I’m just glad that one day I will look back at my life and say, you know what, I sat in a concert hall with Lyle mays sat at the piano/ keyboards. One of the greatest honours of my life. Rest in peace brother, you are so missed😢.
Lyle Mays was an amazing pianist, keyboards player, composer, and his ability to blend in with a band but also solo equally well is just astounding to me. I am so happy to have discovered him in recent years, but was so sad he passed away relatively young. :-(
Here's a little something you'll enjoy. I recorded this off the house desk at the Exit/In in 1978 when I was the staff mixer then. this is only an excerpt from a longer song that Pat announced as having no name at that point in time. ruclips.net/video/mmixXIcQZ2U/видео.html
Found him through a very talented musician/friend also a composer/jazz pianist before he passed actually quite a few years ago but relatively late so glad! So sad when he died.
This is a classic example why this art form will NEVER die or become outdated....as long as musicians like Lyle Mays are born and come along and lay down incredible stuff like this....I have been listening to Contemporary music for 75 years and stuff like this continues to blow my mind and make me get down on my knees and thank the GUY upstairs for allowing to still here examples of this beautiful idiom,,,,.....thank you Lyle Mays...during your stay on Planet Earth you have laid down a path for others to follow!!
Lyle............Endless thanks for your presence, talent, skill sets, profound emotions, insights, imagination, and generosity in sharing your treasures with the world at large!!! Journey well!!!
The samba was certainly impled the this composition's title. And in the original recording, the samba rhythm seem to appear them fade repeatedly. Here with a group I sense a stronger and sustained samba feeling.
He was just one of the best of the best, any genre~discovered him at my older age of about 57 or so, along with Metheny (yeah in the 70s, 80s I was in music school and establishing myself as a teacher/pianist) but OH so much joy in my life with brilliant Lyle Mays! So sad when he passed~
While it may be a long and difficult journey, we must keep support for musical integrity alive. I will never ever stop enjoying music like this. Whether it's purchasing CDs/etc., attending any gigs that I can, spreading the word (either virtually or out on the street), this will not fade away into irrelevance! BTW, I recently received a bit of news that Lyle is working on some new things. I don't have much in the way of details, but I understand that it's due out sometime next year. Stay tuned!
This is my first time hearing this song from a complete, accurate metric perspective. On the album there are no drums, so its easy to lose where the downbeat is as Lyle's rhythmic figures shift. Beautiful and amazing still. Now with the drums marking the meter throughout, its easier to see where every accent and rhythm metrically sits. Makes me admire Lyle's talent even more. That has to be Mark Walker on the drums with his excellent Brazilian stylings.
Email' s Then I'm at advantage. I speak Portuguese, English, Spanish and Italian and a little German! And your Spanish sucks. 😆 Portuguese has nothing to do with Spanish. I said: what are you laughing at? 🤷🏻♀️
This gentleman Lyle Mays never ceases to amaze me. I love the back beat, Brazilian music has always been my favorite. It has such a smooth way of making one happy.
I can remember the day that I bought the first Lyle Mays Solo Album. Actually it's on my computer table right now - I'm looking at it. Chrorinho is from Street Dreams and has always been one of my absolute favorite songs. When you consider all of the garbage music that has been made in the past 20 years, it breaks your heart doubly to think that Lyle Mays hasn't been recording very much in that same time.
He's an amazing US jazz musician but this beautiful tune sounds like a genuine brasilian modern chorinho and Egbert Gismonti's soul is so present here. What a perfect chorinho that makes me happy. Music has no boarders.
I have always enjoyed this tune. I was unaware that the drummer is Mark Walker. I met Mark at Oregon's concert at Ukiah High School, Ukiah, CA October of 2011. I wish Lyle would produce more cds of his own...they're GREAT!
This is one of the most amazing complex melodies that I've ever heard,it's breath-taking! One of my favorite pieces to listen to, Lyle is one of the greatest keyboardists I've seen, saw him quite a fewtimes with PMG. Really love his playing. Thanks for posting.
SAMBA baby ! These musicians understand Samba . I've always felt this particular rhythmic architecture supports intelligent music so well . breathing singing swinging !
Je viens de découvrir Lyle par hasard. Quelle élégance ! De belles harmonies et un joli phrasé. Merci. I've just discovered Lyle by chance. What an elegance ! Beautiful harmony and nice phrasing. Thanks.
I bought Lyle's 'Street Dreams' CD when it came out, this was my favorite piece on the album, I would listen to it over and over, one of his finest compositions in my opinion, the melody is one of the most complex jazz lines I've ever heard, and to hear this live rendition of it is really 'out of this world' virtuosity. Thank you for posting this incredible recording, really enjoyed it! (And perfectly played, not one mistake, unbelievable!)
Lucky you, I've known Mays and Metheny for only four years now. With all the 'musical' crap that is produced here in Brazil, and by the mainstream media out there, true and talented musicians are completely drowned and mostly unheard of.
This piece has always reminded me of a difficult, but satisfying piano practice exercise! Never get tired of hearing the live or studio version of this Brasilian inflected tune.
this is off of Nice Dreams solo cd he did in the eighties, I got a copy in 85' and it freaked me out totally incredible and influential to this day in my work as a composer and jazz performer
Lyle Mays' work is always legendary.I'm overwhelmed everytime I listen to him.
This recording became a classic the moment it was released.
Bach would be blown away!!
I’m just glad that one day I will look back at my life and say, you know what, I sat in a concert hall with Lyle mays sat at the piano/ keyboards. One of the greatest honours of my life. Rest in peace brother, you are so missed😢.
So beautiful 😍
Lyle Mays was an amazing pianist, keyboards player, composer, and his ability to blend in with a band but also solo equally well is just astounding to me. I am so happy to have discovered him in recent years, but was so sad he passed away relatively young. :-(
Since Lyle's death, I have been listening to any Lyle music I can listen to. Rest in Peace, Lyle. Miss you and your music/artistry.

Same here.

R.I.P dear Lyle, you've been a wonderful Musician, you've inspired me like no one else in jazz

Lyle............Endless thanks for your presence, talent, skill sets, profound emotions, insights, imagination, and generosity in sharing your treasures with the world at large!!! Journey well!!!
yikes...this samba is everything Ive loved about music. So glad I heard this. Beautiful. Thank you x
The samba was certainly impled the this composition's title. And in the original recording, the samba rhythm seem to appear them fade repeatedly. Here with a group I sense a stronger and sustained samba feeling.
Grandissimo artista e genio musicale.
What a gifted player .
Anyway...God our father only could create one & only Lyle Mays Soul for our amazement and enjoyment! Rest in perfect peace, my brother.
All that wonderful piano music coming out of one man. Incredible!
This is best than the studio take, you can feel how much Lyle has improved his touch for Brazilian music and the rhythmic comping. Unbelievable.
In spite this is an amazing version, studio is also sublime....I would not dare for a favourite.....
Lyle you made me happy today with this genius composition. Rest in peace.
Love this and glad to have this in my life...RIP Lyle Mays
this man was a genius...

R.I.P Lyle Mays.. to one of my biggest heros.

rembeadgc The right word is Chorinho and it’s a Brazilian style from the beginning of the 20 century. Actually I’m Brasilian, please, with an S. 🇧🇷

The drummer in this live recording is Mark Walker (American)
Exceptional Drummer. Makes the recording, though, of course, Mays is a genius.

The McCoy Tyner effect with touches of Oscar Peterson accents. Brilliant beyond measure!
