Does cycling cause erectile dysfunction in males? Is getting a numb penis while cycling a bad thing? And, can cycling lead to an increased risk of getting prostate cancer? In this video, Si put these questions to leading urologist Anthony Koupparis, who gave some very interesting answers around the subject. The video gives mostly good news (we can all let out a sigh of relief) but also highlights some instances where further medical attention would definitely be advised. We hope you can all learn a lot from this video and continue to enjoy riding your bikes.

I have a great solution for numbness while riding.
Just stand up on your pedals every once in a while to let blood flow through. That’s what I do and I don’t suffer any numbness.

I've been riding all my life and I'm 64 and very healthy thank God no problem!!!!!
when I started cycling I had a traditional road cycling saddle - Selle San Remo and I would certainly have numbness and pain after longer rides of 1h - it certainly stopped me from longer rides - I purchased a Selle San Marco Max Flite with center cut-out an have NEVER looked back - numbness was GONE - rides of 3-4 hours followed - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the central cut-out for everyone experiencing these problems - it was a world of difference
Props to Si for being so open!
All you MAMILS out there please listen to the advice in this great video and understand that heart disease can show itself in many many ways. It sneaks up on you and leaves its calling card when you get that gripping pain in your chest. Good job GCN
A flat, firm saddle like a Selle Royal Seta (not expensive) or equivalent, that is appropriately sized to provide correct support to your particular sit-bones. This effectively elevates the perineum out of the fray. Also, a 3-ish degrees nose-down attitude of the saddle keeps the saddle nose a little bit lower and again, out of the equation. Once I discovered this not so obvious solution, all discomfort became a thing of the past. Beyond this, correct crank length is another significant aspect of this situation. A crank that is too long causes over extension of the knee and consequently, exaggerated movement of the hips. I'm 5'10" (178cm) and 170mm cranks are vastly more comfortable for me than the typical 172.5 or 175 that come as standard fitment on frames recommended for my stature.

GCN isn’t dicking about with this subject.
In all seriousness, thank you for making a video about this serious health subject. Personally have only had minor issues(slight numbness especially during cold rides), which were easily solved by a different saddle and a bike fit.
Cheers Niels!
Just curious - what do you mean by a bike fit? Did you take it to your LBS or something? Cheers
Rich Court I went to my LBS and had a so called retül(name of the brand that provides the system) bike fit. Not every LBS has a proper bike fitting system and or someone that is trained in using a bike fitting system though.
Hope this was helpful - cheers!
Dudes need to get serious and get over any hangups about 'checking down there'. I lost a cousin just over a year ago, at 53 to IHD, a condition that killed his father at 47..and our fathers are twins, I just turned 51. Hello..there's my wakeup call. Whilst I was getting a heart check, the doc says I best get 'the other check'. So that took care of a dilemma (in my own mind) of a digit in the widget, or do I just wing it and hope for the best. Knowing is better than wondering. Let's stop dying for a sake of a little bit of self imposed pride.

REALLY REALLY good way to raise the prostate cancer awareness and also how important is a healthy life to prevent other diseases. Congratulations for the good job
Thanks Si for a great presentation on a subject that pretty much all men are or should be concerned about. As we get past that all encompassing 50 mark it's really vital to have a check up once every couple of years to every year as time marches on. Research and treatment for prostate cancer has improved by leaps and bounds in the last 30 years and although it led to our father's passing, it's good to know that his sons (i.e. my brothers and I) don't have to suffer the same fate. I've experienced the numbness in the 'undercarriage' while riding my bike on rollers and solved it with a few layers of chamois like soft cloth between me and the saddle. Well done with an important subject!
This is really high-value content. The subject matter is presented with humour but still the maturity that it deserves. Thanks guys!

Nice work Simon.
Thanks Bob, hopefully we can get more people talking
The disease is much more common in countries where meat and dairy products are dietary staples than in countries where the basic diet consists of rice, soybean products, and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cole slaw, or sauerkraut. The underlying factor linking diet and prostate cancer is probably hormonal.
Quit the meat dairy and eggs and you will cut your chances of getting prostate cancer short.

I've noticed that this happens over long distances, long duration with a single posture. Easiest way out, tilt the seat downwards in front by a bit and it should ease the pressure down there. For MTBs and hybrid cycles it shouldn't be a problem based on their cushioning and shock absorbers.
Very important video, thanks a lot GCN
This is intelligent, well presented and useful content about a very important topic. Personally, I know 4 men who have lived with prostate cancer...one of them succumbed to it...none of them cyclists. A commendable video.
That's too much, was there any pattern to their lifestyle?
No pattern. One of them was my father, but we lost him to stroke in January this year, aged 75.
@@Hunter_Bidens_Crackpipe_
The pattern is well known from regional studies: the western high fat diet. Prostate cancer is a rare disease in countries with better diets.
Big thanks to GCN and especially Simon for addressing this issue so openly and honestly. As someone who works for a cancer charity, these issues, especially among men, are still not talked about enough. Keep up the good work!

This is what i have been waiting for years! These simple but practical videos and exciting content help to bring GCN to a new level. Love you guys
I used to get numbness on every ride and was worrying about the long term effects.
Thank you GCN for shedding some light into this matter.
Since my dad died of prostate cancer earlier this year I hope you all stay healthy and have many miles on the saddle still to come.
Jay Lumbago did u ever fix the numbness problem?
Yes. I went from a Fizik Antares which came with my new bike to a Specialized Power which has a big cut out. That solved the problem.
But I used to have pressure and a little numbness before on all of my bikes. What was helping there was a small adjustment in the saddle position, maybe lower the saddle a bit or tilt down the nose slightly and of course use every possibility to pedal out of the saddle, for example accelerating after a narrow corner or passing over bridge.
Sorry for your loss. Adjusting your saddle would be the best solution
After 12 months cycling I can say in my experience its the opposite.
More leg power and massive stamina. 🙃🙃😉😆

On longer rides, I get out of the saddle every five miles and ride for half a mile while standing. This lets the blood flow back to where it needs to be.
Oooor you just buy a propper saddle
@ Agreed, nobody has been able to come up with a normal saddle yet, even recumbents won't get you far due to improved venous circulation in legs.
I will say post height playa big game and saddle better have a open channel for sure plus that saddle nose tilt can't be forgotten !!

Great down-to-earth video; very much appreciate.
This is a very helpful and informative upload. I'm 65 and 3 years ago diagnosed with a trace of what appears to be a benign prostate cancer, it hasn't advanced and my PSA levels are fine. Up until 10 years ago I cycled quite a lot. Now I've just ordered a new bike as I miss cycling and want to get fit again, so the reassurances given in the video are great news. I think I will however invest in a Brooks saddle, which should afford greater comfort and minimise any potential irritation.
