A very interesting reaction 🥸💔👩! The lead singer on the song, Thom Yorke, said the song is about being in love with someone, but feeling that they are out of your league. He describes the feeling as: "There's the beautiful people and then there's the rest of us". Creep was released as the lead single from Radiohead's 1993 debut album: Pablo Honey. It was written by Albert Hammond, Mike Hazlewood and Radiohead. It was produced by Sean Slade and Paul Q Kolderie. The song reached #2 on the Alternative Airplay chart, #6 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, #20 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #34 on the Hot 100.
The music video was directed by Brett Turnbull and was filmed at a club in Oxford, England called the Zodiac. For the music video, Radiohead performed a free short concert, playing the song several times. They donated proceeds from audience members to the Oxford magazine Curfew, which had covered their early work. In the audience was the Electronic musician Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet, then a teenager, who years later supported Radiohead on tour and collaborated with Thom Yorke.
The song was written before the band formed. Thom Yorke gave his demo tape version to Colin Greenwood, who joined him and helped put the band together. Thom Yorke based this on a song called: "The Air That I Breathe", which was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood in 1972. After the single: "Creep", was released, Radiohead agreed to share the songwriting royalties, so this is credited to Thom Yorke, Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood. The band members each finished college and signed their EMI Records record deal in 1991. The single wasn't released in the US until Radiohead's debut album in 1993.
Paul Q Kolderie convinced Radiohead's record label, EMI, to release "Creep" as a single. It was initially unsuccessful, but achieved radio play in Israel and became popular on American alternative rock radio. It was reissued in 1993 and became an international hit, likened to Alt-Rock "slacker anthems" including: ''Smells Like Teen Spirit'' by Nirvana and ''Loser" by Beck.
When asked about the song in 1993, Thom Yorke said: "I have a real problem being a man in the '90s... Any man with any sensitivity or conscience toward the opposite sex would have a problem. To actually assert yourself in a masculine way without looking like you're in a hard-rock band is a very difficult thing to do... It comes back to the music we write, which is not effeminate, but it's not brutal in its arrogance. It is one of the things I'm always trying: To assert a sexual persona and on the other hand trying desperately to negate it".
According to the book: "Radiohead: Hysterical And Useless", this song was inspired by Thom Yorke's obsession with a stranger. He was infatuated with a woman who was out of his league, who he'd never met but frequently saw in bars, and he found himself following her around. When he finally got himself drunk enough to build up the courage to confess his obsession, she freaked out.
On the album version, Thom Yorke sings, "You're so f--king special". For radio, he recut it as, "You're so very special". Thom Yorke regrets changing the line for the radio version, saying it disturbed the "sentiment of the song". According to him, the song lost its anger as a result of the lyric change.
    Miscellaneous Notes 🗃:
The song is nicknamed "Crap" by the band due its slacker-anthem ubiquity.
It was named one of the greatest debut singles and one of the greatest songs by Rolling Stone.
The three blasts of guitar noise that precede the chorus was the result of Jonny Greenwood trying to sabotage a tune he considered too "wimpy".
In April 2008, Prince covered the song at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
In 2011, actor-comedian Jim Carrey covered the song at Arlene's Grocery in New York City.
Lea Michele and Dean Geyer performed this on TV show: Glee, in the 2013 episode titled: "Guilty Pleasures."
As of April 2019, in the UK, it was the most streamed song released in 1992, with 10.1 million streams.
In 2021, the singer, Thom Yorke, released a remixed version of the song with synthesizers and time-stretched acoustic guitar.
In 2023, Pentatonix covered the song on the TV show: The Masked Singer, and released a studio version the night after their unmasking.
The 2023 film: Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 3, starts off with a somber Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) singing the song: "Creep", as he ponders on his traumatic past. Its prominent placement in the movie's soundtrack struck a chord with audiences, propelling it back onto the UK Singles chart.
Following the release of their 1993 album: Pablo Honey, Radiohead spent two years touring in support of PJ Harvey And James and Belly. They performed "Creep" at every show, and came to resent it. Ed O'Brien recalled: "We seemed to be living out the same four and a half minutes of our lives over and over again. It was incredibly stultifying". Thom Yorke told Rolling Stone in 1993: "It's like it's not our song any more ... It feels like we're doing a cover". During Radiohead's first American tour, audience members would scream for "Creep", then leave after it was performed. Thom Yorke said the success "gagged" them and almost caused them to break up; they felt they were being judged on a single song. Radiohead were determined to move on rather than "repeat that small moment of [our] lives forevermore".
EMI Records pressured Radiohead to match the song's success, which created tension during the recording of their second album: The Bends (1995). Radiohead departed from the musical style of "Creep" and grew weary of it, feeling it set narrow expectations of their music, and did not perform the song for several years after it was released. It had a good side as well, with the success of the song: "Creep", it meant that Radiohead were not in debt to EMI Records, and so had more freedom on their next album: The Bends (1995).
    Lyrics 🗒:
    When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
    You're just like an angel
    Your skin makes me cry
    You float like a feather
    In a beautiful world
    I wish I was special
    You're so f--kin' special
    But I'm a creep
    I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
    I don't belong here
I don't care if it hurts
    I wanna have control
    I want a perfect body
    I want a perfect soul
    I want you to notice
    When I'm not around
    So f--kin' special
    I wish I was special
    But I'm a creep
    I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
    I don't belong here
She's running out the door (run)
    She's running out
    She run, run, run, run
    Run, run
    Whatever makes you happy
    Whatever you want
    You're so f--kin' special
    I wish I was special
    But I'm a creep
    I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
    I don't belong here
    I don't belong here
