When the cosmonaut is struck by the space debris, his head is decapitated for a split second, before miraculously reattaching itself to his body in the next scene.
"Unfortunately, Cannon had a habit of taking money from certain films and dividing it among their other projects." That explains a lot. This film came out the same year as "Masters of the Universe". Superman IV's budget? $17 million. Master of the Universe's budget? $22 million. Both films were domestic bombs, but we don't know their overseas takes and whether they helped recoup their budgets or not. Given marketing budgets on top of production budgets, my guess is no, and they had more projects under their belt in the late '80s and early '90s, which led to the Cannon Group closing their doors in 1994. Four other films of note include "Alien from L.A." (featured on season 5 of MST3K), "Cyborg" (born out of sequel ideas to "Masters of the Universe" retooled after Cannon lost the rights to the franchise; you probably wouldn't know it watching the film, but that is the case), "Captain America" (the 1990 film that went direct-to-video in the U.S. in 1992 and was given a limited theatrical release internationally), and "Hellbound" (Cannon's final film and not to be confused with the first sequel to "Hellraiser"). Since I mentioned "Masters of the Universe", I can't help but wonder if you've ever thought about reviewing that film somewhere down the line. XD
+CinematicExcement Fun fact(s)! A good portion of this film was filmed in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire. The location of The Daily Planet office is in fact Avebury, the head office Of Argos, a retail company, This location is also where the scenes in the Hyatt Metropolis and gym were filmed. The Metropolis Museum scenes and the scene in the Daily Planet building foyer where Perry White announces he has bought back the company were filmed in the adjoining Winter Gardens, which now houses a gym and a strip club, Sorry, a Gentleman's Club. The school classroom scene was filmed in a local primary school. The U.N Plaza was filmed at Milton Keynes Central railway station square and the scene where Superman is addressing the U.N is in fact the Borough Council chambers.
" Reeves, we'll give you two million for S4 " "GREAT I will take it...now i have horse jumping money" ....Everything was destroyed because of this film.
At least Jon Cryer went on to redeem himself among DC fans by portraying Lex Luthor in the Arrowverse. Also, we don't count 'Superman III'. Robert Venditti's 'Superman '78' is the true sequel (including featuring a Brainiac based on Yul Brynner).
So Superman III is basically the Batman Forever of the Superman films while Superman IV was the Batman and Robin. That's the impression I'm getting anyways.
I actually like Man of Steel. It wasn't as good as say, The Dark Knight, but it was okay. A solid 3/5 to be fair. Superman IV on the other hand? It Class S SUCKED!
When I finished watching all four Christopher Reeve's Superman movies ( I didn't even know why I typed "finished watching", due to the discs being old and somewhat a bit damaged I wasn't able to watch neither of all 4 Superman movies to the end, just halfway or more) I felt like a surge of depression and unexplained sadness over me. It's been a long time since I watched the original four movies, and I somewhat felt compelled to do so after recent events from Margot Kidder's passing. I wanted to relive that connection that I had as a child, and although I wasn't there to watch the movies in the cinema (really long time ago, wasn't born yet) I at least got to enjoy the magic at home. My only possible explanation for this sadness is that people that I established a connection with them from movies are dying. First Carrie Fisher, then Adam West, and now Margot Kidder. Although I admit that I wasn't crazy over her, considering that the only films that I had which featured such actress is just the Superman films. It just hit me really hard watching them, even if after all I didn't finish them. Just comes to show how magical movies are. They make you laugh, cry, make you love characters and hate them all the same.
Superman IV was a train wreck from beginning to end. From the start we have them making it look like they don't care starting from the credits. Many things didn't work. Lenny Luther the most glaring part. The script doesn't even know what it wants. So many side plots are included that the main plot ends up lost. Oh and is Lenny's IQ before or after subtracting par?
I guess Superman being able to speak in space does make sense given that this is the same guy who can absorb plant energy, use his heat vision to write messages, lift an island of Kryptonite (which would obviously kill him), destroy an entire solar system by sneezing, can travel from the Vega star to Earth within minutes, bench pressing Earth's weight, chaining multiple planets together, sliced one of Saturn's moon in half, uses super-mathematics to count beans, absorbed enough anti-sunlight to wipe out half a galaxy, lifting the Book of Infinite Pages and especially turning back time by reversing the Earth's rotation.
"They made Jonathan Kent look like an a**hole...." Um, Kevin. Costner. Did we have to say anything else? Donner's Superman, despite flaws, is still better than Man of Steel.
+Bane Knightfall Yeah, but if if any of the Star Wars films decided to go through the trouble of being scientifically logical with the sound, all of the space battles would be awkward to watch.
I adore Man of Steel and it's my personal favourite Superman story but I respect your opinion as well and the first Superman is gorgeous to watch....and yep Superman IV is an abortion of a movie

I believe that was one reason. Supposedly the producers also sweetened the pot by offering him a chance to direct Superman V. Obviously that didn't happen.
1:48 Sean, I respect your opinion, but I think you could at least acknowledge that the original Superman movie also had a pretty dumb ending like you say Man of Steel did; in fact, I think it might be even more dumb. I mean, Superman turning back time by spinning the earth backwards; I'm sorry, that doesn't work, even with Superman. I know it's a superhero movie, but that scene is too nonsensical to accept. Just saying, man.
The earth spinning thing was dumb but at least the drama was genuine. In Man of Steel, Krap-El doesnt give a fuck about the thousands of human casualties and you never feel like Lois is in any real danger.

Haha.
He's still new to all this, J Jo. This is his first time actually saving the world and it, along with Zod's death, gives a much more deep reason why he has a 'no-kill' policy. I don't like how many people could have died either; no one in their right mind would. Besides, Superman spinning the Earth backwards could have potentially killed EVERYONE on Earth.

Well in the first movie they didn't even try to disguise NYC as Metropolis; there are cop cars with NYPD painted on the doors in several shots. Not that that excuses Superman IV by any means.

Christopher Reeve only agreed to return on the condition that Cannon finance his pet project, Street Smart, which was actually a pretty good movie.
