This database will contain download links for macOS 12 full Installer pkg files (InstallAssistant.pkg). This file is the same full installer that you would download directly from the App Store for Intel and Apple Silicon M1 Mac Computers. The InstallAssistant.pkg is stored on Apple's servers and contains the full "Install macOS.app". Once downloaded, all you need to do is install the pkg and the full installer of macOS will be in your applications folder. This change was made when Apple revised the full installer for Big Sur. The InstallAssistant.pkg is not available for Catalina or Mojave.

Did you upgrade to macOS Monterey to try or test it out and now want to downgrade? I'VE GOT YOU COVERED!!! I go over a lot of different things but tried to get it all in a quick way. If you have any questions, let me know!
Start up utilities security has a different layout on my M1 iMac.all was going well until I came to this point 😩 (full security/reduced security are only options)
Is it inevitable to erase all the data before I install Big Sur? I currently run Monterey beta
I backed up to time machine only after I updated to the beta. Does that mean even if I downgrade that it’ll go back to Monterrey after restoring the backup? Or will the data not be wiped and I won’t have to restore any backup?
Hi love ur video. Need help. When i pressed big sur via bootable usb media went to recovery mode but my wireless keyboard and wireless mouse are not working. Iam doing it on my imac mid2017. Need ur help
What if you got 2011 mac and you upgrade to monnery and you wish to downgrade in the beginning I had high ser
Brilliantly helpful video, followed it to the letter and no issues. Fairly new to Mac and new to trying betas but wanted to go back to being more stable so this has helped a TON to educate me in aspects of MacOS I was not previously aware of.
Thank you very much Roy, I really appreciate it!!
Mr. Macintosh, you're the best! The most insightful, clear, to-the-point instructions, worked without any issues. Thank you!
Seemless instructions. So easy to follow and understand.Worked a treat. Thanks Mr Mac
Thank you so, so, so so much! I was having audio issues related to the beta software, and couldn't for the life of me downgrade. absolute life saver!!
Thank you! Glad I could help 👍
You are amazing! You actually made this fun and understandable with your clear instructions and enthusiasm
I regret monterey so much. I have a time machine backup from Big Sur but the process to downgrade looks so complicated :'(
Simple and straightforward! Had to downgrade because of a bug on Monterey which messed up my Outlook email search. Thanks bud
This was so helpful. Was trying to follow guidelines, but went into a "this volume can't be downgraded" because they missed the part about wiping the drive first. Thanks!
thanks a lot! I've been trying to upgrade to catalina for quite some time and thanks to your well-detailed video I finally managed to do it
Just what to say thank you for uploading this video. I downgraded my Mac Mini M1 to Big Sur yesterday because the flickering screen and unresponsive back and forward buttons on my Logitech MX3 mouse was driving me crazy. Everything works now as it should.
THANK YOU!! this was by far the best video that explains this process from start to finish. Very well done. Appreciate the help!
Thank you very much Elmer, I really appreciate that!
Very helpful videos! Thanks 🙏🏼 All your videos on point and mention all details. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much Pavlidiz!!
Great and super useful video. Especially for the M1 Macs!
Thank you so much for this video. I used beta 7 of Monterrey, but it's still got a long way to go.
For sure, good thing we have a few more beta updates before launch 👍
Thank you so much for this video. Monterey completely screwed up my Mac Mini M1, to the point that I couldn’t use it for my studio. Going back to Big Sur (as overly complicated of a process as it is) is going to help a ton
this worked perfectly thank you so much! if i can add anything, everyone just please make sure you do a time machine back up or something before you do this, i nearly didn't and i'm glad i did cause after i had to reinstall from a back up so got pretty lucky
Thanks so much for this video. Fantastically helpful!
thankyou i really needed help since i updated to monterey and trying to install parallel desktop 15 this is the only way
I did use the Configurator 2, what a fantastic guide to get this done properly. Oh, I read not to use a thunderbolt 3 cable but use a usb-c and that worked fabulous
Very good point Al, as the thunderbolt cable does work sometimes Apple does not recommend it.
Still very useful and clear video, thanks! Also the other video on how to create a bootable usb.
Nicely explained, concise, easy to understand (passes the "mom test"). Something that can be shared with just about any Mac user.
Thank you William!!! What you just mentioned is the goal when I create a video like this. Beginner users will understand but the video will still work for more advanced users. I just checked my stats for this video. 99% Male 1% Female. Maybe a Mom will watch this video one day 🤣
Thank you so so much, this video was so helpful. I've been trying to downgrade for the last 2 days and just now found this video. I was so lost but this instruction was very helpful. Can only recommend it. Great Guy!
Thank you Vincent, I'm glad it helped you!
Currently "downgrading" to Big Sur due to battery life issues on my M1 MBP. Thank you very much for this guide, amazing.
What was the issue? My macbook air m1 just shuts down at 54% precisely
@@adamraymond4213 Battery life took a nosedive, switched back to Big Sur and it's good as new.
@@LazyPCRehab damn okay thanks I'll try too
Did the apps you installed gone?
@@sisiamaliaarfiandini8497 yes, it is a brand new install.
Thank you for the share! Do you know how to copy entire M1 Time Machine backups to another disk?
It seems didn't work for the old intel model ways. Thanks!
Thanks Mr. Mac for helping me to get Big Sur on my 2012 MB Pro 13 Ret. Like a brand new car. Should I get Monterey when it comes out? Will it work or is it time to consider upgrading to the soon to be released MB PRO 14/16? Circa 10 years on laptop is cool with me so money is not an issue. Thanks as always for the tech support !
milions thanks to you, sir you have saved me so many times with your videos
Thanks! Extremely informative!
Thanks for this! This was extremely resourceful :)
You bet Narayana!! 👍
Question: Ever since downgrading from Monterey to Big Sur some of my 3rd party app's no longer work and give me this error "runtime library is newer than runtime". Is there a way to fix this? Does this have to do with downgrading from Monterey to Big Sur or is it caused by something else?
Only your videos can help me out of trouble
Does this work if rather than erasing Monterey I instead partition my SSD in two, and install Big Sur on the new partition to create a dual booting machine?
I'm using an M1 iMac which came with Big Sur.
Thanks for the useful video.
Sorry if this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything about it in the comments.
Thank YOU Sir , Was Very Useful !!!
My god dude. You just saved me. Thank you 🙌🙌🙌
so i need to put big sur on a hard drive or does a usb stick work? and then keep that plugged in the whole time during this entire process?
Hi! How do I downgrade from big sur to catalina or mojave for old macbook pro 2011? I upgraded from high sierra to big sur by watching one of your videos. Thanks!
This really needs to wipe all data from the system and data partition for a downgrade? That's not a downgrade then, but a complete wipe and re-installation. Or did I miss something?
Do I need any backup next to a time machine backup? Or can I safely delete Macintosh and install Big Sur on it without issues? And how do I go on with my files after installing? Is it automatically my same old mac with all my files from the time machine backup or do I need to install these again?
In real time, how long does the process take?
I'm downgrading form monterey to big sir on a 2020, intel, MacBook pro. I've already got the file ready to go.
Thanks
Helpful video. How would you do that if you are not able to unmount the SSD? Couldn't open the device. :(-69877) for example?
Hi
I have MacBook pro M1 chip 2021 model came with monterey
I tried to downgrade to Big sur, i went though this steps but when i select Macintosh HD
To downgrade, it says that can not be installed on this computer,
So how can i fix this? because Logic pro x is not downloading the sound library on monterey i really need help to downgrade
Hey Hey i have a M1 Bigsur im trying to downgrade to MoJave.. I have done all these steps and it wont even detect my USB with the boot can you help me out?
Very clever and friendly guy, thanks a lot.
Hey, I can see the external install macOS big sure drive in the disk utility but when I click erase for internal macintosh hd volume, it says an internet connection will be required to reactivate this mac and reinstall mac OS
Thanks so much. I’m having a problem going from Monterey to Catalina. I’m using the usb stick way. On the install, it gets to 2 minutes left and then says “an error occurred validating the installer data. The download is either damaged or incomplete”. Anyone have any wisdom for me?
This is a great video! I actually needed this
Glad it was helpful!
I have a work laptop and I want to do this without the usb inserted. Will the internet recovery option work ( holding shift + command + option + R on startup ) ? I have a T2 mac.
If after following the instructions to down grade to big sur , I use a time machine backup that was done in Monterey , does the is become Monterey again?
Thank you this was very helpful
Glad it was helpful @Mr Webb!!!
What's the trick to making the installer USB drive show up in recovery mode on a M1 Mac? This works fine on an intel, but not on my M1 I can make the installation USB and get into recovery but no external USB drives are visible. Running Monterey 12.1 on a Mini M1 that used to have Big Sur
What Virtual Max software do you use? I need to do this for some of my videos.
do I have to back everything up from my mac hard drive before doing this since we completely erase the hard drive?
Mr. Macintosh, I have another Mac (iMac 27', late 2013) that I want to upgrade from Sierra to Catalina but I don't seem to find the "full version" of Catalina. If I go to the App Store I get to download only 19Mb... Do you know where I can get it? Thank you. If you have any other findings on how to downgrade from factory Monterey to Big Sur, I'm also all ears. Thanks again for your support!
My Mac won’t let me download the Big Sur file. States that my MacBook is already up to date.
can i install macos bigsur without erasing the content of the drive ? because i have files inside.
This caused me to loose the ability to use the "Startup Secutiry Utility", to allow external drivers to be installed. Trying to use it gives me an error: "Security Settings cannot be changed"
any Ideias??
Is it possible to downgrad the new macbook pro 14 inch to big sur? I’m using a software that is more fluid with bug sur than monterey as it has a lot of bug when i use/ install it with monterey mac.
What happens if I get error when finally try to install onto Macintosh HD: Volume not downgradeable?
sir
I am having an issue in recovery mode
I am not getting the options for " allowing external boot media protection "
What to do ?
Hi, I tried to make a bootable flash drive but I was not able to enter password, how to enter the password and which password I need to enter?
I erased the disk utility before allowing booting from external media and now I can't access anything. Is there anything I can do?
does this work for m1 pro? i've gotten mine this year with monterey installed on it but i don't like it at all, on my previous mac i've had big sur which i'd really like to go back to...
Please help, when I erase the drive on my mac, it instantly restarts instead of letting me exit disk utility normally. Then when it boots back up i can only install montoerey. I have my usb boot drive and I've followed all the steps but I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...
Can you use Apple configurator 2 to restore an M1 mac, where the second mac is an old pre-T2 Mac with only USB A ports?
YES! as long as the host mac is on at least 10.15.6 and you are using a USB-C to USB-A cable.
Hey Mr. Macintosh, I followed your suggested path for downgrading on my M1 MacBook Air, but I ran into a problem with my recovery: Long story short, the recovery mode no longer sees my account on the drive as an administrator, and I cannot add new user accounts to the machine. For most uses it works fine and I can certainly continue to use the machine normally, but if I want to modify my settings to add a kernel extension (like Rogue Amoeba’s Loopback) it creates problems and tells me there’s no admin user on the device.
I recovered the drive from Time Machine. What are my options here?
I ended up doing a Configurator restore, which fixed the issue. Thanks for your work-it helped lead me in the right direction.
I just got a brand new M1 Mac mini. It came with Monterey OS. Is it possible to downgrade to Big Sur even though it came with Monterey?
what about downgrade to Big Sur on a mid 2012 MBP?
whats the best way to backup in this case? I cloud is no option for me..
Does this work even if my M1 shipped on Monterey? I can't remember which mine shipped on so I want to make sure it'll work no matter what before I do this.
THX for this video 👍🏻👨🏻💻
i just purchased a mac studio with monterey installed in it, but i'm a music producer and i lost all of my plugins , so is it possible i can downgrade to catalina on a mac studio?
When I erased the HD I got a screen showing illustration of the mac mini with arrow under the power switch and then a slide illustration of the mouse with arrow over the power switch. What does this mean? I couldn't figure out what to do so I shut down and rebooted in recovery mode again. Now the mouse does not work and I cannot select Install macos Big Sur. very frustrating.
I downloaded the USB for Big Sur and installed it just like in the video but when I reboot at press option button it does not show on my options :/ any ideas? I really despise Monterey. Gaming performance is the worst and not compatible with aome of my games.
i erased mackintosh hdd and on internet recovery is loading but also has an issue, -1008f and others help, it is macbook pro 2019 with touch bar what should i do
Hi Mr McIntosh
I have used OpenCore Legacy patcher to upgrade to Ventura from my 2012. I upgraded it to Monterey from High Sierra and it worked great. Since upgrading to Ventura, the Wifi doesnt show up and a few other issues so i would like to go back to Monterey without losing my data. Or do you have a suitable fix for the Ventura Wifi not showing up issue.
Help , I did follow your process to downgrade from Ventura to Big Sur as Ventura does not accept my apogee card while Big Sur does. So I did the bootable USB key and did format my Hard drive but once I am at the step of installing the computer tells me it can’t install on my hard drive and that’s it. Back to egg.
What should I do. I have a M1 with Ventura .
Thank you
Régis
Hi Mr. Macintosh! I run into a problem after downgrading from 12.3 to 11.6 following your guide. Everything seems functionally, until I noticed when tried to download from Safari that it complained there’s no HDD space left, which I have over 600GB free. I then checked Macintosh HD preferences and I see “System” (read & write), “wheel” (Read only), and everyone (read only). My own account which is an admin account is not listed, and I cannot add it, when I try to do that I get (“This operation can’t be completed because you don’t have the necessary permission.”) I even enabled Root access to add it in root mode and I still get the same message. How can I solve this?
Hi I’ve installed big sur on not supported MacBook Pro 2009 but is not possible to download Netflix on the App Store..how can I dove that?
where did the 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 download icons come from? I only have the beta downloadable
thanks man
its working for my MacBook air m1
My Mac mini will not recognise option key
Just goes straight to loading os
Even with wired keyboard
Please advise
Thanks
How would you install macOS Monterey on a Late 2014 iMac (since the cutoff are for 2015 iMacs and newer)?
Hello Mark! You will be able to install monterey with the patchers. I will have a video out as soon as the devs have the code ready 👍
i used this method to downgrade to big sur, but i am ihaving issues soome apps crashing for no reason acess violation error, plus when i got to about this mac system report and audio section i am getting error "There was an error while gathering this information." i want to reinstall macosx from the recovery but it now only says reinstall monetery, what can i do... alot of my programs are not working properly
I can't Enable External USB boot.
When doing permission it said me that there isn't administartor.
resetpassword comman doesn't work also.
Do you have idead what can i do?
Does this work for a 2021 MacBook Pro I bought 3 months ago?
hi bro i also have a macbook air 2017 my scrolling is very choppy in all apple apps and while split screen whenever i try to adjust the screen that thing is also laggy which is very annoying can u plz help me bro🙏🙂
Thank you for the help!
What should I do its telling me installer is damage
After choosing the Big Sur Installer on my usb flash drive it does take me back to macOS utilities after quite a while BUT the only option I ALWAYS get is my starter OS Catalina. Why???
SSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOO helpful!!! thank you sooooooooo much
is it possible that I downgrade from macOS Monterey to Big Sur now. Thank in advance for your answer
I have 1 mac only and one windows computer when I try to reinstall mac os from recovery it shows 18 hrs

I need your help Mr. Macintosh. Is possible to install BigSur on M1 2021? I was trying to do it but I coudn't it!
HELP. After erasing Macintosh HD, the system restarts automatically and only after activates. Doing so it does not give me the option to continue to Big Sur but, instead, I can reinstall Monterey...
hii... i m got issue on ugrading to monterey, wanna downgrade back to big sur. my mac is Macbook pro 2012 model. this downgrade saying compactiable to 2015
Does it also erases downloaded monterey os data files or just downgrades to bigsur ?
2017 mbp. Can I use an external HD instead of a flash drive?
Hello Mr Macintosh
I have MacBook Pro M1
I try to Monterey Beta and after a few days I installed Big Sur again from USB
Yes you’re right recovery Monterey Beta not Big Sur
My question is if I’m upgrading Monterey (Not Beta)
Recovery options it’s still Monterey Beta or Official Monterey ?
Or only way back in normal DFU mode
The problem is I have only 1 Mac
Thank you
I'm glad i put that part into the video to help explain. Yes if you wanted to get recovery back to big sur you would need a 2nd mac. BUT this is not bad if you dont, as you can leve monterey on recovery until the Final or public version launches in the fall. When that happens and you upgrade the recovery version of monterey beta will be updated to the final version. 👍
Thank you 😊
when trying to erase the MAC HD it does not show up in DISK utility. I only get Internal: disk1s1 and MAC HD - data (both greyed out). Is there a solution for this? I am trying to downgrade to Catalina. Thanks
HELP! Since I switched to macOS Monterey 'version 12.6.2' I can't use/access 'Garageband' anymore. Can I undo this? If so, how?
