    Hello, guys!
    Today, I'm with my Australian mate, Walter, and we're going to be learning some basic Australian expressions that local people use almost every day!
    Besides British English and American English, Australian English also has a lot of unique words and phrases! Let's find out what they are!
    Hope you enjoy it! :)

    I’ve never in my life heard “shall we go out for maccas”. You just shout “maccas run” and everyone agrees.

    • @FionaEm

      And we never say "shall" 😂 It's far too formal.

    they forgot to say most of us Australians swear very casually.

    • @KozzieTV

      Haha, right we could probably do an hour video if we taught the swearing slang.

    • @dante9883
      @dante9883 6 лет назад +18

      Yes I'm Australian and swearing is alot more more common than most country's if other countries hear the words we use they would be very offended

    • @Coreoreo
      @Coreoreo 6 лет назад +4

      that shit sounds awesome! lol I'm American, and yes of course we cuss/ swear/ curse alot, but more cautiously or circumstantially. I don't think quite as casually as "ya'll" Aussie's.

    • @aussie4560
      @aussie4560 6 лет назад +12

      Corey D yeah example " hey cunt how you going" is something I'll say with my really good friends and I'll say " hey mate" for anyone else. Emphasis on the fact we only swear with close friends or family. If I did it round a stranger it would be rude. Although sometimes you will catch us cussing at work around customers like "holy shit" or "fucking hell" we try not to because work doesn't like it, and rightly so. But because we don't censore ourself normally it slips.

    • @chimcham6762
      @chimcham6762 6 лет назад +6

      aidan noble I didn’t know I swore so much until a friend of mine who was a foreigner brought up just how much I curse lol it just flows so casually/naturally. I say “fucking hell” a lot but when I am around people I shouldn’t say it to, I say “bloody hell” which ironically is cursing but we don’t even see it that way.

    • @larkfeast
      @larkfeast 6 лет назад +13

      Its a parody flag. It's an Australian flag with the flag of Ireland instead of the Union Jack.

    • @Coreoreo
      @Coreoreo 6 лет назад +3

      I'm American and YES, we definetly hear that as "Sweet-ass," which could mean basically the same thing, very sweet, like badass: very bad (bad meaning good or cool, LOL). But then ass of course also refers to "rear end," butt or booty, which is where jokes tend to develop.

    • @KozzieTV

      Helen Luu Haha, it’s the tone that makes it really Australian lol

    • @KanyeT1306
      @KanyeT1306 5 лет назад +8

      The best thing about the word mate for us is that it can very easily vary in context depending on how you pronounce it. Saying mate to your best friend, saying mate to a stranger, or saying mate to someone you're annoyed with, even though they are the same word, really have different meanings depending the accent you put on it.

    • @Emmsies_OuO
      @Emmsies_OuO 5 лет назад +1

      Rachel Borowyckyj Same! Heaps of these Aussie English to 'standard' British English videos have people from Melbourne or other bigger cities that tend to use more Americanisms or Britishisms. So it's nice to have someone who uses a more wide-spread and applicable Australian English. 😊

    • @a_lost_staysider
      @a_lost_staysider 5 лет назад

      May be because I'm young, and my parents were migrants and my friends or their parents were migrants and im from Sydney but I've rarely heard any of those slang and only heard them through videos. My friends would not recognise any or barely any of these words cuz they don't watch these videos so I teach them when other kids pretend to be bogan and make fun of the aussie accent.

    Which makes sense, southerners have a similar way of speaking, shortening sentences by cutting words.

      Fair Dinkum = Good or used to emphasise.
      Dinkum = gold
      Gold rush in Victoria had a small issue with fools gold so finding Fair Dinkum eventually tuned into a positive term.
      Real shame less people are using old slang.

      My ex's mother used to (or maybe she does) drink practically from the Goon Bag. I only drank Cask Wine if it was with OJ and you would likely be in for a mad hangover the next day.

    From an older person’s perspective a goon is a glass flagon bottle and was around long before the wine cask. You can still buy a goon today, usually filled with fortified wines like sherry and port. I have never heard a wine cask called a goon.

    I just found out from this that Australian use the word tea for dinner. My Australian coworker often use the word tea with me and most of the time i actually thought he literally meant drinking tea. So one day he asked me out for tea and i took him to Starbucks and his reaction meant something. Now i know why.
    Thanks heaps

    I'm wondering if G'day, fair dinkum and barbie is more common in the eastern states or NT because I have grown up in both the country and suburbs in WA and have barely ever heard G'day or Barbie in real life and have never heard fair dinkum. The only time I ever really hear these is on TV when people are talking about how we talk haha.

    Oh I didn't actually realise that Australians used the term 'sweet as' too, thought that was just a NZ thing! I think I've heard of 'fair dinkum' before, it seems familiar but I'm not sure if it's cause Kiwis say that too or I'm just recalling vague childhood memories of watching Aussie TV shows or something. 근데 snag, chook랑 goon은 완전 처음 접하는 것 같아요 ㅋㅋㅋ 신기해요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 호주영어에서 영국영어로 통역(?)해야 하는 빌리님 모습도 재밌었고요!

      Mandarinen Zeit (귤TV) Hey there, you’re right, New Zealand is very well known to use “Sweet as” however Australians sometimes try and imitate the New Zealand accent when using “sweet as” eventually, it sort of became a normal thing in Australia.

      Snag는 소세지씨즐(버닝스) 접하면서 알게 된 단어고, Chook은 예전에 아웃백스테이크에서도 치킨텐더샐러드 라는 메뉴 대신에 축텐더샐러드라고 썼었죠. 지금은 바꿨지만. goon은 저도 처음 들어보네요 와인을 잘 안먹다보니

    Us Aussies are very slack and love to shorten words like, 'Melbourne'. Outside of Australia, most would say it as 'Mel-born'. Generally here for most people it sounds like we are saying either 'Mel-ben' or 'Mel-bin'. I'm a 'Mel-bin' kinda girl, coz it's my state capital ;) 2hrs away

      Not really.
      Grog is basically any alcohol. Goon is more specific to cask wine but may be used to refer to an unknown alcohol of cheap quality, nut then you are more likely to call it "piss".
