The New York IT-203 tax form is required for nonresidents of New York that have NY source income, and for persons who were residents of New York state for only part of the year.
For a part-year tax resident, the individual must pay New York state income taxes on all income received while the person was a resident of the state. In this example, we look at a taxpayer who started the year as a New York resident and moved to Florida during the tax year.

Thank you very much for this! I had this exact scenario where I moved to FL mid-year and got confused because my NY W-2 showed my full year income. I really appreciate the step by step detail on this.

If I claim zero allowances on my NY Withholding IT-2104 form that I have to fill out for this internship that starts in June 2024 and ends in August 2024 where I would only end up making 2.7K for the year at the end of August 2024, and my parents still claim me as a “credit for other dependent” on their 2024 joint tax return next year, could I still file my own 2024 tax return next year too or no despite the fact that I will most likely be claimed?

Hi Jason, do you have any sample how to fill out New York City tax form IT-306.1? I use Turbotax to file both of the IT-203 and IT-306.1 form but it has a error message.. The error message indicated the number reported on line 1, col B, IT-203 (NYS) wages is not equal to line 1, 2nd col. NYC wages. From my understanding, NYS wages is populated from the W-2 form box16, which is the net of pre-tax deductions, and NYC reporting supposed to be the gross wages (add back the pre-tax deductions). Furthermore, my company W-2 form show a Local wages box 18, and it populated to the IT-360.1, col 2. It seems the turbotax program is comparing the NYS and NYC wages which it cannot be tie back due the tax base is difference, any suggestion?

So I was living out of a hotel while I was working in NY. Do I put the hotel's address as my permanent address?
