  • Pentax's K-S2 is their latest entry-level body. Like Pentax's older (think back to the 1950s and 1960s) bodies, their entry-level offering is just as capable as their advanced offering. The K-S2 differs from the K-3 in functionality primarily in camera interface layout. At it's core, the K-S2 has the heart of the K-3 and the capability to carry a photographer as far as they would like to go with their craft or hobby. The K-S2 also provides, we hop, a glimpse into future Pentax cameras with wi-fi connectivity in the camera as well as a flip-out screen.

      venerando Buot You're very welcome. Sorry for the lag in response. It's been hectic. I just uploaded the third video (in three parts because it was too long for the software to render into even two videos.) I'm finishing the second video today and hope to have the first up within a few days. There's a lot to this camera. Unedited, the whole video series was about seven hours and it's about three to four hours of editing time per hour of video. But in short, your wait won't be much longer (the third video is live already.)

    I've been looking at both the K-S2 and the d5500. Usage will be mainly video, but I'd also like to use it as my travel cam for taking nice stills on vacation (or even just on nature walks). Since my main use was video I was all set to get the d5500, despite wishing for weather resistance for nature photography, as it is pretty much universally considered the better of the two for video. Then I saw this video. Looks like the video capabilities of the K-S2 are plenty good enough for my needs, talking head videos on a closed set. So thanks for the informative video and saving me a few hundred bucks! Now I can spend that extra cash on a telephoto lens for distant nature shots.

    Good info. Don't know if you'll see this but here goes: I am trying to use my K-S2 to live stream in Zoom for my students so they can see the drawing i am doing more clearly. I have it all set up but 2 things: 1) the camera keeps shutting off, is there a setting to change that and 2) is there a way to flip the image vertically so I don't have to dra upside down? I can't put the camera the other way as the tripod leg gets in the way of me drawing. Your thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.

      Thank you! Hmm. For the camera shutting off, I assume you mean the 30-minute limit, correct? If so, no. That's a hard limit that was programmed into all cameras (until recently) due to E.U. regulations. As for rotating the image, I don't know of a way in camera. It might be worth seeing if there's a way within Zoom (I'm far from a Zoom expert.)

    Hi I have a Pentax KS2 and have been asked to video a concert in an auditorium in low light. I have some concerns about leaving the camera recording for over 25 minutes because in some of the specs. it says 25 minute recording. Any advice. I realize that this is not the optimal camera for this project (regular person sick) Any info is appreciated. I have watched David's video, but most of the demos are outside in good lighting. Thank you

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 лет назад

      No DSLR that I know of will record longer than 20 minutes because of EU regulations (The EU's regulations affect everyone because it's hard to make different software for different regions, apparently.) So you're not going to be able to get an uninterrupted take of a whole concert.
      So let's assume you'll do it in takes of each song and that's okay. You need a FAST lens. A 50mm f/1.4, the 77mm f/1.8, or something along those lines will help a lot . If you use, say, the kit 18-55mm f/4-5.6 at 55mm, you'll have so little light that your video quality will be terrible since you'll need to record at nearly the highest ISO. With an f/1.4 lens you can probably shoot at around 1/30 for your frame rate and 3200 to 6400 ISO for your video sensitivity. That assumes really low light, so with the f/1.4, you may be able to get to 800 ISO. Anyway, a fast lens is definitely mandatory.

    • @MuddyTuesday
      @MuddyTuesday 6 лет назад +1

      David Hancock Thank you. Your reply is very helpful. I did video the concert with the 18-55 kit lens. I used auto with the AV setting but only went to f 4.5. The camera automatically stopped recording at 25 minutes with a 20 minute warning. The video doesn’t look too bad. A faster lens would be very useful for low light. I assume the faster lens would also help with better stills in low light with same environment? 😎

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  6 лет назад +1

      Thank you, and yes. A faster lens would help a lot. It might be worth finding a fast 50mm (these are the least-expensive fast lenses) to play around with. Fast lenses are interesting to use and addictive. :D

      +3plestrafe I think it's MF only. I don't have any SDM lenses, so I can't try AF during video with them. Screw-drive AF lenses do not operate during video because the motor noise would be picked up by the mic.

    Hello again! I got the camera and have been testing it out and am so far mostly thrilled, BUT: WHY OH WHY does the video shut off at 25 minutes... even with tons of battery and memory space remaining??? AND, is there any way to override that? THANKS! :)

    • @DavidHancock

      Ah, good question on the video. It cuts out because of the EU. Europe has a law that taxes, at a ridiculous level, and digital camera that records for longer than 30 minutes in a single take because they consider that a professional camera. So all the camera makers cut out their videos before the 30-minute mark. From a hardware perspective, there's no reason any DSLR couldn't do a longer take.

    hi david!!!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  9 лет назад +2

      Tarakant Pathy Well, admitting that I'm biased toward Pentax, I suggest the K-S2. The reason being that it has a single-piece chassis and weather sealing. Also, the sensor in it is fantastic. And at 20 MP instead of 24 you get (believe it or not) slightly more per-pixel detail. Also, the lenses for Pentax are a bit better and less expensive (for equivalent performance compared to Nikon. The K-S2 has a few creative drive modes that the D5200 lacks, too, so I think that the K-S2 can help guide a user into more creative photography.
      Where the D5200 can be preferable is that it's lighter. One of my friends who hikes a lot picked the D5200 because it's lighter (even though he liked the K-S2 better as a camera.)
      Honestly, though, if you pick the D5200, you'll like it a lot. If you pick the K-S2, you'll like it a lot. They're both great cameras.

    On a different review I saw something about the video not functioning properly when the LED screen is fully turned toward the front -- i.e., in full on selfie mode so that if I am in the video, I would not be able to turn the screen fully around to be able to monitor AS I am videotaping... is that something you found to be true about the KS2? Thanks! (SUCH a strange quirk.... AND, I'd mostly be using the video function for interviews in which I'd be in front of the camera, too; so, this answer is VERY important to me. THANKS! I'd say so for sure. Get a lapel mic (about $15 for a corded mic) to have better audio quality than the mics provide. If you're further from the camera than the cable allows, an RF mic would be a good option but a bit more expensive. Whichever you go for, they use a standard small mic port and plug right into the camera.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  7 лет назад

      Every camera will feel warm to the touch when filming lots of video. My K-3 will give me overheat warnings after an hour (ambient temperature influences this.) I've used my K-3 for up to six or so hours of recording in a day with breaks in between when batteries die. I think with the K-S2, you're more likely to be limited by battery life than heat for video work, unless you have a spare battery or two.
      Also, I looked up the video panel question to make sure my memory was correct. The Pentax Forums review indicated that video will record when the panel is flipped out.

      I'm not sure what the settings were. I THINK this was one of the last videos I made with Windows Movie Maker, which is not a good program for serious work (but is great for hobbyists and learners.) Everything I do now is AVHCD (I think that's the format, it's an MT2 file extension, archival high-def files I think it's called) at 1920X1080 (I think those are the numbers -- it's the highest setting I can set Vegas to) so the results on videos in the last 18 months or so are much better than the old videos.

Making videos with the K-S2 is very user friendly and the camera takes a lot of the concerns about exposure off your hands so you can focus on the creative elements.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  8 лет назад

      The video quality can work well, but you'll need to set the camera up for success. The entry-level Pentax bodies have a narrower window of conditions that result in successful video results.
      What kind of settings do you plan to use the video in?
      What lenses are you using?

      Mainly family, for a business social media account and RUclips. 1080p as that's what I previously shot in.
      I guess this is just new...
      Thanks for the quick reply

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  8 лет назад +1

      I'm glad to help. First thing is make sure that video shake reduction is enabled or your videos will have a LOT of jelly effect.
      Keep your ISO at 400 or less. Because of the reduced image size and downsampling, faster ISOs show noise more readily.
      You can use the kit lens just fine for video. I tend to use older lenses, manual focus lenses, typically without electronic contacts, for video. That allows me to force the camera to response in the manner that I want whether I shoot manual or automatic exposure. You won't have autofocus in video mode, at all, so another reason to use older manual focus lenses is that they're easier to use manually than new lenses.
      I forget how to turn off the auto exposure lock on the camera when shooting in aperture priority or program modes (I usually shoot manual mode regardless of the camera I use), but turning off exposure lock will help with changing light conditions. You can also shoot in manual exposure mode and use a nice, middle-range aperture and adjust it open when you go into darker lighting and close it when you go into brighter lighting. The best way to have success with your videos is to have even lighting conditions and experiment with settings for a while until you've found some that look good to you.
      Your keys for success will be a lower ISO, turning off the auto exposure mode exposure lock, and ensuring that you don't have video shake reduction on. The results can be good, and should meet your needs in most cases.
      The K-S2 has a hard time with bad lighting and harsh lighting in video, so I'd suggest avoiding those situations.
      If you want to expand into other lenses just for video, look at older SMC-M lenses like the 50mm f/1.4 or 28mm f/2.8, which are both super for video and usually run around $45-ish with some cosmetic wear. You can control all your video settings manually and achieve pretty good results with an older lens. It's a bit harder to use those with still imagery, however.
      You'll also want a decent microphone. Video errors have more correction ability (especially with software like Sony Movie Studio) than does audio. If your audio goes in bad, it will come out bad. I use a $15 condenser mic with a mini jack that plugs into the camera. For business, a mic would be a near-must.
