Coach Morgan loves to use cycling for cross-training. Like her, many runners use cycling for cross-training to enhance their running performance. Whether runners are healthy or working through an injury, cycling is a low-impact exercise to help make considerable gains in your running without damaging your leg muscles. Coach Morgan will go over why cycling can be the best new way to train toward your running goals. - Спорт
A few years ago when I was injured from running I took up cycling to stay in shape, and after probably 6 months when I ran again I didn't miss a beat; my race times stayed the same!
Absolutely agree. In fact, I ran my first half-marathon (completely raw, didn't know what I was doing or how to train properly, average gear) in 95 minutes and I spent at least 50% of the time in training riding and grinding up hills out of the saddle. Later on, I spent less time riding and more time running, but I could never better that time. With more knowledge about running/training/proper gear, etc, I then went back to my earlier days and spent more time on the bike than before. Guess what? I went under 90 minutes for the half-marathon. Riding definitely builds strength that you otherwise wouldn't have (it's amazing what an all-body workout it can be) and, it takes away the grind of running every day.
I'm a cyclist and do a little running to mix it up. Wish you guys had a cycling channel. Many of your core and stretch workouts very helpful.
Check out these guys. Not as good when it comes to running but really good at cycling. ruclips.net/user/gtn
@@Peter-ri9ie Hah, my first RUclips running video was one of theirs, about uphill running technique. The RUclips Algorithm brought me to TRE from there (and to a couple of other similar channels).
For runners that are getting into cycling, please make sure you get a bike that fits because if you ride on a bike that doesn’t , it will cause more issues instead of helping. Cheers.
Great comment. Exactly what happened to me, and I've since then fixed the issues
And don't forget to buy a reputable bike as well. I'll be talking to someone and they'll say "my bike broke down" and I'll ask them how much they paid for it. Upon receiving the answer, I think to myself "no wonder it broke down".
Great video! I just added biking into my routine a little over a month ago and can already feel massive improvement in my running. I feel like I have so much more power in my legs and am able to go faster for longer than before I started biking. It's been great fun!
I love mixing cycling into my running routine on a daily basis. I've been commuting to work/gym & getting around town on a bike for around 18 months. I loved cycling so much I built up a track bike to use as my transport around town. Even on those busy work days where I don't have time to train, cycling to work & back clear my mind & help me feel like I've done something apart from go to work!
I'm in my mid sixties and have run and cycled for many years, mostly running, although I did some criterium racing when I was young. But I have always mixed some cycling into my training. One thing I have discovered is that short track intervals assist very well with my cycling, and visa versa! The title of this vlog explains why, strength! And of course hills have always been described as speedwork in disguise. I think you did a great job explaining the crossover of these benefits. Keep up the great work!
Life time runner here ... I competed my first triathlon last month so had been cycling 3 to 4 times per week for the last 8 months and running just once sometimes twice per week due to tendonitis in my knees (gracilis)... my running was the best it has been in about 10 years. This surprised me as I have always placed so much value on specificity of training ... but it is the same aerobic system and you can put so much volume in on the bike.
I do lots of spin cycle to mix things up, especially if the weather is no good for a run. Very handy in the wintertime when I can just head to the gym and hop on a bike.
This is the best cycling for runners video. Straight to the point
thank you!!! I have been waiting for this video since I just got my first road bike!
Awesome!
When I was a teen I’d run 10K every other day and ride 20miles on the opposite days... it made a great difference in my running... I tried to start getting back into biking but I pushed too hard initially and ended up injured... I’m going to try again eventually...
Why not do that now? I regularly run 5-6miles and do about 14 miles commute to get out to the trail. I have two days like that, and two days just simpler 3-4mile runs, with yoga and swimming. It helps if you don’t own a car
@@ricodelavega4511 id love too... but I hav a car... and a family... a large family... and right now barely enough time to run 20 miles a week... so I do what I can...
With the heat index over 100 here in South Carolina these days I have started using my smart trainer to supplement/augment my training for a half marathon in November. My legs usually feel fresher the day after the bike workout.
Yes I love cycling. Less than a month and I feel like I'm moving faster. It's amazing!
wow -- interesting as I am getting back into "running" consistently, not that I ever quit, just that Covid thing ended up cancelling my local marathon last year, it's just hard formulating a plan, or a goal -- but the other day, ordered a tube and fixed my bicycle tire -- to do recovery work, glad to know that just might work for faster recoveries
Yup, i agree with you. With my folding bike
Swimming ,cycling ,skipping ,no brainer low impact training, that adds variety ,fun ,and hopefully get consistency with less injuries but I’ll be the only runner in the world that will probably get slower

Great advice
Yes I will be more next year training for a real mountain 102 miler with 20k of vert and the race starts at 7k feet above sea level and goes up to 11k above Sea level. Yes biking will help a ton when my legs feel like Jell-O.
I just started running this winter and my endurance/ aerobic capacity built by regularly biking during the year before I started running translated beautifully.
Can´t agree more with all the points mentioned in the video and as for being a "beginner runner" I will keep cross-training so I can endure higher training volume (hopefully) without picking up running injuries.
love running and cycling to
Im a runner and a long distance bike rider. I definitely doing more running
Taking your point about ease of stopping when running as compared to cycling, it’s also much easier to lollygag on a bike than when you’re running - at least in my experience. If I’m running, I can tell immediately if I’ve slowed down significantly. On a bike, the wind’s still moving over me and it seems like I’m going places even if my wattage, pace, etc. is trending wimpy.
I am very lucky to live in the Bay...East Bay at that. I have rolling hills around me and I trail run and climb big a$$ hills on my mountain bike. Running and riding used to be tough on me because it didn't keep my attention. Thats why I stick to trails only. Nothing like running through some redwoods and up some hills not knowing whats around that corner. It really helps with my adhd and I can spend a couple hours on the trails and not even think about it. So yeah, do both and try the trails if road running and biking are as boring to you as it is to me.
Cycling keeps you 'cardio' fit while your running muscles heal. I can run pretty fast for quite a while even though I'm a cyclist and not a runner, BUT my legs are in pieces the next day!
Yeah plus bike riding is fun especially Mountain bike riding is fun gives the brain a rest from running, so when you get back to running u feel more refreshed & enjoy running more 👍
yes EXCEPT do NOT use those wrap-around cycling cages for your feet, aka bear traps, aka those 70s or 80s things. while they may be good to keep your foot secure, it's TOO secure and in emergency you CANNOT get out of them like you'd need to. go modern clipless or plain flat pedals - no cages please.
Totally agree, can’t believe she mentioned those.
Pedal straps are another option
@@imaXkillXya No really. The rest is simply not safe. It's really bad advice to use anything besides clipless or flat.
The other advantage of clipless is that it pretty much means you have to wear cycling shoes. Cycling shoes will typically have much stiffer soles than trainers/sneakers which will help protect the arches of your feet and is also better for transmitting power through the pedals
Nice video👍
I love both activities equally well, picked up running and cycling simultaneously seven months ago, and I am making more progress in both forms of recreation than if I focused on one of them, besides that, it is defenitely more fun and the risk of boredom is minimalysed., and the amount of muscle endurance in both types of movement seems more than the sum of the parts.
Great video!! Just one thing: No cages. Clip in or leave it, as anything else is unsafe.
Cycling made me run longer. It was a good break from the pounding of running and making the heart stronger
I like cycling indoor on Zwift or MyWhoosh during my rest days from running. It is supposed to be recovery. The problem is I like to do those workouts and they ended really not a easy and still adding on fatigue. So it may not be true just because there's no impact, it's easier.
first of all thank you for the video. would u suggest running 5km on roads 5 days a week.
Cycling allows me to do longer training efforts. I can do a 5hr ride pretty regularly where as a 5 hr run would require several weeks of recovery. As a runner and cyclist our legs get highly developed and our upper body atrophy, that's where swimming and a little calisthenics helps balance things out.
I mean if you try and push on your bike for 5hr you will have a long recovery time aswell.
You look super comfy on that bike.
same to be said for cycling on my spin bike?
There are many vids advising how to train the body to not circumvent some muscles when running, such glute activation workouts.. does adding cycling stop lazy glutes when running?
Yep,cycling also helps us relax
P.S. I did a fartlek run today and I will definitely be on the bike tommorow😊.
I would advice against trying to pull up when cycling clipped in. This can over time increase risk of overuse injuries. (Being clipped in simply helps put more power into the pedals.) Looking at the cycle from the right side, you should focus on a powerful kick on the 12 to 3 a clock and the stamp of 3 to 6 a clock. This will give you the bulk of your power. You should of course also be able to spin a easy gear in 120+ cadence with out bouncing, preferably you should be able to spin with out moving anything but your legs. This plus bringing power to your kicks will level you up, but you looked good on the bike so you are are not doing anything wrong at all.
What model helmet is that black one?
Should we give up run days to do bike riding or double up? I’m currently running 4 days, doing strength and core 2 days, with one day of rest.
I wanna cycle! But I have no idea where to start equipment wise :/ seems so overwhelming
Riding the bike might help me For Sprinting
Mostly cycle but with the knowledge Ive gotten from this channel its taken me from barely able to run 1 mile to now doing at least a 10k a week and has really up'd me cycling mileage per ride.
Love cycling, but could never feel fully comfortable with clip ins. Prefer cages.
Cycling is good. Cycling is fun. Cycling is aerobic. But no elite runner ever went from a 2:17 marathon to a 2:11 marathon because he started biking. As Tom Fleming once said (look him up), "I've never seen a Kenyan on a spin bike. a treadmill, or a stairmaster."
While I will not disagree with anything posted (and find the quote amusing), I would guess that there are not too many elite marathon runners on this channel looking for advice. I would further surmise that this is simply an effort to give others a training option to prevent wear and tear on their bodies.
I’ve seen Kenyans on a treadmill. :)
Interesting. Does Kipchoge ride a bike? 🤪🏃♂️🏃♂️
Been a runner a couple of years now and was introduced to mountain biking recently as a lessor evil to my legs. I struggle to balance the two, I find since I've been doing mountain biking I've become "lazy" while running (slow down more often). Also feels like its decreased my fitness. I used the 1:3 principle - i.e. 10k run = 30k ride. My passion is running and I've resorted to selling my MTB because it started killing my running.
Depends on the type of cycling. When I ride I spend lots of time on 30 degree inclines, standing up out of the saddle. Not only does this activate the calves but the 'grind' gives you an all-body workout. I've definitely seen the benefits and this cross-training (along with running, obviously) got me to a sub-90 for the half-marathon.
In my past experience I never found cycling to make me be a stronger runner; however, running definitely made me a stronger cyclist.
It doesn't really. It just works cardio a bit but less than running. But its good if you got a bad foot or knee as a replacement until it heals for a few days. Or even a bad back.

I'm not sure if I am running every other day to help with my cycling or if I am cycling every other day to help with my running lol. All I know is I'm having fun, getting fit and losing a tonne of weight.
He he it’s a bit scary tho when it goes sooo fast. Not really the same thing when running. 😂🙋🏻♂️
I'm trying to get through an annoying Achilles issue and I'm wondering if cycling is good for that?
I'm in the same boat and also using a stationary bike to keep as fit as possible. Achilles injury now for 4months
I have an achilles issue too and cycling seems to be keeping me in some kind of shape without hurting my achilles. Just out of curiosity, when did your issue start and how did/does it feel? Mine doesn't hurt but feels like a weird pressure/stiffness.
@@bouquet_of_circles4484 It's strange about these Achilles. I had a right Achilles issue for years which now seems to have subsided but now my left Achilles is starting to hurt. It gets stiff easily, and after a long run it's is hard to walk later on and it is tender. I've tried a million things, and they seemed to work on the right but now won't work on the left. Good luck with yours!
@@sojournern Oh man you're scaring me. It's only been a month for me. I'm going to try running with a compression sleeve on to see if it helps.
@@bouquet_of_circles4484 I've found compression socks to be much better than a sleeve, which cuts off circulation. Stretching both before and afterwards also is a big help. Good luck. Don't let it discourage you.
I am a Mtbiker who cant decide if I want to be a trail runner or a MTbiker ?
be both! 🏃🏼♂️🚵♂️
Cycling is great for your back.
I agree! I wound up getting crazy into cycling during COVID. I stopped just short of purchasing the costume though.
It’s not really a costume.Do you run in jeans and welly boots?
@@okantichrist No no no, if you have a 200$ jersey with bib shorts and clip in shoes, you have a costume on. Just to clarify.
Lets say you had a running race and your legs are very sore. Do you:
a) stay off your feet as much as possible
b) go for a walk or super easy jog
c) go for an easy bike ride
Definitely go for a walk or easy bike ride.I wouldn’t go for a jog even a gentle one
Is biking dangerous for ITBS?
Not in my experience. I have had ITBS a few times, lateral leg raises a couple times a week seems to get rid of it for me. Hope this helps.
Should cyclist / Mountain bikers start running? What tips would you give? :)
hmm might be a good idea for a video!
@@TheRunExperience I would love a video on that. :D While I love mountain biking, I do want to do more cross training starting with running. :)
And then start swimming and you can do a triathlon!!!
Stop talking about "flushing the lactic acid" out of the muscles during recovery activities 🤦♀️ Lactic acid or rather lactate is gone from your system about an hour after you finish your workout. By no means does it stay there until the next day and no, it doesn't need to be "flushed out". Your body gets rid of it no matter what you do and the soreness you may feel after a hard workout is not caused by any lactate buildup in the muscles.
I was going to say this too, it's such an annoying misconception.
When I ran my first marathon, I felt damaged the next day and had a sports massage booked in. The masseur said I had such a heavy build up of lactic acid and not to do any form of exercise for at least two weeks. I did hit the wall at the 16 mile mark in the race. If that wasn’t a lactic acid build up, what was causing that stiffness?
Try those recovery activities aiming at “flushing out” lactic acid. Post workout soreness and the DOMS are both dramatically reduced.
I don’t care about semantics or technical accuracy, it fucking works.
What evidence do you have to go with your statement??
Mines boxing
make sure they dont hit you low and blow out your groin and get a hernia.
Just do triathlon. You’ll actually do something with your upper body. Imagine that.
It all depends where you cycle it's not safe to cycle on the roads
Biking does absolutely nothing for me except make me miserable. Yoga and weight training are good additions.
I enjoy running , but cycling is not my thing
Cycle? Wait... what kind of cycle? 😂
Do you what to be a better athlete? Become a Triathlete!! 🤷♂️
... bike work leg. run work leg. work leg make strong. bike work, run work. all work. End.
Rhianna?
@@ultimasurge No.
Runners make good cyclists...cyclists cant run...
