, so I resolved to work at Subway and save up money for a PS4 Pro, which I did, and that, in turn, led me to rebuying both DS3 and DS2 to play on this superior gaming hardware. While all this was happening, I also rode the hype all the way to Sekiro, which absolutely floored me in every sense. In the back of my mind, however, I always thought about DS1, whose remaster had recently been lambasted by the community for its underwhelming delivery. I saw it as an opportunity to experience the thing that got us (my little brother included, now) into this rabbit hole of games. Later I got my hands on a PS5 just in time for the launch of Elden Ring. I have plats in DS3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, and I just need Sunlight Blade for DS2's plat. I still haven't even given DeSR a shot. It's been a wild ride.
great story dude, im very happy that Dark Souls made you guys closer. i always thought that gaming is a vessel for good memories, just like trips or parties with your close ones, and I see that is the case for you too. And you still have some titles to play so the good times are not over ! thank you for the comment Ingvar
Don't listen to the haters, Ds1 is the best game in the entire series for many older players. Not only because many started with that one (it launched the Souls series into mainstream popularity), but also because it is simply so much more unique than all the other later entries which seemed to try to recapture that lightning in a bottle but could never do it, and instead rode on it's coattails (Ds3 I'm looking at YOU)
This is a great video, and your order makes a lot of sense. The only thing i would personally change is, i'd place Sekiro straight after DS3 and Bloodborne, it may be a controversial choice but i have a few reasons for this, it has imo the most fluid mechanics in the series and somewhat feels more accessible compared to DS1 because of its more linear level design, more polish, frequent idols to rest at, the ability to jump and it acts as a welcome break from the standard souls formula.
Thanks a lot ! I see what you say, and actually thought of that for a moment because of the more fluid gameplay as you said, but then all the remaining games would be very similar visually and gameplay wise and i figured it would feel a bit dull If played one after the other.
The last one I played was Elden Ring, my personal favorite will always be Demon's souls because for me it has the best story and the level design plus the nexus is unmatched. Also great vid!!
Bloodborne was my first. I was off and on with it for awhile until one day I sat down and really gave it my all. Since then I have loved the franchise.
Completed 70% of Bloodborne about 2 years ago and then forgot to play anything since, a month ago I started Bloodborne once again after beating Sekrio almost 3 times, even though Bloodborne was my first fromsoft game, I've fallen in love with Sekrio combat, it's flipping amazing Both have amazing combat, Bloodborne might become my favorite because Bloodborne has that feeling to it that no matter if you play it or not you always think about it 😂
Great video. Also, for Dark Souls 2 PLEASE level up adaptability as soon as possible and search WHY you should do it. It will greatly improve your experience
Thanks a lot Midas ! man, DS2 does such a bad job explaining what Adaptability is. i went back to DS2 a couple days ago and reading the ingame text does not explain what it really does
@@fanohhh The problem for that isn’t about adaptability, it’s about agility. Adaptability is just the level which increases your agility the most. Attunement can also increase your agility, but far less.
The number of small channels with really high quality videos in recent months has really impressed me. I hope this channel grows bigger and gets picked up by the algorithm. While I don't necessarily agree with your order here, since I just always play franchises in chronological order, it's a very interesting take on the order and will probably do a better job at keeping someone interested in the souls series. Good video, keep it up!
Thank you very much AKM! I appreciate the comment. I like your take on the order. I've done it myself with other titles too, with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, after that I went in order from Xenogears on ps1 to Xenoblade DE on switch. some times it's difficult to go back so many years, but that how you truly appreciate how much a developer has evolve with each new entry
I love seeing everyone else's experiences in the comments. I personally went to DS3 immediately after completing Elden Ring, and was shocked to find that it felt easy to me. What I'd previously considered the hardest of the Souls trio became almost trivial, to the point where in my first 2 hours I'd beaten Dancer and given myself a great mid-game setup. I think it has to do with how similar they are. Both are some of the fastest (combat-wise) entries in the series, with a similar set of enemies and semi open-world nature. Granted, DS3 isn't actually open world, but there are points where the paths diverge which makes it feel like going after a different pair of demigods in Elden Ring, and then clearing out the others once your build is setup. I also tried DS1, and due to its slowness it feels just as challenging as before, because I can't take any of the fast combat techniques I learned from Elden Ring and use them.
Ds3 I did before elden and for me it was always ez it has waay to many heals you rlly think a strength build is gonna need a blue flask? Also the levels in ds3 feel so forgetable beside like 4 beside that I just run and swipe shit and run to the bosses but ds3 bosses are really really good
Elden Ring wasn’t my first Souls game, but it was the first one I beat. I’ve had a long love-hate history with the franchise. I had the first Demon Souls on ps3 but I eventually got discouraged and stopped playing it. I got Dark Souls 2/3, Sekiro, and Bloodburne abd had the same results. For some reason Elden Ring clicked, now I’m going to try revisiting the other games and making a real effort with it.
I'm sure you will have a better time with the other titles now! Just don't expect the same amount of features or content from Elden of course, but I'm sure you'll like them better this time now that you are experienced with the mechanics
I think you need to find the one that makes it “click” for you, and that game will probably end up your second favourite if you play all the soulsborne games. It’ll make it click, and then you’ll love it, then try the other games and find a favourite. For me, DS3 made it click. I tried DS1 first and hated it, tried DS2 and hated it, tried DS3 because I knew people loved these games and wanted to know why, and finally it clicked. Went back and tried DS1 and loved it, same with DS2 (the misunderstood middle child of dark souls). Finally got a PS5 and got Bloodborne (which actually became my favourite game of all time, the previous game holding that spot for almost 20 years!), Demon’s, and Sekiro. So glad I managed to platinum them all right before Elden Ring released. For a complete newbie to the series, I’d say the best play order is ER, DS1, DS3, DS2, DeS, BB, and finally sekiro, of course missing the PS exclusives DeS and BB if you don’t have a PlayStation although they’re still VERY highly recommended.
@@meowcat5596 I am playing it right now for the first time and I really don’t get the hate. I am about 15 hours in so I might change my mind. I don’t know that those of us who got in to the series later had the same expectations. I went expecting a disaster and found a good game (so far).
imo people who played Elden Ring as their first Souls-game have butchered the possibility of ever appreciating the older souls games for what they are, all they'll see is the clunk and the older graphics and never be able to truly appreciate how far this series has evolved
That's a mindset everyone needs when going back to older games. It's not what they are not doing now, but what they achieved at the time. But I know many don't like going back for that exact reason you said, a shame really.
My friend did this actually. Elden Ring was the first souls game he played yet went straight to DS1 after. The only difference is that he loved it. Really glad he did that. Now he's gonna love the series even more because he can see where the game started and will have an even greater emotional attachment to the games.
I played DS 1 and 3 back in November last year and January this year for the first time and finished both to then play Elden Ring. Truly does make you appreciate it all more, and give you a broader spectrum of perspective and design flaws/improvements as the games evolved. Makes me appreciate them all for different reasons
I’m playing these games all out of order 😂 I recently got into this genre after years of reluctance and tried my hand at Demon Souls remake. It was awesome. Now I’m playing bloodbourne and I’m enjoying the hell out of it. I didn’t think I would enjoy these types of games but now I understand the hype. I just bought DS 1-3 on sale and ima play those next
I played elden ring, then sekiro, now I’m on blood borne, so far I’ve enjoyed sekiro the most actually. The hardest is elden ring, and I feel like blood borne was the most interesting. All great games
@@xxxs8309 maybe it was cause elden ring was my first souls game so I didn’t realize how hard it was going to be so I was surprised, but I’ve had experience with samurai games before so it was easier for me than for most people
i started with dark souls 3 back in mid 2018, knowing nothing about the series at all, but all i knew was i wanted to play these games (i saw a video where someone played ds3) after a whole year of being enraptured by the game, i got dsr and sekiro, and i played them both, switching back and forth it was a mind-boggling experience to play either one after only ds3 under my belt, but eventually i got the hang of things my journey is only at the midway point, having ds2, demon's, and bloodborne ahead of me, but with how good these games are, it won't be a hard one to finish
For ds2 make sure to get adp to 25 it governs how many I frames you get also don't always use lock on for enemies this advice would've made my life easier for first playthrough
I actually completed Dark Souls 3 specifically so I can prepare for Elden Ring (of course also because I enjoyed the game). When Elden Ring first came out I was low-key terrified when I heard streamers say this was even harder than Dark Souls 3, I ended up way overpreparing; I followed a get op early guide, followed by cleaning 80% of the Limgrave dungeons. Let’s just say, when I got to Margit, the fight lasted less than five minutes and the outcome was not in his favor (I even almost no-damaged him). Little did I know this would be what the rest of the game looked like for me, with most of the bosses requiring me 1-5 tries, with notable exemptions being Rennala, Malenia and Radagon with Elden Beast, all of which except Rennala I still beat way sooner than is considered normal. Basically, the fact that Elden Ring is an open world game, can be exploited extremely hard and while the bosses are harder than previous Souls games, your opportunities for growth are even greater.
I'd argue DS3 is literally the only soulslike that you shouldn't play first out of the trilogy- you should at the very least play DS1 before DS3 purely because of how well the two stories click and the references DS3 makes to DS1 characters and locations- especially the final boss; I dont think i'd have gotten the same goosebumps from hearing its music if I hadn't finished DS1 first. Even if you skip many of the character questlines from ds1 or just miss them, the conclusion to ds3 is only satisfying if you atleast played through most of the journey leading up to it. Unfortunately it doesnt make many references to DS2 aside from a few armors and weapons, and that one tree in firelike shrine, so i'd argue that one is optional. Even if you do use the point that ds3 is most similar in combat to elden ring for those transitioning, pretty much all the games' combat feels different and players just need to adapt, although yes, ds3 is still probably most similar to elden ring than, say, ds1 with its much slower, methodical combat, but honestly i'd still argue the order should then be: Elden ring > Bloodborne (optionally) > DS trilogy starting from ds1. I would just say sekiro can be played whenever since the combat and mechanics are so vastly different. Might as well not even classify it as a soulslike.
I fee like powerstancing was better in dark souls 2. You could mix any weapon (with adequate stat allocation). The greatsword/sword and dagger as an offhand for example was a great! I have a bit of a disdain for how you can only powerstance weapons of the same class because it feels limiting especially after they already introduced the mechanic! Dark souls 2 powerstance was definitely more polished than Elden ring in that perspective. Also, my order after Elden Ring would be: Demon Souls, Dark souls trilogy (in order), bloodborne, then Sekiro. The reason being that you’re playing them in order and that allows you to see how fromsoftware advanced over time. And for the Dark Souls trilogy, definitely play that one in order so that way you can see the lore as it plays through and enjoy it.
I dont know why. But something clicked for me in Ds2Sotfs more than the other fromsoft game. Not my first souls game but it felt real and much more meaningful than the other 2. And thinking back probably because you can choose which area you can go like an first attempt of open world feel. Then Loving the new game Elden Ring which have the same feel as i did back then. And love for it known in the community as elden ring has been called Ds2'2.
So true because for me power stancing needs a tradeoff and for elden ring it doesn't but in ds2 it does it also helps balance weapons that don't have more damage but less weight and requirements
I put maybe a dozen hours in Bloodborne and barely touched DS3, but I think having some experience with Soulsborne gameplay before trying Elden Ring primed me to appreciate the improvements in both mechanics and world building. Which made me engage more with those mechanics, and the "dance" of combat finally clicked. Now I want to go back and play DS3 and Bloodborne for real, and then delve into the rest of the catalog starting with the Demon's Souls remake.
Im sure now youll have a different appreciation for both DS3 and Bloodborne, and youll like them a lot more! the good thing is that after those 3 games you still have a looot more to play
I love Dark Souls 2.... maybe it's because it was my first Souls game... but I think it's awesome...I absolutely love the Bonfire Ascetic mechanic... being able to replay bosses while making them more difficult is interesting
I started with Bloodborne and its strongly influenced how I play all the other Souls Games. To this day I still almost never rock a shield, always have light weight, and never use magic. I'm probably hampering myself significantly but the Bloodborne combat style never leaves you its just that fun!
Eldenring introduced me to this fantastic series of games, my order of playing the others are as follows: Eldenring, Bloodborne, DS1, Demons Souls PS5, DS2 Scholar, DS3, Sekiro :D
@@utisti4976 I prefer a more linear thoughtful experience and better boss encounters in soulsborne than the broken balance of Elden RIng (especially towards the end of the game)
I tried demon souls on PS3, and dark souls on Xbox 360. I really like the games but I couldn't get the gameplay rhythm right but after finally playing Elden Ring(260 hours now, Lv. 115) I can definitely play the other games. I'm waiting till I finish elden ring though.
I completely agree with the list. I too would recommend the games in the same order. Also, for people new to souls, try getting into the lore of these games. They are not as direct as Elden Ring or Sekiro, but the are very deep and masterfully written!
The lore of Elden ring was barely even revealed through the narrative of the entire game. The writing is poor because it is NOT the focus of the game, idk why you people act like it is l.
@@a5hen Idk man. You should see the arguments I get in with people in the Elden Ring reddit. These people seem to think this game is better than Elder Scrolls in that regard. One dude made a request to add fishing into the game and it got like thousands of upvotes lmao. Most of these Souls fans are straight up delusional
My journey DS1: complete noob. Lived behind a shield. Needed a walkthough to complete the game. DS2: intermediate level and things finally clicked. First time I put the shield away and dual wielded 2 greatswords. I LOVE DS2. DS3: enjoyed it but preferred the slower pace of DS1 and DS2. I like DS3 a lot but it doesn't have a special place in my heart. Sekiro: After mastering DS I walked in overconfident and got frustrated. Once I stopped playing it like DS and learned to deflect it became my favorite game of all time. DLC or Sekiro 2 please!! Demon Soul: first soulsborne I played completely blind. Using all my knowledge from previous titles I managed to do it. Played the PS3 version so it was a bit rough around the edges and I enjoyed it in the context of the one that started it all. Elden Ring: the culmination of everything FromSoft has learned since Demon Souls. Truly breathtaking and stands on its own as an incredible achievement. I can't say I love it as much as DS1, DS2 or Sekiro but I can gaze at it and see what an incredible achievement it is. Bloodborne: not yet played and I can't wait to play it soon. Just need to find someone with a spare PS4 lying around haha.
I did the same with demons souls. By far the best way to play it imo. It must’ve been a tough intro to the series back in the day. I enjoyed it so much more with my knowledge and patience from the other games. Also bloodbornes the best
I'm 10 hours into Elden Ring and I haven't even reached Godrick yet lol. I did eventually get past Margitt but now I'm currently stuck on the knight with the huge kite shield that waits in the really dark room. However I have beaten the watchdog in the catacombs and the werewolf guy wielding a sword in the caves. I'm really enjoying myself despite the difficulty, there really is something magical about these games and I'll defo have to check out the others afterwards!
You have a long path ahead of you let me tell you ! but youll enjoy every minute of it, im sure of that. Hope you enjoy all the other ones once you finish Elden Ring too :)
@@Communistgun The journey was indeed incredible. I've put in close to 400 hours now, got the platinum and all the endings. My favourite game of all time. Seeing your reply was great actually because I got to read my old comment to remind myself of how I found the game when I started out 😂 . Currently taking a break from Elden Ring until the DLC, while I'm enjoying the other fromsoft masterpieces. I'd currently rank them as: 1) Elden Ring 2) Bloodborne 3) Sekiro 4) Dark Souls 3 5) Demon's Souls Remake Still yet to finish Dark Souls, then I'll have the best for last 😉
@@captain_penguin3998 I'm glad you've loved the game so much and congrats for getting platinum and getting all the endings! I just got the game in February and just beat the fire giant and it's already my favorite game, I love this game so much it makes me want to improve my skills so I can attempt the other souls games.
@@Communistgun Thank you! Well done on the Fire Giant, he can be a really tough encounter. Definitely give the other games a go, they are just as incredible as Elden Ring.
I went from elden ring to sekiro, to bloodborne, to demons souls. I’m still finishing demons souls but I’m going to play ds 1 then ds2 then ds3 after I get all achievements
As a Swede I've eaten dinner and breakfast at friends houses significantly more than I've skipped to stay in the friends room. But every time that did occur it was because our parents kept in touch and my parents wanted me to join them for breakfast or dinner or whatever. I probably even experienced this more than most because my friends would usually eat at 5-6PM while my family ate at around 7PM or later, so I would skip their dinner so I could eat at home an hour later. But i can tell you, it was great sitting in your friends room all alone playing Xbox without having to pass the controller during those 15 minutes
Hey guys, i really really want to play another souls game because i loved elden ring to bits, but i kind of didnt like how passive you had to play for some bosses, making have little rhythm. What one should i play next for that more enagaging gameplay? (I have done all bosses solo in elden ring with a heavy claymore only with no WAs, before you ask)
Either Dark Souls 3 or Sekiro. Dark Souls 3 has basically the same combat system as Elden Ring but you can play much more aggressive than in Elden Ring. Most bosses have clear openings and don't have 30 second combos. If you want something even more aggressive you should play Sekiro. I personally didn't enjoy the bosses as much as DS3 but the combat is amazing. Even when you're deflecting it feels like you're playing aggressive.
@@skelettman Thanks! What about Bloodborne? I am currently stuck between ds3 and bloodborne atm, from what i heard about Sekiro i might want some more experience before i tackle it.
@@rudalph529 I haven't played Bloodborne since I don't own a PS4/PS5 but it has the same Dark Souls style combat but is a little faster. Also doesn't have any shields. I'd say go for DS3 if you liked the combat in Elden Ring and want a little more experience while also fighting some amazing bosses. Go for Bloodborne if you want something similar but still different and like the lovecraftian style.
Bloodborne is not passive at all. It's built around the facts that there are no shields, you have a quickstep dodge, you regain health by attacking in a short window, and your gun is how you parry. It really rewards aggressive gameplay.
Sekiro was what got my into these type of games, Bloodborne being my second right after (DLC included). Currently on my Elden Ring run for the first time and its been kicking my ass lol, been a great experience so far despite the challenge. Sekiro is the most refined, Bloodborne the most interesting/atmospheric, and Elden Ring the grandest and most expansive. In terms of difficulty, Elden Ring is at the top, Bloodborne is second, with Sekiro being third (tho the first play through is absolutely brutal due to the learning curve). It really depends on what you’ll like the most really, I picked Sekiro solely cuz it felt like something I would vibe with and thankfully it stuck and I haven’t turned back since.
I'm being tortured in Dark Souls 3 after finishing second run of Elden Ring. I thought it's just like playing Elden Ring without ashes, maps, summons and Torrent, I miss Torrent so much! And it turned out to be another level of difficulty and satisfaction. Guess I'm getting masochistic.
After Elden Ring DS3 often feels like going from legacy dungeon to legacy dungeon. There are no ashes of war but there are there weapon arts but only one for every weapon. And there quite a few NPC summons especially if you do their quests. What I really miss is power stancing. That is only in DS2 sadly. Also weapon infusion and upgrading is more complicated but still not as complicated as in DS1 LOL.
I haven’t beaten Elden Ring, but it was truly my first time getting into the DarksBourne Series. And it’s probably the games that im going to be playing with for a while since im getting a second job and going to school and starting a family. I might go with BloodBourne next since I have a PS4.
@@fanohhh yeah man. I’m working on it. Found a job that’s 15, 16 minutes away compared to the one hour drive back and forth with an old job of mines. It’s a difference maker for sure.
Played most of the series, but Sekiro still lingers out there as something I need to play sometime. I'm nervous because its more parry focused combat, but still interested. Meanwhile, I heavily recommend DarkSouls 3 to new Souls fans. Its easily my favorite among the 3 core souls games. Between the refined combat, places, creatures, and surprises, its just a really fantastic entry. I even just love the novelty of the player moniker, "Ashen one". Now I didn't buy Demon's souls until just recently, and... yeah, its a bit rough, but not without its perks. I've gotta get more into that when I'm more 'done' with Elden Ring.
Sekiro was the game i had the most trouble getting into too. I didn't really got a feel for the parry system until the third time I started all over again. I like it yes, but not more than the core Souls games, still worth a full playthrough at least once ! Are you playing the original Demons Souls or the Remake? Its not as fluid as DS3 or ER, but I think the Remake plays good in comparison. But The original is difficult to go back for sure
I've tried to play Sekiro a few times. I can tell it's a well designed game but it's not just a great game for me specifically. My wife on the other hand can't play the core souls games or Bloodborne to save her life but Sekiro combat clicks with her and she loves that game so 🤷
@@StrappingYoungLadam its an action game a bit like metal gear rising , difference is that sekiro forces you to adapt to the games fast pace , yes its kind of hard to get into it but once you learn it and get used to it , it becomes so much more fun , kind has the effect as bloodborne when it first came out
I would say to play the original Demons Souls next if you have a PC that can emulate it. I got a friend to play Elden Ring and then got him to play demons souls next and he's enjoying it. It's a great place to start to get used to the old style and see the evolution of the games
Elden ring was my first and now many other games seem kinda lame. I'm going to follow your recommendation. I already played Dark Souls 3 and it was great. You were right it was pretty similar to Elden Ring. Thank you and happy new year
Great video man. I have not finished Elden Ring yet but have already been think about what to play next. This video helped a lot, thank you. I've been torn between starting with DS3 and the original Dark Souls.
thanks Shaun ! i think after Elden DS3 is the best option because of gameplay mechanics, but ive seen many people here saying that they played DS1 after ER with no issues, so you can go with either :) im sure youll have a great time with both
They're all great games, but I'd savour either Bloodbourne or Dark Souls Remaster for a climactic ending to your exploration Bloodbourne has some of the best atmosphere and gameplay in the series and Dark Souls can't be beaten on world design
Elden Ring was my first Souls Game, loved it to death. 550~ Hours and got the 1000 G on my Xbox. Then I played DS1 300~ Hours and got the 1000 G. Currently finishing up DS2 in which I only need to reach Drangleic Castle to get the 1000 G. Meanwhile I'm on my fourth playthrough in Sekiro for the Shura Ending, currently fighting Isshin, after that I got the 1000 G for Sekiro aswell. DS3 is already installed on my console, waiting for me. So yeah, ever since Elden Ring I have fallen in love with these games.
After Elden Ring, the thought process shouldn't be "which one is most similar" but rather "how did we get here?" DS1 should absolutely be the starting point. Unless you really want to see the beginning. In that case, Demons Souls, if you play the original. If you play the remake, I'd say throw that in after the DS trilogy. Bloodborne should also be played sometime after the DS trilogy. The common denominator here is that playing the trilogy is really what the core of these FromSoft games are.
If you beat Elden Ring as a mage and want to ease into melee combat I'd recommend Demon's Souls. It has by far the easiest bosses and the skill required isn't as high as for the other FS games.
To anyone reading this: Be a new player or an old player, try Elden Ring or Dark Souls 3 with the HUD turned to off*. It's completely doable, and make for refreshment of the games.
i originally started with DS1 rage quit at sen's funhouse, played DS3 15 times, (now on my 41st newgame cycle) i then went back, beat DS1 twice then got DS2 beat it 4 times, then got sekiro (im stuck on the flaming bull) and then played a bit of bloodborne on a friend's playstation
I would recommend demon's souls, then Dark souls remastered, and Dark souls 2, then bloodborne, Dark souls 3, then sekiro... That's probably going to be the most comfortable mechanically as well. Starting over at demon souls would force a hard reset for your learned mechanics, and you would basically start from scratch and learn quickly.
Interesting video! As it happens i tried to play Demons Souls straight after ER but could not get into it after many tries. Then i downloaded DS3 and got into it right away. Then i saw your video. So have a Like for that!
editing tip: when loud gameplay audio plays and you talk over it, even if it's understandable what you're saying, you're harder to listen to. The viewers get focused on sound effects and forget what you just said. I suffer from this same problem when making videos since my mic is bad lol
Thanks for the tip Glorg! I tried to balance the audio a bit but I wasn't really sure on how to do it properly, this is my first video ever. I think I notice it more now when I rewatch the video, so I should have a better idea on what to do for the next one, hopefully

@@glorgozorg oh man, it took some time yeah, I am using Davinci resolve to edit since it's free. And i was watching videos on how to edit the video while I was working on it, plus all the time recording the clips and the voice over, i think it was like 25+ hours, and like 2 or 3 weeks since I started until I finished. I work full time so it takes me a lot of time to make progress. I am doing the second one and just finished recording the clips, so I think by the end of the month I may finish it
I haven't played Bloodborne and Demon's Souls yet, but for the other games the order is in this video is spot on. But there is jumping in ds1 and ds2 as well, even thought it's clunky and arkward. So that's not a new feature they put into DS3 because of Sekiro. Btw, I am not sure I would recommend Sekiro as a game to play after elden ring since the game is so different from elden ring and all the other games. It's a great game in it's right but it limits player freedom in a lot of ways in exchange for faster combat, more direct story telling and easier to understand game systems. It's like fromsoft's version of the ninja gaiden games rather than their usual souls-style games.
Sekiro is a whole different experience, that's for sure ! i think its a good playthrough after ER but you'll have to go with a completely different mindset
After elden, I played DS1 and enjoyed it a lot! It was easier and harder than Elden Ring at times. I think I’m going to skip DS2 because I’ve heard it’s frustratingly hard. Going straight to DS3, thanks for the cool video!
I thought the same thing about DS2 but it actually slaps hard … I recommend going with a quality build and getting the great Lance, it destroys everything even without upgrading… you also will have flexibility stat wise to use the great club and the rapier… These weapons absolutely shredded the game for me, and don’t forget to level up adaptability to at least 25, it will make your dodging really good
I feel like I'm the only one who didn't care for DS3 mechanically whatsoever. I've finished it a couple times but personally it feels close to last in my own list. I rank DS2 much much higher, combat is definitely worse in places but personally the entire world hit me tremendously. I only have yet to beat Sekiro solely just from falling off partway after launch due to a crippling Warframe addiction and never returned.
I fell off Sekiro when it came out due to a multiplayer game too 😂 it was Quake at the time. But then i played through it and it was very good ! you need to finish it, the second half of the game is great too
Bought all the games besides D2, and played 15% of each. Decided for my order of D3, Demon souls for graphics…back n forth D1 bloodbourne and then sekiro finale
DS1 - DS3 - Bloodborne - Sekiro. DS1 mostly for the story and DS3 next so you can enjoy the continuation of that story. DS3/BB/Sekiro in a sequence is good gameplay wise because the combined gameplay of these 3 are the wellspring that ER gameplay drew from. The pace, the increasing movesets of enemies, the jumping, the items and so forth. DS2 and DeS are like the sort of experimental ones that differ a bit from the others, so just play them last.
I'd say the order is DS3 cuz how similar it is to ER -> DS1 so you get a feel how it all started and so you can look back and see the bits DS3 called back on -> Bloodborne cuz its so dam good a the most similar to DS1 of the games left -> Demon Souls remastered ideally because its such a good polished remaster and the last two you can play if you really want to see quite different takes on the 'souls' formula, ideally DS2 then Sekiro and back to ER for another playthrough :P
Loved Elden Ring, been playing Bloodborne for the past month and I’m having a blast. I think I’m going to do DS1 next, then DS3. After that, maybe Sekiro and save Demon’s Souls for last. Not going to bother with DS2. Too many other games to play 😅
At first I thought I simply did not had the patience and constitution for Soulsborne games, but my mistake in making that conclusion was basing that on the fact that DS2 was my first game After beating Elden Ring I am filled with confidence to try out the other games
I wanted to play the whole souls series before elden to prepare myself because I never got into them. Manged to finish only ds1 because I didn't estimate how enjoyable the game was ( finished it like 3 times ) But the moment I got into elden I realised I should forget everything I learned in Ds1. First time in ds1 I've played an absolute poise tank, wielding the mighty Zweihander. The second playtrought I played a samurai and the last one a pyro. When I switched to samurai I tought I was faster than light ( and I was compared to my tanky boi xD ) When I started elden I felt that my reaction times where in slow motions while the enemies where snorting coke in between fucking my ass up. I got used to it and managed to finish elden after about a month ( still want to do another playthrough because I beat most bosses with the help of the mimic, nothing wrong with that, but I never felt accomplished for some reason ) Switching to ds3 from elden was a piece of cake, finished ds3 in about a week and ravaged everything solo. NK was my wall, he made me get gud, after him yeah Friede Gael Midir where hard but beatable, NK felt like an overpowered anime villan at the start. Now I am playing ds2 and I was honestly pretty disappointed, leveling adp helped but still, it feels off. Ds1 and Ds3 while different still feel like souls games, ds2 idk. I killed the last boss of the base game and I went online because I thought I missed the actual last boss or something because everything was so easy. I died more times trying to get to the bosses because of the weird enemy placements. I hate how delayed everything is in the game, after every input it feels like there is a pause for some reason. I heard the dlc are good so I hope they redeem the game.
I think you can try Demons Souls first if thats the case, since it is more like DS1s gameplay. then you can give all your attention to DS2 and play it for what it is. I know what you mean, but i think it deserves a playthrough at least once !
@@fanohhh I finished Ds2 since I wrote that comment, the dlcs were good compared to the game, like really good. Sir Allone is in my top 5 bosses if I ignore the runback. I wish I could get a PS5 but they are like unicorns in Eastern Europe. Atm I am looking for a cheap ps4 to justify buying it only to play Blooborne.
Story wise I feel like elden ring should be played after DS1 or at the end of the series. Maybe it’s just my interpretation but the opening cutscene of elden ring does vaguely set up the concept that this is where “the fertive Pygmy ended up” seemingly giving it a tie into the “timeline” of DS
i remember playing ds1 when it came out, but didn't get it. it also didn't help playing it on pc with keyboard and mouse which was an absolute nightmare to control. years later, during the pandemic, i bought the trilogy on steam and started with ds3 thinking it was the most user friendly and most refined, mechanic wise. and i was right, i found it to be the esiest one and played 2 and 1 afterwards. after that was sekiro and then i bought a ps4 just for bloodborne which is my personal fav and the only one i played up to ng+3. elden ring didn't really hit the mark for me, i still can't figure out what exactly it is i dislike about it, but it just feels like a chore to play. the atmosphere is too jolly and overall feels boring. i'll probably replay it after all the patches and dlcs are out.
I think that you should start the series by release order, for example: if you play Dark Souls 3 first, DS1 feels really dated in comparison and hard to get used to.
Personally, I'd say Sekiro, Dark Souls, Dark Souls III, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls II (not sure where Bloodborne fits since I unfortunately don't have a PS4/PS5 just yet). I think Sekiro after is a good pallette-cleanser, then Dark Souls, then to Dark Souls III. That way, you get the improvements going from Dark Souls to Dark Souls III, and you don't have to deal with the jank going backwards as much, since Sekiro is so different, it'll feel like new again.
I.. am what many of you would call a loony. I started, years ago with dark souls 3, then 2, followed by Sekiro, then Bloodborne. Finally playing and finishing DSR with about 6~ months to spare before ER came out. Remember I played these games over years of my life, with long breaks between, growth alongside perspective change on everything in life leaves you with the best experience, pace yourself my fellow warriors, sages, and ronin alike. Its silly to make a game a part of life while you play it, but it certainly enhances that experience. [I can explain how I think I had a good experience playing thru specifically DS series backwwards that will atleast leave anyone unsettled by the opinion understanding. because I never really meant to but it just kinda happened that way. It only boils down to the story being so interpretive and told, that seeing the events, and as mentioned story call backs that would have went over head without playing ds1 kinda had a reverse reveal when I eventually got to the end of my road and seeing this mythical land of Lodran I heard only whispers of. It was a good experience and I hope y’all get me. So anyway, my favs are for STORY: BB>Sekiro>DS1>DS2>DS3>ER GAMEPLAY: Sekiro>BB>DS2?????[yesdontclownme]>DS1>DS3 {AND REMEMBER THAT NONE OF THESE GAMES ARE BAD, I LOVE THEM EQUAL, BUT WHAT MAKES MY FAVORITE AND PREFERENCE COMES DOWN TO AESTHETIC: DS2[my fav soulsborne]>BB>DS1>Sekiro>DS3
I would say play Ds2 before Ds1 so you won't be biased on the experience of the first game that is considered to be the best in world design in the franchise
I still have not played Elden ring. I played dark souls remastered and I just picked up dark souls 2 SOFS and dark souls III on the cheap ($10 and $20 ish with all dlc each). After I finish those (I am playing 2 right now) I plan on either Elden Ring or Sekiro, depends which is cheaper when I get to them. It might take me a year or more to finish 2 and 3, seeing as I have 4 kids and a dog lol. If I ever get a PlayStation I would love to play blood Borne and Demon souls remake at some point.
He says "a unique area" in Bloodborne and shows a swamp lol which appears in every other FromSoft title. My first game was DS1, then DS3, then Elden Ring.

I’d say DS1 before DS3 just because a lot of the story elements and some callbacks are only significant if you played the first. But otherwise, solid!
Same here. DS2 does get a couple references, but the most noticeable one is in the dlc.

Ds2 is pretty heavy and somber, but yeah it's like more gray tones while Ds1 is more black tones
@@fanohhh I think it's because of the hardware limitations tbh

@@fanohhh Actually, you're right, that does make a lot of sense! Your recommendation will definitely keep it fresher for the player.
I'd just say after elden ds3 then whatever from there tbh
The last one I played was Elden Ring, my personal favorite will always be Demon's souls because for me it has the best story and the level design plus the nexus is unmatched. Also great vid!!
Bloodborne was my first. I was off and on with it for awhile until one day I sat down and really gave it my all. Since then I have loved the franchise.
Happened the same to me with DS1, wasn't sure at the beginning and then it clicked after many hours of trying. Haven't stopped since 😂
Completed 70% of Bloodborne about 2 years ago and then forgot to play anything since, a month ago I started Bloodborne once again after beating Sekrio almost 3 times, even though Bloodborne was my first fromsoft game, I've fallen in love with Sekrio combat, it's flipping amazing
Both have amazing combat, Bloodborne might become my favorite because Bloodborne has that feeling to it that no matter if you play it or not you always think about it 😂
Great video.

Spam Vibes
DS2 isn't misunderstood lmao, it's straight up just a bad game
@@meowcat5596 I am playing it right now for the first time and I really don’t get the hate. I am about 15 hours in so I might change my mind. I don’t know that those of us who got in to the series later had the same expectations. I went expecting a disaster and found a good game (so far).
Yo I had no clue you had that many subs. Based off of the video I just assumed you were at least 50k great job man.
Thank you very much Lil Smack 33 ! I really appreciate that :)
imo people who played Elden Ring as their first Souls-game have butchered the possibility of ever appreciating the older souls games for what they are, all they'll see is the clunk and the older graphics and never be able to truly appreciate how far this series has evolved
smh sounds like you don’t like the older games either
That's a mindset everyone needs when going back to older games. It's not what they are not doing now, but what they achieved at the time. But I know many don't like going back for that exact reason you said, a shame really.
My friend did this actually. Elden Ring was the first souls game he played yet went straight to DS1 after. The only difference is that he loved it. Really glad he did that. Now he's gonna love the series even more because he can see where the game started and will have an even greater emotional attachment to the games.
Some people can't do it your absolutely right but nit everyone is that way. True old school gamers know how it is and appreciate all games
I just bought DS 1-3 on sale and ima play those next

after a whole year of being enraptured by the game, i got dsr and sekiro, and i played them both, switching back and forth
it was a mind-boggling experience to play either one after only ds3 under my belt, but eventually i got the hang of things
my journey is only at the midway point, having ds2, demon's, and bloodborne ahead of me, but with how good these games are, it won't be a hard one to finish
For ds2 make sure to get adp to 25 it governs how many I frames you get also don't always use lock on for enemies this advice would've made my life easier for first playthrough
ds3 was my first, never finished, played and finished elden ring, then went back and finished ds3 before my friend who got me into it
I played Elden Ring and then played DS3 and now I’m playing DS1. Enjoying these games
Elden ring is one of the easiest but best ones
Imo elden rings has much better movesets for powerstances tho, ds2s all kinda felt the same.
So true because for me power stancing needs a tradeoff and for elden ring it doesn't but in ds2 it does it also helps balance weapons that don't have more damage but less weight and requirements
@@arcashark389 the moveset are more fleshed out but in elden it's to op
Fleshed out in elden not ds2*
DS3 has the best bosses
I would heavily recommend DS3;
It’s really fun and rewarding.
Agree 100%
DS3 is extremely fun but extremely linear. Plus, it doesn't have powerstancing. :/
Even though I'm a souls veteran and have played every game, this is still an interesting video. You got my sub.
Thank you Wiznu !
I finished Elden ring as my first souls game, loved it and now I am getting dark souls 3 for my birthday. I’m very excited.
Hope you like it Ben !
@@fanohhh His name is Ted bro
@@Jeromejohnson678 well it says Ben in his channel name 😂
I completely agree with the list. I too would recommend the games in the same order.
Also, for people new to souls, try getting into the lore of these games. They are not as direct as Elden Ring or Sekiro, but the are very deep and masterfully written!
I'd say Souls lore is a little bit more direct than Elden Ring. To me Elden Ring felt the most ambiguous of all
@@StrappingYoungLadam wow that's the first time I have heard pf that, but that's great!
The lore of Elden ring was barely even revealed through the narrative of the entire game.
The writing is poor because it is NOT the focus of the game, idk why you people act like it is l.
@@Digger-Nick Soulslike games never had their first focus on storytelling, what you talking about?
@@a5hen Idk man. You should see the arguments I get in with people in the Elden Ring reddit.
These people seem to think this game is better than Elder Scrolls in that regard. One dude made a request to add fishing into the game and it got like thousands of upvotes lmao.
Most of these Souls fans are straight up delusional
I actually recommend Dark Souls 3 as the last DS game you play. You won't enjoy the callbacks if you play 3 first
Elden Ring was my first and I loved it so much that I'm afraid going back to the earlier games that aren't open world will be hard for me.
My journey
DS1: complete noob.
Also bloodbornes the best
you played in the exact order i did, except for Bloodborne which i played after 3. you need to play it !
I hope you have had a good journey, tarnished
@@Communistgun The journey was indeed incredible. I've put in close to 400 hours now, got the platinum and all the endings. My favourite game of all time. Seeing your reply was great actually because I got to read my old comment to remind myself of how I found the game when I started out 😂 . Currently taking a break from Elden Ring until the DLC, while I'm enjoying the other fromsoft masterpieces.
I'd currently rank them as:
1) Elden Ring
2) Bloodborne
3) Sekiro
4) Dark Souls 3
5) Demon's Souls Remake
Still yet to finish Dark Souls, then I'll have the best for last 😉
@@captain_penguin3998 I'm glad you've loved the game so much and congrats for getting platinum and getting all the endings!
"Beautifully Horrific" (Bloodbourne) - This right there. Amazing vid fam.
@@skelettman Yeah i adore lovecraftian styles, so Bloodborne seems like it is for me, i have jeard nothing but praise for it.
There's no rush brother, take your time with the game, it's worth it. Also good luck on the new job and the family dude ! Hope everything goes well
@@fanohhh yeah man.
My wife on the other hand can't play the core souls games or Bloodborne to save her life but Sekiro combat clicks with her and she loves that game so 🤷
Tbh sekiro is the best game out of the lot , the real probleme is that people treat it as a souls game , when it clearly isn't
@@silentparrot8510 Not necessarily. It has one specific play style which not everyone is going to be into.
I've been torn between starting with DS3 and the original Dark Souls.
thanks Shaun ! i think after Elden DS3 is the best option because of gameplay mechanics, but ive seen many people here saying that they played DS1 after ER with no issues, so you can go with either :) im sure youll have a great time with both
Thanks for the tip, bro. I was gonna play the original Dark Souls next, but now I'll get DS3 first instead.
Im sure you'll like it Moolers !
Play dark souls 1 next then u will like all the references and throwbacks in dark souls 3, skip 2 u ain't missing much tho I do love mujula
I went Sekiro, Demons souls remake, Elden Ring, Bloodborne and now I’m working on Dark Souls 3. After I might take on Dark Souls 1.
They're all great games, but I'd savour either Bloodbourne or Dark Souls Remaster for a climactic ending to your exploration
Bloodbourne has some of the best atmosphere and gameplay in the series and Dark Souls can't be beaten on world design
So yeah, ever since Elden Ring I have fallen in love with these games.
great vid!! Nice editing also, +1 sub
Thank you very much MarK !
50th sub, I though this was an established channel, this video kicks ass
Thank you very much Knight Light ! I really appreciate the comment. And thank you for being my first subscriber milestone on RUclips :)
To anyone reading this:
Be a new player or an old player, try Elden Ring or Dark Souls 3 with the HUD turned to off*.
It's completely doable, and make for refreshment of the games.
Elden Ring was my first and I'm currently balls deep in Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.
i originally started with DS1 rage quit at sen's funhouse, played DS3 15 times, (now on my 41st newgame cycle) i then went back, beat DS1 twice then got DS2 beat it 4 times, then got sekiro (im stuck on the flaming bull) and then played a bit of bloodborne on a friend's playstation
@@fanohhh i see we are kind of on the same level right now, and facing the same issues. I'll subscribe so i can comment on your videos again in the future and maybe learn something from you! This is a masterpiece considering it's your first video btw

@@fanohhh i would say i have a shitpost problem. My pc is slow and i end up posting barely edited videos. One last question, how long did it take you to edit this? it's really well done
I am doing the second one and just finished recording the clips, so I think by the end of the month I may finish it
I'd recommend Sekiro either as last or as first after ER. It's very different and will mess with you if you try to play it between other Souls games
Demon's Souls Remake is literally the best looking Souls game out there.
Going straight to DS3, thanks for the cool video!
ds2 is frustraingly bad game
I thought the same thing about DS2 but it actually slaps hard … I recommend going with a quality build and getting the great Lance, it destroys everything even without upgrading… you also will have flexibility stat wise to use the great club and the rapier… These weapons absolutely shredded the game for me, and don’t forget to level up adaptability to at least 25, it will make your dodging really good
I've played and completed DS1 and DS2, jumping into Elden Ring now. From there I will probably play DS3 then Bloodborne and lastly Sekiro
I played DS1 after Elden Ring and had the most amazing experience ever.
4:00 quickstep & it's the progenitor to the DS3 quickstep WA.
I've desperately been looking at getting into another souls game after Elden Ring. The community consensus is similar to your list.
But then i played through it and it was very good ! you need to finish it, the second half of the game is great too
Play it in whatever order you want, but make sure you play DS1 before DS3.
elden ring actually was my first souls game then I instantly played through ds3 and bloodborne. this series is amazing im on sekiro now
Bought all the games besides D2, and played 15% of each.
DS2 and DeS are like the sort of experimental ones that differ a bit from the others, so just play them last.
for some reason DS1's level design is super confusing to me.
At first I thought I simply did not had the patience and constitution for Soulsborne games, but my mistake in making that conclusion was basing that on the fact that DS2 was my first game
After beating Elden Ring I am filled with confidence to try out the other games
Please do ! if you beat ER you can beat any other of these games, and im sure youll have a great time with them
Just recently got dark souls remastered on switch after finishing elden ring
Went from ER to DS1. Hated it, switched to DS3, loved it. Not sure if I want to return to DS1
When I switched to samurai I tought I was faster than light ( and I was compared to my tanky boi xD )
When I started elden I felt that my reaction times where in slow motions while the enemies where snorting coke in between fucking my ass up. I got used to it and managed to finish elden after about a month ( still want to do another playthrough because I beat most bosses with the help of the mimic, nothing wrong with that, but I never felt accomplished for some reason )
Switching to ds3 from elden was a piece of cake, finished ds3 in about a week and ravaged everything solo.
To prepare yourself? For what? Cringe
Steam summer sale made a strong argument that Sekiro was the best starter post Elden Ring.
Story wise I feel like elden ring should be played after DS1 or at the end of the series. Maybe it’s just my interpretation but the opening cutscene of elden ring does vaguely set up the concept that this is where “the fertive Pygmy ended up” seemingly giving it a tie into the “timeline” of DS
after elden ring i went
sekiro first playtrhu
bloodborne second playthru
current dark souls 1 second playthru
and dark souls 3 after
Getting knocked off your horse by the catapult gave me a laugh, thanks for that 😂. Happened to me so many times.
it happens more times than we would like to think 😂
Played through the souls series myself.
I completely agree with this order.
Sekiro was my first and after that elden ring was like piece of cake :)
i remember playing ds1 when it came out, but didn't get it. it also didn't help playing it on pc with keyboard and mouse which was an absolute nightmare to control. years later, during the pandemic, i bought the trilogy on steam and started with ds3 thinking it was the most user friendly and most refined, mechanic wise. and i was right, i found it to be the esiest one and played 2 and 1 afterwards. after that was sekiro and then i bought a ps4 just for bloodborne which is my personal fav and the only one i played up to ng+3. elden ring didn't really hit the mark for me, i still can't figure out what exactly it is i dislike about it, but it just feels like a chore to play. the atmosphere is too jolly and overall feels boring. i'll probably replay it after all the patches and dlcs are out.
I think that you should start the series by release order, for example: if you play Dark Souls 3 first, DS1 feels really dated in comparison and hard to get used to.
I've played all those other souls games, and there's no way I could justify suggesting someone play them over Elden Ring, or after.
Me: grabs my spells
Also me: 1 shots gwynn
I.. am what many of you would call a loony. So anyway, my favs are for STORY: BB>Sekiro>DS1>DS2>DS3>ER
GAMEPLAY: Sekiro>BB>DS2?????[yesdontclownme]>DS1>DS3 {AND REMEMBER THAT NONE OF THESE GAMES ARE BAD, I LOVE THEM EQUAL, BUT WHAT MAKES MY FAVORITE AND PREFERENCE COMES DOWN TO AESTHETIC: DS2[my fav soulsborne]>BB>DS1>Sekiro>DS3
I forgot to take off my caps locks in that second half
I would say play Ds2 before Ds1 so you won't be biased on the experience of the first game that is considered to be the best in world design in the franchise
Agree with list nice vid
Thanks! Great video & advice
