Even a 'bad' review is promotion because it's still exposure. Did you miss the people in this comment section who have stated that they've explicitly ordered these cables because of this video? Your fairness to the product - being able to still recommend them as a budget option despite their abysmal colour reproduction, 16:9 video distortion and ridiculous level of additional lag (their most critical flaw IMO and the one entirely unmentioned in the video) leaves you open to accusations of shilling and / or quickly cranking out a video without actually properly testing gameplay.

Disappointing release, I'll be passing on this like I did with the PS1/PS2 cable. Forcing a stretched aspect ratio will turn off many people, and that color inaccuracy is horrible. Not cool when it's causing issues with seeing basic points of gameplay, like a few of the examples shown in here. If Pound is aware of the issue they really should hold off on this cable and release it once this issue is fixed, not release it in the current state and possibly fix it in a later revision. Either way, thanks for the review on this! On another note - you can pull a sharper image natively from SNES hardware if you get your hands on a SNES Jr. and RGB mod it, in conjunction with a cable like this.
To be fair here I like the enhanced "REDS" to me it bought out details that I have never noticed before and also enhanced some features that look way better. I don't mind using my TV to change the aspect ratio which I'm sure is not a big deal for most people.
@@DiZZiEntertainment On the flip side it also makes darker games much harder to see. At the end of the day people play on original hardware for compatibility and accuracy. A messed up color palette and stretched aspect ratio is not what many users are after if they're playing on original hardware.

I can understand about the color palette issue but majority of the complaints can be resolved from basically 99.9% of the consumers knowing how to operate their televisions.
Not only is it saturated and reds are high, but it looks like it has a smoothing effect applied. With the Analogue you can see the pixels and corners perfectly. Everything with this cable seems to smooth out the edges, which purists will not like. If your a casual owner that just wants to connect an old SNES to a modern set, this is fine for the price I guess. Best way to play is an Analogue system and/or a SNES with the scart/upscaler solution, but both are in the hundreds of dollars.
Honestly, this is exactly what I need. My dad's been wanting an Snes for a while and he's not as picky about image quality as I am, and this will work for him. Thanks!
Does ANYONE actually prefer playing retro games stretched? Is filling out the entire screen really so important that it's worth making the game look significantly worse?
I see a lot of people playing games stretched. I don't think they notice or understand the difference. For me, aspect ratio is the most important thing. It has to look the way it was intended. I think the reason it's not scaling to 4:3 is because it would take more logic and processing on the hdmi adapter itself. Luckily as MJR states, nearly all TVs have an option to switch between 16:9 and 4:3.
years ago when not all tv stations had 16:9 ratio but all lcds were 16:9 i've seen many people keeping their tvs with the image stretched. i asked and some didn't understand the difference, others said "why keep the screen space not used on the sides?". so... stretched is just dumb
Honestly playing retro games stretched doesn't really bother me. For some reason having big black bars on both sides on my screen bothers me more lol. Once you get used to having a full screen, it looks weird going back to 4:3
Definitely not a fail, you are in the minority. Most, if not all (STATISTICALLY), common consumers want their television to be filled with no black borders.

Checked Lamborghini on my US SNES through a calibrated Sony BVM using RGB. Red levels are higher than your composite, a little higher than the Analogue, but nothing as saturated like the Pound. The car is more red, but the background still retains the yellow.
Honestly as long as you dont go bigger then like 28-32inch 720p hdmi tv with comp to hdmi converter picture looks fine with less pixel stretching then a 50 inch 1080p or 4k. Havent tryed it but if you run 720p or 1080p signels through your xbox one s or x it upscales the picture to 4k those older games may look amazing On a big 4k doing it with your nintendo switxh gives your switch games anti-aliasing and improves vision distance some. Dont know how micro got the signel passing through the xbox but im sure its running through the cpu and makes the xbox at least a very bad ass scaler.
I do want to mention this to you, there were many low budget home owners that didn't have TV's with AV connectors and when the SNES first came out, the AV cables were sold separate and came with an RF Switch instead. So many of them used an RF Switch instead because AV CRTVs were a bit more expensive at the time of the SNES' release. I think later as the AV CRTVs went down in price is when Nintendo opt out the RF Switch and started selling the AV cables with them as the AV CRTVs were getting more popular.
Im so glad that you review these products you show off for us! I really enjoy your honesty and time you put into your videos man! It prolly took a while for you to get gameplay with every single different cable/option. Looks like such an awesome idea, 30$ really isnt bad. Although I'd rather have one for the N64.
The color inaccuracy is a deal breaker for me, although I could definitely see people who may not notice it or simply not care. It really comes down to the games in question. For example, I thought that the Super Mario World footage looked quite good but others look way too dark. For me, the stretched 16:9 out of the box is not an issue. I have a Sony Bravia 50", three ASUS 24" monitors and an old 720p LG that is pushing 12 years that all have an option to set the picture format to 4:3 or 16:9. To be honest, I have never found a HDTV that didn't have this option available (that's not to say they don't exist).
Well, relative to other options like analogue nt, framemeister upscaler or ossc, this is actually a much cheaper option by far. But it’s just that. An option.

the output colors of pound cable actually look like the colors on the Sharp CRT i'm using right now. tv has different colors back then,my grandma's tv used to look green-ish...maybe the designers of this cable used the same Sharp Tv im using now as color reference?but not having 4:3 support is a bummer tho

Using a decent upscaler like the FrameMeister or OSSC on a modern TV looks just as good in my opinion. In fact if you are in the US and thus can't access RGB from your consoles via most CRT televisions, it actually looks a lot better than it ever could on an old consumer grade CRT.
@@subzero8679 Really? I've had mine for 2 years or so, use it pretty much every day and it's never given me any trouble. It just gives me amazing picture quality that rivals that of a PVM with minimal lag and great flexibility / customisability. It also has excellent compatibility with televisions unlike some of the other scalers on the market which simply line multiply and can produce an "of spec" image that some TV's simply aren't capable of understanding.
If you can have one it is good. But in my opinion having a flat, big TV that weighs less then 50kg is a hell of an advantage. I just can't put a (useab) 150kg TV that is like half a Meter or even more in depth in my room. And that it is barely 40"
Framemeister and RGB Cables are still one of the best solutions for many consoles. By myself i have an Automaticlly RGB Scart Switcher (8-Port) hooked up to the Framemeister and all consoles have RGB Cables, its not cheap but its worth it. But for 30$ its not that bad and u can adjust your tv too look it better.
Smartest thing I did was get a bunch of rgb scart cables for most of my Retro systems. I have a rgb switch box from Amazon and i have my snes, genesis and neo geo aes connected to a trinitron with the switch box allowing me to swap between them.
THIS. This is way more important than saturated colors to me. I want to know if this is going to be a viable alternative to my mammoth CRT tv in terms of input lag.
Most upscalers will add lag unfortunately and this one does a bit, but I didn't find games unplayable with the 30 or so games I tried. It's also important to put your HDTV in GAME MODE so it doesn't add unnecessary video processing on top of that.
You get what you pay for. Just look at the game text when MJR compares composite, analog NT & pound cable, the analog NT blows them out of the water. Stick with professionally made products such as the analog NT, HDMI console mods or high quality RGB cables with a CRT.
Cables like these are perfect for those retro gamers that don't care about video and audio quality, lag, correct colors, artifacts, etc. and there are surprisingly a whole bunch of them. I know a few that for the sake of simplicity, plug all their systems including PS3 and XBOX 360 to a composite switch box plugged to their LCD HDTV, and they are happy playing it just like that. Once I even felt so bad for this one friend of mine, that I gave him a 20 inch Sony Trinitron in excellent shape, it had composite and component inputs, I calibrated the convergence on it, told him he should at least play his old systems the way they were meant to be played on a CRT. A few weeks later I go visit him, and notice his NES looks like crap on the CRT, I look behind and yup he used the RF cable.
They won't work with NTSC N64 and GC because those don't output RGB, but they might work with the PAL GC because it does have native RGB support, but them the cable might not support 480i output
Well, SNES does not seem to have widescreen games. The PlayStation does have widescreen games, like Touge Max, Bloody Roar II, Wip3out and PAC-MAN WORLD, so that’s why the Pound HDMI adapter for the latter stretches the screen in the 720p space.
If you are wanting quality on a budget, better to get the Retrotink. However, just like the Retrotink, if this cable existed a few years ago when I started collecting retro games, I probably would have went with it and been happy with it, and just adjusted my TV settings. Now that I am running Framemeister, retrotink, and HD Retrovision cables, no way I would go with this.
Being born in 87’ the SNES is my childhood console. We didn’t have much money and the games were very expensive so one way we played different games was by sharing and borrowing games from neighbors and vice versa. I would go over to my friends homes and play for hours and then we would take a break and went outside to play. You don’t see this happen anymore. Man how the years went by...
You can see the issue with the reds in their example screenshots on their website although it isn't as obvious due to the fact that those shots don't actually have much red/orange in them in general however if you compare those sections alone they do look more saturated than they should while the rest of the image looks fine.
Great review, thanks for doing it. It seems like people could probably overcome most of the issues with some tweaks to TV picture settings, which would make this a very affordable option (IMO).
Three problems with these cables: 1) 16:9 out of the box is an awful decision. Even more so if there’s no 4:3 option. 2) You shouldn’t have to change the color & saturation settings on your television/capture card to accommodate for a new cable. 3) Due to #2 the components used in the cable should be suspect to be of very cheap quality. This is pretty on par for a Chinese cash grab towards the retro community, and I would advise people spend a few more bucks for a better solution (HD Retrovision Cables, OSSC, Super NT) if they are looking to spend on their SNES retro set up.
I think i'll stick with my SNES RGB Scart cable thanks. Real scan lines and perfect colours on my Trinitron. Can't help wondering if these Pound devices are just nicer packaged re-badges of the very similar looking ones you can get from China, I got a PS2 HDMI one for $5 on Ali Express which works fine
I wish you would do comparisons between Svideo and HDMI. I was lucky enough to have an Svideo cable for my SNES back in August 1991 and a nice Svideo compatible CRT. The Svideo (Y/C) cable gets rid of the color bleeding and crosshatch effect, even on a modern HDTV.
I never play my older games stretched. I play my old games from NES-PS2 era on my 1080p television and I put the screen at the smallest ratio and honestly even with composite video my games look fantastic.
Just like the PS2/1 cable from Pound, they screwed the pooch on this one. I have the Xbox (I think the revised one) and Dreamcast cables and they are actually really good. No stretching at all, extremely good video quality and they work without plugging in USB power.
I have heard that they have worked on updated firmware for these cables, hopefully they have fixed some of these issues, specially the color inaccuracy and lag. And a 4:3 aspect ratio sure would be nice. Doubt there's a ton they can do though with the crappy Chinese chip set they are using.
When you play these old games on a newer TV make sure to up the sharpness that should help with the blurry text. They need to fix the reds in this HDMI kit and I also agree they should not be out putting in 16:9 ratio.

I bought it nonetheless and i gotta say i'm impressed, video quality is pretty great and color saturation is not so severe. The output is 4:3, even when the TV is set to 16:9, i was definitely not expecting that

DrLite because that’s how the games were originally intended to look. They looked blurry due to the limitations of televisions at the time, not because they games were designed to look bad. These new hookups allow you to see the games the way they were designed.
A little? You're being too kind, MJR :) This looks over saturated to me. I would also have concerns about input lag. I know your tv has influence on this, but I can only imagine the Pound making it worse. For $30 this would be okay for someone who doesn't know better.
I still have my SNES hooked up to a CRT and was looking at getting the HD retrovision component cables for it. But I was waiting to see if pound released an HDMI to hook it up to a newer tv. After seeing this, I think I’m gonna stick with the CRT for now and pick up the retrovision cables
I don't understand why all of these hardware manufacturers stretch the image by default. Sure you want to maximize that real estate on the screen, but not at the cost of stretched pixels. At least give people the option (using a workaround on a TV shouldn't count). Also, manually playing around with the RGB values is a royal pain if you're using your TV for anything other than the console. I guess if your TV allows you to save color profiles it's alright, but still really annoying. For $30 I think the price is alright, but I'd personally wait for a second revision where the key issues are fixed.
Pound cables really aren't very good, they're okay for people just want something cheap and convenient but there are VASTLY superior options out there for using retro consoles with modern televisions. God knows why they intentionally stretch 4:3 content to 16:9, looks bloody terrible and there are some TV's out there that do not feature the option to manually change the aspect ratio back. If they insist on stretching it by default, they should at least build in a switch that allows you to change back to the original aspect ratio.

I appreciate the side by side comparisons. It allows the consumer to see it for themselves. Personally, I dont think it is a bad idea to get and seems as a fair price.
honestly an easy fix is to just turn down the saturation on your tv. cause most if not all tvs, including hd tvs, allow you to change the picture on your tv.
The pound cable looks terrible. Wrong colors, 16:3 default stretch, and I've seen more detailed screencaps from other console Pound cables showing they don't even output clean pixel edges. It's shoddily made garbage. Would not recommend them to anyone as it would be sociopathic to do so.

DrQuinMagna aspect ratio aside, this thing is noisy and soft as hell. It's absolutely not worth getting when you could save up and get a proper upscaler like the Framemeister or line doubler like the OSSC.
@@GreenPintoMedia Noise isn't really an issue for my setup. I have a custom built cabinet that cancels out nearly all my systems noises. Mainly built it for an old AMD phenom system I kept inside it. But I look mainly for picture quality. 30 bucks ain't bad in my situation.
I have the PS2 pound cable and i've heard signal noise in my playthrough when i stream and record on a Elgato HD 60 Pro. I've used my power strip USB port and a rechargeable power brick and it's still present. I can't say if the SNES cable here has signal noise but it being affordable i can't deny this is true i mean come on... 20-30$... weigh your options.
I have a few of these pound cables myself and the main thing I have noticed is that they are pretty inconsistent when it comes to image quality. They are great solutions for the vintage gamer with a modest budget but there are better solutions to be found.
The over saturation of the red isn't a deal breaker for me. I think this is a cool device to get an original SNES playable on modern TVs. For someone who is more of a perfectionist with their retro gaming set up I can see why this would not be ideal. I have a friend who has a SNES they bought a while ago and this would be right up there alley. They're not trying to have the perfect video set up for it.... they just wanna be able to play their old games on their new TVs.
This cable is a disappointment but some people want to play their original carts on original hardware on their modern day TV. If a cable is made that gets the picture right many people will be really happy to have another option.
I'm hesitant as well, I haven't looked at every smart TV on the market but my LG 4k accepts RCA cables, seems a bit pointless unless you are into stretched out screens and don't know how to do it yourself through the settings. Now if someone magic-ed an F connector to HDMI I'd be all over that, because it means both my Coleco and Atari 7800 can be hooked up to a HDMI splitter.
For myself playing on my Sony Trinitron CRT with S-Video cables in correct 4:3 aspect ratio is all I ever need. I have a nice Nes/Snes Hdmi Raspberry PI and still find myself going back to playing on on the Trinitron.
Man, for reviews like this.. really need to show what the comparison is between an ideal solution vs this budget solution. No one uses composite with Framemeister, so that misleading advertising by Pound should be ignored. Notice Pound doesn't mention the OSSC, which is faster than the Framemeister at less than half the price. Compare RGB+Framemeister or SCART/Component+OSSC for a *REAL* comparison. The HD Retrovision component cables are around $63, and paired with the OSSC, it's at pure RGB-level of quality with almost zero lag introduced, unlike the Framemeister or Pound. The OSSC can be built for around $100, or buy it for around $150-175 if you can't solder, but that's a one-time cost to support all retro consoles from one device, unlike a cable. I use the OSSC for over a dozen consoles, so that's around $8-10 per console plus the $63 for HD Retrovision. $73 to have the SNES look *perfect* with nearly zero additional lag compared to $30 for cables that introduce a lot of lag, have over-saturated colors, and make me want to put on glasses to try to sharpen how blurry the game looks.. no thanks.. just use a $12 composite-to-HDMI converter if you just want to play on modern TVs on a budget.

Very fond memories of lamborghini american challenge i played it alot when i still had a snes , i remember it being one of the harder games to beat that i owned love the soundtrack too.
Am I alone here? I think it makes the colors pop more and actually looks better. Depending on the game. That space mega force clip looks awesome. Remember, you can always adjust your colors and contrast etc on your tv. But for the price it’s better than some of these other cheap jack rips

I saw LRG announce this and hoped you had a review up - and my prayers were answered! I like the idea here but I already have a Retron for when I need to record SNES footage and I personally don’t mind the muddiness of old fashioned composite. Maybe a good compromise for someone on a budget though!

@@Thunderbolt5827 Buying a SNES Classic is actually a great idea for someone considering burning $30 on probably the worst SNES cable on the market. It's, what $60-70 but you get pretty accurate low lag SNES emulation at the same 720p resolution and the hacking software is versatile, easy to use and mature. I'm about real hardware in most cases but the SNES Classic will clearly give you a more authentic solution than the insultingly bad experience the Pound cable provides.
If you don't like the colors or the lighting, contrast, etc. you can always customize those settings and save them on most modern TV's and call up the saved settings when gaming. DUH!

OSSC, good component cables, framemeister, FPGA replica of real consoles, good HDMI solutions, not this crap converter. Man, please, stop advertising this crap and tell people about good products! MJR this channel is going downhill. 1. Doesn't call out obvious crap anymore, I suspect because you are afraid they still stop sending stuff. 2. Videos are always exactly 10min and few seconds for ad revenue while most is filler talk. 3. "Testing" a product should be more than listing the few functions something has. Tell me if I should continue.
SNES has the same output plug that N64 and Gamecube had. I wish he tested what the Pound cable did in those consoles as well. Also, whenever someone is testing an upscaler I expect an analysis of any lag it may or may not introduce.
Please tell me what I didn't call out in this video? I think my review said all the pros and cons and was fair for the $30 price point. Notice I included the Analogue Super NT for those that want perfection. As for video length...this video was originally longer with 30 games tested, but that seemed like overkill...so I cut it down.

Best way to play is an Analogue system and/or a SNES with the scart/upscaler solution, but both are in the hundreds of dollars.

Does ANYONE actually prefer playing retro games stretched? Is filling out the entire screen really so important that it's worth making the game look significantly worse?
I see a lot of people playing games stretched. I don't think they notice or understand the difference. For me, aspect ratio is the most important thing. It has to look the way it was intended. I think the reason it's not scaling to 4:3 is because it would take more logic and processing on the hdmi adapter itself. Luckily as MJR states, nearly all TVs have an option to switch between 16:9 and 4:3.
When i wanna play hd i usually play my snes or nes mini. I prefer most gaming on crts
years ago when not all tv stations had 16:9 ratio but all lcds were 16:9 i've seen many people keeping their tvs with the image stretched. i asked and some didn't understand the difference, others said "why keep the screen space not used on the sides?". so... stretched is just dumb

Honestly playing retro games stretched doesn't really bother me. For some reason having big black bars on both sides on my screen bothers me more lol. Once you get used to having a full screen, it looks weird going back to 4:3

Checked Lamborghini on my US SNES through a calibrated Sony BVM using RGB. Red levels are higher than your composite, a little higher than the Analogue, but nothing as saturated like the Pound. The car is more red, but the background still retains the yellow.

Honestly as long as you dont go bigger then like 28-32inch 720p hdmi tv with comp to hdmi converter picture looks fine with less pixel stretching then a 50 inch 1080p or 4k. Havent tryed it but if you run 720p or 1080p signels through your xbox one s or x it upscales the picture to 4k those older games may look amazing On a big 4k doing it with your nintendo switxh gives your switch games anti-aliasing and improves vision distance some. Dont know how micro got the signel passing through the xbox but im sure its running through the cpu and makes the xbox at least a very bad ass scaler.

I do want to mention this to you, there were many low budget home owners that didn't have TV's with AV connectors and when the SNES first came out, the AV cables were sold separate and came with an RF Switch instead. So many of them used an RF Switch instead because AV CRTVs were a bit more expensive at the time of the SNES' release. I think later as the AV CRTVs went down in price is when Nintendo opt out the RF Switch and started selling the AV cables with them as the AV CRTVs were getting more popular.

It prolly took a while for you to get gameplay with every single different cable/option. Looks like such an awesome idea, 30$ really isnt bad. Although I'd rather have one for the N64.
The color inaccuracy is a deal breaker for me, although I could definitely see people who may not notice it or simply not care. It really comes down to the games in question. For example, I thought that the Super Mario World footage looked quite good but others look way too dark. For me, the stretched 16:9 out of the box is not an issue. I have a Sony Bravia 50", three ASUS 24" monitors and an old 720p LG that is pushing 12 years that all have an option to set the picture format to 4:3 or 16:9. To be honest, I have never found a HDTV that didn't have this option available (that's not to say they don't exist).

I think $30 is a little too high for a cable that has no 4:3 support and inaccurate colors.

the output colors of pound cable actually look like the colors on the Sharp CRT i'm using right now. tv has different colors back then,my grandma's tv used to look green-ish...maybe the designers of this cable used the same Sharp Tv im using now as color reference?but not having 4:3 support is a bummer tho
I think the contrast and saturation of the pound really takes away details in the background. Analogue has the best balance.

Nothing beats the old CRT for my retro games. Just love the old feel that it brings back.
Using a decent upscaler like the FrameMeister or OSSC on a modern TV looks just as good in my opinion. In fact if you are in the US and thus can't access RGB from your consoles via most CRT televisions, it actually looks a lot better than it ever could on an old consumer grade CRT.

@@subzero8679 Really? I've had mine for 2 years or so, use it pretty much every day and it's never given me any trouble. It just gives me amazing picture quality that rivals that of a PVM with minimal lag and great flexibility / customisability. It also has excellent compatibility with televisions unlike some of the other scalers on the market which simply line multiply and can produce an "of spec" image that some TV's simply aren't capable of understanding.
If you can have one it is good. But in my opinion having a flat, big TV that weighs less then 50kg is a hell of an advantage. I just can't put a (useab) 150kg TV that is like half a Meter or even more in depth in my room. And that it is barely 40"
Framemeister and RGB Cables are still one of the best solutions for many consoles. By myself i have an Automaticlly RGB Scart Switcher (8-Port) hooked up to the Framemeister and all consoles have RGB Cables, its not cheap but its worth it. But for 30$ its not that bad and u can adjust your tv too look it better.
Smartest thing I did was get a bunch of rgb scart cables for most of my Retro systems. I have a rgb switch box from Amazon and i have my snes, genesis and neo geo aes connected to a trinitron with the switch box allowing me to swap between them.
How is the lag?
THIS. This is way more important than saturated colors to me. I want to know if this is going to be a viable alternative to my mammoth CRT tv in terms of input lag.
John Keefe in addition to converter's lag, lcd displays also have a huge lag compared to crt's.
These Pound cables use a scaler chip which adds about 6-7 frames of input lag. They're absolutely terrible.

Most upscalers will add lag unfortunately and this one does a bit, but I didn't find games unplayable with the 30 or so games I tried. It's also important to put your HDTV in GAME MODE so it doesn't add unnecessary video processing on top of that.
You get what you pay for. Just look at the game text when MJR compares composite, analog NT & pound cable, the analog NT blows them out of the water.
Stick with professionally made products such as the analog NT, HDMI console mods or high quality RGB cables with a CRT.
I'm absolutely shocked you didn't cover latency at all with this review. That information is vital for a device like this.

Cables like these are perfect for those retro gamers that don't care about video and audio quality, lag, correct colors, artifacts, etc. and there are surprisingly a whole bunch of them. I know a few that for the sake of simplicity, plug all their systems including PS3 and XBOX 360 to a composite switch box plugged to their LCD HDTV, and they are happy playing it just like that. Once I even felt so bad for this one friend of mine, that I gave him a 20 inch Sony Trinitron in excellent shape, it had composite and component inputs, I calibrated the convergence on it, told him he should at least play his old systems the way they were meant to be played on a CRT. A few weeks later I go visit him, and notice his NES looks like crap on the CRT, I look behind and yup he used the RF cable.

People don't care about the issue because the NES games ect. have poor graphics compared to games now, they don't see the difference nor do they care.

They won't work with NTSC N64 and GC because those don't output RGB, but they might work with the PAL GC because it does have native RGB support, but them the cable might not support 480i output

Well, SNES does not seem to have widescreen games. The PlayStation does have widescreen games, like Touge Max, Bloody Roar II, Wip3out and PAC-MAN WORLD, so that’s why the Pound HDMI adapter for the latter stretches the screen in the 720p space.

If you are wanting quality on a budget, better to get the Retrotink. However, just like the Retrotink, if this cable existed a few years ago when I started collecting retro games, I probably would have went with it and been happy with it, and just adjusted my TV settings.
Now that I am running Framemeister, retrotink, and HD Retrovision cables, no way I would go with this.
Being born in 87’ the SNES is my childhood console. We didn’t have much money and the games were very expensive so one way we played different games was by sharing and borrowing games from neighbors and vice versa. I would go over to my friends homes and play for hours and then we would take a break and went outside to play. You don’t see this happen anymore. Man how the years went by...
You can see the issue with the reds in their example screenshots on their website although it isn't as obvious due to the fact that those shots don't actually have much red/orange in them in general however if you compare those sections alone they do look more saturated than they should while the rest of the image looks fine.
Great review, thanks for doing it. It seems like people could probably overcome most of the issues with some tweaks to TV picture settings, which would make this a very affordable option (IMO).

Yea a lot of new smart TVs or even just basic HDTVs can just lower the saturation of the input or just change certain colors entirely.
Three problems with these cables:
1) 16:9 out of the box is an awful decision. Even more so if there’s no 4:3 option.
2) You shouldn’t have to change the color & saturation settings on your television/capture card to accommodate for a new cable.
3) Due to #2 the components used in the cable should be suspect to be of very cheap quality.
This is pretty on par for a Chinese cash grab towards the retro community, and I would advise people spend a few more bucks for a better solution (HD Retrovision Cables, OSSC, Super NT) if they are looking to spend on their SNES retro set up.

I think i'll stick with my SNES RGB Scart cable thanks. Real scan lines and perfect colours on my Trinitron. Can't help wondering if these Pound devices are just nicer packaged re-badges of the very similar looking ones you can get from China, I got a PS2 HDMI one for $5 on Ali Express which works fine

I wish you would do comparisons between Svideo and HDMI. I was lucky enough to have an Svideo cable for my SNES back in August 1991 and a nice Svideo compatible CRT.
The Svideo (Y/C) cable gets rid of the color bleeding and crosshatch effect, even on a modern HDTV.

I never play my older games stretched. I play my old games from NES-PS2 era on my 1080p television and I put the screen at the smallest ratio and honestly even with composite video my games look fantastic.
Just like the PS2/1 cable from Pound, they screwed the pooch on this one.
I have the Xbox (I think the revised one) and Dreamcast cables and they are actually really good. No stretching at all, extremely good video quality and they work without plugging in USB power.
I actually found the ps1/2 cable to be excellent

Why no USB plug-in, because the Dreamcast and Xbox don't have power bricks built-in their respective power cables.
The Dreamcast one is awful too. Screen shifting and weird ass screen tearing... no thanks.
I have heard that they have worked on updated firmware for these cables, hopefully they have fixed some of these issues, specially the color inaccuracy and lag. And a 4:3 aspect ratio sure would be nice. Doubt there's a ton they can do though with the crappy Chinese chip set they are using.
That saturation can be fixed with tv settings, not a big deal, this looks like a good option
When you play these old games on a newer TV make sure to up the sharpness that should help with the blurry text. They need to fix the reds in this HDMI kit and I also agree they should not be out putting in 16:9 ratio.
So basically, if your tv still has composite hookups, just use those. lol
If you're using an HD TV, that isn't really optimal. Most HD TVs handle compostie very poorly. It looks ugly and you get weird ghosting.
not to mention 240p, many HD TVs treat 240p as a 480i signal then try to de-interlace it which negatively affects the signal.
The saturation could be fixed when you're HD TV has the decent tools to configure the saturation.

Filip - 'Fixing' the TV settings for this cable - which would break the settings for everything else - is not a solution.

I bought it nonetheless and i gotta say i'm impressed, video quality is pretty great and color saturation is not so severe. The output is 4:3, even when the TV is set to 16:9, i was definitely not expecting that
They must have secretly released an updated version that displays in 4:3, I had the version that displayed widescreen and had to set the TV to 4:3.

DrLite because that’s how the games were originally intended to look. They looked blurry due to the limitations of televisions at the time, not because they games were designed to look bad. These new hookups allow you to see the games the way they were designed.
Couldn’t you just adjust on your tv to display the picture in 4:3? That’s what I do when I play n64 on my hdtv
A little? You're being too kind, MJR :) This looks over saturated to me. I would also have concerns about input lag. I know your tv has influence on this, but I can only imagine the Pound making it worse. For $30 this would be okay for someone who doesn't know better.
I still have my SNES hooked up to a CRT and was looking at getting the HD retrovision component cables for it. But I was waiting to see if pound released an HDMI to hook it up to a newer tv. After seeing this, I think I’m gonna stick with the CRT for now and pick up the retrovision cables

What I’ve learned from this video is the super NT analogue is amazing.
I don't understand why all of these hardware manufacturers stretch the image by default. Sure you want to maximize that real estate on the screen, but not at the cost of stretched pixels. At least give people the option (using a workaround on a TV shouldn't count). Also, manually playing around with the RGB values is a royal pain if you're using your TV for anything other than the console. I guess if your TV allows you to save color profiles it's alright, but still really annoying.
For $30 I think the price is alright, but I'd personally wait for a second revision where the key issues are fixed.
Pound cables really aren't very good, they're okay for people just want something cheap and convenient but there are VASTLY superior options out there for using retro consoles with modern televisions. God knows why they intentionally stretch 4:3 content to 16:9, looks bloody terrible and there are some TV's out there that do not feature the option to manually change the aspect ratio back. If they insist on stretching it by default, they should at least build in a switch that allows you to change back to the original aspect ratio.

Playing 4:3 games in 16:9 is like watching 4:3 movies in 16:9. It's garbage.
I appreciate the side by side comparisons. It allows the consumer to see it for themselves. Personally, I dont think it is a bad idea to get and seems as a fair price.
honestly an easy fix is to just turn down the saturation on your tv. cause most if not all tvs, including hd tvs, allow you to change the picture on your tv.
The pound cable looks terrible. Wrong colors, 16:3 default stretch, and I've seen more detailed screencaps from other console Pound cables showing they don't even output clean pixel edges. It's shoddily made garbage. Would not recommend them to anyone as it would be sociopathic to do so.

Spending 10 seconds in your TV's picture settings can correct everything the Pound does wrong. So in my book it's a win. Will consider a purchase.
DrQuinMagna aspect ratio aside, this thing is noisy and soft as hell. It's absolutely not worth getting when you could save up and get a proper upscaler like the Framemeister or line doubler like the OSSC.
@@GreenPintoMedia Noise isn't really an issue for my setup. I have a custom built cabinet that cancels out nearly all my systems noises. Mainly built it for an old AMD phenom system I kept inside it. But I look mainly for picture quality. 30 bucks ain't bad in my situation.

I have the PS2 pound cable and i've heard signal noise in my playthrough when i stream and record on a Elgato HD 60 Pro. I've used my power strip USB port and a rechargeable power brick and it's still present. I can't say if the SNES cable here has signal noise but it being affordable i can't deny this is true i mean come on... 20-30$... weigh your options.

I have a few of these pound cables myself and the main thing I have noticed is that they are pretty inconsistent when it comes to image quality. They are great solutions for the vintage gamer with a modest budget but there are better solutions to be found.
The over saturation of the red isn't a deal breaker for me. I think this is a cool device to get an original SNES playable on modern TVs.
For someone who is more of a perfectionist with their retro gaming set up I can see why this would not be ideal. I have a friend who has a SNES they bought a while ago and this would be right up there alley. They're not trying to have the perfect video set up for it.... they just wanna be able to play their old games on their new TVs.
Whould be possible to fix the red issue with a resistor on red signal on RGB. Or just change the levels on tv.

This cable is a disappointment but some people want to play their original carts on original hardware on their modern day TV. If a cable is made that gets the picture right many people will be really happy to have another option.
I'm hesitant as well, I haven't looked at every smart TV on the market but my LG 4k accepts RCA cables, seems a bit pointless unless you are into stretched out screens and don't know how to do it yourself through the settings. Now if someone magic-ed an F connector to HDMI I'd be all over that, because it means both my Coleco and Atari 7800 can be hooked up to a HDMI splitter.
The analogue looks significantly better than the other two.
For myself playing on my Sony Trinitron CRT with S-Video cables in correct 4:3 aspect ratio is all I ever need. I have a nice Nes/Snes Hdmi Raspberry PI and still find myself going back to playing on on the Trinitron.
Analogue Super NT is still the best way to play.

Man, for reviews like this.. really need to show what the comparison is between an ideal solution vs this budget solution. No one uses composite with Framemeister, so that misleading advertising by Pound should be ignored. Notice Pound doesn't mention the OSSC, which is faster than the Framemeister at less than half the price. Compare RGB+Framemeister or SCART/Component+OSSC for a *REAL* comparison. The HD Retrovision component cables are around $63, and paired with the OSSC, it's at pure RGB-level of quality with almost zero lag introduced, unlike the Framemeister or Pound. The OSSC can be built for around $100, or buy it for around $150-175 if you can't solder, but that's a one-time cost to support all retro consoles from one device, unlike a cable. I use the OSSC for over a dozen consoles, so that's around $8-10 per console plus the $63 for HD Retrovision. $73 to have the SNES look *perfect* with nearly zero additional lag compared to $30 for cables that introduce a lot of lag, have over-saturated colors, and make me want to put on glasses to try to sharpen how blurry the game looks.. no thanks.. just use a $12 composite-to-HDMI converter if you just want to play on modern TVs on a budget.

Very fond memories of lamborghini american challenge i played it alot when i still had a snes , i remember it being one of the harder games to beat that i owned love the soundtrack too.
Am I alone here? I think it makes the colors pop more and actually looks better. Depending on the game. That space mega force clip looks awesome.
Remember, you can always adjust your colors and contrast etc on your tv. But for the price it’s better than some of these other cheap jack rips

I saw LRG announce this and hoped you had a review up - and my prayers were answered! I like the idea here but I already have a Retron for when I need to record SNES footage and I personally don’t mind the muddiness of old fashioned composite. Maybe a good compromise for someone on a budget though!

I agree, it's so cheap and does nearly the same job as an RGB or HDMI modded console. I'd just ignore the haters and do what is best for your budget brother. This Pound Technology is a fantastic solution for cheap fucks like us lol.
@@Thunderbolt5827 Buying a SNES Classic is actually a great idea for someone considering burning $30 on probably the worst SNES cable on the market. It's, what $60-70 but you get pretty accurate low lag SNES emulation at the same 720p resolution and the hacking software is versatile, easy to use and mature. I'm about real hardware in most cases but the SNES Classic will clearly give you a more authentic solution than the insultingly bad experience the Pound cable provides.

If you don't like the colors or the lighting, contrast, etc. you can always customize those settings and save them on most modern TV's and call up the saved settings when gaming. DUH!

Man, a lot of people are hard working to get best pictures from old consoles. MLiG, retroRGB, talented engineers and others. OSSC, good component cables, framemeister, FPGA replica of real consoles, good HDMI solutions, not this crap converter. Man, please, stop advertising this crap and tell people about good products! Even AVGN boost his capture quality. Jesus, give us quality!

I sold my Framemeister, that thing is absurdly expensive and messy for the very simple task it performs. And it still adds input lag.

MJR this channel is going downhill.
1. Doesn't call out obvious crap anymore, I suspect because you are afraid they still stop sending stuff.
2. Videos are always exactly 10min and few seconds for ad revenue while most is filler talk.
3. "Testing" a product should be more than listing the few functions something has.

SNES has the same output plug that N64 and Gamecube had. I wish he tested what the Pound cable did in those consoles as well. Also, whenever someone is testing an upscaler I expect an analysis of any lag it may or may not introduce.

Please tell me what I didn't call out in this video? I think my review said all the pros and cons and was fair for the $30 price point. Notice I included the Analogue Super NT for those that want perfection. As for video length...this video was originally longer with 30 games tested, but that seemed like overkill...so I cut it down.
