  • A wide range of Hellblade 2 previews emerged last week, but what have we learned about the game and is the dynamic resolution 30fps revelation in any way surprising? John, Rich and Alex share their thoughts while also sharing reactions to the latest chapter in the PS Portal hack story and Nightdive's POed remaster non-April fool. Alex shares news of his experiments with Intel's PresentMon 2.0 - and how it will change our PC games and hardware coverage - while there's intrigue and some level of excitement surrounding Intel's latest XeSS news.

    Thanks a bunch for the mention on stopkillinggames! As far as options, we're not trying to mandate any one way of preventing game destructions, just that SOMETHING has to be done for it to be in a playable state after support ends and thankfully this practice hasn't been tested in quite a few countries. The more complaints people file, the more we'll likely have something happen!

    You ever hear of the "law of constancy of pain"? It's this joking concept from Pixar computer animation, whereby even though processing power has increased exponentially, that processing power is simply used for higher quality rendering and more complex scenes, and as a result the render times have remained about the same for 30 years. I think that may be where 30 fps on console is at, and I'm not so sure it's going away any time soon, unfortunately - but at least we have 60 fps options in most major games.

    IMO the most important thing about The Crew not really delved into here is the fact that... It's literally a single player game! Ubisoft's marketing for it would make you think otherwise, but, the game is legit just a checklist style open world game (typical Ubi stuff) but you're in a car the whole game instead of being a human dude. Like seriously, when you load up the game the first time you're greeted with a scripted race + exposition dump followed by an expensive looking pre-rendered cutscene and then you're thrown out into the world to go find more story content.
    To me that is why all of this is blowing up right now, cause even though the game had multiplayer it was all optional. This is just your bog standard Ubisoft single player game and it's completely gone now because of incompetence if we're being charitable or malice if we're being cynical.

    • @davidrenton

      while you are right, the very premise of it was there are people out in the real world, and to be honest the way it worked was great far better than Forza Horizon. So they have a game called the "the Crew" where the crew bit is no longer a thing. the PVP racing was a sidenote, the main thing was you just drive meet up with randoms all over the map, and do long drives in the Open World.
      Also the DLC was MP focused such as the Police v Robbers
      i think they figure well you have the Crew 2 that is now more feature complete than 1 and the map is the same but more detailed, more open.
      If they introduced Cops v Robbers into 2, then the Crew 1 would not be as missed.

    The presentmon data really is a game changer. It is a bit shocking that it's taken us until 2024 to have accessible ways to track what the CPU and GPU are doing in a game (the two most important components that we've been using for 30 years). The closest you've had up until this point are various debugging tools, but they were always a pain and complicated and I get the feeling that even in terms of game development, were really only used by the engineers. Actual game designers/artists etc, the people whose decisions have big impacts on game performance, probably aren't looking at CPU and GPU busy times. Which is a shame as even in Web Design, artists had to start becoming aware of technical details of the underlying HTML, Javascript, PHP CSS etc many years ago, and the industry evolved to support this.
    Hopefully if DF can do a good enough job with this presentation enough important people will take notice and want this info available to themselves as well.

    • @TheDarksideFNothing
      @TheDarksideFNothing Месяц назад +4

      @@stangamer1151 You have to remember that TVs are primarily designed for viewing video content, not games. 4k is now pretty standard in the video world and a 1440p stop gap wasn't really necessary for that type of medium and didn't make much sense to do as an industry.
      Plus, at normal TV viewing distances the blurring from simple upscaling methods is sooooo much less noticeable for most people compared to on a monitor. They optimized for the majority of content and the majority of viewers.
      Personally, I don't think there would be much point to a 1440p TV unless you're using it like a monitor, in which case I'd just recommend you get a monitor.

    • @stangamer1151
      @stangamer1151 Месяц назад

      @@TheDarksideFNothing The problem is there are not many big monitors, like 42-46 inches. And most of them cost more than a good 4K TV. Plus, monitors usually do not have headphone output and speakers.
      For me 1440p screen looks identical to 4K one from a medium viewing distance (if we are talking about native renderer). But upscaled 4K renderer on a 4K screen looks less detailed, than native 1440p on a 1440p screen. 4K screens are very sensitive to the amount of rendered pixels, unfortunately.

    • @TheDarksideFNothing
      @TheDarksideFNothing Месяц назад +1

      @@stangamer1151 my point is that you have an extremely niche use case and that's why you don't see products that really satisfy your needs.
      TVs are generally made for viewing video content from far away, monitors are generally made to sit on top of a desk relatively close up where above 40ish inches becomes unusably large.
      Unfortunately, you probably represent less than 1% of people buying displays, so they just don't make anything that suits your needs perfectly.

    Also in case of The Crew Ubisoft wouldn't have to make the server software available. All they would have to do would be to update the game so that you can access the single player content such as the campaign and AI races offline. Marvel's Avengers is getting an update like that now that it's shutting down meaning that you will continue to be able to play it.

    Richard said Pro consoles last generation had an 80/20 split 'when available'. Wasn't that the total sales split across the entire generation? So given a literal mid generation launch, doesn't that mean they actually sold at a 60/40 split for the period they were available? edit: obviously the sales curve will play into that as my simple example assumes a straight line plot, but if sales tapered off towards the end of the generation that would just favour the Pro sales split even more.

So many words in the online lexicon really do devolve and lose their meaning without context. Where as originally it would be something line "John has an unfair or unconscious bias towards product xxx". Where it becomes evident when everything else is equal and you can see their natural learning towards a direction. Not when you have "here are the reasons why I prefer X over Y" there is nothing unconscious, implicit or unfair in that, they literally state their reasons.

No one really cared about the campaign in each game, but the MP part had such a dedicated following, KZ2, 3 and even Shadowfail, cough... fall, was a HUGE part of my MP gaming life. Am I right in saying that most of the Killzone games MP wise were peer to peer for hosting? This had it's own issues, but would it allow an easier way for MP games to "live forever" if only the game assets? were stored on a GG server. I am sure GG can afford a server for that minimum amount of data, after what they made from the Horizon franchise and as for Ubisoft... well. I would love to really understand the complications and costs a Game dev/company would have to really consider. All of the online support for Killzone was dropped a while back and even the MP games we were running in our own friends community not Public were no longer possible. Loosing our clans hurt so much after years of our lives are ingrained in that pixel soil.

There's so much granular detail you can do with that, and it seems like the NPCs that populate the world were built in the same way as the player/pawn. It's like the character creator still has its "hooks" in the NPCs, rather than them being baked out to just meshes. Just speculation, of course.
    I guess if it's physics-related, It could be that they're calculating all the interactions with the game world directly to some greater level of detail than is necessary or even apparent. Maybe they needed to up the accuracy to keep things from falling through the world or something.
