Been watching your videos for the last three years. I swear I watch one video and I’m confident about buying a 996-997….then I watch another video, and I’m like maybe I won’t get one, then I watch you buying process for your 996 c4S and I’m like yeah. It feasible! Imma do it. Then I watch this video and now I’m like screw it. Stay away from 911s….its been an emotional roller coaster with this channel. 😂😂😂. It’s like having a girlfriend. 😅

I can't imagine owning a Porsche that I couldn't work on. I know my limitations mechanically both in my knowledge and my tools. But basic maintenance is not only rewarding but saves money. I've had 25+ Porsches since 1964. Many as my daily driver. Many driven across the country and back. I always used to plan my ovenights around on the road valve adjusts, 356s. Drop the oil at night, do the valves etc in the am and back on the road. Once my VW bus sucked a valve on the road far from a shop. But I always had tools. So jacked it high enough with two logs, dropped the engine, pulled the offending head and hitch hiked to an outlet that could do a valve job. A few days later back on the road. I spent the days waiting climbing in the Tetons. Any way I've never had a Porsche newer than'73. I can tune MFI, carbs, valves etc. So basically with a screwdriver and a timing light I can keep them going. For me half the hobby is being able to work on them. Plus the old ones are gorgeous to look at not bloated, fun to drive and have all the hp I need. 73S and a 67S.

There were a lot of good points, here. It never ceases to amaze me when people buy a 10-20yo car and they expect not to have to put money into sorting it. You’re always dealing with the previous owner’s habits and 90% of the time that means deferred maintenance. My obsession happens to be the 996tt, and I just assume I’ll have to put in 10k to sort it out. The only way to sort it is to drive it and wait for the weak areas to reveal themselves. Then, you have to address those and move on. That’s the reality. Always get a PPI. I got scammed on my second Cayenne by Porsche Delaware and wound up having to do a lot of work on it.

I am the type of OCD person who cannot let another mechanic touch any of my cars, so part of Porsche ownership means for me, doing all my own maintenance and repairs. As ironic as it sounds, I enjoy working on my cars almost as much as driving them. I love the technical challenge. My wife often jokes that since we've been married, she has never had to wait in a service center other than for tires. The 1982 911 SC I bought last December of 2023 needed some TLC in both paint and other mechanics which is why I was able to get if for a lower price and as of this month, I am caught up. Most of the things it still needs are just OCD things. Doing all my own work, my out of pocket parts cost since ownership is less than a grand. I know there are many owners out there that farm all their repairs and maintenace out to a mechanic which I cannot even fathom the running cost of ownership but understand even with sports cars, many still have no interest or aptitude for wrenching on their own.

Great advice, I have a Boxster it's a 01, 2.7 litter. Have had it for 17 years, love the car, so much fun to drive. Fantastic handling. But have constantly been replacing things over the years. Yeah it's like brand new, but I have so much money in it, I will never get out of it. I will never sell it.😊

I have had 3 911's. 1967s, 2001 cabriolet and now a 2013 911c2. The old air cooled cars can be big money pits. First 2 were private sellers. Last was a trusted long term dealership. I paid a little more, but was fully up to date service wise and carfax was in complete detail. I do all of my own service. If you can, it saves a boat load of cash. I only use top of the line parts. I went in expecting to spend X amount of dollars for keeping the service up to schedule. It is now 11 years old but only 44k miles. 991.1 NA version. Great sound and they have been a very reliable version.

I have also owned many classic porsches and other brands, the biggest lesson I learned is it costs waayyyy more to get a car sorted then to buy a premium example with records at a premium price.

A lot of great information here because there is a combination of things that come together to build the story of a car. I fell into some of these traps back in my BMW buying days. Rebuying the car. Taking as much emotion out of it is the key. I walked away from my dream model (993 CS) four years ago. Too many issues to list and the owner wanted top dollar. Yes, it is worth more today. Still don’t regret walking away as my 95 C4 has been a dream car for 7 years.

Just my anecdotal experience here but....bought a 2016 Cayenne off the lot and after 52,000 miles, never a problem; bought a 2009 C4S cabriolet used with 36,000 miles, now at 46,000 miles...never a problem. These guys are buying troublesome much older cars.

“Maybe you can get there $25,000 later.” 😂😂😂 People need to be prepared to spend the amount of the purchase price of the car (at least) to take care of surprises. And no, a PPI isn’t going to find everything, especially internal engine issues.

@@briandow2974 My point is that there is no definitive 100% never fail way to know if it’s the wrong car or not. You’re not doing engine disassembly for a PPI. Buying a used car of any type is a risk.
I have lived this. I did my due diligence. I bought a very clean, rust free car. The interior was immaculate and looked new. I had a PPI done by a reputable air-cooled Porsche specialist. The car was given a clean bill of health. A couple months later the car was in my shop (blowing smoke). The engine was opened up and it was revealed that many parts were ruined because of corrosion. Valves, timing chain, camshaft, etc. Even two cylinder heads needed to be replaced. It needed far more than the typical air-cooled engine rebuild.

Most PPI's are done by a mechanic. Good to do but people forget with a Classic Porsche from the 50s,60s, even the 70s that these were non galvanized metal and may have a history of damage that is previous and unreported. So I always recommend a separate bodywork specialist evaluation i.e. a body PPI in addition to a mechanical PPI.

Good video. Helpful for some new people moving into the hobby. With that said, many people (if not most) make these buys emotional ones. Folks need to understand that they are buying a USED CAR, regardless of what lingo or terminology is being used to describe “used”. Some examples are better than others but expect to probably spend a few dollars (sometimes is more than a few). Hands on guys will do better than others, as sometimes a fix could be minimal. Taking a car to a shop for every single thing can be cost prohibitive and my advice for those folks is get the newest Porsche you can afford with a warranty if possible. Personally, air-cool cars are not that hard to work on and can be extremely reliable when properly cared for. Unfortunately some shops or dealers are trying to capitalize off the value of air-cool market by overcharging customers for simple things like an oil change. A buyer needs to first decide what best suits his or her lifestyle and budget, then read as much as possible on the model they have zeroed in on.

I think everyone knew this about 15 years ago but Porsches have been so romanticized and are now so expensive that those realities have been sort of swept under the rug. These cars used to be CHEAP so it was worth it

Pretty much all 964's and 993's get the rust around the windshield eventually. It's not a big issue if you do the repairs quickly. If the rust goes all over and deep the windshield frame then it's going to be bigger.

Is it acceptable to do the PPI and also drive it looking for leaks wen driven . I believe if I’m putting the $ down I’d want to c it up close. Thx for the great information

Driving fast cars fast is great at the right time and place!
Driving slow cars fast is great at the right time and place…140 in a 50 come on that’s not happening… hybrid tech is great…incredible torque… every Porsche is unique and all take time to learn and enjoy.
PDK on a new Porsche is fantastic use the paddles if you want more involvement if not buy an air cooled but just have fun and you’ll get through this mid life whatever you are experiencing!
