  • Maybe legs aside, road cyclists are certainly not known for having muscles. Bodybuilders on the other hand, are all about strength and massive muscles. You could say that bodybuilders and cyclists are polar opposites. Well then, what would happen if a bodybuilder went head-to-head with a cyclist? Hank and Ollie met champion bodybuilder Brad Parker for some challenges!

      I really want to look like Brad but still be able to bike up the hill like Ollie. Fat chance, I'll stick with what I do, biking for fun and exercise with a few weight room exercises thrown in. Being almost 70 I am NOT going to impress anybody anyway.

      The more muscle you put on the more your cardio will go shit, have to train those new muscles for it

    As a former bodybuilder myself I can vouch for the cardiovascular benefits of cycling for bodybuilders , it was so much better to get out on a real bike instead of grinding away on a stationary in the gym looking at a wall, and also theres huge benefits from cycling for adding detail and separation in the legs, it did wonders for my calves as well tbh.
    Also bear in mind Tom platz was a keen cyclist

      I have been lifting for 4 years and one thing I always make sure to do is run atleast 3 miles before training session. ON weekends I mountain bike for fun. IM big in gym and can bike/run better than anyone I met so far. As long as u do cardiovascular fitness to your good.

    There's a stigma that goes along with most blokes of this size, all walking around giving it "Billy big balls". Having said that, I take my hat off to Brad. Firstly for accepting the challenge to take on the beast that is Ollie and secondly, for going into it most likely knowing he'd come second. We're all different and can't all be good at everything, fair play Brad 👍

      @@gcn for sure. Would be interesting to see how he goes after a bit of training, especially on a flat course. As a fairly big guy myself I'm never going to be the mountain goat some of you guys are but my big legs have a bit of power on the flat.

      I fear that attempting that would only lead to a destroyed bicycle. With that much weight and power, there is no way the drivetrain will withstand the torque of a sprint. It might even crack the frame.

    As someone who has been lifting for about a decade and only recently got into cycling I was incredibly humbled the first few days I cycled. Loved this video GCN!

      As me ! 20 years in cycling and then hit a gym for the first time in my life. Depends on what your goals are but for me, gyms are now fun and interesting to bulk just 'a bit' but personally, the two wheels take me to places that I could never imagine they existed.       the thought of being trapped in a gym with nothing to look at but a bunch of sweaty people or even working out in a house staring at the same four walls is vastly unappealing to me.
      I should still be cross training though, which I don't, that would improve my ability overall. (and help reduce this over-40 paunch that I got going on (well for me it was an "over-45", that was the winter I barely cycled at all, and it hasn't gone away no matter how much I cycle. but I saw a lot of my beer drinking buddies get it in their 30s))

      I would say weight lifters which I was one now 49 years old, need cardio(aka cycling) to balance out their fitness. But no all that extra upper body weight doesn't help you much when you hit a steep hill. Weight lifting if your not careful can also be bad for your joint health. Really you are better off building a moderate physique in the gym, rather than trying to look like Arnold. Moderate builds your joints, excess can tear them down, in my opinion.

      @@jeffk464 At 55 and an avid cyclist now I wish I hadn't done the heavy lifting in my younger days. The upside at (an in-shape weight of) 230 # (104kg) a 105 groupset is all I need; spending the extra dollars for Ultegra or DA to save 1 kg doesn't make any sense, nor would it improve my time, so there's that LOL.

    Would love to see more from Brad! I'm a former bodybuilder myself who has switched over to cycling and it has been so much fun seeing my body adapt. I also love seeing how incredibly well optimized each person's body is to the task they perform respectively

      I absolutely loved this. I also came from BBing after I had a grade 3 AC joint separation. I’d love to see more about adaptations and the disciplinary mindset when it comes to training. I’ve lost ~50lbs/~26kg in the last two years. Props to Brad and great humor all around!

      Not a bodybuilder myself but I do workout for the last 27 years. It took me a whole year to start cycling sort of well on MTB and not having to drop from bike and actually complete all my rides. Our body is such a cool and adaptive machine.

      The body builder would win in a very short sprint on a flat surface, any other type of long haul or uphill cycling they would lose since they are so much heavier.

    The human body is crazy. Well done to brad, a lot of people hate cycling uphills even veteran cyclists so to say brad who's a bodybuilder did that is very impressive.

      I actually like riding up hills, it feels like a good leg workout. But my legs are fairly strong cus of weight lifting.
      I mean unless the hill is stupidly big and steep...

      @@MrTripleXXX I have a hill near me that is about 1.3 miles long and varies from 7% to 12%. First time I tried to climb it I had to stop and walk for a bit. But I kept trying again and again. After 1.5 years of doing it 2/3 times a month I found myself passing the newbies and motoring up cleanly. It was a great feeling.
      Just had both knees replaced this year and they say I can start riding again in November. I cant' wait. I will probably have to spend the next 1.5 years just getting to the hill let alone getting over it. Can anyone say e-bike. 🙂

      Is it because of cycling? Just curious as I like cycling myself and this thought might be in my head for a while so need to know for sure ^^

      @@getcattoed9291 Sure, not directly related to cycling. The right knee my ACL was torn from both ends back about 40 years ago. It was predicted I would need replacement as I got older. The left knee was a bit of a surprise. But it went bad in the 3 months following the first one. The only connection to bicycles is that they were weak to start with and riding 50 miles a day likely accelerated the degradation.
      As a result I have not been riding for a couple of years and my Trek has been hanging in the garage. My concern is that I don't want to wear out the new knees. I have heard anecdotal evidence that the legs never fully recover. I am seriously looking at the the Specialized Turbo Vado SL. A small battery and motor that gives a little assist not an electric motorcycle. But the Trek gets used first.
      So, no not a direct connection to bikes.

      we dont know how much watts brad was doing. olie said he is keeping above 400. so from there its easy to calculate just needs brads watts

      Its not even about Watts lol... Ollie would win easily anyway as you can only imagine how much muscle mass needs to be fueled by Brad compared to Ollie where i believe Ollie have even bigger left heart chamber as well. Different world for body builder.

    Cool video, as a big guy myself I'm 1.92 and 110kg I know how Brad feels since I felt it when I started cycling, I have explosive power but the climbs are a killer. Video suggestion, 1 or 2 month training the cyclist in the gym and the bodybuilder in the bike, record the progress and results for both at the end. That could be great!!! Awesome video guys!!!

      Of course in the flats we normies do ok on the bike. When you realize how much faster the good cyclists are on the climb and how much better their ratio is, the more respect you have for them.

      @@goku445 correct but one unfair point is the shoes part. It does an incredible difference to have the road mechanism (where basically you can apply strength with both feet going up and down) or the normal one (where you basically just apply pressure down on the pedals).
      PS: Sorry if the vocabulary is not clear, I am not a native and I am not sure the technical words are those 😂

      @@joaoreis2715 The power created on the upstroke is negligible (though noticeable in a sprint when the muscles aren't fatigued) since the muscles used with pulling up the leg are much smaller and fatigue much faster compared to the quadriceps (numerous studies back this up). However, clipless does provide a much stiffer interface between the shoe and the pedal as well as making it easier to unweight the pedal on the upstroke. Overall, technique can be compensated to adjust for either flat or clipless pedals, so even if Brad had clipless pedals, his pedaling technique probably wouldn't have taken much advantage of it.

    Being a recreational lifter myself and an avid cycling enthusiast. Can totally relate to this content. There is alot of back and forth within the 2 communities that one cannot successfully do both. Which is definitely true, but it's definitely possible to be good at both, just not the best.

      @thegigachad1254mid at both will get you the healthiest and most practical physique you can have. Aero is nice, but so is being able to lift heavy things with ease. Strength is nice, but so is being able to run/bike reasonable distances without feeling like you’re going to die.
      There’s a reason special forces guys are neither purely cardio or strength guys. You need to be above average at both, but each detracts from the other.

    My brother was a body builder and about the same size as Brad.
    He transition in to doing Ironman and it was amazing to see his transformation.
    Still is incredibly strong but is now highly functional. His speed, strength and endurance gains were awesome to witness over the years.

    Mad respect for Brad to actually give it a go up that hill. No way I would want to punish myself so badly on that hill from being so unused to such efforts. I wish they would have told us their weights, because you can't be too skinny to climb, but you definitely can be too heavy.

    As a cyclist, I think Brad was outstanding. First time riding like that and doing that well was a real feat. He did far better than I thought he would. The training for the two sports is totally different.

    I can tell you right now, as a fellow big guy and weight lifter, that mountain and hill riding is absolutely much more difficult even with gigantic leg muscles. There's just so much more mass on me vs. someone with 50lbs less weight.
    I catch up when it comes to downhill and flat sprints. As a matter of fact the weight is becomes negligible and becomes kind of an advantage.
    Brad should absolutely try out a track bike (where I started personally) on a velodrome. All that power through the legs becomes a boon.

    I really like videos like that. I've been to the gym for ages, done some road cycling - mostly into running now (at least until I finish this marathon by the end of this month in Berlin) and I've enjoyed all of it. I couldn't imagine a life without sports and I have the utmost respect for every sportsperson out there. However what I always hated about the sports I'd been doing were the people who kept disrespecting others for the sports they were doing as if that made their their life decissions better. In reality however it is pretty impressive if you can squat 250kg but it is also very impressive if you can do what Olie did. In both cases you have to put in work - and they both did.

    Good content GCN - this shows a good comparison of muscle strength vs endurance and the benefits to both. You should definitely have Brad back for more challenges and discuss more of the transferable benefits of strength training to the bike and also the different energy systems used by each discipline!

    Enjoyed this one! I'm not a road guy (MTB and former bmx guy all the way) but I do watch GCN from time to time. As a former bodybuilder myself I know the particular challenges of lugging 200+LBS up a hill. Even when I go down to 190lbs it was still so much work on anything but short, punchy climbs. The extra weight and oxygen consumption is blatantly real.

      It's also a case of type 2 muscle fibres (fast twitch/ power) being far less efficient than type 1 (slow twitch/ endurance). Power athletes tend to build a physique around delivering maximal power at the cost of endurance.

    I have been wondering about almost this scenario (ie weightlifter instead of a bodybuilder) since I was 17. It was a pleasant suprise to see both doing relatively well - good sportsmanship, humor and pride got me.

    Great Video. I'm no where close to Brad's build but recently took 2 weeks off to rest my shoulders. This is how I found the great GCN team. I picked a different GCN session for 21 days straight, dropped 20 pounds doing so. I now train on my indoor trainer 6 days a week for an hour or more but I'm back to working out doing HIIT training with power blocks weights 3 times a week. Like Brad said the cardio is toffee than expected so I've stuck with it. I have noticed a difference in my muscular build. I'm hooked on the GCN training. I recommend it to everyone

As I was new to the workouts I started with 15-20 minute workouts, gradually worked my way up to the hour long sessions and at times I've felt really good, I doubled up and did back to back videos. I took a note book and logged my calories, distance, odometer, etc. Best of luck to you. Let me know how you do?

    What I found most interesting is when they talked about the amount of calories under full steam. This was in the range of a big day in the mountains and seems to be a natural limit of how much energy you can put through your body. Would be interesting to compare Brad in the gym vs. Ollie in the mountains vs. Mark Beaumont riding steady for 24h

      Body builders have a really tight understanding of their caloric/macro needs; almost annoyingly so. If they are too light they don't get the gains they want. If they are too heavy then they have to cut fat even harder nearing competition.

If you're in caloric deficit you're not building muscle and if you are over the maintenance calories you do, but if you overdo it you're going to get more fat than muscle. To optimize the process you usually cycle between deficit (cutting), surplus (bulking) and maintenance (usually for recovery period during deload weeks both during cutting and bulking phases.).

      Remember that a big day in the mountains is perhaps 5 or 6 hours of exercise at maybe 300-400 watts consuming mainly highly calorie dense and easily digested carbs. Body builders train maybe 90 mins in the gym on a bulking phase with perhaps a bit of light cardio and consume a totally different protein-centric diet, and to
      look like Brad some exogenous substances.
      As far as a natural limit to how many calories you can put through your body, cross channel swimmers expend 900-1000 calories per hour for around 11-14 hours and some people do double crossings so no 7000 is not the limit.

      Wanna hear a blackpill? You lifespan barring trauma and disease isn't measured in years, days or seconds. No its best measured in caloric throughput. There is a reason why top athletes rarely live past 75, eating and exercising like an athlete, about 2 or 3 times more than normal person for 10 to 20 years during your active career means that you burn up your longevity in roughly the equal amount. At the other side of the spectrum there are people who live over 100 years and they almost always report the same thing: they unknowingly have throughout their lives lived on a intermittent fasting diet at what many would consider near starvation.Their fire burned dimmer but longer.

    You can convert quite quickly from muscle man to cyclist. My son was a power lifter and rugby player weighing around 97 kilos back in 2019. He took up Triathlon and achieved a sub ten and a half hour time in the 2022 Hamburg Ironman. He is still built like cage fighter, but has gained incredible endurance through cycling and running

    I used to be a track and field sprinter and do weights before I got into cycling. The power certainly helps in sprinting on the bike, even if the form is bad, but I really feel the drag on the climbs.

      Just shows how specific fitness is. Fitness is combinations of strength, flexibility, speed, stamina, flexibility and balance. Body builders only use cardio to warm up and stay lean, focussing on strength, low reps and fast twitch muscles, like sprinters. Cyclists are endurance, aerobic, slow twitch focused. Average pro cyclist is about 72 kgs, which is light or lean for a body builder.

      I think those muscles require so much oxygen very quickly, honestly I used to wonder why runners look like they're starving lol but I changed my mind after seeing how much they can achieve.

      if you start doing leg exercises your max power will increase almost within days. I started doing it myself. I gained around 100w and only did one 10 minute weightlifting workout per week at most, and I've been lifting 15kg less than my bodyweight, most people lift the same as their body weight at least.

      that's definitely part of it you could hear him wheezing almost instantly meanwhile Olle's breathing barely changed. the wattage output on the stationary though was pretty impressive. you could also see how much trouble he was having balancing on the bike and I think that inefficiency played a lot into it as well. I think he could improve a lot by increasing his VO2 max and control on the bike. still I think the sheer muscle mass will always keep him from being good at it like you say it just takes too much oxygen to keep all that going, Plus in terms of efficiency on a bike the only muscles you really use is your back and legs, and even that, I used to hike a lot as a teenager but as an adult I've done a lot more cycling, and if I have to walk to work because of a mechanical issue of the bike, it's very obvious that I haven't been hiking enough. you use those muscles in completely different ways and it becomes very specialized. I would have thought that my hiking wouldn't have been so out of shape considering I spend the day at work walking, but clearly it's not the same somehow.

    If Brad is up for it, I'd love to see him train bike for 3 months with guidance from you guys, and come back to the same hill and see how much time he shaved off. Would be cool to see how adaptable the human body is.

      With the right training, Brad would cut his time. But would he like the idea of dropping body weight? With bodybuilders, it's all about getting as massive as possible.

    Do a all-round cycling test, downhill, uphill and sprint against that guy will be fun... A track and field 400meters to 800meters runners would be a great challenge to 👌🏼

      Track field test dont really show how bodybuilding and cycling is different. Bodybuilder can made huge power output and can mope floor with any cyclist on short track and even longer dont really show different since he can just keep his output for while and aerodynamics dont really slow him ennogh.
      But hill is ultimate test its test how power and weight work agains other and how thingly cyclist with low weight can beet much more weighty oponent with bigger power output.

I know who hoogland and lavresein are to... I want to see it because it should be fun watching the great and funny personalitys of the gcn guys doing this challenge...       I'm tall and not like Brad, but do have some muscle. Mainly ride a velomobile, and had someone stopin front of me and get out agressively on one occasion (he was angry because I was in the middle of the road; I didn't want to let him pass me on blind bends because I don't want to be pushed off the road at 50 kph, so I was waiting for the straight section).
      I wasn't planning to fight, but in a velomobile there's not really any way to protect yourself and he was blocking off most of the road in front of me. The dude didn't expect 6'4" and 100 kg to get out of that thing so rapid, so he changed his mind, got back in and left with screaming tires 😂

    How amazing is humans are!
    One can’t open the jar and gets up the hill in three minutes and another can open jars by just looking at them but needs 11 minutes to climb the same hill!!
    Nature is so beautiful however training is the key lesson here as both cyclist and bodybuilder smashed it in their own field.
