  • Louie encounters some trouble with a high school bully.
(For those of you upset that I cut the rest of the scene, I only uploaded THIS part to illustrate the great acting of the thug and how intense this part of the scene was. I wasn't really considering what happens after the thug leaves, but more of what he said while he was in the cafe.)

No, no, no. Most commentators have got it wrong. Louie did the right thing BUT he used up all his options before getting to this pivotal scene. For starters, if a bunch of football player yahoos enter a cafe and make life miserable for you, you get up and leave. You can complain to management on the way out, or depending on the thugs behavior, even to the police. End result: you and your date are alive and you haven't lost face. But Louie got assertive with them with nothing to back it up. Pretend it wasn't Louie but it was Bruce Lee or Gronkowski or someone who can back up the request of the thugs to shut up. You still lose. So Gronk and the thug, who in this case doesn't himself back down, wrestle or exchange blows and meanwhile the thugs buddies rush in from behind and one of them stick's a knife into Gronks ribs. He loses and in many real life scenarios, the good guy does lose. And for what? Most martial arts recommend you first look at your escape options and use those first.

this was very hard to watch because the bully seemed so genuine (too good of acting), his facial expressions and how he humiliated Louie in front of his date and just made him look like the biggest pussy and also made her feel so uncomfortable. it made me wonder if he treats women like that, I encountered someone like him it is very scary because they seem so calm, cool an collected and threatening all at the same time...don't think Louie got laid that night and it was going so well until they walked in. this whole scenario was so realistic

My grandson, 14 years old at the time and not frail by any means, wound up being taunted by a bully sitting directly behind him every morning and afternoon on the school bus. One afternoon he snapped, spun around and hit the bully in the side of the head with a math book with such force it did permanent hearing damage. Just like Eastwood said in one of his movies, "every now and then you run across someone you really shouldn't have fucked with". This was one of those times.

Apotheosis Well, he made the wrong decision, which sure makes for great commentary on gender roles and ties back in to the carnal nature of dating by setting himself up for certain failure, but the bully played a mind game with Louis and Louis failed, nobody in his right mind would have beat up a white, professional looking middle-aged man in a diner with several witnesses, that's just fucking stupid. Maybe Louis realizes this, but he sells the bully short, assuming he's capable of such stupidity by not giving him the benefit of the doubt if only to save his own ass, which unnecessarily reveals weakness to the woman. What he should've done is turned it around on the kid by either debunking his claim of not knowing or caring about what he might do to Louis even after he potentially apologizes, and juxtaposing that next to whether not he should say sorry, concluding he doesn't have to say sorry and won't since it apparently doesn't factor in to what the bully does, either way the decision is up to him to make the first move, Louis is simply an older man enjoying his meal and doesn't have to take such easy bait. Either that or he could've just retorted that he's a famous comedian and might sue the bully and his family into poverty, but he doesn't know yet, depends on how he's feeling after he's finished his meal peacefully. Or he could've merely ignored him and waited for his attention span to drop, the point is there are a plethora of options at his disposal here to getting out of this dilemma gracefully and he takes absolutely none of them. While Louis is technically right in doing so, as he took the pity ploy route which is effectively guaranteed safety, he had a myriad of more redeemable options that wouldn't have cost him the date, so the move is just blatantly cowardly. That's not attractive to anyone, let alone a woman.

    • @danimaster6647
      @danimaster6647 6 лет назад +11

Yes you are quite right about the myriad of options Louie has. However keep in mind that this is an unexpected situation that arises and probably catches him off guard.
Physically he doesn't stand a chance against the guy let alone 5 of them. They are football players who are visible athletic and in their prime while Louie is a middle aged overweight man who doesn't do any kind of physical activities.
The way the guy gets in Louie's face doesn't give him any time to think and is intended to intimidate him and throw him off. I probably would have reacted aggressively just to save face. However you could end up very bad doing this (keep in mind these kind of people usually don't think rationally).

    5. Test to see if the bully is fully committed because this can still just be a bluff in an attempt to appear tough or cool in front of his friends. "I'm not fighting 5 vs 1. I only fight 1 on 1."

I went on a date with a girl to an affluent bar area, she was quite 'posh' - (we were both early 30's so 10 years+ ago). There was 3 'kids' probably 19/20 who sat on the table next to us, very noisy and rude and drunk. She had big norks, and a low cut top. They were staring and saying to each other ''wow look at those fun bags, those bristols (cities - t1tt1es)''. She was well educated, a solicitor. I said to one of the lads (way over 6 foot), ''come on lads chill out''. He came over with his mate and it was much shorter than this scene - but same applied ''what you wanna go out front, we'll smash your face in''. I said politely, come on lads, i'll buy your round if you sit on that other table, they said ''fine'' whilst laughing and also wanted a sambuca chaser, probably cost me $30+ to keep the peace. She went right off me within 15 mins and left, sent me a text saying it was ''fun'' but she didn't fancy me. We had already had a kiss and flirted, I have no doubt that episode changed the dynamics. A few years earlier, I had a situation where I cracked a guy and his head bounced off the metal shutters like a basketball trying to defend the honour of the girl. she loved it, was all over it but I felt terrible after it and also did some damage to my knuckle. It didn't last long with her she was a wolf in sheeps clothing, a scally. The morale to the story, women are c£*ts almost all of the time when it comes to masculinity and protection, you can't possibly do the right thing.

True. When we moved to a new town my youngest brother went from popular to an unknown, and in his class a bully decided the "new kid" would be his target. Among other things he would viciously kick my brother in the shins under the desk/table. One day my brother snapped. He jumped up, grabbed a chair and beat the bully over the head with it.
When he returned to school after his suspension was over, it still wasn't out of his system, and during lunch he launched himself at the bully I think with intent to beat him to death. From that day on, no one wanted a piece of him.

His date’s brutally honest reaction (cut early) was central to completing this scene. Louie wonders if she looked down at him because he didn’t stand up for himself and fight, and that he was the father of two kids and if she wanted her guy to beat up punks like that, he wasn’t that guy. She first responds with a lot of “no, totally, you did the right thing, violence is never justified, I’d never want my guy to get into a fight” type of comments before unprovokedly admitting aloud that “but it was a turnoff… to see a guy a debase himself like that… I’m surprised myself I feel that way…”. - They could've left in the first place: Isn't this weird, should you have to leave a place because a group is being unruly? Are you going to hop from place to place every time someone makes some noise? Also, how could Louis have known what would happen when he engaged them? Although it is the safest option, both in regards to saving face and being out of harm's way.
-Louis could surprise attacked the bully: And then? Either he beats the bully bad enough that his friends are scared and just get out of there taking the bully with them, which means you have opened up yourself for a lawsuit. Or they gang up on you, even if you take the bully out, there is no way you can get out without getting beaten to a pulp 1v4. Or worse... you can't even beat the bully and you're humiliated and beaten.
-Louis could have acted exactly like in the video: Feelings of emasculation and humiliation. His date leaving (although she really wasn't a catch to begin with if this is the case). Maybe still get beaten.
-Take out a gun/knife etc: Risky. First of all, if you take out a weapon, you have to be willing to use it. Best chance he backs down and you look like a psychopath to your date (if she is sane). Or you shoot stab the bully... and go to jail? Or worst situation you get cold feet and don't use your weapon, get beaten and you lose your legal high ground. All of these are shit options.
-Stay at home and watch RUclips. Best option?
Love watching this show here and there, but seriously it puts a lot of situations in front of you and it just doesn't give any advice does it...

For me, there are a few things that bother me. First, the odds aren't good. Second, he's standing over me while I'm seated. Third, if the guy is threatening to leave me in a condition that he left the other guy in and the macho thing to do is protect the woman, then the state of insanity I would have to put myself into to have even a chance of just making the guy regret having bothered would make it difficult to prevent her from becoming collateral damage.
I think the only thing to do here is hold your ground. Definitely not beg for mercy. And ask the girl to step back/outside. Hold your ground and clear the field so no bystanders get hurt. My opinion.

"So, you like to fight? That's cool. I don't like to fight, but then I've been around the block a little longer than you, so I usually think before doing things. Here's the deal, bud. See those folks over there? They're called 'witnesses'. See that camera up on the ceiling behind you and to the left? That's recording "exhibit A". That's something I can't control, and neither can you. What you CAN control, is this. What's going to happen to you during the next 15 years."
"See, bud, I don't like my chances if you decide you want to have a scrap. I might get a nice shot in but to be honest? My head will probably be in a few places at once. Enjoy it, I guess. But here's what will happen afterwards."
"Those 'witnesses' and Exhibit A will be shown at your trial. And judging by those fists of yours, things probably won't go your way. Let's say you get 5 years for assault. The first thing that's gonna happen when you go in is, you're gonna meet some charming, tattooed, white fellas who'll lay it out for you - join the Aryan Brotherhood or risk being everyone else's bitch."
"Now you'll figure this is a pretty good deal. You get to lift weights, get tattoos and hang out with the AB until your five years is up. Pretty cool, huh? But that isn't how things work, kid. See, you have to earn your safety. They'll call in a favor - maybe you and some guys will have to bust someone's head - and just like that, you've gone from five to fifteen years. Worth it, huh?"
"And when you get out, you'll be worth nothing. And your friends there? They'll have careers, wives, children - and they won't want to even know you. All because you let that machismo get the best of you and you hit some guy at a table."
"Now get the FUCK out of my face."

Like that one guy said, the best thing would be to get up and leave. These guys are obviously potential trouble (teenage, loud, and insecure), so i would avoid interacting with them at all. When I was that age, i would look for a reason to punch someone in the face. So if you don't want to get in a fight, you go somewhere else. That said, he berated those kids to please the woman- who's the crux of this ordeal. And it's interesting to note that he couldn't have done anything to please her. Leave, get beat up, turn the other cheek- you can't win.

Honestly I dated someone who would have had me try to fight them and get my ass beat. Some women are like that, they can't understand why their boyfriend would be hesitant to fight somebody and possibly get hospitalized. A good women in this situation would tell the kid to fuck off, because she wouldn't expect her date to stoop down to that level. This kid isn't gonna attack her. Loui maybe. She should stand up for him when she can and he'll be there to stand up for her when he can. But every situation is different. The guy can't just beat up anyone who annoys his girl, especially if he's not a professional fighter. That's insane to expect that.

this scene, and other fearsome bullying moments (opening scene of Nocturnal Animals with Jake Gyllenhaal) are my worst nightmares. I can get my ass beat up when I'm alone, the fright of ending disabled, I "can" cope with that. But failing to protect my loved ones would break me. I wouldn't stand a chance even in an adrenaline rush. I don't think I could keep my composure like Louie did. what a nightmare. makes you consider self-defense and stuff. obviously, the woman's reaction is so cringy I don't mind as much.

Be dangerous but disciplined. Be the man who can and will fight to protect and serve if need be. Be dangerous. Otherwise, you're pathetic. Make no mistake, dangerous doesn't mean you need to fight. Being dangerous shows that you're a threat if you're messed with. Being disciplined means you're not a threat unless you need to be. You're not a danger to the ones around you, only to the ones looking to inflict harm.

Are there any other shows or movies with this subplot: a date getting put off seeing her guy emasculated by a bully and honestly admitting to it? Her reaction is so antithetical to the usual message of defusing violence, yet honest, at least for some women, and perhaps for most.

I love how the writer(s) of this scene created a situation where Louie seemingly has no way of prevailing. How does he (a middle-aged man with tons more life experience!) best the high school bully AND not look like a wimp in front of her? The only way I can think of is by saying something that does both of those things, but I have no idea what that would be! 😂 He’s got balls for volunteering himself to illustrate the cringiest date scene ever. After they chanted my name and left I think I would’ve just pre-empted her reaction by saying, “Neither one of us is gonna be able to respect me after that. You’re great, but we’ll never forget this. If you could just never mention this to anyone, I’d sure appreciate it. Bye, now.”
    AND….
Pre-rampant gun violence, this scene hits harder. Now, middle-aged shlubs can dodge these situations by saying, “I’d tell ‘em to knock it off, but I don’t wanna get shot. Let’s just go somewhere else.”

This scene repeats in my mind every once in a while. I'm always at a loss for how to handle it. I find myself thinking, what would GSP do? I have trained but I'm not violent and anything can happen in a fight, at that range, or with his friends nearby. There's really no right answer here. I would never want to fight some reckless kid, nor would I feel comfortable if he was all up in my face. I would probably be triggered and make the mistake of reacting, but I think Louie's character actually handled it the best way. How would you react?
