It's come to my attention that the free updates Frontiers is getting may make some of the points I made in this video obsolete. If that happens, please be mindful of when this video was made. I might also make a follow-up video at the end of the year when all the updates are out, if I think the additions are substantial enough to talk about.

The phase 2 transition in the Wyvern fight made me feel more pure joy this year than any other game. I haven't heard music sync that well to a structured boss fight since MGR: Revengeance. You don't just stumble into that either, someone(s) at Sonic Team absolutely gets it, and knows how to harness that mid 2000's AMV energy that Sonic has been missing since SA2.
Frontier's doesn't succeed at everything, it stumbles and falls many times, but you get the sense that Sonic Team is really going out on a limb and trying new things, and I hope they see just how much everyone loves the Super Sonic fights.

Influencers and critics bullied Sonic for so many years that Sonic Team grew afraid of trying, so they gave up. The 2010's Sonic games, the so called "Meta Era" was emblematic for Sega's attempt to distance Sonic from it's own past and trying to reinvent it to be more marketable to people who don't like Sonic:
Sonic 4: Proud to be a mediocre mobile game with less content than Sonic 3 & Knuckles and blatant rehash of level tropes.
Sonic Colors: Simple kid friendly storyline that doesn't take itself seriously to appeal to folks who hated Sonic Unleashed.
Sonic Generations: Decent game, saved by the PC port. A celebration of Sonic's history that is afraid to acknowledge its past beyond Chemical Plant. Seriously, there's a cutscene where Robotnik asks who are Sonic's friends, and Eggmans straight up states "They are insignificant".
Sonic Lost World: Another (flawed) attempt to make Sonic more like Mario, ignoring Sonic was created and originally marketed as the anti-Mario.
Sonic Boom: Major attempt of rebranding of Sonic. Who knows what would have happened if Boom Rise of Lyric has succeeded? Remember when Sega at this time called Modern Sonic "Legacy Sonic"?
Sonic Runners: Strangely good mobile game with good gameplay made by Sonic Team. Soundtrack has no right to be that good. Completely ruined by always online DRM, the pay to win roulette, and the 2.0 update that made it more grindy.
Sonic Runners Adventure: Take Sonic Runners and stripes it of all its charm. There you have it.
Sonic Mania: cool game that wouldn't have existed if wasn't for the fans and Iizuka supporting it. Still too reliant on nostalgia and thus doesn't an identity of its own.
Sonic Forces: Parody of a Dark Era Sonic game. Another nostalgia pandering.
Team Sonic Racing: Racing game without the mecanics and character roster of the previous modern Sonic racing games. Soundtrack at least was good, but it arguably the worst of the three recent racing games.
The Meta Era was marked for Sega's to kill Sonic's identity and reshape it to be a generic platformers mascit who could be marketed to the broader audiences. It was an era marked for nostalgia pandering because it was easier to sell merchandise of established tropes such as Green Hill than create new stuff. The Sonic Movie original design would have been the final nail in the coffin. And don't be fooled, Sega and Paramount knew Sonic fans were gonna hate it, but didn't expected to *everyone* to hate the design!
I think the Movie design was the first instance that showed to Sega that people DO care about Sonic's identity, and how reboots like Sonic Boom were destined to crash and burn regardless. And with Sonic Movie 2 bringing more elements from the games and being a bigger success, I think Sega is finally understanding the appeal of Sonic IP. This is why the success of Sonic Frontiers is significant, it is s genuine attempt to try to evolve the games and return to the ambitious storytelling format of the Dark Era.
The Giganto's theme even says "Running from the past is a losing game, It never brings you glory, Been down this road before, Already know the story" Sonic Frontiers is not just a game, it is a open letter to the Sonic fanbase that says "I hear you, and I agree". This is why there's so many references in dialogues and Egg Memos, it is not just the characters talking about the previous adventures, it is Sonic Team embracing EVERYTHING Sonic related, after a decade of pretending they never existed, that Sonic's larger cast of side characters are "insignificant".

    • @PurePari
      @PurePari  Год назад +82

Oh, I completely forgot about the "Legacy Sonic" thing. Sheesh, the 2010s were pretty dire for Sonic.
But yeah, I agree that it feels like they're listening now! The Alternate Credits theme for Frontiers, "One Way Dream", was a similar message from Sonic Team to the fans as well.
As the song says: "You and me, we're built on trust, that's why we can always get up. Even if they laugh, we'll never bite the dust."

    • @havenisthebest99
      @havenisthebest99 Год назад +37

Everything about the Meta Era is just “Sega trying to not make us mad and quit the series while also trying to give critics what they want”: and all they want is a 2D Sidescroller that has no gods of destruction, no voice acting, no multiple playable characters and no “annoying friends”.
Both Sonic 4: like you said, a proud to be mediocre mobile game that blatantly tries to be the Genesis games, but fails in every regard. The only reason it was made was because the Genesis/Saturn purists hated the direction the series went in the 2000s and wanted to go back to the golden years.
Colors: A Wii game that basically is Sega answering to purists and critics complaints following the mixed reception of Unleashed and the other Dark Age games. The game, while good, feels very safe and when there is a stakes situation, Sonic apparently needs to be upbeat because “duh duh Blue rat kids game duh duh”. The jokes in this game always fall flat and they seem forced.
Generations: While a very good game, it’s also very safe. Like you said it’s too afraid to mention the past after Chemical Plant, not even Sky Sanctuary, a GENESIS era level, gets a cutscene. Sega apparently heard some(minimal)complaining about Colors story and basically pulled a “we can’t get criticized for a bad story if there is NO story”. The game is a little short for a $50 game, and did you know there was supposed a cutscene after both Sonic’s come out of Crisis City?
Lost World: exactly what you said. It’s a Mario rip off that has no idea what it wants to be. The story is straight ass, it’s very very safe(because they’re too afraid to talk about the Deadly Six’s backstory, and questions go unanswered), the gameplay feels a little reminiscent of Mario Galaxy and Amy and Knuckles are just…. There, for fan service.
Boom: everything about this project was a disaster the minute that teaser was shown off. It’s a piss poor attempt by Sega to stitch back together Sonic’s very fractured reputation in the West by redesigning the characters. The terrible development cycle, couple that with the game having to be rewritten, reworked and recoded all within the span of a year because Sega made the stupidest decision to make a mediocre license deal with Nintendo to make 3 games on the (at-the-time still trudging along)Wii U, and they wanted the game to be in line with the cartoon series. Just the fuck
Runners: a good mobile game but had a terrible worldwide launch and shut down in less than a year
Runners Adventure: never played it but I’ve heard nobody talk about it, so…… yea…
Mania: a great continuation of 3&K, but it doesn’t achieve perfection because 8 of 13 zones are remixed of Genesis era zones in an attempt by Sega to make the game longer and to appease the middle aging Classic era fans who complain about everything post 1997
Forces: OH. MY. GOD. This game is EXTREMELY safe, too afraid to follow up on it’s dark concepts, too afraid of making fans mad, too afraid of making critics mad and filled with over 30 different Sonic fan’s ideas that it comes together in a discombobulated mess. They tried to appease everyone in the fanbase, but almost NOBODY had a smirk on their face for many reasons:
Classic Sonic-only here to pander once again to Classic fanboys, to tie the game to Mania to use as a crutch incase Forces failed(which it did)and his gameplay is extremely terrible.
The story: made to appeal to Adventure and Dark Age fans, but because Sega is too scared to pissing off critics, they just had to insert unnecessary jokes to pander to those Meta Era fans as well.
Wisps- only here to appease the Colors fanboys and they feel so tacked on and unnecessary. Only two Wisps actually mean a damn, the others are pace breakers and useless when we can fly in the air with hover and burst
Avatar-made to please those Deviantart fanboys who have been making Sonic OCs since the Dawn of RUclips
Boost-made to appease Unleashed-Generations fans(which somewhat worked), but most of Sonic’s move set is GONE. The light speed dash, the drift and the dynamic camera for Classic is just… gone.
TSR: a budget racing game that tries so hard to ride the success of All Stars Racing Transformed that once again, plays verrrrry safe. The character roster is small, the online is dead, and there’s nothing in the game that screams passion: more like screams, WE JUST NEED MONEY.
I’m glad that Frontiers is a response to all those criticisms we’ve been giving for the last 12 almost 13 years, cuz the game is stepping up to get Sonic back to the Mascot throne he should’ve always been sitting on

I generally feel like the "Almost but not quite there" feeling everyone is getting from this game is probably very, very intentional. To me, Frontiers doesn't feel like a total standalone game. It feels like it's meant to be a prologue. A tiny glimpse at something just over the horizon. A teaser, an appetizer, whatever you want to call it.
It's less that I think they deliberately held the game back, and more that I feel like the specific design mentality going into this was for it to be a launchpad for the series to work off of moving forward. It's designed to make you crave more while also drawing in criticism for future games to work off of. Frontiers feels like a commitment to do better from now on, and I've never felt so optimistic that this time they really mean it before as I do now.

    • @Crow_Rising

@@TheLsp2011 Not a prototype exactly. More like a variation on "First Game Syndrome" in which the first game in a series has a tendency of being like an unrefined version of it's sequel. Think the transition from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2, Crash Bandicoot 1 to Crash Bandicoot 2, etc. You wouldn't really call those prototypes either, they're finished products that just don't have the benefit of hindsight.
If you think of Frontiers as a sort of soft reboot, the beginning of a new "era" of Sonic, then that puts it in the same sort of position as other "first games" in which the criticism they receive is able to be used to refine the sequel.

@@ryanfarrelly4647 You could say that. It applies to quite a wide number of games. I didn't come up with the term itself, it's been in use for quite some time to describe a rather broad phenomena. Mario, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, DMC, Borderlands, Mega Man Zero, Azure Striker Gunvolt, etc. Many series feature examples of "First Game Syndrome". The DBZ Legacy of Goku series is a particularly noteworthy example, with the first game being pretty garbage but getting two decent sequels.
There are outliers as well. Not every sequel is better than the game that came first. Spyro 2 is a bit of a mixed bag for example, improving on the formula in some ways while regressing in others. DMC2 is infamously bad with a rather small and niche fanbase despite the rest of the series' popularity. That sort of thing.

I think leaving rings out of the fight is fine imo. It really adds to the intensity watching the ring count drain. Honestly I want the ring count to be a much more important thing to keep an eye on. Adding rings mid fight to me would lessen the intensity. At the very least if it is ever added must be rewarded when the player accomplishes a tricky move.
I’d rather be like, “oh shoot, I have a one minute time limit” than “oh no, I have a one minute time limit, let me grab some rings”
Or even a boss mechanic where sonic loses rings faster by having his energy drained or lose a few rings on powerful hits not avoided or defended properly.

I’ve said it before, and I’m glad I was right, but Frontiers was literally the “do or die” game that Sonic Team needed to work. And considering the bad port we got of Colors, as well as the even buggier port of Origins, a lot of people lost trust since the games just never recover.
Part of it was the failure of ‘06 and how it still affects Sonic games today. But the failure of Boom Rise of Lyric, Shattered Crystal, and even Forces, just proved to do many long time fans that either the team no longer cared, or at least no longer cared for the fans. It fell into the same hole that movie companies did in that they really didn’t have to try anymore with the games. But because of the reviews of love for both movies, as well as the love for the character driven IDW comics, Sonic Team, or what’s left of it, realized that they had to pull out all the stops.
Had Frontiers failed, it truly would’ve been the death of Sonic Games in the eyes of longtime fans. A series that now only works to appeal to Nintendo fans and kids instead of the audience they made in their debut. 06’ could’ve done that, but because of the game’s sales, they were able to bounce back with Unleashed, Colors, and Generations. Boom nearly killed it again, and because of the failure sales, almost didn’t get the same chance 06 had. Forces is in all terms a “middle ground” for those who’ve played it. While it’s not good, it’s not entirely bad either. Therefore they were able to stay afloat.
I’m glad Frontiers came out as successful. One not only for the devs to feel comfortable releasing the 2023 roadmap, but also bringing back longtime fans who’s fire had been reignited.

There is nothing more raw than the Giganto fight. The Knight finale aside.
The sheer POWER Giganto's battle makes you feel is immense. You go from trying and failing to put up a fight against Giganto, the result being getting thrown so hard that Sonic takes one of the biggest losses he's ever taken after failing to land a scratch on the enemy, to making the thing that shrugged off your attacks before visibly reel and struggle to keep its balance us you unleash megaton blows on it at lightning speed.
The way its head reels with every attack to its face, the way it lurches when struck in the shoulders and arms, the flailing when it gets parried, the fact that the parry slams Giganto into the ground so hard that it takes a moment to stand back up, EVERYTHING about this fight screams that Giganto has gone from this massive, insurmountable foe to something that has to realize it's "Just an Enemy".
But nothing, NOTHING, sells this fight to me more than the cyloop. Because you see, you can cyloop Giganto twice, same with Wyvern. Now, with Wyvern you add an extra chain that holds its head in place, letting you deal more damage and keeping it still longer. Cool.
With Giganto, if you Cyloop it while its in the air, it gets slammed back down to the ground so hard that it absolutely eats shit. You hit it so hard that it physically cannot stand for like 5-10 seconds, and during that time, you're free to absolutely whale on its head, which is planted against the ground. Seeing an enemy reduced to a ragdoll in Sonic's hands is the single most satisfying thing I've ever seen, and while Giganto may not have the spectacle of flying across the island that Wyvern has, or the (ahem) *RAWNESS* of slashing Knight in half, it has the sense of sheer, overwhelming strength that SS deserves.
Finally, I saw you mentioned the (unfortunate) state of Supreme. You can kind of notice this issue with all the titans except Giganto. Examples:
Giganto is clearly the most finished/polished fight in the game. There's no pace-breaking "cutscene" transitions for any of his attacks, the lasers on his back work properly, and his parry connects cleanly without going into a cutscene. Aside from a few scrapped attacks (a howl that knocks back SS, and an animation lock attack similar to his clap attack) he's 100% finished and fully realized.
Wyvern is similarly complete, but lacks the fluidity of Giganto. All of Wyvern's attacks aside from its claw swipes and tail swipe go into a cutscene. While this is fine for the finale QTE, it's a shame that there's so many scripted cutscene attacks. The energy pulses that it emits also just... Don't do anything. At the very least, not that I've seen.
Knight is very clearly not a finished fight. Phase 1 goes well enough, but the cracks show in phase 2, mainly the fact that Knight has no attack pattern, and its shoulder lasers just... Don't exist. In an interview, Kishimoto mentioned that the original version of the fight had Super Sonic chasing Knight across Chaos Island, but they worried it was too similar to older fights, so they cut it. I'd assume this was a callback to Black Knight, but we'll probably never know for sure, but it's clear that this more dynamic, cinematic battle was probably a lot of work to throw away, so they didn't have time to wrap up Knight.
And naturally, we come to Supreme (and, as an addendum, The End). Supreme is nowhere near complete beyond its cutscenes. Its wings do not exist in-game, not even in the files, to my knowledge. Its rifle is only used once in the fight, despite it aiming it at Sonic in the opening of the battle. Its entire animation set is literally just Giganto, but flying, and I don't believe it even has a Cyloop interaction. It doesn't even have a parry attack, because parrying gets you locked into a cutscene that knocks you away. Supreme reeks of the desire to remix the first boss as a crazy new cinematic threat, that unfortunately, went incomplete due to Sega's time constraints.
This goes double for The End. At some stage, The End was clearly planned as a Super Sonic fight at some point. From the mention of "The Titans" in the tutorial message, to Sonic's monologue directed towards the Ancients, it reeks of "This was going to be a Super Sonic Fight alongside the titans, similar to Perfect Dark Gaia", but it just never saw completion, and that's a damn shame.
But, there's good news, in the end. Sonic Frontiers broke series records. It's the best selling Sonic Game in Japan. It sold 2.5M in a month. It reached the final round in Players' Voice. And for all that, Sega has finally, FINALLY, decided to allocate more team members, budget, and time to Sonic Team. We can only hope that Sega doesn't pull a Sega and start feeling like they can start splitting the team and rushing out big games again.

While I still love Knight, it's probably the weakest of the first three Titan fights imo. It feels every "gimmicky" in its attempts to ramp up the spectacle, with that hard to control shield and the second phase lasers that don't really do anything. And as raw as things like the counter and ending animations are, I wish they required a BIT more input, since it starts to feel more like watching a movie than fighing an epic battle. I wish it was done like Giganto, where the parry animation flows seamlessly into gameplay without being a separate cutscene. It's still a dope fight, and I love how Knight is designed, but it felt a little less impactful than the first two.
I also really wish we got another "Super" transformation based on the cyber corruption. It would've been really climactic for the ending, since we've been using vanilla Super Sonic the whole game, and it also would've harkened back to the storybook games which Frontiers is somewhat inspired by, since they both introduced new "Super" forms at their endings. At the very least, letting us play as Super Sonic in the overworld would've been awesome.
Speaking of the final fight, my final gripe is I really wish we had a phase where we could play as Super Sonic. Maybe it could be inspired by the Dark Gaia fight in Unleashed where we fly across its surface and attack weak points to open it up?
All in all, the Titan fights are a highlight of Frontiers but could definitely be improved. Supreme and the End are decent but make it feel like game ended on a whimper, which is probably due to SEGA bullying Sonic Team once again. But if they were able to cook up 3 of the best Sonic fights in history under those limitations, the future looks bright for Super Sonic.

Only thing I would say is a little strange is after you complete the game, it takes you back to the exact moment right before you collect the penultimate chaos emerald to get to Supreme. I guess maybe that’s there because it wouldn’t make sense in some way

One think I will say fire Rhea is the whole sonic becoming more and more data corrupted, cyberspace sick? I don’t know what to call it but. During snapCubes stream of that section I remember her saying something that described the feeling of what sonic was dealing with with a better . Comparison than anything I’ve eased so far For the comparison. The mood of that whole island as you do each of those towers and sonic gets More And more worn down.
It’s the mood of the microwave Hallway from metal Gear Solid 4

Not only did Super sonic finally return, THEY MADE SUPER SONIC EXTREMELY BADASS. There’s no joking sonic from forces, this is a sonic who doesn’t fuck around or toy with his enemies. And man oh man…are these fights AWESOME. There’s actual strategy for people going into these fights, such as the rings you had before getting the final emerald are what you’d have going into the fight (unless you had 0 rings, in which case the game gives you 100, but that’s not enough to win half the time) you have to time attacks and counters, and spamming moves doesn’t seem forced, it fits the Ultra fast attack speeds that sonic will attack at. And the endings..OH GOD the endings. Seeing not only a callback to sonic 3s final boss fight with Wyvern, BUT A FUCKING SWORD ENDING WITH THE KNIGHT. Man…I loved it. This is peak sonic right here, and I’m so glad Sonic Team stuck the course as much as they could before the Parasite known as Sega basically said “lul no time for y’all, release date is now”

Something I dont see anyone talk about and one of the better parts of these fights is that there is no banter. no dialogue. no "ThAT LoOks LIke a HoMiNG ShoT". the game just lets you beat the shit out of the titans and listen to the awesome music

(14:13 ) Sonic Team could do what the white world did with the music in Generations. at a point in the music, if you went to a different stage, like from Green Hill to Chemical Plant, the music would change on the beat. I think that could work.

It's probably because I'm still in my honeymoon phase with the game, but Supreme's fight has really grown on me, it definitely could be better tho, but I feel like having I'm here as the first phase of the final boss (Second would be The End) instead of another adrenaline pumping banger really helps to sell how much more serious Sonic is in this specific fight and what is at stake, now it's not only personal but also to save the world (Kinda repetitive, but it works). Still, I would've liked it more if it was a combination of the other 3 bosses, the first phase being the Giganto fight but a little bit more difficult (As it already is), the second phase being Supreme trying to to take distance with the wings to shoot Sonic with the rifle, and the player has to dodge the yellow projectiles and the rifle while chasing him, just like Wyvern's fight, and the third phase being Supreme now going full attack, now chasing and matching the speed of Sonic, kinda like Knight (To be honest I don't know how to make it similar to Knight without giving Supreme a Melee weapon), that would really sell to me that Supreme is the most powerful out of the 4 Titans

For the rings critique, apparently for giganto's fight they had planned to have Amy somehow fly over to get us rings, but it caused issues in how smooth the fight felt, so they cut the idea entirely... I guess not having rings just made the fights all the more difficult and intense 😂

I have been playing this game with my 3 and 5 year old sons and it's been BETTER than I expected. Beforehand we bonded over Forces even though I saw it as hot garbage. My 5 year old fell in love with the music and colors of Colors remastered and my 3 year old chuckles at everything in Mania so that's his favorite. But they both LOVE Frontiers and the best part is, SO DO I! I am SO HYPED and we have such a blast playing. Giganto took me COMPLETELY by surprise! Not for being a tough fight (because he really wasn't, the game mechanics certainly allow you to have fun but not out of necessity since you could practically button mash your way through most of it) but because the cinamatics and music tied together so well with that gameplay that it honestly just blew my mind. That kill shot through the body was BRUTAL!!
I also thank you for talking enough about it without spoiling anything. I am currently on the second island and about to fight my second Titan and you made it very clear when you would discuss each one so I am going to pause here at 9:50 and come back when I have beaten the game. I am so happy to see us Sonic fans actually legitimately enjoying a game. WE ARE EATING GOOD TONIGHT!

I cried through every moment of sonic frontiers. Now physically but emotionally. I felt so empty the past few years when sonic lost it's spark. And then the sonic frontiers released. It lived up to everything I wanted it to be. It was one thing. And that was to bring him back better than ever. I do think that the formula they are working with which they use in frontiers is a good thing to use in future sonic games. Also I'm so hyped for the updates! I want more STORY! Also super sonic has peaked higher than before. Aight goku try taking on super sonic now. He has just got so much more powerful. He has literally become what the chaos emeralds power should give.

my absolute only gripe with frontiers is the aesthetic. It feels very sandboxy and almost like the whole game is being played on a test level. However, i like to think frontiers is more so a mechanics test and also the whole game still works conceptually speaking. If frontiers just had a nicer, more connected world, it would quite literally be the best sonic game in my opinion. Everything else works really well, and i do hope this is a step in the right direction moving forward.

Supreme being Giganto with extra steps would be fine, it's the natural progression of skill. But it falls short as a final boss, because the ACTUAL final boss is just a round of Ikaruga. A difficult round of Ikaruga, but still Ikaruga and not Super Sonic. I would have taken guarding Super Eggman while he charges his laser piss over Ikaruga.
    Wonderful editing btw! Great video.
