Thought I was going crazy seeing big channels say these are all good changes because "not everyone should be able to go to Worlds". Really makes me reevaluate some of these players' takes. It's not unreasonable to say that Worlds should be exclusive and only the best of the best, but the reality is that these changes won't result in a more "skilled" playerbase at Worlds; it'll just be filled with all the players that had the time and money available to grind out every major event possible. I've seen the argument that "winning at one regional/IC will get you funds for the next regional/IC" but you brought up a really good point about new players getting experience from these events. I don't think someone who's only played for a year should reasonably expect to go to Worlds on their first attempt, but if other people are having to grind out all these events for *their* invites, how can newbies even attend these regionals/ICs for that experience? It becomes a wall.
As a Canadian, it's also extremely difficult to attend many regionals/ICs compared to a player in the US. We only get like 2 regionals a year while the US gets 5x that plus an IC. Even in our own country we have our two regionals on totally opposite sides of the country, so no matter how close you are you'll still need to pay an arm and a leg to go to more than 1 regional at best. Yes, some US players will also need to travel all over to get their CP, but they don't have to deal with international travel or their money being worth 30% less at the majority of the NA events. Yet Canada is grouped with the US even though we have drastically different access to events. With the CP minimums it was still rough but it was at least a stationary target.
I'm a League Owner and Judge more than a player, so a lot of these changes don't affect me directly, but it's disheartening to see players in my region losing motivation. I try to run events that are rewarding even without the CP involved, but this is definitely going to kill a lot of traffic from other cities and provinces.
This change just made every small country player forced to travel 24/7 if you want to qualify for worlds. And even if you do it and stay permanently on top you won't earn enough money to keep doing it. This system only allows wallet warriors to play. Now there's a legitimate wallet diff.
YUP
Won’t it guarantee a smaller worlds , filled with those who have actually won tournaments? Instead of just being like a larger regional , with too many players.
As if competitive pokemon wasn't pay 2 win enough without hacking
I appreciate you making the video, and I’m glad you’ve joined a lot of streamers in sounding the alarm. I’m actually surprised that so many top level players highlight the plight of mid level players first. The idea that you guys genuinely think of us is sincerely appreciated.
All this terrible news has actually felt inspiring. From someone who enjoys competitive circuits, it feels like there’s already a strong core for grassroots scenes to take hold. Limitless has been amazing.
I hope this is the kick we need to start having tournaments that make some noise.
Great comment
I have an FGC backgeound, so the idea of only a very select few players making the end of the year isn't new to me. But those typically have a structured point system that limits the number pf points a player can earn.
Basically, there's 3 kinds of tournaments: locals, challengers, majors. And only your top 2 point results count towards your final score. So say you get like 3rd and 6th at 2 regionals, the only way you can earn more points for a regional at that point would be to place higher than 6th. Its implemented this way specifically so that no one player can just monopolize all thr points and so a player doesn't technically have to go to every regional to qualify.
But if they run next seasons tournaments like they have been under these new rules, it's gonna be a clown show. They have not laid the necessary ground work to function in a way that's fair under this structure.
I’ve never minded the cost of travel to fly around the country to qualify. Makes sense to me too. But it’s required on top of that multiple flights overseas per year and that’s honestly just not viable.
If there's any silver lining we can take from this, it's that Worlds '25 is probably going to be in an unwatchable double restricted format anyway, so it's ok to not bother
TPCI making sure we know that this isn't worth our time
Damn you right
In the same boat similar to you. Recently married, new place and I am a teacher. The amount of time and effort I would even need to try this I would most likely be not hired back for my job on top of losing money just by participating.
ON POINT COMMENTS!
All Casual Players that only are able to play locals and can't get to other countries for Regionals, IC and Specials are practically cut off... it sucks! 😢
Cheers from Panama!
From a marketing POV, I think they want to have the top players who have made a “name” for themselves to come to the majority/all of the regionals (they have to go to basically everything unless they place 1st) as opposed to them going to like only half out of knowing they’ll have enough CP. Cuz then it strengthens their brand, as though these top players are celebs that they wanna consistently highlight in all the VGC streams. This of course is at the expense of new or rising players.
I agree. Seems like every couple seasons TPCI shoots themselves in the foot with a bad rules change.
So as someone who lives in Maine, which has NO scene, and is like 5 hours away from the nearest spot they would ever have a regional (Boston) im not ever planning on competing competitively. Its just not worth the investment for me.
But even if I had ever planned on competing I would never even try now. Its such a waste of time, effort, and money. Im a "mid-bro" or whatever you want to call it. I could maybe 6-3 a regional on a good day.
I can understand why they might want to lower the amount of people who go to worlds. Its not an outrageous idea on its own. But the way they are doing it is frankly ridiculous. They are making it so only people who have the money and time to go to events have a chance. It the way its set up really punishes players who don't go to all the internats. Your better off going to all the internats and 3 regionals then you are staying in your home country and grinding out points like that.
Idk man. I agree this isn't really good and it'll kill off the new players looking to get into the scene, which is the lifeblood of a community. You can't always cater to the top .1% of players and expect it to grow.
I almost think they resent having a competitive scene and would prefer if people just play casually. I know smash bros players have dealt with animosity from Nintendo over the comp scene, and tpci has at least some input from Nintendo.
Hopefully this will maybe grow the grassroots scene for people searching for an outlet to play competitive that don't have the time, money, and resources to dedicate to being a full time vgc pro.
But I fear it'll actually kill that scene. Which is a shame. Pokemon is one of the biggest video games, and the biggest media franchise ever. VGC should be absolutely massive as a competitive format. Like one of the biggest on the planet, but they keep on making decisions that hamstring it and crush any sort of growth in new players.
Really sad to hear these changes.
Also thank you for using your platform to express discontent with this. Really appreciate you speaking up for the newer player. Great video
You hit on all the right points here. Sorry to hear there are no big events near you! Hopefully there might be one in ther second part of the season!
@@THATSAplusONE I hope so too. The closest I've seen recently is Hartford, which is like 7ish (maybe more if traffic is bad) hours away. Boston is the only place of any size that's closer.
Its a smaller state so I don't really expect anything closer. Portland in southern Maine is a trendy city so there is a fringe chance a regional could pop up there, but its unlikely.
Especially with the changes to who is allowed to run locals. I can't see any locals ever popping up around here
I wouldn't ever try to compete to get to worlds living where I do, but now even if something does pop up close by all the bigger players will be signing up to go to these events to get their points. So I may not even be able to go if it did happen.
Such is life I guess lol.
The only guy I've found who's actually explained how bad this situation is. Competing in Dortmund this month as my first regional, it's gonna be full of so many sweaty players
Good luck!
Of all companies they should finance players so much more, it'd foster interesting competition even more with skilled players who don't have deep pockets... They're literally printing money, they can 1000% do it. Some much smaller scenes do it, there's 0 reason they can't.
They actually do. The top players that could already afford it are the ones that get sent out for free.
Taking this time to be honest makes you the goat in my book
I tried my best!
While i agree this change is tragic for every semi-competitive person, it's surprising to me how people don't see why this is happening. Too many people play this game. The horror stories that came out of worlds last year prove that they can't facilitate that many players so they have to put a limit on things.
Ok but. This doesnt stop people from playing at the regional and international level. It makes it almost a requirement to play all of them. Sure Worlds will be smaller. But every other event will be full to the gills and people will miss invites from not being able to get into the tournaments!
@@THATSAplusONE I get that its not a perfect solution, but like you said in the video, regionals and such aren't hosted by the pokemon company, so it's less of "their problem" if they are overfull. I can't speak for the sign up system as i have never attended such an event, but as far as participation is concerned, something like this had to happen eventually. And if this somehow doesn't gut the player base, i wouldn't be surprised if a similar system gets implemented at a regional level.
this shit is insane, cannot imagine anyone new choosing to seriously play pokemon competitively after this unless they have infinite money and time
Yeah it’s really bad
As someone that can and does blow my money any way I want and can afford to go to every tourney in the country, I can say for sure, you’re right about this.
Resources aside, you still need to find a way to be in the best of the best 75 players in the world.
My question to you, how ever is, what number is the right number? There has to be a line some where. They can’t host a tourney in a timely manner if every one in the country participates. Is it half the country? Is it 200? 2000? I think you can agree there needs to be a cap.
That’s the issue! They are basically making it a requirement to play in most regionals and all 3 ICs but all the events have a limit cap that’s set way too low for the current player base.
As someone who watched worlds and was inspired to give the game a serious shot this is really heart breaking. People love to prop jesse parker up saying "hes just your average man working an average job and he made it to worlds" but under these new rules even he probably wouldn't even qualify.
24th,36th, 60th, 2nd,5th,22nd,27th. - All his regional placings plus 235th as NAIC and now hes number 3 in the world but with those stats he wouldnt have qualified in 2025 from what i've understand from your video.
Which thats just mind blowing the new rules would kick out your top 3rd highest player cause they are just that strict.
Back to my first line idk if i'm gonna bother participating now IRL, its like whats the point when i can just play online and not waste all my time , money , and energy,
I’m with you. No point if you can get the same experience online for free lol
@@THATSAplusONE Exactly! Also a follow up i just learned the season reset in July not at August at the end of worlds like everyone online says in their videos. so if you see worlds and want to try for next year your already at a 2 month defecit of events ...
like looking at the points top points are already at 250+ like how the hell is a new player supposed to make that difference up on top of going to all the big events.
The GOOD news about that is they are getting points from events that have low BFLs. You could actually catch up on that quite easily because once they cap their limit they stop going. But I feel you its disheartening.
The goal is to win a Regional or top 4 an International. Even though I never even made day 2, this is more realistic to me than being in the top 75.
Edit: I get it from a planning perspective. Now they have like 350 players participating. With the current system there is no way for them to know how many people attend.
Feels like it haha
Need more online tournaments and that would help.
I talked about that on the Twitch vod. I dont think it would help as they wouldnt be official events.
Too many online tournaments make the meta evolve too fast
The UK doesn't get tournaments so any UK player will need to spend a fortune travelling to every tournament.
Add the amount of players who hack their way to a win and this is just rediculous.
The changes are just insane! ICs are broken af, I can understand wanting less players but 75 is crazy. Should've been 100-125 or just make the CP bar 650-700. The local scene just downright killed due to the TO changes to make it more like TCG. Overall very disappointed. My only hope is they uncombine ICs and Regional BFL, nerf IC points and increase the invite to 100. That would be my take
If they made those changes id be fine with it too
I agree with everything your saying this is a big L for VGC its been going downhill for awhile
the lack of prize money has always held back VGC
Only 125 invites, and I wonder how many are going to be disqualified for using genned mons
Its only 75. 125 is for TCG
After my first year of vgc im trying tcg this year we barely have any locals in my area for vgc and its so much harder to play and get good even though i got top 32 at a regional this year also way more locals for tcg so more practice
Good luck! TCG is fun and in a better place than VGC!
@THATSAplusONE as a former magic player I understand it more too I don't have to make reads every turn or lose the game. Honestly single restricted is what's makong me take a break too I hate it so much make one wrong move lose the whole game
I feel the same way
Someone just showed that theyve seen everyones feedback on the new changes on twitter. So lets see if theyll do something about it
Maybe in like 3 years. This seasons stuff has already been sent
Do you have a link to that?
It’s still not too late to change BFLs. They won’t, but it’s not too late
Its too late for 2025. Once that stuff gets published its locked up. TPCI doesnt really backpedal like that as it would really confuse people that only saw the first msg. Best we can hope for is 2026 they get back on track.
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this and totally agree. I really hope you win Worlds this year.
This is why I never bothered going to any tourneys because I realized if I wanted to take it seriously I'd need to burn through a lot of money, and it just doesn't seem worth it. The prizes aren't even that good compared to other game tourneys.
been a long time pokemon fan since gen 1/gen2 ish. Been slowly more into cpmpetitive since theyve made it easier to get perfect ivs and wanted to try some regionals at some point but after hearing this imma just stick to online battling i guess. love the videos
It’s a good thing you got the goal this year and can just enjoy your year next without needing to get sweaty.
Quick question: which way would be easier to qualify for a 2025 invite?
Grind next year’s circuit?
Or get top 4 at this year’s worlds for the automatic invite?
As a new vgc player these rules are getting too much. I just can't catch up to someone who's been playing since 2015 or earlier so I've given up on ever getting to worlds level. I don't have the time or money to play this game to that level so I've decided to stick to going to just the EUIC for the experience and exclusive merch. Other than that other tournaments just not worth it
Thats completely fine. Good luck at the few events you plan on playing!
All they had to do was add *only top IC and top 3-5 regional placements count -- for the people that can't afford to go to everything or just don't get into the lottery for a spot
I agree!
My hope was that a little “1” just shows up at the BFL over IC.
Even then, you still need to go to multiple tho. What if you plan to go to NAIC, and just don’t get in. Or bomb?
Even in that scenario you probably need to get top 128 or even top 64 at an IC, which most people would probably need multiple chances at.
The point is if you can't go to 1 you'd have the option to go to another if they limited results that count towards your total for ranking. As it is now if you can't go to 1 you miss out big time to the people that can. And it doesn't matter what the reason you couldn't go was.
@@Pikatrainer2 true. It would be a massive improvement.
Gotta understand that having celebrity players (who do well enough to win the biggest prize money and basically live off the game) promote GameFreak's game competitively, and inspiring people around the world to own the game, own other games to get the pokemon they need, and to keep playing to live up to those examples they constantly see in tournaments.... makes GameFreak big fat dirty rich money. Oh yes... whenever companies make such decisions, it's often a business decision.
Norcal scene won't let their locals dry up. We just got it buffed up.
Just to clarify, how do people cheat in online tournaments? Is it Pokémon that are hacked or something worse?
Its more match fixing and manipulating points for top cut and stuff like that.
Only had to watch the first 16 mins of your video and am now more inspired and emboldened then ever to build a competitive rouge team not to try and advance in VGC but to try and beat the VGC Meta Teams using the mons I like and vibe with and if I’m really lucky do so in a pubic setting like a Regionals (in a city near me). I’ve done it plenty of times in SV Ranked already and Cause many forfeits and rage quits from those players. It’s like standing up to bully’s and it’s so satisfying to take them down.
Hell yeah! You have my support!
I don't understand how you are incentivized to go to ALL of the events when the BFL exists. Its not like you can out grind somebody with points, you have to outplay them to get the invite.
Maybe im missing something? If someone could please clarify for me
The BFL stands for Best Finish Limit. So unless you are getting 1st at every event you basically need to fill it with as many top cuts as you possibly can. Because thats what everyone does. You dont just go to 6 and call it a day.
@@THATSAplusONE but couldn't you already do that? You said you went to 30+ events to get your invite. This makes it so that someone can go to only 6 and get a Worlds invite. Sure, you can go to all the tournaments to min/max your BFL but you have to play well to get in, it's not like you can just pay your way to more tournaments than the next guy and get a World Championship invite.
If you can top cut 6 events in a row you are better than Wolfe Glick. It just doesnt happen in a row like that.
@@THATSAplusONE You think it will take 6 top cuts to be top 75? I'm not sure the math works out on that, but if someone top cuts 6 events then they deserve a shot at becoming World Champion more than the guy who paid their way to more tournaments.
Keep in mind that every time someone like Wolfe Glicke wins a Regional or top 4s an IC they win themselves out of the 75.
You only have to min/max your BFL if you are one of the sweatiest players in the world but that's on you if you want to do that. The only issue I see is how the ICs count - there should be a limit of 1 to your BFL.
I agree that if ICs were 1 the system would make a lot more sense
Literally just sat up a local and right after the first event they said nope you need a card shop... ffs. Oh well what are you gonna do. I'm lucky with I can attend a bunch of regionals, im going to make a push for worlds, if I suck guess I'll give up halfway
I have always played for enjoyment so this isn't big for me but it defo will affect player counts. It's so bad for the top players that are invested in their worlds invites. My last local I brat a top player and I couldn't help but feel I was just robbing their worlds invite of them cause they are invested and I just attend for enjoyment. It just feels horrible at the moment
I used to love VGC, wanted to go to the events, wanted to make it to worlds.
Glad I saw this, thank you.
Friendship ended with VGC? But there is no way this lasts, I do not see a chance this lives past a year, MAYBE 2
Honestly VGC will never die. We have been given WAAAAAAY worse formats than this. TPCI just bleeds its userbase dry right before a new Gen like they always do. They are just waiting for the surge of new players that dont know how bad it is to take over lol
This might be because im from a different community but i don't see the issue with the ability to participate in the world tourney be invite only. I'm confused as to if you are even able to spectate. If you can't even spectate that's kinda dumb (ticket sales, merch, etc.). Also confused about signing up. the rule sheet makes it look like it can be like 2k+ people. just a little confused. all the vids i've seen about this assume we all know about the process. That said, if the world tourney is invite only the prize pool should be WAY bigger.
We have 12,496 TCG masters, and 2,305 VG masters according to leaderboards.
I always though the system should be invites all the way to the top. For example top 4 of every regional should get an invite to worlds. But you also need to have an invite to each regional. The way you get an invite is by showing up and competing at the premiere challenges and other locals, this way you can't just fly across the world to steal a local players spot in a tournament. Well I guess you can but the local players, should have priority spots for their own regionals. Worlds should be the only tournament that is required to travel to.
I wonder. Why do you not find locals fun? I am not in a position to be chasing points for worlds because I am a new player, but I want to attend locals for fun. Its a place for a bunch of people with a similar interest to go and play a game together? Does the entry fee make it not fun? or the fact that its bo1 OTS compared to bo1 ladder that you normally play?
In my mind (as a new player with 0 cp to my name) I think if the locals have less top players and are a bit more fun then its good for the scene? Sorry if my opinion disagrees with yours. I understand that it ruins people outside the top 75 in NA from making worlds. :(
Near the end of the video you say that you don't like vgc and you don't like going to regionals. If this is the case, why is the goal to make it to worlds? I want to ask this to the other players in my local area too. Yes the CP system and worlds qualification is gutted and made worse, but why is that the goal? I can see it for you because you could cook up a team to take the meta off guard and potentially win it. But for many in my locals they just copy balance teams or trick room teams nothing that unique. So are they really going to out balance wolfe glick? I think probably not. So whats their motivation for getting to worlds?
Locals have actually been Bo3 OTS with a top cut last season, but thats not why I dont like them. I know its going to sound weird from a channel that makes VGC content but I really just dont like doubles. Im a singles player if anything and Having to take time on the weekends to go grind a format im not a fan of is just a pain.
If you enjoy the game and want to play in locals I really think you should do it. They are a lot of fun for most people but for me it ends up being more stressful than fun so they really arent my jam.
The one and only reason I made a goal for worlds this year is because making VGC content is my day job. Not everyone likes their job but this is what im good at so I just roll with it. I wanted my worlds invite as sort of a "diploma" of sorts that puts a stamp on my content that says I know what im talking about. I could honestly care less about winning or losing at worlds.
As for why others that just copy teams play? I have no idea. Seems like a waste of time to just copy something and play it worse than the person who made it but thats just my opinion.
@@THATSAplusONElooking forward to all the fun content next year
@@THATSAplusONE thankyou for the insight. I think the new format forces people to ask themselves why they play. If people that don't find it truly fun stop playing as much(and save themselves lots of time and money) then that's a good outcome for them imo. I'm personally going to compete in a few locals when I can, and maybe my local regional again.
Thanks!
i would say it would be cause they would make more money but theres still a cap in attendance if they uncapped attendance then sure i get it its a money play but pokemon net worth is more than disney marvel and dbz combined so like i dont fucking get it bro this makes 0 sense. Major L for someone who just started vgc cirtcuit this past year
It's a mayor L for anyone that doesn't have money to go to regionals every weekend
Its the international flights that turn me away
I mean you can still play for fun. But as I said it seems kinda pointless right?
@@THATSAplusONE dude you ain’t lying bro like yeah still will go to my local regional for fun of course but like refuse to travel now
Also sick stuff on the patreon btw had to drop the sub 🤙
Yesh, and I never even competed in one of these before. Now it's basically a guarantee I'll never get to those super high levels.
I’ve seen this trend among other games as well. The player base grows so large that there are large numbers of people who either make a living playing the game for 8 hours a day or they’re super popular content creators and the companies bend to their will. You end up with rules and gameplay changes that cater to the super try hards and leave the casual players in the dust. It’s why I can’t play 2k basketball online anymore
This comment sums up the vid 100% I fully agree.
The funny thing?
They didn’t even throw those guys a bone! They didn’t even increase the payouts! $
Even people who want to do this as a job (going to everything and winning prize money) are signing up for a job that would barely cut them a profit even if they’re great.
If they wanna make a hardcore circuit. Pay like a hardcore circuit
Holyyy, bro u are preachingg man
I think I’m a start playing vgc right now
It really seems counter-intuitive for TPCI to shrink the events vs expand them. It's completely bonker that even top performing players on the world stage won't break even with cost and time. I envision a world where Pokémon is a more legitimate e-sport and it TOTALLY has the world-loved IP to do it... only has itself holding it back.
I was going to grind 2025 since I started last may but I might just drop Pokemon all together

I get it , an understand but as long as u go to one regional u have a puncher's chance, personally i come from poverty so ive never had the resources but like i can play the game at a high level, so i would think the goal is to win a regional not chase points and get the invite, if u don't get it yea sux but at least u did ur best
A punchers chance is too high imo. Players that can only go to one event aren’t used to to schedule and other things that happen at regionals. There are a lot of internal politics that keep the top players on top that you don’t see at home. You would have a better shot winning the lottery.

All these channels complaining about Worlds Invites which while valid, completely misses the whole leagues aspect. I know my community got destroyed because VGC has to be at card shops now and card shops see VGC as a waste of time and space..
I talked about that. Its lame

Care to elaborate? It’s been a while since I’ve been apart if the Yugioh scene
Its Don-dover😔

Have some respect for yourself lol
??? I had a regular stream planned and then this news dropped right before I went live so I was asked to cover it.
@THATSAplusONE I watched your video and thought it was very useful and informative.
As a semi-casual who didn't fully understand how pokemon tourneys work, I found it to be very clear and informative but also disappointing bc it means I probably won't be able to compete. I have to work, I have kids and travel are all soft barriers that become solid when combined.
Regardless, I think what you said is important info for anybody that may be considering competition like I was. It's better to know now, than learn about it once you already made a commitment to it, which would be even more disappointing. Also, if changes are to be made down the road to fix some of these issues, the sooner the fan base knows the better chance we have of making it more inclusive to newer competitors.
I appreciated this video and the news update.
Thank you for hearing me out! Sorry it doesnt sounds like its the right fit for you I dont blame you at all

If you feel you need to boycott, make the best damn lugia team there ever was and go win with it.
And when you win, you get a platform.
Then you can slam these ridiculous changes live.
(And then they’ll cut scene and blackout you out and then you can just go as a spectator to see your friends next year and not have to feel bad about not playing).
Basically- the changes suck. Boycott next year.
We’re rooting for you so hard at worlds and can’t wait to see what you cook
