It’s funny cause there’s nowhere in the myths where Hades and Zeus are arch rivals, yet most people today see it that way haha. Heck, sometimes Hades was considered an aspect of Zeus, and was worshipped as Zeus Aidoneus (Coming from the Greek spelling of Hades) or Zeus Chthonios (Zeus of the Underworld)

Hades was the god that got screwed by Zeus. Since Hades was the first born son of Kronus he most likely would have became the head god but Zeus wanted to draw straws to see who ruled over what so Zeus got to be king of the skies, Posiden got to be king of the seas, and Hades stuck being king of the underworld.

In fairness to Zeus and a point that never gets made is that Zeus does "dick" around with Hera's permission. One or two of the legends actually do express that and I suspect that is the case more often than not. Whenever there is sincere prayer and a hero is needed it is Hera who encourages and allow Zeus to share his "godly DNA" to create a hero to overcome the challenge. Zeus' demigod children are usually children of destiny and purpose. After encouraging Zeus Hera then hides and torment these women and children behind Zeus back while publicly she plays victim to his "infidelities". I came to this conclusion after reading and watching movies of as many versions of the life of Hercules as I could find along with reading other stories of women who bore children for Zeus. Hera wasn't even Zeus first choice for a wife, He was first married to Themis, a goddess of law and order, a goddess I consider a more fitting match for a God of lightning and Justice. I am not sure how Hera became his wife, but maybe she always had ambition to become ruler of the Olympians and becoming Zeus wife was the closest she could get to it. Being the wife of Zeus also perfectly positions her in a place if trust. I suspect she is, and quietly so, responsible for a lot of the chaos and discrediting amongst the gods of the greek pantheon and ultimately her desire is to dethrone Zeus is partially responsible for making this politheistic pantheon seem so petty, resulting in their loss of influence in the modern world.

Hades and Hestia. Of all the gods they are the only ones who NEVER abused humans. It's perfect Hestia looks after mortals while they're living and Hades watches over them when they die. If anything Hades should have been Hera's husband. Behind them should be Ares and Aphrodite because all is fair in Love and War.

Although I see Zeus as spreading such tale to justify his own misbehaviour. In my opinion Zeus is not the strongest, but surely the fittest to rule, as Hades would be too strict a ruler, while Poseidon too temperamental. Zeus, no matter how morally reprehensible, has a forgiving side and prefers to discuss things at the table with some good Ambrosia rather than electrocute his problems to Hades.

Personally I think the Titan Coeus would be a good leader of the universe. For one he's the Titan of Intellect. So for the most part he would make good decisions with an occasional bad decision thrown in. The only notable bad decision of his I could think of was that he sided with Cronus in the Titan War. In all fairness, however, If my little brother was about to be thrown in Tartarus I would try to protect him too. So I don't really blame Coeus for siding with Cronus for that reason. Coeus is also logical, so he would not get his emotions mixed up with his responsibilities unless the situation calls for it. It is also clear that Coeus isn't that bad and that he does care about the other Titans. For example when Coeus was in Tartarus, he tried to free his fellow Titans. The only obstacle that kept him for completing said task was Cerberus. That story also proves that Coeus is willing to take a leadership position if the situation calls for it. Also I just want Coeus to be leader of the universe because he's my favorite deity in all of Greek Mythology.

I'd like Hades to take the throne, he's a stern yet chill guy. Also, think about it this way; if Hades were to take the throne it would be extremely symbolic of the saying "The meek shall inherit the earth" as he would be riding up from his relatively low position compared to the other gods and become the ruler of the highest point of existence, the Throne of Olympus itself.
It would also make even more sense due to him being the oldest brother and traditionally the oldest son becomes the ruler. This would fix the situation to conform to that rule.
Speaking of which, it kind of makes me wonder as to what would happen if none of the Olympians were eaten and it actually plays out more as a traditional inheritance. Just think of how that would change the myth's timeline!

Quinn Holloway TBH it’s not entirely clear whether or not Hades took part in the coup against Zeus as mentioned in this video. Some versions say that literally *ALL* of the other gods (which technically would have included Hades) took part in the coup with the sole exception of Hestia. Others, however, more specifically say that all of the *Olympians* took part, in which case it would be safe to assume that Hades didn’t take part because he technically wasn’t usually considered an Olympian, mostly because he declined to take seat of power on Mount Olympus in favor of staying in the underworld and managing his kingdom there, only ever traveling to Olympus when summoned or when
Personally I’m inclined to think the latter is more consistent with Hades’ character. Or if he DID take part in the coup, perhaps he did so not to try to take Zeus’ throne, but rather to teach his brother a lesson in humility.

First of all the first son thing doesn't work for hades because he was swallowed by their father cronos along with the rest siblings. Except for zeus who was saved by their mother and exchanged for a stone and grown outside still he came of age and freed his siblings. To me it was at that moment zeus became king of them all, because they looked up to him and of course he grew outside, he was more of the senior child now and than hades who was swallow and had so experience of the outside world or influence and then zeus lead them against their father and later won the battle. Secondly hades as ruler won't work because hades power comes from fear and if he was king he would make humanity tremble just to get more powerful, because if the human race is at peace he would be at his weakest and won't be able to defend his throne. His power is similar to ares who feeds on chaos

To be fair to Zeus, when you don't have a canon things can get wonky. The coup totally makes sense when you figure the gods got tired of Zeus mucking around and thought they themselves would be a better ruler, but then it doesn't if you read what ancient Greek Pagans say about Zeus and how the guy is fundamentally righteous.

Zeus was literally the worst. such an evil wretched deity. all he did was trick women, then sleep with them against their will, murder his sons, sleep with his sisters, cheat on his wife, did Prometheus *dirty,* more murder, rape, and trickery. he literally only loved Athena and Heracles. now, Heracles was a *based* Sigma Male with Black Air Force Energy. but Athena also occasionally dabbled in fucking with humans. a favoured past time of Zeus. so fuck Zeus. and Athena.

Some folks say Hades should have taken the throne because he was the eldest (or eldest male anyway), and some say Poseidon, because he was stronger and because the sea figured so powerfully in Greek life.
But as you pointed out, Zeus was the one who actually freed them, Zeus took the necessary actions. Certainly he was a "man of action" in that way. (A little too much action, nyuk nyuk)
Rightful, maybe not - but effective, yes. Not because of his powers, either, not even because of his winning personality necessarily. Because almost every one of the gods owed Zeus. They owed him their lives for various reasons, they owed him for favors done or judgments granted. Zeus' stature among the gods was very much like that of any of the Greek leaders that people would have known very well.
The ancient world placed a huge amount of importance on loyalty and on paying back what you were given - be that positive or negative. "An eye for an eye" wasn't a Greek saying, but they definitely had echoes of that attitude in the way they did things. Some of the great philosophers were fond of forgiveness, but most of their myths don't include even a tiny speck of mercy. It simply didn't make sense, in their world, at that time: if someone betrayed or attacked you, you didn't turn the other cheek, you destroyed them so that they could not bring harm to you or your lands again.
Therefore: the myths reinforced the attitudes that existed, justified and explained them as well. It's deeply interesting, though, that this myth doesn't even hint that Zeus considers destroying any of those who raised their hands against him in this coup. He punishes them - he doesn't subject them to punishments as severe as, say, Prometheus. And it's interesting, too, that Hera is shown here as having had enough, and taking action: with zero emphasis (in the original stories! not in some translations) on "she deserved to fail because women shouldn't disobey." Though that attitude did exist in Greek life - very rarely does that attitude get reflected in myths, even in this one where we might expect to see such.
Zeus got to the top because of his wits and being able to keep folks (mostly) feeling grateful towards him. If he could have remained more faithful to his wife, maybe the coup wouldn't have happened at all, eh?

I think Zeus noticed that and I think that's why he split all the responsibilities with all the gods so they are more like a government type of rule. A government type that is very similar to the way the US works in its government. Zeus would be like the president who has a lot of power and has a final word. The Fates are kind of like the judicial branch. And all the gods together are like the Congress and Senate where they have to talk and make an agreement on certain issues to improve things. If I recall...there was a point in the Iliad where Zeus sent Iris to Poseidon (who was helping the Greeks at the time) and warned him to disengage. Zeus via Iris told her to tell Poseidon if he refused he would take the fight to him directly. He (Zeus) warned Poseidon that he was his elder by birth and stronger. Poseidon initially responded defiantly to this until warned by Iris that the "avenging spirits" a.k.a. the Erinyes (the Furies) always attend (help) the elder born (Zeus). After that he backed down and fled the battle and returned to the sea. I also recall another incidence when Zeus rebuked all the other assembled god(s) with the statement that if he chose to remain seated no god in Olympus individually or combined could move him.

Well, let's see what we're working with here in terms of who would be a better ruler than Zeus.
Poseidon is the most powerful participant and is the eldest born son of Kronos there, making him the supposed rightful heir, and he does have experience leading a kingdom with his own underwater domain. But like the sea, his mood could change at any moment, from being a kind cool and benevolent ruler, to a raging and fierce despot.
Hera is the queen of Olympus by marriage and probably has more experience with ruling, but she can be petty and downright ruthless at times, as shown when she conceived Ares with the major intent on having him overcome Zeus(surprised he wasn't involved with this) or when she threw her hate conceived child Hephestus off of Olympus just because he looked ugly.
Appolo doesn't really have much going for him in terms of him being a good choice for a ruler, he is just as petty, prideful, and arrogant as zeus himself. He has no experience being a ruler, he is more likely to play the lyre on the throne than watch over mankind and more than anything else, I believe he only wants to be king for the name alone not for the responsibility.
Athena is an interesting choice , though she is the wisest among the Olympians and will probably make the right call for the greater good, I think it very likely she will use the throne to move humankind and her fellow gods like pieces on a chessboard. There is no emotion in it, no concern for how the others would feel about her decisions. Plus, though she may be the wisest, she has no experience ruling over a kingdom.
Overall, the olympian revolt was doomed to fail. Because no matter who would replace Zeus, the outcome would not change because they are just as bad, if not worse than zeus himself. Plus, while Zeus is by no means a perfect ruler, he has done the most to secure Olympus as a kingdom for his realm. He released his siblings from Kronos 's stomach, he lead the gods in epic wars such as the titanomachy, gigantomachy, and the attack of Typhon to name a few and always came out on top. In fact, he was the only one to stand and face Typhon in combat while the others ran for their lives, he saved Olympus (with a little help) and the world while the rest of his godly kind cowered in fear. Most important of all, though he is an unfaithful husband and at times can be a petty self serving asshole, but both humanity and Olympus prospered under his rule and protection. Zeus, regrettably, is the right choice for the job.

Athena is, was, and always will be among other mythology experts and fans the perfect example of an Olympian Leader. Almost every descision made by her was made not by a childish need or succumbing to her sentiments, but because she put a thought to it, unlike Zeus. She is the personification of practical thinking for Gods' sake.
Also i always felt sad about the other olympians. They could never overthow Zeus not because he is the smartest but th STONGEST. That fact will never stop bother me cause it comes in contrast with the most Ancient Greek myths about heroes. Their point was to tell us that power was never too much for practicality and smartness.

I'd beg to differ on how she handled Medusa unjustly. Punish the loyal and faithful servant of yours. That cried out to you for aide. When her lustful and vengeful Uncle Poseidon raped her. As well as openly pursued her beforehand on multiple occasions. Athena did that all over jealousy of Medusa's beauty and cursed her. You'd think that'd be the case with Aphrodite or some other deity, not Athena. She's one of my favorites too but far from an angel/saint. She's proven to be just as manipulative on accounts even against feuds with Ares. I do think Hades had Zeus's number and would've been just as well as Apollo. Him and Athena were by far two the wisest.

I agree with your observation about Zeus being the god fit to rule. My reason is that he (to me) felt the more balanced of the Deities. Poseidon always came across as pretty uninterested in things. Hades came across as a deep thinker, who was focused more on the small things, and tended to only bairly glance at the overall picture. The females tended to be shown pretty similar to both Poseidon or Hades. Possibly Athena could have ruled, but she came later, so was not around "at the beginning" (so to say).

The Greeks hated him because as you say he was a berserker for war and they hated the chaos he brought. However many Greeks, most notably the Spartans, venerated Ares, even above Athena because of his loyalty to his father and his warrior physique. Ares was by no means stupid, just not very clever.

The fact the other gods challenge order AND FAIL is the central meaning of the narrative. The point is that the other gods cannot rule.
