What's next for Singapore with Lawrence Wong as prime minister?

  • With Lawrence Wong inaugurated as only the fourth prime minister in nearly 60 years, Singapore remains under the long-standing rule of a single party since its independence. This small, once-developing nation has transformed into one of the world's most prosperous, boasting a highly efficient and low-corruption government. However, human rights groups continue to criticise the country for its restrictions on political freedom and civil liberties. Despite this, Wong has committed to upholding the policies that have propelled Singapore to its current economic success.

as a Singaporean I STRONGLY DISAGREE that we have an oppressive society. We enjoy more freedom and progression than many Western countries. It's a very Western narrative to say we are oppressed - it is completely and utterly untrue. Yes, we don't allow strikes, which is disruptive and ineffective. Instead we have proper channels and feedback areas if you're unhappy about something you can write to the relevant departments to have your views shared. You can even write to the forums if you wish!! SG Govt also takes a strong stance against falsehoods - if you publish something false, be prepared to face the consequences. Don't you think this is a responsible and effective way of functioning as a society?

Singapore doesnt have the homeless, drugs, high medical cost, gun violence US is facing now.

Totally agree. And, what ‘treatment on foreign workers’ was the gentleman referring to? May be consider reading the foreign work employment act if he meant it in the negative way.

AGREEED!!!!!! I'm half white half Asian, and I agree that the Western media loves to propagate their stupid ideas of freedom, liberty - it's all so hypocritical of them. Essentially the whites, especially British people, still look down on Asians and that's the fact. Not trying to be racist, but this is my observation as a history and media student.

These 3 stooges talking about Singapore and knowing nothing about Singapore. Let me state it clear the world dont owe Singapore a living! Singapore is just a red dot on the map and we dont have a vast hinterland to fall back on, we dont have natural resources like oil or gas or minerals to sustain us.
We dont need change for the sake of change! We need change only if we can move up the economic ladder and keep Singapore relevant to the world otherwise Singapore and our dreams are finished!
All these hyprocrisy about freedom and rights that our youth aspire to as one of the guest stated is just his own oppinion and nothing else. We in Singapore enjoy rule of law and noone is about the law, once Singapore go down the way of so called western liberal ideas Singapore is finished we wont get a 2nd chance and the whole world will forget about Singapore.

Their main concern is about woke-ism; hence they like living in the "open", e.g. street living with all the freedom to show yourself in your birthday suit without any accountability and responsibility; and that is democracy as they would want others to follow especially the under-educated and under-performing economies. Such scenario will ensure they will control the world.

After all said and done, we must admit that Sinngapore have had to compete on an international level and records show that she has made significant changes n progress - fron a 3rd to a 1st world! We have to give the new PM a chance. After listening to his speeches and interviews he together with his team will take Singapore to a higher level. Thank God, we do not have the problems of the West - strikes, gun violence etc.

Talk is so cheap. Idealism does not make what Singapore is today. Singapore is a small island without any resources. Following western views for "human rights, freedom of speech, western labour movements" will make a better Singapore? We have a successful formula and polices. We do not need to follow others path of their way of life!

As a Singaporean, it is my firm belief that Lawrence Wong will be a great PM, Singapore has multiple platforms for people to openly express their views with lawmakers. They do listen to people. these r the facts. dun be so pessimistic, PM Wong just took over.
Also, the word "persecution" is a very stromg accusation to make, especially when u dun quote any facts (since there isn't any that exist to support ur claim). pls refrain from stirring sentiments in SG, we dun want to experience any of the chaos going on in other places ok

whether is it POFMA, human right as to walk on the street with a ply card, min pay,, we shouldnt expect the ruling party to change a lot. why should they? the opposition can raise these in their election promises. in the end every singaporean has a vote to vote the party they would like in the next 5 years or more. if oppostion can't win, and still expect the ruling party to change their style and outlook of thing, i think that is not fair.

I am feeling so blessed that sg does not have gun violence like other countries do. The number of deaths by gun violence in other nations is staggering. Thank God for a safe country like Singapore. Coming back to Singapore from overseas, there are so many things that Singaporeans take for granted. Our roads, our cleanliness, everything is well ordered. There is much work done and we owe every success to the founding fathers but ultimately to God who blessed the nation and who hears our prayers for our leaders and grants them the wisdom and has prospered the nation. Personally, thankful that Lawrence Wong is the new PM.

I am not a Singaporean but having visited Singapore in the early 70s especially its port operations, I had real doubt if LKY could make it into an international center. But he was willing to get the best from anywhere and he would pay a senior executive triple what that gentleman was paid to secure him. We were surprised but we also knew his determination to get the best around. And this policy is still being pursued but of course the locals are also being groomed as shown by PISA. The people of Singapore had enjoyed the leadership of PAP for over half a century so why risk it just because some Westerners prefer the word democracy or demo-crazy!

Generally balanced views in this episode. Before anyone judges us, look at the comments. You get a very clear sense that Singaporeans know that whilst SG is not perfect, it is a working democracy and harmonious society. We accept it and most cherish our island nation home (there will be haters, one Mr Amos Yee has new life in the US).
I find it somewhat hypocritical for foreign media/scholars to judge our democracy through their morality and values; Why do the west insist that their form of democracy is the only form of democracy? And then some even attempt to color our policies to be pro-Chinese/pro-American or our brand our governance s authoritarian/flawed democracy.
We are sovereign, we act and plan in our best interests and come what may in this increasingly multi-polar world.
