Unless the card is on its last legs, it's just a bad value to trade it in. But like others have said you're not fully expected to trade it in. You can get more money out of ebaying it, but you pay for that with time and effort and the possible hassle of the card either breaking in transit or you get scammed by the buyer. If you walk into a brick and mortar and want someone to just take it off your hands sight-unseen, don't expect to also get the kelly blue book value. They have to take the risk that the card you've given them is a buggy piece of crap. Most people selling used current-gen cards are doing so because there's something wrong with them.

Anybody ever watch Pawn Stars? GPU's take a fairly large depreciation hit as soon as the seal on the box is broken. In the show, Rick typically likes to offer around half of what he thinks he can resell an item for. That's how he makes money. Why do people sell stuff to him so cheap? Speed and convenience.

When I upgrade GPU I find it pretty much always worth it to repurpose it vs selling it except in rare cases (3080 during mining craze etc). Media server, game console emulator, whatever, generally you'll find it cheaper and more multi-purpose than buying a dedicated product if upgrading your whole PC, or just replacing the old GPU into a cheap PC.

I looked at "completed" listings for 4090's on eBay, so... like actual sales of used 4090's. The things RARELY sell because when you are literally the burgoise what's a couple hundred more dollars for your best in the world gaming GPU, and nobody who's sane is even bothering to deal hunt for a 4090 because even the cheapest completed listings were still $1,600+
TL;DR your second hand RTX 4090 is not worth shit because nobody is going to buy it used when they're so rich they can just buy it new _with_ a warranty

There is value in a used 4090 for sure. It is by no means obsolete tech. Still the biggest dog out there. The thing here is that Microcenter needs to make a profit too and there are always risks involved in used hardware. So them paying 700 for it and selling them at 1000-1200 is not that bad. Especially right now with the way 4090's appear to be stocking up and not selling through immediately, I would call it fair... This is the trope in the Pawnshop show. You get an expert who says this is worth xyz and the sellers get all excited and ask for the value of course, but since the Pawnshop needs to make some money too, they cannot offer the items real value. As that is likely the price they may be able to sell it off to another customer... It is what it is.

I guess I've got to be the devils advocate here. Unfortunately, running a business costs money. When Microcenter takes a used card, they are planning to put it back on the shelf. Before they do that, there are a few things that need to be considered. They will most likely disassemble and visually inspect the card and repaste. They will also have to stress test it. These take time and money, decreasing their potential profit. When they take a used card, they take a lot of risk with it. They have no idea how the card was used, if its been tampered with, etc. That means they are also taking the risk of needing to pay for a possible repair on the card. All of this, plus they are trying to resell a used card when PC hardware is always advancing, and the market moves with the new tech. This makes an old card not nearly as valuable. I can understand peoples initial disgust, but they aren't looking to lose money as a business either. Its like trading in used cars at dealerships.... you get far less than a private sale, but at the same time, you trade it in and your hands are clean, you dont need to deal with all the BS that comes with selling private. A dealership takes on very similar risks. So I get it.

They are a business after all and also newegg did it as well (im not defending them or saying its justified in any way) I'm just saying that they are not the only who is doing their dirty practices this whole stores/corporations have sold their souls for money and profits that's how they are going on with it.

@@rodiculous9464 in my case they revoke my right to return items because I returned too many items. Since I build and sell PC I purchased a lot of pieces, and for sure I returned several defective parts, which it is not my problem am I right? If some of the parts they sell are nor working properly. After that they did even wanted to honor extended warranties that I got several years ago, despite I paid extra for them... and trust me that I am not the 1st of the last one in a similar situation

This 700$ is fair offer. There is tons of work and risks involved buying from used market. Other thing to consider is that who is selling 4090s - rich people who actually dont care about that anyway - they are more like ".... I did trade in my old crap and did get 700$ off from my new 5000$ rig ...."

Just shows the real value of todays overpriced gpu market. Do you really expect a business to pay anything more for a used card when a new product is ready to come out very soon ? They need to have some kind of turnaround on the deal. And you really cannot compare a computer part or any other electronics with eg. a vintage analog synth that in some cases sellls for 10 and 20 times the original price 40 years ago. Whenever there is a new gen in computer parts or electronics the model you just baught last year is practical worthless cause you can now get a new one with 4 times the functionality at half the price. People have just been blinded by most companies using the last 4 years of covid and chip shortage to artificially push prices to a redicolous value where people actually think the gpu's are worth what they payed. And generally people always think their used garbage electronics is worth way more when trying to sell it online. Most prices on used gear is also artificially and cleverly manipulated to make it seem like a 5 year old gpu is 2-400 bucks worth when the actual value realistically is more like half the value people buy it at.
