If the school want their athletic teams to compete on the FBS level and they’re willing to pay for it, they should be welcome to do it. Going from FCS to FBS adds another 22 scholarships to the funding needed, a long with more expensive travel depending on the conference. You also have to maintain a 15,000 average attendance once every 2 years, which NDSU has done playing at the highest level in FCS but would they be able to maintain that being a middle of the road FBS program?

All about the subsidies ,take UMass for example, they had $58,440,119 in revenue and subsidies in 2023 and $57,649,039 in total expenses. They generated a small profit, which a lot of schools in FCS don't do. The conference with the lowest revenue and subsidies was the sun belt with $373,448,280. Breaking even or making a small profit being a member of a half billion dollar plus conference beats being in the FCS all day. Or in Umass' case be an independent and get paid 2 million per game by an opponent that wants an easy win.

You're totally right about UMASS. They've been garbage for about 12 years now. UMASS should trade with Richmond. Richmond should come to the FBS and UMASS should go straight to the Patriot League. Also, the Charlotte 49ers might as well do the same. In my opinion, they left the FCS division way too early.

My vote would be UMASS, UCONN, Florida Int'l, ULM, Akron, Kent State, and Vandy move down to FCS.
Jacksonville St. did well in 2023 in the inaugural FBS season in CUSA while Sam Houston (another CUSA team promoted to FBS) struggled last year. Then you have an incoming Kennesaw State team that has been struggling in FCS that is coming to CUSA in 2024 that I believe will continue to struggle while you also have a dominate Delaware team that is also coming to CUSA in 2025 that could make an impact in FBS.

Texas State and NMSU were good last season. ULM, Kent State and UMass should be going to FCS, as well as Ball State, and UTEP. Add South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Florida A&M, and Grambling State to FBS. All these teams have been good over the past 5-10 seasons. Let me know if you like this idea.

Unfortunately most of these teams are being carried elsewhere. New Mexico has a pretty good baseball team so there’s no reason they’d move down, same goes for Texas State(if Texas State wasn’t in the Sunbelt then 90% of the time it would be a given that Louisiana would win the softball/baseball conference every year, there are other good teams they just aren’t consistent enough every year). There’s many other sports that go into determining what schools stay and go but most of the sunbelt ones.
