- Here I take a stroll from one end of The Pantiles in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, to the other - talking as I go about this famous thoroughfare in the beautiful spa town.
The Pantiles is a mixture of shops, wine bars, cafes and restaurants housed in charming old buildings in the heart of Tunbridge Wells. I talk briefly about how the historic area was acquired some years ago by Norwich-based commercial property group Targetfollow.
During the commentary, I mention the discovery in 1606 of the Chalybeate Spring, the famous mineral water source in Royal Tunbridge Wells. Whereas I pronounce it Chally Beet, chalybeate is apparently pronounced ka-lee-bee-at.
At the height of its popularity in the 18th century, the iron-rich spring water was reputed to cure all sorts of ills from infertility and hangovers to obesity and ‘a moist brain’.
