His boss got an advantage in Malay since his boss parental side was peranakan chinese.
For most Chinese of new gen born after the 1960s, Malay language usage was not used in their family circle and neither was it compulsorily taught in school.

For those who compare his malay with LHL, it was not a fair comparison. LHL was born in the era where singapore was still under Malaya. An old geneeation of chinese can comverse in malay fluently because at that time english was not widely spoken yet. Only some educated government servant speak english. As for lawrence, he was born after singapore gain independent from malaysia. He is considered new generation singaporean where english already widely spoken on the island

LHL is a genius, speaks Mandarin, Malay, some Russian, and English better than the respective native speakers. His brain is wired superbly for that and he has 3 diplomas in 3 years at Cambridge. He is a rare Senior Wrangler, the top Maths student in all UK in his graduating year. The second wrangler came in a distance second that year. LHL's cognition and intellectual ability exceeds his parents, both scholars. His mother was a Queen Scholar and the King (founder of SG) is a double-first law graduate. The King believes in eugenics, so he married the Queen, and gave birth to a proof of concept - Prince LHL.
I speak Mandarin bc I married a Shanghainese surgeon, has an honour degree in Maths from U of London, but my GPA is 3.98/4 in my management doctorate degree. So, I'm not too shabby. I was working in the same building with LHL in Chartered Industries when he was a Colonel. He is a v modest, empathetic person, gave me a broad smile when we were alone in the computer room a few times. Just say we connected telepathically, never spoken. I spoke COBOL then, and he probably Fortran, so we did not compute at that moment in time. I really like him because of his empathy, social responsibility, and intellectual prowess.
As for Lawrence Wong, I like him too bc LHL likes him for good reasons. If anything, he needs to drop "Lawrence", which is an anglo name. He should be proud of his Chinese ancestry as should everyone. Indians never use english names, winning my utmost respect on self-respect. None of the Lees use english names neither. But Wong's first speech mentioned "We are not an ally of usa or of China, we only serve the interests of Singapore" is a forceful and forthright swearing in statement as the new SG PM". That is the only form of "swearing" that is socially, politically, and morally correct, especially in a superbly governed state that is Singapore.

Sir, are you still required to speak Malay first? Your dad may have taught you some Malay, I supposed. That will be great if you can speak.

There are many initiatives and policies that have been put forward by the PAP Government that emphasise and demarcate a worsening racial, ethnic and religious divide between the various communities in Singapore.

The PAP Government is certainly responsible for engineering and maintaining the ethnic divide. Race-based politics and policies are not the way forward for Singapore.

I don't believe so. A lot of that is imported and imagined, taking the problems happening outside and then localise it to our context. Like the israel issue. Muslims and Jews in Singapore have no issues even in the past. In fact, our Jewish people are not even the same kind, we have Sephardics and Mizrahis (from Lebanon, Armenia) not Ashkenazis. But sinkies read news and love to start to import the "progressive" ang moh problems and then imagine it in our shores. Almost like some deep seated fetish to have the same problems like the ang mohs. As if to impress the ang mohs that "we are just like them".

@@user-jg5ut9xj1e Jews aren’t even a note in SG given how small their numbers are, if we had alot of them like in the West, we’d be subservient to Israel already
