  • Please join me in this video, Political Scandal: Christine Keeler Death of a 60s Icon.
Christine Margaret Keeler (born 22 February 1942 and died 4 December 2017) was a former model and showgirl.
Her meeting with society osteopath Stephen Ward at Murray's Cabaret Club in London drew her into fashionable circles.
During the height of the Cold War, Christine Keeler had intimate relationships with both a married government minister, John Profumo, and a Soviet diplomat.
A shooting between two of her other lovers prompted the press to look into her, revealing that her affairs could endanger national security.
Profumo denied any wrongdoing in the House of Commons but later admitted that he had lied. This incident became known as the Profumo affair, it would wreck many lives - both personal and professional, it would bring down Harold Macmillan's Conservative government in 1963, and one of the leading protagonists - Stephen Ward would by his own hand as a result.
Who was Christine Keeler? and what happened to her? Join me for a walk around Wraysbury as we learn about Christine Keeler's childhood and her sad death at the age of 75.

Thanks for this video really enjoyed listening. I will never forget when Sue Lawley interviewed Christine years after the scandal, the way how she spoke to Christine, the kind of questions she asked, you could clearly tell she looked down on her almost with distain. But Christine was kind and classy throughout which highlighted to me the kind of person Christine was.

Beautifully handled. Thank you. An ordinary girl, caught-up in extra-ordinary events. Once upon a time, Government Ministers were granted an unearned amount of respect. Nowadays, this would not be scandalous. It would be Tuesday. Complete respect to Christine. She handled herself with dignity, while the elite scrambled to disassociate themselves.

Thank you for an excellent and sensitive treatment of Christine Keeler. It showed the social side of the early 60s in which her adult life was beginning. Her life after "Profumo" was a struggle perpetuated by The Establishment to launder its own sanctimony and obscure its embarrassment. Her son's words set the record straight for us.

Wow! Now you are brining back a lot of memories. On the day this scandal broke in Australia; I was at a Railway Station named EDITHVALE, in Victoria, (on the Frankston Line) which was the railway station I was waiting for a train at on that Sunday morning. to take me home. I was 17 years old then; going on 18 years and my mind was on obtaining my Drivers' Licence in June 1964. I can remember feeling dreadfully sorry for Profumo's wife Valerie. I also remember the suicide of Stephen Ward. From memory; all this hanky panky took place at Cliveden - Correct me if I am wrong, and wasn't Cliveden the former home of Lord & Lady Astor?

Born in 1958, I was about five at this time. The Profumo affair was the sort of scandal that wasn’t suitable for a child’s ears but nevertheless I was vaguely aware of it. The story of Christine Keeler, and the Profumo Affair has always fascinated me. I saw the film 🎥 “Scandal” and the recent television 📺 series. I just love the 1960s nostalgia of it all. John Major read the secret documents when he was Prime Minister, and decided that they were still too sensitive to be made public!! I was born in 1966, so I don’t really remember the 1960s. Whenever I hear music from the late 60s, I always find it so evocative. There must be a hippie in me ha! ha! Thank you again for another interesting video 📹 When you do a tribute to Mandy Rice Davies, make sure you quote her other immortal line: “My whole life has been one long slow slide into respectability!”... or words to that affect. 😃 Big hugs to Timmy🐶

There were some similarities between CK and my own childhood. I can understand how she sought a different life. I've always felt Mandy Rice.. was jealous of her. In many photos MRD looks cold and calculating. When I was 14 the progressive female drama teacher at my school picked me out to perform a solo somewhat risque dance routine...using the famous chair pose of Christine. The Headmaster refused permission for the performance, which was a shame as we'd put a lot of time and thought into it. Thank you for another well put together presentation.

I'm a Yank, who was 11 in 1963. I remember the thing very well, though as you might imagine, American
newspapers were not detailed in their accounts. I grasped the essence of it, though. Profumo was almost certainly a future Prime Minister. I remember reading that JFK was distinctly unsettled by the whole thing, which is understandable and funny. I'd enjoy a video about Profumo himself, who, as I understand, lived quite an admirable life after his downfall. I'm extremely enthusiastic about the fifteen years or so of British life pre - Beatles: the Ealing comedies, anything with Peter Sellers in it, the general milieu.

Thank you for a sensitive portrait of Christine Keeler. This is the first time in ages that I have seen Stephen Ward's portrait of Prince Philip! I was 14 years old when the scandal broke open in May, 1963, hitting American newspapers. Ward was known as the world's best osteopath and also as a talented artist. He treated Winston Churchill, the Royal Family, the peerage, movie stars, politicians, world leaders, everyone. He went to Buckingham Palace to draw Philip and the Queen Mum. As the scandal grew, and details of sex parties came out, those portraits stopped being shown in the news. I haven't seen Philip's drawing in over 50 years! "The Crown" has a scene where Samuel West as Anthony Blunt refers to procurement of the portrait at great expense, to protect Philip, and threatens exposure if he loses his job at the Palace. British Intelligence has just informed the Queen that Blunt is a double agent, working for the Russians. I have wondered, over the decades, what happened to Ward's drawing of Philip and the Queen Mum (and possibly others) and whether or not the drawings still exist.

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre From what I've heard in an interview with writer Douglas Thompson, Anthony Blunt did indeed purchase all of Stephen Ward's drawings of the Royal Family, including Princess Margaret, from a gallery where his work was being displayed when the scandal broke. Whether he did this at the behest of Buckingham Palace or on his own is not known. What I don't get about Stephen Ward is, he was known for having magic fingers when it came to fixing peoples' backs. I wonder that he didn't have some money put by, and could have gone far enough away from England and set up shop somewhere else, like Athens. I think he would've had a thriving practice in no time, though it would've meant exile from the British aristocrats that he was so enamored of. Had he lived, I wonder how long he would've spent in prison on a pandering conviction. Everyone knew the charges were bullshit. The women testified that he was their pimp because they were threatened with loss of their children and long prison sentences if they didn't. I'm not convinced he wasn't murdered. It is a dangerous thing to know the sexual secrets of powerful men.

Well, I wish we could sit and have a long chat about Greece, and interesting memorials like Marilyn Monroe's, and other unusual stuff in LA.
I have to tell you I hated LA when we arrived 24 years ago, because it was a massive anticlimax, after having lived in vibrant Athens. I'm only here because of my husband (and sadly LA has declined drastically because of corruption....oh there's so much to talk about).

I do not know if this is fact or fiction, but it was said that Profumo used to bring a girl probably Keeler down to an isolated cottage close to Abergavenny. I was about 9/10 yrs old.The whole story lived on for many years, and caught my attention. So i read up on it. Oh the many sides to this tale😢😊😮 like John le Carrie novel. For me 3 ordinary people are the heart of this story Stephen Ward,Mandy Rice Davis & Christine. Ward the society figure.Who was easy to cut off& cast out😢The girls 👭 I never thought of them as prostitutes . They were the swinging 60's, the good time girls, a bit of a laugh at life😂Mandy seemed to enjoy the novelty ,the naughtiness of the situation, and played the game.Christine ,i felt was out of her depth against the system. And we all know, you can't beat the "system " it wore her down and, short term won.Ward paid a very high price, but in the long run Profumo & Hobson and Keeler showed grit and i believe that the public forgave them. Or al least understood them. Some😢Some😊 but interesting lives lived❤ ❤ that's all for now.Hugs and kisses 😊❤Allan&Family

At the time I was in Libya serving on an R.A.F. base. About the time of the Cuban Missile crisis six Russian MIG fighters landed at that base. This incident is described in a soon to be published book I've written which is a humourous account of life around me - as all our behaviour due to the isolation was very eccentric. It is called Sweating On My Chitty Box.

Oh wow that’s brilliant - and the book’s title made me laugh out loud! I shall look forward to reading that - when will it be published?

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre The perhaps enigmatic title is explained in the last chapter. The book is illustrated by sketches by a cartoon artist Steve Meyers. It will be published some time this year - at the moment it is at the proof reading stage so I have no definite date but the contract has been signed etc.

Profumo after the scandal was devoted to helping the poor of the east end of London.I know he was guilty of adultery and mixed with questionable people but it takes two to tango..I’ve never bought that Keeler was that innocent and done well selling herself to the “best and highest in society..Which the KGB would have been very interested in such a women with her dubious connections..Ward’s involvement and death seems suspect..I’ve read some on Ward and the impression I got of him was he was a seedy character,on the make for thrills and cash..
In all everyone involvement was shady and dangerous for the times of the Cold War..But out of all John Profumo payed a hefty price..
