The marines asked to keep Springfields because they didnt trust the garands reliability until later on after seeing its effectiveness

I think that that that is par for the course regarding Marines. They get weapons and equipment that are either substandard or meant for completely different missions. And they are meant to compensate for that by being Marines and embracing the inevitability of death.
