Hey Finn, can you do something like this about ice nine kills
MIW are one of the few bands in modern metalcore besides ice nine kills and a few others where there’s a pretty even split in their audience between men and women. If you’re cynical you could argue “oH gIrLs oNlY lIkE tHeM cUs ChRiS iS hOt” but I think it’s because
1. They’re amazing at marketing
2. Each album is arguably better than the last
3. The male side of their fanbase is super nice and isn’t filled with neck beards who hate women
4. Goths in general are ironically very sweet and welcoming so it’s easy for women to get into that kind of music without feeling unwelcome like in many prog and djent circles
5. The members of the band seem like genuine, thoughtful people. There’s no “trapt guy” in MIW
6. They’re not scared to bring modern production aesthetics into their music, so their new stuff never sounds dated on arrival like a lot of bands who just sound like worse versions of artists from 10-15 years ago
Absolutely agreed! I actually just did a vocal cover of CYBERHEX btw! I'd love to see what you think in the RUclips Comments!
ruclips.net/video/TZ8ohw3be4Q/видео.html
Agree on all of these except the second point, you don't get better than Creatures
Great points!
Agree with this 100%. Chris has amazing stage presence and vocal versatility to match.
I'm still gonna go with "girls like them cuz Chris is hot and has feminine aspects (like makeup, outfits, etc.)
Clean vocals and savage screams, lots of energy, great aesthetics, thoughtful interviews - so much to love about them!
They're aggressively average.
@@andrewbrock3675 exactly
I don't hear anything new or exciting from them
@@andrewbrock3675 cool thing about life eh? We all got our opinions
@@wildwulf7065 Yeah man, and some opinions are wrong. MIW is a very, very average band dude. They do nothing at all unique or different. And they do nothing better than any of the heavy hitters in whatever genre they try to emulate. The band doesn't have a single original thought when it comes to music.
I think Creatures is still their best album, but every single one of them is amazing. Great band with great songs and great stage presence
I was going to say the same!! I still listen to that album all the time.
I honestly haven't listened to them since the first ep. I heard a bit of creatures and wasn't digging it
@@cokinst2266 the ep and creatures are really similar though
I started with creatures, but Tbh I like everything that came after more. I think their definitely at their best with the brutal gothic industiral-core sound.
Cannot agree more 👌
Thoughts & Prayers is hands down my favorite song by MIW! It's freaking amazing!
As an old fan of MIW, this is a totally fair and accurate assessment of their career. Great video! 10/10.
Agreed. My favorite band since the first time I saw the Abigail video.
@@JackerySnaxxx Same. Almost 12 years now of non-stop jamming their stuff.
MIW's been my favorite band since discovering their first EP back in the MySpace days - it's been an honor to watch them grow and improve their sounds over the years. Props to them, great review too Finn!
I’ve seen them live a few times both at theaters and warped tour and they always put on a damn good show. I don’t really ever listen to them anymore but I’d totally catch them if they came to town
I dont listen to a ton of music anymore but always make it a point to catch them live whenever theyre in town. Definitely my favorite band to see live. They always put on a good show.
They opened for Slipknot and it was the first time I saw them live. They were pretty damn good.
I remember seeing them on a side stage at warped right after creatures came out, they were fantastic. About to go see them for the 2nd time on the trilogy of terror tour
Motionless in White has never been my favorite band or anything but I've never heard anything from them that I didn't like. I feel like it's hard to say they're bad, cuz they just always sound good for what they're doing.
They can't make a "bad" song, all of them are either catchy or just good.
@@SuperUltraBritishGigaChad totally agree. Can't think of anytime I hit "skip" when they come up on a playlist.
If 1999 and 2006 had a baby. There is definitely a market for this sound. Orgy was way ahead of its time IMO. Jay Gordon had some ideas that could work well today
Lol Ricky and i toured together and did merch back in 08 😂 his nickname was “titty fish” and he’s a wonderful human. Tripped me out when i saw he was in MIW, haven’t seen him in years. Good job Ricky, keep killin it 🤘🏼
Edit: he was selling merch for a band called: “Fall From Grace” from Seattle, Wa.
He also directed this video. :)
@@jodiemanthei6160 that’s awesome, thank you for the tidbit 🙏🏼🤘🏼
Been a MiW fan since 2014 & each sound they use works for me. From metalcore to industrial to butt-rock. They make it all work for me. And Finn, as someone who likes lyrics with a positive message, you should like a lot of what they do. Chris has a lot of songs with positive messaging.
Ghost in the Mirror is their first music video with Frank as the bassist.
Motionless I’m white has such a great stage presence I got to see them in 2020 before the pandemic and holy shit they fucking rock shows sold out the Portland Oregon show and fuck was it amazing
Motionless I'm white? Never heard of them, sounds corny
Finally some MIW appreciation
Being from Scranton, its wild to me seeing them go from a local band being featured in "The Electric City" newspaper and my mom yelling at me to turn off the "screaming music" to where they are now.
As a dude with A beard who listens to metal, I give MiW 2 thumbs up.
Marilyn Manson’s Holy Wood is in my top 10 albums of all time, and Antichrist superstar is iconic too!
Antichrist Superstar and Hybrid Theory may be the most important albums of my life
Mechanical Animals has a special place in my heart. I just love the vibe of that album.
@@sharkuel well yeah it’s the holy trinity , Mansons trilogy. I just feel sad that Finn can’t feel this music. That’s why I d recommend Holy Wood to him , it’s more up his alley with the punk vibes of “burning flag”, “born again”, “fight song”.
I ve listened to all 3 albums a gazillion times !
I might be one of the only of my group that found their first album almost unpalatable besides a song or two. I love how their sound has evolved over the times. This one definitely brings me back to Rats and Necessary Evil with Jonathan Davis days. That’s when I discovered the band because I’m a huge fan of Korn.
Almost wondering what you think of the band Tallah, which mixes that early nu-metal sounds almost with a mathcore/deathcore twist in it
I've been hoping since Tallah started Fin would discuss them. So at this point I feel like he either doesn't like them or isn't aware of their existence lol
@@SKVMTR4SH i feel like they haven’t gotten that much exposure yet, mainly because their sound is so niche. I wouldn’t call their music accesible or catchy, but it’s very unique and done extremely well. Have you heard their new track ‘Telescope’? So many tempo changes 😂 think I heard Finn say he wasn’t the biggest fan of the Nu Metal movement, but I would lean towards he might not have heard it yet.
@@hunterwilliams5302 To be honest Telescope isn't my favorite song they put out but I'm sure within the upcoming months they'll release another song that maybe I'll like more. Overconfidence and Placenta are their best tracks imo. I'm still hoping Fin discusses them at least a little. Either way I'm thinking about seeing them with All That Remains
Nah i’ve talked about tallah many times
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA interesting I’ve only been following for about a month so I’m behind
As someone who is an epileptic, a warning is better than not having one at all and then someone having a seizure and then Motionless in White and company is viable for a lawsuit.
Videos have to have warning that need to have that lights or anything that can trigger a seizure. Whether you hate it or not, its just for those who need it. Same rule applies to video games and movies. I have lived with epilepsy for 12 years and i hate even having it.
Well, why not just make a video with less flashing so epileptics can watch it? That’s my point.
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA But then it impedes on what the musician visions on its creativity. Yes it sucks for us that we have to watch said video with flashing lights but its their creativity, their music video. They can do whatever they wish with it as long as they know that a warning has to be put up for those who are sensitive to flashing lights and/or have epilepsy. Don't get me wrong Finn, i get what you are saying but if every video had less flashing lights to help those who have epilepsy which in a perfect world would be nice, will never happen, it will feel like another restriction being placed on the artist.
I learn about so many bands that I've never heard of from you, Finn. Appreciate you man!! 🤘🏻
I love MIW because i get so many breaking benjamin vibes from the vocalist.
Thoughts and Prayers is a banger. Been my PR song for a while. Gimme the 16ths
Haha love MIW but had Heart Attack Man pop up first when I read thoughts and prayers 🤦♀️ hahaha
I'd love to see a video about Sullivan King meshing EDM and Rock
Listen to Santa's Pissed by MiW. Back when they were still just local. You won't regret it.
So glad to see you talk about MIW! (My favorite band). As for their first album, Creatures, I’d say what set them apart to me is that they used synths in a way much closer to electro-industrial as opposed to how other metalcore / electronicore acts were using them at the time (sounding closer to trance or EDM).
Like I’m sure you pointed out, their second album I think added some Marilyn Manson vibes to their sound.
What made me happy about their second and third albums in particular is how they worked with Tim Skold. A lot of people know of Skold because of him being a part of Marilyn Manson for two albums, but what I think he should be more recognized for is his solo industrial stuff and his tenure in KMFDM.
On their 4th and 5th albums, I’d say MIW pulled more influence in from nu-metal.
What makes them my favorite band personally is how they’re able to mash up a decent amount of influences and blend them together while tying them in to a sort of horror aesthetic. Some songs are campy and fun, and others are serious. A good blend of everything in my humble opinion.
OK kids, settle in for a boomer/genX bedtime story.
Once upon a time in 2019 I first saw MIW by "accident" opening for Alice Cooper-Halestorm. Got a pair of tickets from a co worker whose wife was sick. Took my then 15 yr old daughter who wanted to see Halestorm and I didn't mind seeing ol' black eyes again (daughter was not impressed... "who's that old guy creeping around with the cane?" 😄She was duly impressed with his guitarist. some blonde who killed it every time she stepped into the spotlight for her solos). I had never heard of Motionless in White and didn't even bother looking them up and sampling some songs prior to the show.
Anyway I was in the t shirt line not even paying any attention to MIW who obviously was the opening act. it was at open air Starlight Theater in Kansas City and we could still see the stage while in the shirt line. Most of the crowd is what Finn calls "red state butt rockers" but there was a small pocket of vampire kids with blue, violet, green hair and the mandatory paleface & dark eyeliner look who were singing along. Unfortunately for MIW it was a summer show & they were on while it was still daylight and their stage design and lighting didn't come off too well. There was no big screen media visuals just a plain black curtain with MIW logo. Maybe a few headstones I don't remember. The whole band looked like cheesy wanna be vampires trapped out in the sun. I think I even joked to my daughter about the angry little vampire band. But their sound was half decent and even not knowing diddly squat about them I found myself tapping my foot and nodding my head as we s-l-o-w-l-y made our way to the shirt tables. By the time we got to the front I bought an MIW shirt cause I've always supported "new" up and coming bands. LOL. Besides I already had Halestorm and Cooper shirts from prior tours. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that MIW wasn't a "new" opening act level band at all and they had like 4-5 albums out over 10 yrs. Why isn't this music on the radio? WTF?
Still with me? Need a sip of water? we can finish the story tomorrow if you're dozing off...
OK, here we go again....
The next day I looked up MIW on RUclips and watched bits and pieces of a couple live concerts to see their show at a venue with proper lighting and sound. Oh yes, much better. Hearing song refrains I recognized from the night before I looked at the timestamped setlist in the comments and got the song titles. Disguise, AMERICA, Voices, etc. I searched those songs/videos to hear studio versions. Not bad. I got the album names from the description and searched "MIW Full Album" and binge listened most of the day. I created a Motionless in White station on Pandora to find other songs in whatever genre this was. Who knew a person could have so much unresolved teen angst/anger/rebellion at almost 60 yrs old. the last 3-4 months been doing a deep dive into Dark Wave, Synth wave, Industrial Goth (check out YT channel Communion after Dark: ruclips.net/channel/UCvb_p-FZTOiTRDhUU78Kwww ) but MIW still come up in my recommended list on YT occasionally. Check out Deadstream II from the old Pennhurst Asylum ruclips.net/video/BLI-OqfxEE4/видео.html. great show!!
Saw them live again last fall (2022) in Bonner Springs at whatever they are calling Sandstone Amphitheater now a days. All I can say is the Trinity of Terror tour kicked ass. MIW, BVB, INK
Having discovered this band and others 4 yrs ago at 56 yrs old I guess I started my goth phase a bit late and now will live happily ever after. If only the normies at work knew what I was listening to in my airbuds at work. HA!!!
nighty night kiddies... watch out for whatever's under your bed or lurking in the closet.
Fearless signed some really great bands during those metalcore years. Pierce The Veil were signed around this time too.
My boyfriend met Chris Motionless at Van's Warped Tour ages ago. He was super drunk and had no idea who he had met until later on.
I thought this was a video about Cyberpunk 2077 when I first saw the thumbnail. I was like yo u didn't know he did video games too😄
My wife and I saw Motionless with In This Moment last summer, holy shit was that a great show!! Crazy shit happened in the pit tho, is sitting down and doing simulated crewing to the beat shouting “Row” a thing outside of Montana? It’s been a minute since I was in the pit but that took me off guard. Gotta say the kids stopped being total assholes like when Scene was a thing. No more throwing elbows and shit.
I absolutely loved disguise. that album was soooo awesome. I think I am ready for new stuff now though. so bring it on
I absolutely love MIW and I fucking love this song the album can't come soon enough
I love MIW. Thhey have really evolved in refined themselves and their sound. They have a great mix of heavy and pop-ish songs. Something for everyone.
I'm so happy Finn finally talks about miw it makes me happy to know that he'd heart this comment lmao
As a member of the dudes-in -their-20s-with-beards club, I can say I love this song.
@1:16 at that time they WERE a local band. yeah, creatures was released on a label but they still regularly played cafe metropolis in wilkes-barre and all the dives in the wyoming valley
Just saw them on the Trinity of terror tour, I had seen them previously as an opener for Slipknot, and I hated them live back then, but they surprised me and really blew me away. All three of the bands from that tour kick ass
I'm not even going to lie creatures as one of my favorite albums when it came out
Also, props for the FF7 reference. 👏👏👏
"Someone watches 7, the makes a student film" genius!
I love the toughts and prayers it has really good vocals and the Another life is really good too. And btw i love how down to earth the band is. They seem like some very nice guys.
That intro riff was pulled straight out of the Born Of Osiris playbook and I love it!
Thank you thank you so much for finally giving MIW some recognition! Such a talented band
One of the few bands in the scene for me that has always delivered since Creatures and just got better overtime
Great song! I've been a huge fan of them since 2011 and like you said they just keep improving 🖤
Chris has got some pipes
That point about the vocal mixing... man ALOT of bands need to hear this☝☝👏
It feels like a lot of bands lately drown their vocals, and a lot of times they have a talented vocalist but it's drowned out, and it puts me off, I'd even prefer more autotuned vocals that are louder than vocals that are drowned out.
That Jeffery star commit had me rolling
9:16 with the raspy vocals and then the high end instrumental+nearly falsetto vocals reminds me of old Korn.
The road from metalcore to WWE-core
My new favourite game is "Finn Mckenty opening" i try my best to get word for word on the intro and im like 65% there xD
I said the same thing, im in NEPA where Motionless In White played at the local venues before becoming famous and I thought man this is one of the best local bands around, but I never thought they would be famous and grow as much as they did.
The picture on the thumbnail has some real “we demand 5 tickets to The Boss Baby 2: Family Business” energy
Had no idea they existed until I saw the Cyberhex video on my feed. I'm hooked - super looking forward to the new album release.
Every video Finn puts out “I’m not really a a fan of this band or this genre but it is technically pretty good!”
Huh? I like Motionless
Finn is a savage!
Absolutely love this band, every album is different style but always so good.
chris has good positive vibes in real life. I do hope he won't get too much gatekeep. Metalheads can be hard.
Jeffrey Starr 🤣
On that semi-related note, Hollywood Undead also has new shit.
Top tier band for sure
Ghoste, Slipknot and MIW are my favs I feel caller tf out
Alexisonfire is back I think we should address that
I love their earlier Creatures sound best but I do dig the newer stuff and all the production in it. Can't wait to see them live again.
I’ve been listening to this band since before creatures. If you listen to their entire catalog you can see they’ve danced around genres the entire time and have done it well. They have a fantastic sound and do it well!
Real scene kids remember when Jeffree Star actually made music 😢
Ooof, that sounds terrible 😂
“Never let a guitarist mix a song, they’re gonna make the guitars too loud” *looks at the remastered We Stitch These Wounds by Black Veil Brides* 👀
It sounds like Chris ripped his chords. Feels a lot weaker. Probably why he does cleans more on the new one.
the high production/ pop sensibility version of them just makes sense. Like if AFI wanted to be a bit more brutal/ industrial. They’ve got my attention now!
It's like if doom and cyberpunk had a baby
Graveyard shift is their best album. Loud I wasn’t a huge fan of but it’s still a banger! One of my all time fav bands!
Edit: I stand corrected. Well done Miw.
Damn motionless In White is the best goth band of all time right up there with Five Finger Death Punch, Lil Nas X and Slipknot you really got to give it up for the ogs who created the subculture in the first place this is definitely a good way to start you're goth phase 😂🤣
Is it just me or did they always have awesome merch? I had a shirt with Dracula on it, I got one at warped tour that was inspired by Stone Cold Steve Austin. I remember those booty shorts lol my scene friend had a pair
I was wondering this Q for the last couple weeks finally googled punk
rockmba /motionless.....any 3days ago this dropped hummm
I love their last album
I'm so glad you reacted to this. I love this band
I try to see them every time they're in town
I played cyberpunk on ps4 when it came out and it was fine to me! Loved the game wish there was more to it tho !
"Who knew Jeffree Star was in a band?"
Jeffree Star got his start in music, he was a MySpace musician back before RUclips was even a thing.
To the person that called them spooky Breaking Benjamin: I hate that you're right...
I agree with Finn, if you only listen to/watch videos that agree with what you already think, you're doing yourself a disservice. But also, it's nice when someone else justifies your liking something lol
Also, never paid enough attention to see that Clown directed America. I definitely saw his style in it, but never bothered to actually see who it was.
Thoughts and Prayers sounds like Slipknot because Corey Taylor was supposed to feature on it
This single also reminds me of Korn - The Path of Totality , and i liked that album.
And for some reason this songs appeals to me.
Never cared for Motionless In White but i could listnen to this.
I have a beard and I love these guys haha. I'm not some gatekeeping asshole though. I've learned to appreciate all types of music.
MIW have been pretty solid, they know their market and how to work it.
Cyberpunk Goth
This is f*kn awesome
As someone who got into metalcore around 2010-2011 Miw has always been the realest in the game especially amongst the Yacht rock most of those bands are making now
Not sure about realest in the game lmao
Aaaaaand I’ll be going through their discography tonight 👍🏾
I saw this band on the family values tour back in the day…except then they were called Orgy. #more570plz
Motionless in white is my favorite band next to lamb of god. And I’d say motionless more so because of goth culture and the friendliness
Circus of dead squirrels - lipstick on a pig
6:50 Dude you play Cyberpunk? That's awesome man, especially because I even remember you saying that you quit video games, even made a video about it lol
Nah you gotta listen to what I said in that video not just react to the title!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Fair point for sure, been playing 1.5 on PC, it's been a blast
They better play this in the Trinity of Terror Tour!!!!!!
I'm kind of late to the MIW party but I loved Graveyard Shift and Creatures. This new song might be a bit of a grower for me, but still pretty good!
Also, side note: Are my eyes deceiving me or is that Chris Fehn (ex-Slipknot) playing the ringmaster in the America video?!
I stopped listening to MIW a long time ago when their sound evolved out of my wheelhouse. Still rip Creatures from time to time though, 10/10 album!
Thoughts and prayers may be the best song they’ve ever made IMO
oh yessI thought back then they where Aiden.. but metalcorey.. never noticed they became bigger than Aiden where was Aiden was trying to be MCR and AFI combined
I love MIW.. for some reason they keep interesting to me.
Sci Fi goths are tight
