- In this video, I choose what I believe to be the winner of each generation... with a catch! It is based on the criteria of what people will have the most fun playing going forward. So, this isn't simply a list of the best selling consoles or even necessarily a list of which consoles were most popular back in the day.

Ive been on a PS2, Gamecube, Xbox and Dreamcast kick the last few months. All in all, i think this was the greatest generation for games. Its crazy how many absolute classics came out during this time.
It's my favorite generation, too. All four consoles had so many great exclusive games and didn't fear to be creative. And it was the last generation where the full game was still on the disk, no downloading, no bug fixes, no dlc's.
I agree, 6th generation was the best. Add in Game Boy Advance & Neo Geo Pocket Color and just with these half a dozen systems there's more good games than the last two generations combined, honestly.
5th generation systems were pretty stacked too though, a close second place.

Could be right, it's when 3D games development reached their peak. There are no wrong answers, I personally feel that those who enjoyed the transition between the 16-bit to the tail end of the 32-bit era experienced the biggest jump and paradigm shift of the gaming industry. From 2D to full 3D gameplay with so new genres that became staples of the media to this day. There's a canyon in difference from Sonic 1/SMW to Gran Turismo 2, Tomb Raider III, Burning Rangers, Medal of Honor, Crash Bandicoot 3, Super Mario 64 and many others. True that the 128-bit era is also brilliant, but not really innovative.

I disagree with the Gamecube being the winner of the 6th generation, because the Playstation 2 had a lot more games, a lot more longevity and the use of proper DVDs over mini discs, usually meant the multiplatform releases were more optimized than on Gamecube.
People still play GameCube games on the regular. Games like Mario kart, Mario party, Zelda ww, Pokémon, and smash bros. I loved ps2 games especially Shadow of the colossus but most people go back to play GameCube games now days way more than ps2 games.

Speaking of bangers, this is another banger video.👍 I think you nailed it on every generation... except maybe for the 6th. I do love the gamecube, but my personal preference is Ps2. But this is your list so I digress. But I do also need to point out that of all the 6th geners, only the Dreamcast still gets new games... just sayin'.
UK viewer here. I'm 50 so I was getting started in 1982. Over here the ZX Spectrum was more than enough for us. It has hundreds of games and they could be duplicated easily. The C64 was probably the next popular one. I never ever seen a NES until 1991.
This doesn't just apply to people in the UK, but in many parts of the world, the 8 bit era was defined by home computer games. While Americans were playing very good but expensive NES games, the rest of us were buying budget computer games on cassette at the local newsstand for a few dollars each. And the catalogue of 8 bit computer games is vast indeed. Is it weird to have grown up without knowing about Paradroid, Jet Set Willy, Head Over Heels, Elite, Laser Squad etc...?
It was weird being an American with a PC buying games in the late 80s/early 90s and seeing there were versions for other computers like the Amiga and ST. Those computers barely sold here, even though they were really popular overseas and they were made by U.S. companies.
I remember computer games being pretty popular here too, but indeed, it was different in other parts of the world :)
@@RetroBirdGaming- there is a huge 8 bit scene that people who never knew the British computers never saw. But I also know there is a whole other scene on Japanese home computers that we were largely unaware of.
@@kingedwin - conversely I think very few people outside the US had any interest in the PC as a gaming platform until Doom, so there's a whole lot of PC games we passed over.

I grew up in the UK with a Master system and its great to experience the NES now as an adult with no nostalgia goggles. Argubly a way worse library than the NES but I will still have a soft spot for the poor lil Master System though.
You guys in the UK were lucky. In the UK there were loads more master system games than in the US.
"poor ill Master System"? you probably didn't enjoy the console, maybe played 2 or 3 games. The Master System had barely any third party support and even though, with 90% of SEGA's own efforts, the console stands tall with its own unique, exclusive and almost 16-bit visuals. Deep Duck Trouble Starring Donald Duck and Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck are nice examples, Gangster Town and more are among the best Lightgun games of the era, Masters of Combat shows that 8-bit could do 1 on 1 fighting games properly, Ninja Gaiden looks beautiful but can't dream of reaching the NES soundtrack, and this is just the tip of the iceberg, the SMS is far, far from poor/ill, it was a tremendous console.
With that, now that we have access to literally all games from previous generations, it's clear that the Famicom/NES has the edge, it just had all third party support and with the improved cartridge chips, developers made impressive games for the console, both brilliant machines and unique in their own right, but biased comments such as "no nostalgia glasses"? Right, seems a very suggestive opinion, the masses got you and you believed them.

It’s so hard for me to do this without Nostalgia Goggles. I grew up a Sega kid because the Master System is what my parents chose to buy me instead of the NES and I adored that console. I had a 2600 previously and the Master System felt like such a big upgrade I just fell in love and became extremely loyal to Sega. To this day even though I play NES, SNES, and GameCube games the ones I come back to the most are Sega.
Retro Bird I do have a question. On a daily basis how do you decide what to play? I sometimes get so overwhelmed with my choices that I feel paralyzed and my collection is nothing compared to yours.

I don't know if Retro Bird will see your post, but I will tell you how I do it. I basically pick ONE GAME that I'm going to play that day, and play it until I beat it. If I don't set that limit, I'll be browsing 100 games for 5 mins at a time. No. Pick one, get stuck in and beat that sucker! It feels way better than browsing.
Theres also the fact that a lot of iconic games didnt come out on pal nintendo systems, e.g., the final fantasy series. If i had to pick between nes and sms as a pal user i would pick sms as at least i get phantasy star. Likewise for megadrive.
@@benevans7564 that's interesting, I never thought about region differences. I imagine in places like Brazil, you'd be Sega all day!
@benevans7564 Phantasy Star on the SMS was my first RPG and to this day playing through that and beating it as a kid (with no guides or published dungeon maps) is one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of my life.
I'm from the UK. At the time it didn't feel weird not having the NES, looking back it feels a bit odd that, considering how powerful Nintendo were, that they weren't more popular. That said the Master System had plenty of games over here so I never really missed the NES, I never experienced the NES so never felt I was missing out. Consequently I have no nostalgia for the console and mine rarely gets played.
The SMS delivered, kids who had the chance to play Double Dragon, Castle of Illusion, Black Belt, Sonic titles, the best Lightgun games and many other exclusives just didn't need other consoles. SEGA made an extra effort to keep the console alive and thinking that its library of 300~ titles was almost entirely managed by SEGA themselves it's astonishing.
I had thé SMS in Canada. It's sad because it was not properly advertised and backed financially back then. Most of the great games came after the demise of it in 1989 here.
I was the only kid with one of my friend to have it and the rest was NES bound, but we were playing each other consoles.
Today, I miss playing both consoles games I enjoyed back then with a special place in my heart for Wonderboy.
@@codenamezz9993 Here in the US, nobody I knew owned one and nobody I knew even talked about them. I literally heard more people talking about TurboGrafx and the Atari Jaguar than SMS.
Great video! I only respectfully disagree with the Gamecube over the PS2. I totally agree it is an underrated console with some amazing games that are still loved today, but the PS2 had such an huge library that is hard to beat. Especially when it comes to RPGS, fighting, sports, and racing games. Gamecube has a few great entries, but PS2 has many great entries.
That and also horror games but none the less alot of great genres and games for pretty much everyone

GameCube doesn't compare to the PS2 at all. You'd have to live under a cube shaped rock to think otherwise.
Pretty great overview, only difference I would make would be to give Xbox 360 some credit it absolutely ruled online gaming during that period and had some of the best shooters of the era
Disagree about the 360 not having enough exclusives. Especially at the time, 360 had a ton of exclusives that only saw PS3 ports much later. It also had the best versions of multiplat games, sometimes by a huge margin, as well as significantly better online play for the era.
Remember... the criteria was what will be the most fun going forward. So, online play and temporary exclusives aren't as relevant. The multiplats being better is a good point, and one that I considered. I actually think that's probably the best case to be made for the 360 since it had that advantage for a pretty decent chunk of that generation.
Between my family having a Xbox360 and later getting a PS3 and my cousin's having PS3 and later getting a XB360 the difference between versions was almost always negligible and I can't remember any example of it actually mattering on playing games on either system. If anything it was usually mildly worse on our 360 which sometimes had hard drive issues. But the PS3 exclusives were miles more interesting. Blu-rays also hold up better, which was/is great for used games. 360 timed exclusives also didn't affect us since we rarely had access or funds to buy the newest games and there was already a decent existing back-catalogue to choose from. Buying the newest releases at the time was also worse as an experience since this when patches and updates started becoming the norm. I also can't think of any scenario I noticed online play was better on 360. It felt like it just cost more.
Xbox arcade games were really great on the 360. I don't imagine those ever made it to the PS3.
NES, Genesis, PS1, PS2, XB360, PS4, and PS5 are my generation 3-9 picks based on my personal experience having lived through the lifecycles. Caveat being “At this point” since I am merely mortal 👾
I like how the PS4 and XBOX One eventually got upgrades, whereas the WiiU arrived pre-downgraded. What a generation. 😂

@@GreenEmperor The wii u is still more powerful than the og Wii. However the game selection was kind of lacking on 3rd party titles compared to what we got on Gamecube & Wii once u remove the shovelware from the equation. The Switch is basically a Wii U upgraded library, but with 3rd party releases + all the things that makes the Switch great. The Wii U is what I call the rough draft paving the way for the switch.
Now that you mention it, the OG Wii was downgraded as time went on. Losing the ability to play GameCube games and use GameCube controllers was not cool.
@@ben501stthe PS3 did that too. Original models were mostly backwards compatible with PS1 (and maybe PS2???) games. When this changed I missed the memo and bought one only to discover that they were no longer backwards compatible.

You didn't even mention the OG Xbox in the 6th gen segment. Microsoft had a lot of interesting exclusives, and the console's power was not something to be ignored.
OG Xbox has a weak library with almost nothing exclusive worth playing. The PS2 library destroys the Xbox.
People simply weren't around to appreciate the glory that was the og xbox. Not only was it the best console of its generation, there's no other generation winner with a bigger gap between 1st and 2nd place.
@@magic3383 As someone who was very much around to play the OG Xbox you are incorrect. The massive library of games available on the PS2 compared to the paltry offering on Xbox makes the Xbox the obvious looser. You couldn't even play DVDs on the stupid thing without purchasing an extra piece of hardware. The duke controller was trash and there are four exclusive games on the system worth playing and only one of those hasn't been ported to other systems. The OG Xbox isn't even as good as the GameCube when it comes to console exclusive games.
I thought you were gonna mention each consoles controllers too, that would make for an interesting video!
For the first generation, I give props to the Magnavox Odyssey. It was the first of it's kind and while very simplistic, it helped lay the foundation for future consoles.
There ought to be a "3.5 Generation" that includes the TurboGrafx! Great video RB! :)
Turbografx was a competitor to the megadrive and snes, so still a 4th gen console. It just happened to be released before them, just like the Dreamcast still is a 6th gen console despite coming out in 98/99.
It was powerful enough to run a competent port of Street Fighter II, it belongs in the same generation as the Genesis.
Oh I know...I just meant that it ought to have a special generation classification all of it's own. Very happy to still have mine! :)
HOT TAKE/PREDICTION: If Nintendo releases a new console in the next year or two, it will be considered part of the 9th gen and the Switch will get slotted into 8th gen alongside the WiiU (which will be appropriate since so many of the Switch's biggest titles are actually just Wii U ports).

UK here : In the mid to late 80's the only thing I knew was c64 and master system - I only remember seeing the nes in my grandma's catalogue and did kinda want one but they were so expensive!!
The nes did actually gain some good sales here in the UK but this was in the 90's when the snes was out and the nes was being sold at less than half the price of a snes, as a budget console - I think a lot of kids who wanted the snes may have got bought an Nes by their parents! instead!!
Okay, I'm going to say it. GameCube fanboys (and girls,) are a cult.
There's no world where GameCube compared to the PS2.
It's not even close.
Another thing I have noticed is that Americans tend to remember the NES versions of arcade games, while those in the UK and elsewhere will be more familiar with the arcade version. We couldn't afford games consoles around here when I was a kid (we sometimes rented one for a weekend) but there were so many arcades. It's hard to overstate how many, arcade machines everywhere.
also because there were more "computer" consoles in the UK,
Amstrad Pc and the like... that could play more arcade port vs the NES ... computers that which were NOT popular as much in north america (who had amstrad here? and those late ATARI computers before the Jaguar?). In canada i didn't even know they existed. Nobody I knew had a TurboGrafx 16 (i know PatTheNESPunk loves the european version/jap... I forget what it is... oh PC engine, literally ook me a minute)
That's unfortunate because there was a weird phenomenon that took place. Often times, the NES version on an arcade was SUPERIOR on the NES. Not in the graphics department, but in the gameplay department.
A couple exceptions to this were "Donkey Kong," oddly enough, and "Ghosts n' Goblins."
Americans are biased towards nintendo. This guy gave the edge to the gamecube when we all know the ps2 CRUSHED the competition that gen. I know it's his opinion and his list, but still. It's undeniable that Americans have a huge hard on for nintendo. Look at how many American retro channels somehow remember the nintendo 64 and barely even mention the ps1, while the later outsold the former by 5 to 1.
Fun fact : if you didn't grow up in the era, you might not know that KILLER INSTINCT 1 in arcade was the best, it slayed Mortal Kombat AND Street Fighter !@@thinkhector

American here. I wouldn't even hardly consider Nintendo as contenders vs the 1st 2 PlayStations.
I think it skews heavily because most nerds online grew up with N64 or Gamecube, so they played Mario and Zelda (the worst iterations in my opinion,) and are stuck looking through rose colored glasses.
N64 and GameCube had like 10 good games each while psx and PS2 had hundreds.
It's not even close.
I was complaining in the Drain Addict channel how much I was waiting for this video.
My last console generation was Wii/Xbox360/PS3.
I played the Xbox360 a lot mostly because of all the great homebrew games and online games like Castlevania Harmony of Despair.
I probably played Wii more than the PS3 just because of the online store that had TG16 games.
The PS3 as far as I was concerned was a BluRay player.
I tapped out after that generation realizing that console gaming wasn’t for me anymore.
Now it’s FPGA and reliving the glory days of console gaming of times past.
I just want to say that I absolutely love every video you make, always a happy surprise when I see a new one pop up in my sub box!
How about a Atari 2600 Games that will always be fun episode? My personal list would include almost all of the Activision games, keep in mind that I'm not that old to actually had enjoyed the Atari in its heyday, I mostly played it sporadically during the 90's and nowadays via emulation, but it's spartan technology has so much charm to it.
To me the consoles would be 60/40 preference from each generation like the SMS>NES, MD>SNES, SAT>PS, XB/PS2, then the PSP and only PC afterwards.

Nintendo Switch is considered 8th Gen along with PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U. Switch 2 will be part of the 9th Gen along with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Switch was basically the Wii U refresh like PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

From the UK and... no, it wasn't weird. The NES was more of an oddity, since it came out so incredibly late. I owned a Master System, which was THE dominant 8 Bit console, but at the time the NES finally launched, we also had 16 Bit computers like the Amiga and Atari ST. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, by the time the NES did launch, Nintendo was already showing off early demos of their 16 Bit machine in Japan. Having said that, in hindsight, I really wish the NES had have been launched over here a lot sooner, as I feel that we missed out on a whole generation of classic Nintendo games, which would've been nice to experience back then, when they were new.
Well i just broke two bones in my ankle and am currently bedridden so i think a retro bird video is just what the doctor ordered.

Great choices, most of which I agree with. Here are some of my personal choices as well. For the 8th Gen, I play my Wii U so much more than the PS4 so I would go Wii U but I understand going PS4. For Gen 6 as much as I love the Gamecube, PS2 takes it here. There are so many classic and diverse selections for this system. It does everything well and the backwards compatibility and built in dvd player really put it over the top. For the 5th Gen, I like the Saturn the most as well but totally get the PS1 coming out ahead. So many great masterpieces for the system. Now for the 4th Gen. I would go Snes over Genesis BUT if you include the Sega CD and 32X on the Genesis and their libraries included as well, I will go with that Tower of power all day over the Snes. That Sega Cd library is under rated and put it over along with the genesis games and the 10 or so good 32x games are the bonus cherry on top.
The Mega Drive still comes on top by itself over the SNES, even multiplatform games play and feel better, have the better aspect/resolution too.
Personally I'd say 55/45 and keep in mind that as far as having fun in multiplayer the SNES comes on top, but in hindsight, I'd go for the Mega Drive. It's library is more diverse, not over relying on RPGs, when games had the same names, each console usually had their own version and I personally prefer SNES Aladdin over the Disney's version for the MD. Still it's a very hard choice, I prefer Final Fight 3 over Streets of Rage 3, but SOR 1 and 2 beat FF1 and FF2, SEGA has 3 Road Rash , Nintendo has three masterpiece DKC games, I feel this comment would never end lol!
Just a side-note, while my brother and I enjoyed MKII and WWF Arcade on the SNES back then, today we can see the MD has overall the better game, with usually the less colors and sound. There's a comparison in VCDECIDE's channel showing clearly that devs could take out more juice from the Mega Drive than the SNES for the MKII, for instance, it's worth checking out, specially the sprites comparison video.
@@roberto1519 Thanks for the awesome reply and great description. I hear ya in a lot of those examples but for me personally, I still gotta go Snes in a one on one. Just the shear number of absolute classics on the system does it for me. It really takes the addition of the Sega Cd and 32x for it to go over the top. I actually prefer Snes Aladdin as well over the genesis despite most folks saying the other way. I too prefer Final Fight 3 over SOR 3. I prefer SOR 2 over Final Fight 2 but I’ll take that Sega Cd port of Final Fight over SOR 1 and Final Fight on Snes any day. Road Rash is good but honestly, I only own the 3DO version as I feel it is just so much better than the Genesis games. Those 3 DKC games are masterpieces. I have 100 percented all 3 of them. Well 101 on dkc, 102 on dkc2, and 103 and 105 on two different playthroughs of dkc3. Man! I was the same way back in the day with MK2 and Wrestlemania the Arcade game. I had both for Snes and enjoyed them immensely. Now though, I own both for the 32X and wow they are so much better for that system. I really depends on the game. Still, games such as King of Dragons, Knights of the Round, the two pocky and Rocky games, the Mega Man X trilogy, the breath of fire series, the lufia series, all of Nintendo’s outtings, the Quintet trilogy of Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma just put the Snes over for me. Getting those Genesis additions though with having access to Snatcher, both Lunar games, Popful Mail, Lords of Thunder, shining force cd, and tons of other great games for the sega cd, and then almost arcade perfect ports of afterburner 2 complete and space harrier for the 32x send it back the other way. There are so many other games I could list for each side but I guess at the end of the day, it is all subjective.
@@gametourny4ever627 I hear you, and you are 100% right, I mean, there's no wrong answer here, we're talking about two giants and this kind of conversation would probably take a lifetime without having a clear cut winner/better.
I enjoy the 32-bit Road Rash and played it on all platforms it was released, even on PC, today with the ability to overclock the 3DO CPU to 200% on Opera (Retroarch core), this is the better version, all later ports are good but not as refined as the original. Same for all DKC games, completing them, specially the third is a great experience. Still the 32-bit version lacks in some aspects, for instance, RR3 has like 7 totally different stages (countries) and many weapons you can store and switch during races. With the current improvements, all 16-bit games runs much smoother like 30FPS smooth and there's MD+ support for soundtracks. While 32-bit RR was developed with 3 areas in its rendering engine, that is coutry/field/city/coast and these interchange among all tracks you race through the game. They should have added much more varied tracks, rain, night, snow, different countries and weapons to store/switch etc, gameplay-wise it's just 100% fun, though, I only think there was much more potential there.
Though I much rather play SOR1 over FF1 or FF2, I like the SNES FF games but SOR1 is still more nuanced and has the better atmosphere and specially soundtrack, its coop gameplay adds to that. As for KOD, love the SNES version as well.
Have you noticed that while WWF for the 32X runs at 30FPS, which is a bit odd, it looks great but the base Genesis version runs much smoother, looks the worse of them all, but plays the best. I still always set the controllers to use the SNES layout in any device I play this game.
As for the other games you mentioned for the SNES, Sega CD and even the 32X, I agree, love Shining Force series and all that stuff. Personally, the Mega Drive is usually the console I choose, over the years I've noticed that it has smoother controls, multiplatform games usually comes with the benefit of the expanded horizontal area that 2D gaming benefits a lot from, an example is Jim Power I played on the SNES back then, there's a recent restored/release for the MD that shows this resolution difference and believe me, some games require that as programmers made them that way, this game is absolutely hard on the SNES, enemies come at you out of the blue.
As I said, the list would go on and on, but believe me, I totally understand your pick, the SNES is the best console from Nintendo in my opinion, and the Mega Drive is just as great, we're splitting hairs here :D.
Till recently each console was so different I don't compare- different strokes thing. SNES specs lend it to slower story driven stuff. Genesis specs led to more actiony arcade stuff. 64 was more huge collectathons and FPSs while PS1 was more RPG and action. I like seeing the different flavors of every library, and how devs drove their games based on platform. It's good that now, no matter what console you have, you get most of the same games and aren't punished (other than Switch ports startin to hit a dead end, Xbox is missing a lotta Japanese and indie stuff, but if it's multiplat you're usually safe).

I much appreciate the props given to Colecovision. Every time I fire up my CV I feel as if I’m back in an actual arcade/movie theater lobby, etc. in the early 80s - a personal happy place. Grab a Super Action Controller or y-connect just about any 2nd gen db9 stick and it’s 8-bit bliss without the quarters or sticky carpet!
I play a first generation Pong clone now and then! Here in the UK, NES was the first console I knew of and saw, and I loved it. It wasn’t the first one I owned though, the first one I owned was a GX4000 second hand thing with one single game… I was grateful for it but wanted a NES… I got a NES around the time the SNES was out or maybe had already been out a fair while, I don’t remember, but I was so happy to have Mario Bros 3.

Where I differ from Retro Bird's list is that I think the Genesis holds up just a little better with games I actually still want to play and better representatives for more genres. Plus, my favorite controller of all time is the Genesis 6-button controller. But I can concede that Genesis vs. SNES is by far the toughest call. Since both consoles are incredible in their own ways.
With the Xbox360, I can't think of a single PS3 exclusive that elevates the console. Of course, there really aren't any on the Xbox360, either. Unless we count INITIAL exclusives where there were a lot. Additionally, the Xbox360 typically had the better graphics of the two. And finally, I just think the controller for the Xbox360 is more comfortable and pretty much nails what modern games (1st/3rd person games) near perfectly. I think there's a reason the XBoxOne controller barely changed, and I don't see Microsoft doing anything with their controller but minor tweaks. The PS controller sticks feel a little awkward and the trigger buttons aren't as satisfying.
As a kid with time, the SNES. As an adult with responsibilities, Genesis.
I think the Gamecube is a distant third for its generation. While it had unique first party games, third party support either wasn't there, or you'd get the worst port of a multi-platform game.
I'll give it second place. XBOX was a beast but at the end of the day it excelled moreso at playing the same games just better, it's exclusives are so far behind the GC and PS2 it's a bit sad. To it's credit, the PS2 and GC both had obscenely good exclusives to where they might just be the top two of all time in that regard. None the less, the PS2's library for just masterpieces is nearly endless, I have to go with it for that gen.
Somehow I think of the GameCube as the target console for games tied-in with movies such as the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series, even if the PS2 probably received even more sequels, and obviously the Xbox also received quite a few. It's possibly because I think of the GC as targeted to the same audiences of Harry Potter movies, maybe.
I see that some people say it received subpar ports at times, it's probably because developers didn't put the same effort, specially since it's presence in Japan was almost non-existent, only the PS2 there. With all that, I appreciate all of them and the GC has great exclusives.
My older brother had the original Xbox and my other two brothers had a PS2 each, I personally like the Xbox a bit more but in terms of library the PS2 crushes even the PS3/PS4, and it can also play PS1 games natively. Still, can you imagine if there was only ONE console at that generation and all companies made their games on it, let's say only the Xbox and Nintendo, SEGA, Sony and third parties developed games exclusively to it, the console had the most RAM, better CPU and easy development, wouldn't that had been great?
The GameCube was all over the place for multi-platform games. You had ugly, third-place ports like Need for Speed: Underground 2 and Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, but then it was the only console that could run Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Turok: Evolution, and LotR: The Two Towers at 60fps. Overall, it lands in the middle.
Similarly, the PS2's weaker performance made for some awful ports, but games were often developed for it first, giving it an advantage- see Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 for an extreme example, where its graphics almost look a generation ahead of the competition!
The Xbox had a bunch of unambitious and mediocre ports, but never any truly bad ones, so it was the safest bet.
@@3dmarth I think the Xbox could deliver those Star Wars, LotR and stuff, it had more muscle overall, actually it delivered DOOM 3 and Half-Life 2. But I think most issues with the GC is when developers looked at its numbers and they just didn't gave their all to it, they knew their profits margin were small on that platform. I think Simpsons: Hit & Run also runs and looks much better than the PS2 version, but those crazy button prompts drive me crazy when playing GC games today.

The Xbox clearly had higher specs on paper, but the GameCube sometimes outperformed it in reality- as to how/why this was the case, my best guess is that the GameCube's fixed-function GPU could do a lot of effects (like shadows, distortion, and various alpha layering) with less performance penalty than programming those effects using shaders.

I was born in 1987, so I'm a little young to have much history of the NES in the UK when it was a contemporary console, but until the mid-nineties, it seemed like everybody was playing different machines.
I knew kids who played on Mega Drives, SNESes and Windows PCs, but some people were still trucking on with the old 80s microcomputers like the Spectrum and Commodore 64, some had newer ones like the Atari ST and Amiga, and some only had a handheld like a Game Gear or Lynx (that *did* happen). I knew one kid who had a Mega CD - and later, both a 32X and Saturn. My parents were friends with a young couple who we'd visit, and they had a CD-i. Hotel Mario and Link: Faces of Evil are two of the first CD-ROM games I ever played.
My older brother had friends who had a NES, but I never saw one myself until much later. I don't think we thought much of it, since the market was so scattered already. It was pretty common knowledge that Nintendo and Sega had the best games, and even more so when stuff like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat came out (you don't want to see the European microcomputer versions), but you were lucky if you ended up with one.
Seems like we're pretty aligned in our opinions, but I feel about the same with the 360/PS3 as you do with the GeniSNES. While the PS3 took it at the end with exclusives there were a lot of great exclusives to start the 360 off, just a shame they didn't continue at the same rate.
Also for the GC/PS2/Xbox era I'd personally pick the PC as the winner, but I'm bias as that was the era I didn't get a console til much later. Heck I even played FF7 on PC, oddly enough ported by Eidos (who later was bought by & now has been sold by Square).

I hear ya. I'm a bigger fan of the N64 than most people. I really enjoy it, but I still feel like the PS1 is the overwhelming choice for most people. You are right though. N64 could have at least been mentioned. It wasn't to diss it. It's just sort of how the flow of the video turned out.
UK viewer, NES was roughly double the price US customers paid. Master System was a cheaper option so in my street there were several. Most people had Spectrum/Commodore, consoles never really took off until the 90s. NES was unobtainium 😂
Yes the NES was odd in the UK, I only ever remember seeing games for it in Boots (a pharmacy chain!) as I think they were one of the few places to sell it. As the game boy released it upped the NES popularity over here and Mario helped too. My mate had a NES I had a master system, I always thoughts the NES cartridges were massive as a kid lol
Gamecube was great, but it wasn't the winner. PS2 clearly won that gen by a mile, even though I much preferred the Dreamcast myself. But there is no way the Xbox 360 didn't win its generation. PlayStation's online offering was garbage. Slow and lacking features that Xbox Live had. Halo alone helps that generation win for Microsoft.
Great list! I actually would have the exact same list. I grew up during the early '90s and the battle between SNES vs. Genesis was quite an amazing time! I was a Genesis kid, but I was quite envious of all the amazing games the SNES had! Now I don't have to choose as I can play both! Sony was also quite a force to be reckoned with and I loved their games/systems as well.
Ultimately, every console I've owned has had some amazing games and I was never disappointed with any of them. If I were to pick a favorite console now, it would probably be the Switch as well. While its technical specs haven't aged the best, it has a great library of games (old and new) that I absolutely love!
Growing up in the 80s microcomputers dominated gaming with the C64 and Spectrum dominating- with games made and published by Ultimate Play the Game (later Rare), DMA (later Rockstar), Ocean and Psygnosis in the 80s and 90s which later had a major influence on consoles. (I also had an Acorn Electron- Acorn was successful the UK with their deal with BBC and most Junior Schools had a BBC micro) and then arcades. The Master System was in the right place at the right time as they were closer to the arcade experience than the micros (my first Master System game was Double Dragon because I played the arcade version at the same time).

Anything pre NES I have minimal opinions on, but for the rest…
3rd gen - NES - best console for the time, easily accessible and made consoles a household item
4th gen - SNES - never cared much for it but it’s the best for 4th gen
5th gen - N64 - Multiplayer party console of the 90’s and on and some of the best games ever made (SM64, LoZ OoT/MM, Mario Party 2)
6th gen - Much closer but I’d pick NGC because of the Nintendo games, but XBOX had Halo. PS2 was amazing too, ace combat holy trilogy and NFS:HP2 alone made it worth getting, not to forget the legend that is grand theft auto 3D games!
7th gen - Xbox 360, had Halo, ran most games better vs PS3… the Wii is great honestly, but the lack of HDMI and the need to set up the motion controls makes it not the top
After that I could care less about consoles (Switch is a gameboy console so it’s an exception)
PC is the right answer for the best… emulate them all and play for free!
Also, I own all these consoles so why choose?! 😆

The Xbox 360 was riding on the popularity of Halo. Once Halo started to go bad in 2012, there wasn’t much point in getting an Xbox anymore, even less so now that Halo is on PC. This probably explains why the 360 was by far the best-selling Xbox.
The idea that Game Cube tops the PS2 is a complete joke.
GameCube had phenomenal first-party games but very little for 3rd party support, and the format of the console didn’t lend itself to games with a lot of depth.
PS2, on the other hand, had the largest library of physical games ever released, plus it was backwards-compatible with nearly every PS1 game (the one time that mattered for home consoles). And unlike GameCube, the PS2 had incredible games in virtually every genre and far more immersive experiences as a result.

I had been thinking of this for some time ad your video comes up on. Well my take is different (being from a PAL region) so here it goes:
2nd Gen: Atari 2600
3rd Gen: SEGA Master System
4th Gen: SNES (very close second is Mega Drive/Geneses)
5th Gen: N64
6th Gen: GameCube (very close second is PS2)
7th Gen: PS3
8th Gen: Still undecided between PS4 or Switch. Yes I classify Switch a late coming 8th Gen console
I agree with your entire list, with the exception of Gamecube. I would put PS2 above Gamecube, because even though it is beloved now, PS2 sold so many units, and you can't underestimate the extreme value of having a DVD player built in, in an age when DVD players were around $200 (CAD)
the dvd player part was innovative for the time, but it doesn't do anything for the console's legacy as a game console. ps2 outsold the competition by a country mile, this is true, but it had inferior hardware, even compared to the older dreamcast. i briefly owned a ps2 and played some guitar hero on it; i can't say whether the software was that good, but my fondest gaming memories during my teenage years still remain the cube and not the ps2. that's my 10 cents.
The snes and megadrive (in my book) must be a tie!!
2 fierce rivals - 2 awesome consoles - and 2 library of games so awesome, similar but different to the other.
I could not pick one above the other and was glad I owned both in that gen!👍
1st generation: really before my time and I'm just a year away from 50.
2nd generation: all I had was the Commodore Vic-20 but I have been impressed by what I've seen of some Colecovision games.
3rd generation: we were a Sega Master System household and, honestly, I've barely even played anything on NES.
4th generation: first gen where we had the two main contenders (plus the Turbografx-16) but I generally preferred the way games played on Genesis, especially sports games like NHL '94.
5th generation: all I had was the Playstation although I did play a few games on N64 before my youngest brother moved out of the house.
6th generation: I own all of the major contenders: my heart's with Dreamcast, I have the most games for the PS2, but the XBox had some fantastic racing games including the first two Project Gotham Racing games (besides Metropolis Street Racer on Dreamcast), the first Forza Motorsport, and the best port of OutRun 2 considering the game was native to the Sega Chihiro arcade system which was essentially a souped-up XBox anyway. I'd probably still give it to PS2 for the JRPGs, but it's almost a coin-flip.
7th generation: I only ever had an XBox 360 which got more JRPGs than the original XBox did.
8th generation: I only ever had a PS4 and pretty much only play JRPGs on it.
9th generation: not about to make the jump and, unlike my financial situation only a year ago, I can more or less afford to buy a new console now but the always-online DRM in most of the racing games I want to play is a deal-breaker for me so I'm content with just sticking to playing JRPGs on PS4 for now.
Here's my list, including the handhelds of that generation:

I feel like i have to disagree on the ps3. So many playstation loyalists left for a generation, the xbox was so close in global sales, the wii sold so much more and was so influential PlayStation stole the motion controller idea, and when i think exclusives, most of the PS3's got more love after leaving the console. Heck I'd say the psp or ps2 were more influencial during the ps3s time in some markets

You're better than me, because logically I could never pit the Sega Genesis against the SNES. I couldn't with the NES and Master System either. They're like music I'm in the mood for, or food. You could talk to me all day about sound chips, bits, colours, and blast processing and it wouldn't change how I feel about every single one of those consoles.
These people who are like, "Yeah, I respect the NES but I was never into it, more of a Master System guy myself." Seriously? Why? Sure, there's preference, but there isn't that big of a difference between these consoles. And with the amount of objectively good (and similar) games on all of these systems, it's like they're purposely depriving themselves of innocuous fun.
I’ll tell you my experience. The Master System had way better graphics. Like miles better. The NES looked out of date. So why would I chose it?

I agree with MOST of your list (see the Genesis comment from before (I’m disappointed)) However as good as the few awesome games from the GameCube were, I’d still go with the PS2. Not for the sales part of it, but because there was a lot of everything for that system.
Between Xbox and PlayStation, I instinctively just say PS brand. The games that are the exclusives on either system: PlayStation “there’s God of War! There’s Spider-Man!! There’s Shadow of the Colossus!!!!”
Xbox: “we got Halo….”

I take one issue with this video and it's not the picks, but what you left out: handhelds. The Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Game Gear, Wonder Swan, Lynx, DS...etc. are ALL video game consoles...by definition! What you did was only choose from non-portable video game hardware.
Yeah, the intention wasn't to imply they aren't consoles. Rather that they belong in their own category. At least for the sake of this video. I was thinking about what a video like this that covers only handhelds would look like. Nintendo would be dominant haha.
SNES when I was a kid with lots of time. As an adult, the Genesis seems like it has more games I can get into quickly.
I have a RetroPie console so I play both. In some cases the genesis versions of games were more closer to the arcade than SNES ones.
Both systems had the same type of games with lots to choose from and lots of fun.

It's your list and that being considered and you have your personal biases, but it's weird to see you pick the gamecube over the ps2. I mean, by sheer quantity alone you could rule it on ps2 library the edge. But the controller is better, the physical media is better and the ps2 slim is arguably a better design as well. You can name 10 great games scoring 9/10 on the gamecube, but you can arguably name over 50 on ps2.

Trying to compare the "best" console of any generation is just the old("apples to oranges"; (or in your particular case: "apples to oranges; and nanners.") Lol. All of the classic consoles have their own strengths, weaknesses, exclusives; etc. I never even got to play any Turbo Grafx 16 games until I was in my 40's and I'm just realizing what I've been missing out on.
I honestly see the WiiU as a really late game 7th gen competitor as many games were late versions of 360/PS3 games, not PS4/XBONE games, vs Switch which actually does have a number of shared titles with 8th gen. I think it's mostly the Wii's fault being a souped up Gamecube at heart that had shared titles between both PS2 and PS3 making it a sort of half step generation. I see the same thing with the Saturn and Dreamcast in the 5th/6th gen. The Switch is also a bit weird being a hybrid. It's really like a 9th gen handheld and 8th gen home console.
I mostly agree on conclusions, except PS2. I'd probably pick Master System over NES too, but that has a lot more to do with being unfamiliar with the libraries overall. Picking between Switch and PS4 is hard but between Switch and PS5 I think likely PS5 since it has all the PS4 games too. Xbox has kinda self sabotaged 8th gen and 9th gen is just carrying it forward mostly. Time will seemingly obviously not favor XBSeries either though with having the most online dependencies.
