Wow I didn’t notice that Crocodile Cacophony was a leitmotif, I didn’t even realize how genius the DKC2 soundtrack was. Can’t believe you made me love it even more!
This one is new to me too, and I've picked out about 15-20 unique leitmotifs in DKC2 over the years. I think one of my favorite discoveries was figuring out the Rareware fanfare at the start is a leitmotif of a portion of the DK Rescued end credits theme.
I feel like 'Krook's March' could be considered something of an 'Anthem' for the Kremlings, particularly with that last stretch of the song(you know the part) acting as the counterbalance antithesis to 'DK Island Swing'.
@@TeamTrainWreck It also has lyrics: "We are Kremlings- hear our cry. Hoist the krossbones to the sky! We are Kremlings- and we're proud as we stand on the coasts of land!"
Man I never hear ANYONE talk about Krook's March. For the longest time I always skipped it in the playlist cause it just sounded like a generic villain's march to me, which was less appealing to me than the likes of Forest Interlude and other ambient tracks. It wasn't until I gave it more of a listen and I heard that calming synth leading into the minor key DK Island Swing that I realized this song is a gem. It's ridiculously good, it deserves to be propped up more than it is.
Castle Crush is probably my favorite level of the game. The level throws difficult challenges one after the other, but you manage to overcome them. Story-by-story, you ascend up the castle despite the Kremling's best efforts to stop you. The music serves it well. There's something a bit foreboding about it, but also something triumphent and hopeful. It's like saying that your ultimate challenge is up ahead, but that you've earned the right to face it and are qualified overcome it.
@@runningoncylinders3829 Yeah, I get it. It's pretty much how I feel about Dixie. In fact she's probably my favorite videogame character because of how much sentimental value she has to me.
I just wanna add that Crocodile Cacophony goes even deeper than that, leitmotif-wise (and I made this connection instead of the one the video talks about 😅): the awesome, melodic interlude that’s so great the _Smash Ultimate_ remix used it twice in a row is actually the backing harmony for a portion of the regular map music, “Welcome to Crocodile Isle”. “Welcome to Crocodile Isle”’s main melody, meanwhile, pulls double duty as half of “Boss Bossanova”’s main melody. The other half is from “Jib Jig”, aka the short, jaunty, and first totally original level tune from the scenic rigging levels. So in play order, you have this already-intimidating overworld theme, and hearing it again as part of the regular boss music is little surprise. But then you catch the music from one of the easiest levels in the game while fighting Krow, and the message is clear: It completely doesn’t matter how pleasant the rest of your experience is; nowhere is safe. All of Crocodile Isle is against you, and at the center of it all is the Kaptain. The Kremling Kommander K. Rool himself. I love this game, it’s my favorite ever and nothing will ever change that 💚🐊🏴☠️😁
One cool thing I recognized about Welcome to Crocodile Isle is that it actually is quite similar to the Soviet March "The Red Army is the Strongest". Turns out that David Wise had me inspiration from Russian composers, and while I don't believe he heard the song, he definitely was influenced by songs like it.
Love this, so good! DKC2 is a phenomenal soundtrack, and this makes me love it even more! Can't wait to hear you deep dive into DKC3's as well, I adore that ost.
great video! Krook's March is certainly underrated amongst DKC2's more celebrated compositions... and, yeah, that Island Swing/Jib Jig little reprise at the end has always given me chills. BTW yet another of Crocodile Cacophony's motifs comes right after that percussion section - that "brass sequence" so to speak is basically a variation of "Welcome to Crocodile Isle"s main melody. If you never noticed before, try humming the Crocodile Isle/World Map melody at that section, it's such a nice counterpoint! And it ties everything together - the Kremling land itself is an extension of K.Rool's... well, rule.
He probably chose it because the DKC games are basically designed for completionists, with their hidden bonus stages, unlockable stages as you complete more bonus stages, and true ending that unlocks when you collect everything.
I love how Krooks March was only a third of the video, and you spend the other two on entirely unrelated tracks. Using the most unique part to 'clickbait' so you can gush about the whole soundtrack like everyone, eh D4? And using Crocodile Cacophony's leitmotif as a segue; genius. I daresay that's some good designing.... designing for RUclips!
I mean, music speaks for itself! I felt the other bits were necessary to establish the use of the motifs - DK Island Swing and Crocodile Cacophony - as emblematic of characterization for Diddy and K. Rool, and how Krook's March incorporates both of them at its crescendo in order to contrast the two forces coming to a head. Plus I wish I were more clever than going "oh yes, Krook from Donkey Kong Country 2, THAT'S the sexy character the general RUclips audience wants to see." But I will accept the praise regardless!
So atmospheric and memorable that it inspired King K. Rool's iconic Finest Hour in the cartoon. Which is also a fitting title for the climactic final section of Krook's March.
I don't wanna sound weird but you have a really nice voice. It definitely didn't feel like you were reading from a script at all - I could tell you were putting your heart into this review. Awesome work! I can't wait to see you tackle more musical vids in the future.
Oh man i am so happy that you tell this to everybody. This song tell a story , the story of bad things happen and a hero rise from this, then struggle, but finish by get to the final blow then comes the most epich donkey theme to show everyone the final encounter is here. Best DK soundtrack for me too.
Run Rambi Run is so genius, i remember how terrified I was when the music changed and the giant Zinger showed up! I was so traumatized by that moment that i refused to play that level, no joke!
Thanks for giving Token Tango some love. I don't think it gets enough - I've even heard ostensible remixes of it on OCRemix that just use it as an excuse to remix Island Swing again. That's why I was delighted and amazed to find out that Wise himself snuck it into his jazzy Temple~Island Swing remix in Tropical Freeze. Diddy's theme right beside DK's theme, where it belongs.
I remember it was a few years ago while replaying DKC2 that first noticed the DK Island Swing part of Krook's March and it's pretty easily been by favourite DKC2 track ever since. I hadn't picked up on Crocodile Cacophony being in there too though, that's pretty rad! Really cool that you covered this song, I feel like you don't hear people talk about it much.
I don’t know if you do video requests but, I was replaying the first level of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze and realized solid of an opening it is for such a marvelous game, So it be cool if you could like review it for Donkey Kong December, or at all
I also love that the fake victory theme is based in something between the overworld theme and Krook's March, just when you tought you were rescuind Donkey, you get bamboozle'd!
When I hear DK and Diddy's soundbytes integrated into Jungle Jitter from DKC3 (and it's not those Minkeys throwibg nuts), I get the same impression as DK's appearance in Krook's March. There may be many monkeys in the jungle, but the Kongs are also close by.
Loved Krook's March. Not as loved as other themes from DKC2 but it is really deep and tormenting theme. Loved the final part of Krook's March as it was about to lead onto something before repeating to the start of the loop.
I’ve been wondering the name of the song. I always just called it “Castle Crush”. It was definitely one of my favorites as well. It’s so foreboding and fits ascending the Kremlings dreadful keep perfectly.
Oh man the GBA soundtrack does not get enough love at all. I've always loved Wise's rendition of Enchanted River, the problem being it only plays underwater... in the levels that aren't Riverside Race. And one of those has Nibbla constantly chasing you out of the water, and the other has lightning strikes that... also constantly chase you out of the water! Cascade Capers is a REALLY good pull, as well!
Let me finish Xenoblade 3 first, I have Sparks of Hope lined up as the next game I want to play, but Xenoblade 3 ended up, uh, a lot longer than I expected! I don't have it currently planned, but if something about it really strikes me (and I think it will, I love Edge conceptually), it certainly puts it on the table!
LOL that bird off..... im more about the country feel than the theming so while i think this song is very good i still don't consider it high among my favorites , but sometimes i will have this song play in my head all day anyways....
I'm pretty sure I pulled them all from Musescore but I'm sure one or two weren't directly from there. I found all of them easily by looking up the name with sheet music in google
Oh no, I love Stickerbush Symphony. It's just that I don't think it's a song that works as "a theme to identify Diddy Kong with". It's more emblematic of Donkey Kong Country as a whole, at compared to the way the standard DK Island Swing is for DK or Gang-Plank Galleon is for K. Rool.
not gonna lie, I love your passion for the game, but I can't help but distaste each second were you edited in game elements from DK64... geez I hate that game so much, it's so disgustingly made, that it stains anything associated with it.
A bit too many effects for my taste. Don't overuse them. But otherwise awesome video as allways. Especially the moving characters when the music is mentioned appear way to often in my opinion and are just annoying.
Man I dunno I think they're funny, and otherwise those moments are "close eyes, enjoy music". Which is totally valid. Plus I like having a visual indicator for the individual instruments and feel the whole "visual wavform" thing didn't really fit the mood of Donkey Kong compared to "funny animal does the instrument meme". Understand where you're coming from, but I really like it vibe-wise!

Can we all just admit that there isnt a single dud on the DKC2 playlist? Every track in the game SLAPS ENORMOUS
The ship theme sounds mostly really good, but the creaking noises kinda ruin it for me.
