I'm glad i put that part into the video to help explain. Yes if you wanted to get recovery back to big sur you would need a 2nd mac. BUT this is not bad if you dont, as you can leve monterey on recovery until the Final or public version launches in the fall. When that happens and you upgrade the recovery version of monterey beta will be updated to the final version. 👍
I am sorry if I missed something, but if you have a 2015 Intel Mac and want to downgrade to Big Sur using the USB stick method, you have to run Disk Utility and erase the hard drive first (as you show at the 5:00 mark)?? Thank you.
Correct, to do a proper downgrade from monterey to big sur you need to backup all your files ad then boot from a Big Sur USB installer and then perform an erase and install 👍

Very good video ! Though I have some critic: to call this a "downgrade" I consider misleading You do a clean install and all your data is gone. You have to recover all your data from a backup. A real downgrade would replace the OS with the older version and leave all the data intact. I thought that that was the reason why apple has the two partions !
Thank you for the share! Do you know how to copy entire M1 Time Machine backups to another disk? It seems didn't work for the old intel model ways. Thanks!

Downgrade success!! Thank you so much! Before I downgrade, I had backup by time machine(system is Monterey12.2 ), how to get my files and the desktop set up back? Or I have to set step by step?
Hello Jimmy, apple changed the Time Machine restore process in Big Sur now it forces you to use migration assistant at the setup assistant screen. You can also fire up the migration assistant application and use your TM from there. It should log you out and wait for the drive to connect.
Heads up for people trying to downgrade right now on Apple M1: Going from Monterey 12.2 to Big Sur 11.2.3 does not work. It won't recognize the installer drive on boot. Create an installer drive from the latest Big Sur 11.6 instead and it will work. BUT: time machine could only restore the backups from Big Sur. The backups that I did in Monterey COULD NOT BE RESTORED IN BIG SUR! So make sure to BACKUP your data BEFORE UPDATING to Monterey, as long as you're able to!
I installed Monterey on my M1 MBP 2 days ago, and so far, gaming performance for me is worse than it was on Big Sur, and Apple messed up VSync, setting my FPS to Vsync maxes out at 120 fps... that's for the new MacBooks.. I just want Big Sur back :(

Hey Mr. Macintosh, I followed your suggested path for downgrading on my M1 MacBook Air, but I ran into a problem with my recovery: Long story short, the recovery mode no longer sees my account on the drive as an administrator, and I cannot add new user accounts to the machine. For most uses it works fine and I can certainly continue to use the machine normally, but if I want to modify my settings to add a kernel extension (like Rogue Amoeba’s Loopback) it creates problems and tells me there’s no admin user on the device. I recovered the drive from Time Machine. What are my options here?

I'm glad i put that part into the video to help explain. Yes if you wanted to get recovery back to big sur you would need a 2nd mac. BUT this is not bad if you dont, as you can leve monterey on recovery until the Final or public version launches in the fall. When that happens and you upgrade the recovery version of monterey beta will be updated to the final version. 👍
Thank you 😊
I am sorry if I missed something, but if you have a 2015 Intel Mac and want to downgrade to Big Sur using the USB stick method, you have to run Disk Utility and erase the hard drive first (as you show at the 5:00 mark)?? Thank you.
Correct, to do a proper downgrade from monterey to big sur you need to backup all your files ad then boot from a Big Sur USB installer and then perform an erase and install 👍
@@Mr.Macintosh So, if you installed Monterey and are having one of the issues that's been widely reported about machines being disabled on start-up by the OS, the only option is to try an erase and re-install of a previous system (Big Sur)?
milions thanks to you, sir you have saved me so many times with your videos
This caused me to loose the ability to use the "Startup Secutiry Utility", to allow external drivers to be installed. Trying to use it gives me an error: "Security Settings cannot be changed"
any Ideias??
thanks a lot! I've been trying to upgrade to catalina for quite some time and thanks to your well-detailed video I finally managed to do it
Do I need any backup next to a time machine backup? Or can I safely delete Macintosh and install Big Sur on it without issues? And how do I go on with my files after installing? Is it automatically my same old mac with all my files from the time machine backup or do I need to install these again?
@Mr.Macintosh i have a question, How can i downgrade a Macbook Pro 2019 Catalina to High Sierra ?
Best regards.
After choosing the Big Sur Installer on my usb flash drive it does take me back to macOS utilities after quite a while BUT the only option I ALWAYS get is my starter OS Catalina. Why???
Please help, when I erase the drive on my mac, it instantly restarts instead of letting me exit disk utility normally. Then when it boots back up i can only install montoerey. I have my usb boot drive and I've followed all the steps but I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...
Very helpful videos! Thanks 🙏🏼 All your videos on point and mention all details. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much Pavlidiz!!
I’m in OD Monterey. I want to Downgrade to Big Sur. It’s saying I can’t Downgrade?

Brilliantly video, but what about m1 pro and m1 pro max?
Can you downgrade without losing data?
hi bro i also have a macbook air 2017 my scrolling is very choppy in all apple apps and while split screen whenever i try to adjust the screen that thing is also laggy which is very annoying can u plz help me bro🙏🙂
I'm having a lot of trouble downgrading it. Currently I have MBA M1. Whenever I erase the Macintosh HD in Disk Utility, it asks 'Erase Mac and Restart'.
And when I do that, the Mac restarts and is unable to read the Big Sur from the USB drive and just shows the option 'Recover macos Monterey'.
Can someone help me understand how to overcome this issue?
i have the same issue.

Here is the Fix people. re erase the drive. switch off the Mac and power it back on you should be able to load directly to installer page with Big sur as the OS or whatever OS you have on the bootable usb drive. worked for me.
@@tharunreddy3730 i tried this and it didn’t work
If after following the instructions to down grade to big sur , I use a time machine backup that was done in Monterey , does the is become Monterey again?
Will this work with open core on my 2011 MacBook Pro?
Yes, but you will need to use OCLP to build a big sur installer to install big sur 👍
Hi I’ve installed big sur on not supported MacBook Pro 2009 but is not possible to download Netflix on the App Store..how can I dove that?
Puedo regresar una MacBook Air m1 a Catalina? 🤔
Hey Guys. Is it possible to downgrade a M1 Macbook Air from Big Sur to Catalina? You just did it from Monterey to Big Sur. But i got Hardware compatibility issues with the M1.
Nicely explained, concise, easy to understand (passes the "mom test"). Something that can be shared with just about any Mac user.
Thank you William!!! What you just mentioned is the goal when I create a video like this. Beginner users will understand but the video will still work for more advanced users. I just checked my stats for this video. 99% Male 1% Female. Maybe a Mom will watch this video one day 🤣
Help , I did follow your process to downgrade from Ventura to Big Sur as Ventura does not accept my apogee card while Big Sur does. So I did the bootable USB key and did format my Hard drive but once I am at the step of installing the computer tells me it can’t install on my hard drive and that’s it. Back to egg.
What should I do. I have a M1 with Ventura .
Thank you

is it possible to downgrade the macbook with m1 chip to catalina??
It is not working for me… The bootable drive does not pop up. Is there a way I can downgrade by using a time machine backup with Big Sur on it?
Hello Samuel, Apple changed the way time machine works in Big Sur and newer. You can only use the TM backup at the setup assistant window after reinstalling macOS. When you hold down option you are not seeing the Big Sur installer USB ?
@@Mr.Macintosh first of I didn’t, but I know how to fix it now. After deleting Macintosh I had to power off and hold the power button again. Then in recovery mode the drive with big sur did pop up.
why do i keep updating??? every time i do it, it doesn't help me at all and just takes away support from my games i paid money for
Does this work for a 2021 MacBook Pro I bought 3 months ago?
Only your videos can help me out of trouble
What should I do its telling me installer is damage
Helpful video. How would you do that if you are not able to unmount the SSD? Couldn't open the device. :(-69877) for example?
Hi! How do I downgrade from big sur to catalina or mojave for old macbook pro 2011? I upgraded from high sierra to big sur by watching one of your videos. Thanks!

i used this method to downgrade to big sur, but i am ihaving issues soome apps crashing for no reason acess violation error, plus when i got to about this mac system report and audio section i am getting error "There was an error while gathering this information." i want to reinstall macosx from the recovery but it now only says reinstall monetery, what can i do... alot of my programs are not working properly
Question: Ever since downgrading from Monterey to Big Sur some of my 3rd party app's no longer work and give me this error "runtime library is newer than runtime". Is there a way to fix this? Does this have to do with downgrading from Monterey to Big Sur or is it caused by something else?
I have an M1 and it dosnt show any of my usb installers ??
you can install only the current firmware
If Catalina work in M1 …..also Mojave work at same ?
I need your help Mr. Macintosh. Is possible to install BigSur on M1 2021? I was trying to do it but I coudn't it!
When I erased the HD I got a screen showing illustration of the mac mini with arrow under the power switch and then a slide illustration of the mouse with arrow over the power switch. What does this mean? I couldn't figure out what to do so I shut down and rebooted in recovery mode again. Now the mouse does not work and I cannot select Install macos Big Sur. very frustrating.
2017 mbp. Can I use an external HD instead of a flash drive?
Very good video ! Though I have some critic: to call this a "downgrade" I consider misleading You do a clean install and all your data is gone. You have to recover all your data from a backup. A real downgrade would replace the OS with the older version and leave all the data intact.
I thought that that was the reason why apple has the two partions !
Do you happen to know if my apps and data will transfer over when I downgrade or will it erase everything?
Thank you for the share! Do you know how to copy entire M1 Time Machine backups to another disk?
It seems didn't work for the old intel model ways. Thanks!
i just purchased a mac studio with monterey installed in it, but i'm a music producer and i lost all of my plugins , so is it possible i can downgrade to catalina on a mac studio?
This not working for me. Everything was fin until install. My bootable drive is not beeing seen. The only thing there is reinstall of Monterey. 2021 mac book pro M1
Hello Joe, can you go back to the disk utility and see what it shows? You might need to format the drive again.
@@Mr.Macintosh The drive is not there, It was shown before erasing the HD but now it.s not listed.
Reinstalled monterey because it was the only choice and now the install media drive shows again.
Just talked to Apple Support and said that this mac originally had Monterey on it. My school said it was big sur. So not possible to down grade with it shipping with Monterey supposedly. I am not a Mac guy, but the school uses them, so I am completely ignorant with Mac.
Still very useful and clear video, thanks! Also the other video on how to create a bootable usb.
I have a work laptop and I want to do this without the usb inserted. Will the internet recovery option work ( holding shift + command + option + R on startup ) ? I have a T2 mac.
Why is my Mac requiring me to get a wired connection to my wifi router before installing Big Sur off my USB? Even wired it won’t register and can’t install wtf help please
Thank you for your kindly reply.
I will try. 🙏
Hi Bro! It's possble to do this in MacBook Pro 2021 M1 Pro 14"?
Heads up for people trying to downgrade right now on Apple M1:
Going from Monterey 12.2 to Big Sur 11.2.3 does not work.
This answer helped me after 3 nights trying to get 11.2.3 to run. Now ik can go on with my life ;-) Thank you!!!!

I installed Monterey on my M1 MBP 2 days ago, and so far, gaming performance for me is worse than it was on Big Sur, and Apple messed up VSync, setting my FPS to Vsync maxes out at 120 fps... that's for the new MacBooks.. I just want Big Sur back :(
Why are you trying to game on a mac???

Mr. Macintosh, I have another Mac (iMac 27', late 2013) that I want to upgrade from Sierra to Catalina but I don't seem to find the "full version" of Catalina. If you have any other findings on how to downgrade from factory Monterey to Big Sur, I'm also all ears. Thanks again for your support!
Hi Mr. Macintosh, I just got a MacBook Pro M1pro chip, Monterey OS 2021, is it possible to downgrade to a different OS? I bought this computer for music production, specifically to use with pro tools and waves SuperRack, this is my first MBP and unfortunately I didn’t research enough about the technical aspects… neither pro tools or SuperRack are still compatible with this OS… there’s no accurate updates about when I’ll be able to use this computer with the softwares I mentioned!
I’m in the same boat. Just got my Mac mini M1 yesterday to find that pro tools is not supported. Did you figure a work around or were you able to go down to Big Sur? The Big Sur installer won’t download for me.
@@anbo0o0o I actually had to return the MacBook, I got a 2020 model instead, the 2021 MBP comes originally with Monterey OS, that’s why is not possible to downgrade according to apple, the MacBook I recently bought already had Monterey OS installed too, but since this model was released with Big Sur OS, I was able to downgrade, I’m using Pro tools right now through the Rosetta application without issues! I can use most of the waves plugins in pro tools, waves super rack is still not compatible with any of the M1 chip computers… this guys are taking forever!
I hope this helps!
So, has something changed since you made this video? I have a number of m1 Max MacBooks that I need to run Big Sur on, and this isn't working. The Macintosh HD will not allow an install from the USB boot installer. Also, I cannot find the link to the mac-to-mac downgrade either. Help!
Hello P Lauer, I saw your other post. The new 2021 14" 16" MBPro's are only able to install Monterey 12.0.1 or newer. Big Sur is not compatible because apple did not include the needed drivers.
When I get to the screen at 9:15, Macintosh HD is greyed out and it says OS cant be downgraded. I have a M1 Macbook Air. Do you know how to fix this?
Hello Rahul, what model do you have? If you have a 2020 M1 you can still downgrade to big sur but you will need to backup your data first then erase the drive. If you have a 2021 M1 Pro or max Monterey is the lowest version you can use.
What's the trick to making the installer USB drive show up in recovery mode on a M1 Mac? This works fine on an intel, but not on my M1 I can make the installation USB and get into recovery but no external USB drives are visible. Running Monterey 12.1 on a Mini M1 that used to have Big Sur
Hey, I can see the external install macOS big sure drive in the disk utility but when I click erase for internal macintosh hd volume, it says an internet connection will be required to reactivate this mac and reinstall mac OS
It doesn’t give me the option to select my hard drive when booting from a Catalina instal thumb drive.
Thanks so much. I’m having a problem going from Monterey to Catalina. I’m using the usb stick way. On the install, it gets to 2 minutes left and then says “an error occurred validating the installer data. The download is either damaged or incomplete”. Anyone have any wisdom for me?
HELP. After erasing Macintosh HD, the system restarts automatically and only after activates. Doing so it does not give me the option to continue to Big Sur but, instead, I can reinstall Monterey...
Hey Mr. Macintosh, I’m trying to downgrade my MacBook Pro from monterey to Big Sur. I followed the USB video and I was successful with that step however, when it comes to actually downgrading, something keeps going wrong where it’s not working. All that shows up is the “reinstall macOS Monterey”. The Big Sur option doesn’t appear in that spot. I’m not sure where I’m going wrong or what the issue is, please help.
Hello! Just to be sure, are you using an Intel or M1 Mac?
Mine is doing the same thing. It won’t let me choose anything but reinstall Monterey. Do I need to unmount Monterey or something?
This is happening for me also. Any fix? I’m on an Intel mac
can this work in macos 2011

@@Mr.Macintosh thank you for your reply to this I was driving myself crazy ! Well I have some choices to make thanks again
whats the best way to backup in this case? I cloud is no option for me..
I ended up doing a Configurator restore, which fixed the issue. Thanks for your work-it helped lead me in the right direction.
