      @Avi Drissman - very nice... I have gigabit as well but COAX dual gig links. I was wondering if someone tested upload at gig speed. My coax gives me 920mb down/ 42 mb up at the moment but have gotten as high as 990/50 . Full IPS/IDS , smart tags and geo filters on.

    • @TheBrandonAF
      @TheBrandonAF 3 года назад

      @Scott M Thank you for the response! My main interest is my Edge Router Lite’s baby CPU can’t handle QoS without reducing my network significantly (100/100) and I do use the full speeds frequently. I am not aware of a way around this though I imagine with some time I could make it work.
      Speaking of latency, my primary need is for gaming. Does the Geo Filter allow you to lock into a region? Would I be able to limit a LAN IP from seeing outside a selectable region in an effort to minimize latency? Do you think this device would meet my needs? Controls me up and down speeds to max my bandwidth while prioritizing an IP or IPs traffic specifically related to gaming? Thank you again Scott!! I truly appreciate the help!!

The only thing it doesn’t have is load balancing so in other words you couldn’t assign percentages of usage to a certain wan. The fall over takes less than 5 missed pings and switches over from my testing and just like he states in the video switching back over to primary is automatic and faster than the failover process. Other than the whole memory leak issue I have I love it ! Much better solution than my old USG-Pro.

    I've been looking forward to this review as I've been planning on putting a UniFi network with WiFi and security cameras into my house. On learning about the UDM Pro I thought this would be a much better solution than a Cloud Key/USG. From your review I see I was right. Now I just have the wait to be able to get one here in NZ...
    A few observations:
    1. 8 port hub? Why did they even bother as the UDM Pro is obviously going to be used with other switches. I suppose that does mean you can connect directly to 9 switches...
    2. I agree with you about the need for a second drive. (It did get me wondering if a SATA to eSATA adapter exists that you could then use to connect an eSATA raid box...)
    3. Your comment about 2FA not kicking in when there is no internet access. If a bad actor has physical access to your UDM Pro you've got bigger problems than the lack of 2FA
    4. I love how your plant appears to be quivering in anticipation at the beginning of the video

    • @scubthebub
      @scubthebub 4 года назад

      I totally agree with your comment on the 8 port switch, I find it weird and a bit awkward as well. I would have guessed a setup closer to the USG-PRO. If this really has upto 8gbps through put max then you'll be wanting to use the SFP+ ports over the ethernet anyway.

    So far so good on my UDM-PRO usage for my home office. I'm starting to implement the UniFi Protect video and trying to get a base-line for how many cameras it can comfortably handle with IDS/IPS/DPI enabled, running the UniFi controller and general performance on a 300Mbps AT&T Fiber connection. I've got quite a few clients that could really use the feature set with controller and camera systems so I was super excited to see this product released. In addition to the nice lineup of features the 10Gbps WAN was a specific selling point for a couple of my library clients who are getting 10Gbps fiber connections from a state-funded program. We were about to purchase a non-UniFi Edge Router IniFinity ER-8-XG that had the 10Gbps SFP+ ports to be able to handle it but now we can use the UDM-Pro and benefit from the other additional features as well. Great timing for what I'm hoping to be a great piece of equipment.

That the UDM Pro has no PoE ports doesn't matter for me, as I move my USW-8-150W and would actually work better for the camera's I going to purchase. Ah decisions, decisions :-)

    Chris, Thank you for the great video. I'm planning on going full Ubiquiti for my home network (because I can, dammit!), and I can't wait to build it around the UDM Pro. I too wish that it came with the ability to have a second HDD, but many NVR systems from Swann, Reolink, Amcrest, etc. all run single HDDs (most likely for cost). Hopefully the 4-bay device we've heard about from UI will alleviate this issue. For the UDM Pro on an (overkill) home network has great packaging and will be great in a small 6,9, 12, or 15U rack. This, one of the G2 24-port switches, some APs and Cams are all I'm looking for and the Unifi system looks to be as close to perfect for power user / SMB needs as one can get.

    Just got mine in the mail today. Moved from the USG to the Dream Machine Pro. It was easy to backup my current controller and restore to the DR Pro and be up in minutes. I bought the DR Pro for home use and although its a little overkill, I am happy to have the faster hardware. My USG just didn't have the power I needed and noticed it would spike at 100% more than I liked. I rather have it all in one (cloud key, USG, and switch) for the price point. Plus I like the form factor over the regular DR. I already have 2 nano HD ACs in my house so I really didn't need anymore coverage that the regular DR (with access point) would have given. I am pretty happy with it so far.

    Ubiquiti needs to make a feature to "Adopt as Spare/Backup" so that if the primary device goes down the management controller can activate the spare/backup automatically. It would just require the equipment be cabled properly.

    I am a HUGE fanboi of Ubiquity products... They are an awesome Networking disruption, overthrowing the big guys for the SOHO builds... The massive performance to price is outstanding... I had Cisco SOHO equipment so I could do a decent VLAN split and firewall. When I upgraded from 300/30 COX package to 1000/1000 FttH setup, that SoHo router could not keep up with the packets and i say only about 500/200 speeds due to the router limitation. I moved to a ER-Lite for a bit and that little box was awesome!!! When the new ER-4 came out, I upgraded to that, and still use it rack mounted. 48 Port Unifi switch and CloudKey Gen2+. 6-G4 cams, 3-150W POE switches in the structured wire closets through the house, 4-UAP PROs through the house. All fiber backbone that goes through all the SFP ports on each switch router. I have a small datacenter in my house and these products kick @$$. 3 subnets, 6 VLANs, about 200 internal IP's.

      Well, got my UDMP up... what a mess! It took over an hour of reboots and retrying before it would even acknowledge there was access to the internet (this was AFTER I had given up 30 minutes if trying to use PPPoE to my modem and just put it on the NAT side of my existing LAN just so I could get in and re-configure for PPPoE later). Now it's all setup and has taken the role my USG previously had, but Protect is an absolute mess. It completely ignores motion zones, alert schedules, and geofencing. Since migrating I'm being bombarded by notifications for every car that passes my house.

    Seeing as just about everyone buying this would have ubnt APs, I would have hoped for POE. The whole point of the "dream machine" (imo) is that you *don't* need another device; that its an enterprise-grade all in one package. So if they wanted to keep costs down, put just one POE port on it. Have it be a single, relatively low wattage port enough for one AP. Then people can use that as the AIO package it is, and if they want to deploy more, then they can add on a switch beyond that. Would also have really liked to see that SFP port be clearly assignable to WAN or LAN, I don't need a 10G wan port, I'd far rather have 2 10G LAN ports, especially since their 10G switches are still quite expensive

    • @blackrockcity

      qwerty22 One really would only need a single PoE adapter for a single Unifi AP. Then the rest are probably going to be connected via the mesh protocol and not have cable runs back to the UDM. Therefore I think Ubiquiti made the right cost saving decision by not including PoE.

    In order to earn the "Pro" moniker, this thing needs the following missing features:
    1. Dual HDD for RAID 1
    2. Hot failover to another identical device in the same rack (in case the whole thing dies)
    3. PoE on at least 4 ports, if not all 8
    4. MUCH more powerful network config abilities - too much walled-garden locked-down BS happening here - SSO required to log in to my local device WTF?
    5. WAN load balancing, either within the same device or using the second mirror device
    With the above features, I would certainly pay up to $1500 for a matched pair, although I think they could realistically hit a $1000-$1200 price point for that kind of setup ($500-$600/ea).
    I understand that dual HDDs could cannibalize market share from the upcoming 4-bay NAS box, but honestly I don't think that's a big enough concern to nerf this thing so hard.

    • @blackrockcity
      @blackrockcity 4 года назад +1

      rjk ‪ I think the video makes a good point that if you need PoE you will get a Unifi PoE switch. But what the video should have mentioned is that most Unifi Video users *already own* a Unifi PoE switch that they can migrate to the UDM Pro.
      Plus 8 ports doesn’t likely even get you 8 cameras because you will probably have a few ports taken by other devices. So then you are in the territory of buying a, say, Unifi 16 port PoE switch. Unifi made the right decision here.

    • @rjk7104
      @rjk7104 4 года назад +1

      @@blackrockcity That's why I said 4 ports. You could then connect 4x PoE cameras, and use your old non-PoE gigiabit switch for the non-PoE equipment instead of buying an expensive new switch or using a mess of injectors. I'm thinking of the small business or even home user that does not want to buy a whole lot of new stuff.

    • @blackrockcity
      @blackrockcity 4 года назад +2

      rjk ‪ you are buying a block of PoE ports no matter what...whether they are built into the UDM or external in a Unifi PoE Switch. You may as well make the customer best apply their money to the number of PoE ports they need. A lot of SMB will need 16 or 24, etc. Some SMB may want to start with 16 ports and buy another 16 ports down the road (if only this UDM device can handle that many cameras). Because everyone has different needs, it’s best to make PoE ports external and modular.(The UDM is already too much of a single point of failure until they add soft failover.)
