this person is one of the people who made my childhood happy, tutorials on making blowguns, arrows and others, wow my childhood was beautiful, by the way you are thin now😁
So years ago I used to watch your videos to make bows. I was obsessed with bows. I totally forgot you’re the pvc guy. I’m now making a hoplite outfit for renfest and wanted to make a kopis. So I remembered pvc is super quick and easy, and since I work construction I have all The tool and heat gun. When I saw you doing the video I got super excited and I feel like I ran into an old friend I haven’t seen in a long time. Thanks for the great video. Much appreciated. And as always it’s good seeing you again.
Actually you can buy hard plastic sword/bokken with scabard for lower price , than doing it all from a scratch. It is very cheap if you already have heatgun, clambs, wood, driller. It makes sense if you also want to make a bows or use heatgun for wrapping for example, or if you want to make bunch of swords. But if you just want a practice sword and lack tools, just buy one.
Timing on this is nuts. I just got commissioned to make prop Kukri knives and I was like, "I bet Nick would be good at making blades out of PVC". Boom. You're the best.
Re-posting this from Community Board because I don't think it has as much visibility there and I think this message is important ... Given all that Nick has done and now plans to do, it's about time we all start supporting him via Patreon. I did and noticed he doesn't have very many supporters. Nick has created a vast content related to archery and other topics in a how-to sense and DESERVES better treatment. I'm certain he does all this out of a labor of love, but come on - look at all the millonaire "influencers" producing garbage content out there and compare it to what Nick has produced. Please step up and donate - it doesn't have to be a large amount. I'm sure he will appreciate people donating anything to help him through these times and produce even better content. I say this as a lazy youtube lurker who has benefited from his videos for years and finally did the right thing. Thank you Nick for all you have done and continue to do!
About a year before this video was made, during COVID lockdowns, I helped my daughter turn a pair of flat aluminium strips into a pair of pirate cutlasses so we could fight inside our home. And I discover this video four years later. Hilarious. Well, added to my "let's make pirate cutlasses props!" playlist.
Great video! I also make PVC swords for my son, nephews and niece. I love to see what other craftsmen are doing for inspiration. Keep up the good work.
Great Fun...Glad to see you enjoying life and diversifying. I guess the kids will have a ball with the swords. Remember what I always say...the key to life is FUN ! FUN ! FUN!
What a great, fun project! I make props and things for interactive Experience Design classes. We have a class coming up next semester about Pirates in Fact and Fiction, and some pvc cutlasses would be a great addition. Am going to try making one tomorrow. You are a great craftsman and a neverending source of inspiration. You are a living treasure. Keep doing what you do... Am going to to try to find some of your books. thank you so much! fangirl Karen
Just what I need, been struggling to find ways of making a saber trainer out of pvc pipes (since we don't have HEMA gears at all where I'm from) and happened to stumbled by this video. Amazing works dude. Maybe you can show us the way to make a rapier next ?.
Man I wish I could've suggested this before maythefourth but I literally just watched you're Ghost Bow video and thought about getting you to make a Kylo Ren light saber out of that clear pvc! It's totally do-able, just not sure how the LEDs would work? Anyways, it would be a fun project for the kids.. ...and me. 😆 lol
Wow. I was just thinking about making my own temporary synthetic longswords out of pvc to teach myself some HEMA basics. Then you upload this. Fantastic. May I ask where you get furniture grade pvc, and what’s the difference between furniture, electrical conduit, and plumbing?
Thanks for watching! I get my furniture grade from Home Depot.com and Amazon. They both carry Formufit brand furniture grade. Furniture grade is made for outside furniture so it is made with colors, uv protection, and impact resistance already in the plastic itself. Formufit furniture grade pipe uses almost 100% PVC polymer. Plumbing pipe and electrical conduit are bulked out with other resins, waxes and calcium carbonate to help with cleaner extrusions. They tend to get brittle when exposed to UV light, but some are tougher than others. Search for PVC hammer test for a test you can do on PVC or any plastic you plan to strike or bend repeatedly.
I suppose this technique would work with any sword, be it katana or claymore. I never thought you could do half the stuff you've been able to with PVC that you've done so I don't know what I could suggest. I mean, it doesn't seem possible, but could you somehow make a shield or a frame of one? Or an axe?
Hey nick I really like you and your vibes. Do you want to meet my sister? She is great! I ask because I feel little guilty cause she have troubles to find someone and it's kinda my fault... you see, when we were young, our parents took as to a camping in the forest. It was so fun and great. But when we were young I kinda hated my sister, so I took a a bacon and put it under her pillow. In the night it was happen... a black bear came to our tent, and it raged like a beast on my sister! It cut her face with its claws and her screams was so hard! All the forest knew that moment, that something terrible happened. Seens than I try to find my sister a good guy who's will love her like she is. Also, I love you and really want you to be my family member! I can't wait to hug you and to sniff your armpits!! Emmmm they look delicious!! I bet your sweat taste like hunny😍
Can you imagine having this guy as a dad or uncle? Bows, swords, flint napping, knifemaking, jewelry making. Best childhood ever.
What I aspire to be!

This is timely since I was ready to get some new practice swords to replace our old wooden ones. Nice, inexpensive alternative!
Thanks for watching!
If you seal the point with glue you can fill the sword with water, then cap the pommel. This will give you a bit more weight to the sword.
