September Nor'easter Pummel's Nags Head NC Beach

Days of pounding, wind driven surf have driven water to the dune line in some areas of South Nags Head NC.

What is all the black on the sand ?

It's looks like oil, or some other type of pollution, but it's not. It's a different type of darker sand that consistency is different from the more familiar lighter colored sand. When the ocean is calm and sand dry the darker sand disappears underneath the lighter sand. When the ocean becomes angry it washes away the lighter colored sand leaving to darker.
