I had my Lumia 928 for almost 2 years, and back in December of 2014, I upgraded my OS from WP8 to WP8.1. The features are amazing, such as Xenon flash for photographs, panoramas for making Facebook cover photos, can actually read my phone screen when the sun hits the screen, Cortana can read me text messages while I'm driving and can reply back using my voice over my car stereo, the whole 9 yards.
Let's not forget the big blue box that pops up on the screen when ever the iPhone wants to alert you with something (if that has been fixed in later iterations then I apologies), as for functionality of Widgets and LT, they offer a lot more information than that, a notification center is not a proper replacement for quick glance information.
you did not mention the 140 db distortion free audio recording in loud settings, ultra low light camera when you were comparing cameras, you also didn't mention Maluba when you mentioned SIRI.
Iv'e been a three year andriod user, and I think I'm going with the 928. Is the app store getting better? Are there glitches. My droid 2 global is being retired due to glitches.
you mentioned Siri but didn't mention the great voice command functionality of the 928. Felt like you glossed over major advantages that the 928 has over the iPhone in order to try and portray the iPhone as still being relavent.
I remember switching from the Droid 2 to the Samsung focus, and just being blown away by how much faster windows phone was on almost the exact same hardware.
Thank you for doing a realistic review I am ver impressed. Never knew my Lumia 928 was so close if not better in performance compared to the IPhone 5!!!!
Nice unbiased review. Two, great operating systems that run smoothly on two cores, with no need for two additional cores; to compensate for fragmentation and lag.
How do they stop what you're doing? They seriously just pop up on the lock screen and show how many notifications you have on the icons themselves depending on whether the phone is locked or not. They may be different for iPhones 1-4 but on 5 it's fine. Actual widgets I've never found useful, unless it's for a newsfeed. It doesn't have to like a rainbow, it would just be really nice to be able to change the colors of specific icons, maybe put a custom picture behind it, even change the shape.
Interesting to hear the comparison of video capability between the 928 and the iPhone5 after watching your video of the 928 vs S4. In the S4 comparison you say the S4 screen is bigger/higher res and give [kudos] to the S4, but in this video those same qualities give the 928 no kudos worth mentioning. In fact, you say some may like the small screen. You also say that in realworld usage the resolution doesn't matter on the small iPhone, but it seemed to matter when the 928 was compared to the S4
well it's actually quad core with 2 chips and a question, what's the purpose of 8 cores when the performance and speed are just a little to no better than the ones on 2 core devices (Lumia and iPhone)? Just asking...
Yes there is, thanks to push notifications I can see any new info pop up on my phone without even unlocking it, have you even used the new iOS? I actually have used WP, partially because my grandma got the Nokia because of the screen size. My organization skills are fine, the fact that nearly every icon is the same color doesn't help whatsoever. Live Tiles has one special feature and that's "Quick glance information" and as I've already pointed out my iPhone does the same thing so... wtf?
Does anybody notice whether their 928 makes a low static popping noise after 5 to 10 seconds of being turned on? I thought something was wrong with my first phone (speakers) so I returned it, but the second one does the same exact thing. I'm not sure why it pops like that, but just very odd. Other than that, its a very solid phone. WP8 can use more work though (i.e. notification center, separate volume controls, better way to close apps then, back, back, back)...but yeah.
The most major difference is that the Nokia Lumia contains Gorilla Glass (highly resistent to scratches) which comes as standard across all Lumia handsets.
No they don't, you hear a quick tone and/or your phone buzzes alerting you that you have a notification, it doesn't stop anything. Widgets aren't really that useful with the current notification system, mostly because you can seriously get anything message related without even unlocking the phone, the only thing widgets are meant for is something like a facebook feed, and even then it only shows highlights. Quick glance information is not an issue with iOS, otherwise I wouldn't use it.
Very impressive camera on the Lumia! That is a real wide angle lens, visible in the video shot. Image stabilization helps as well with those low light shots, but the 6 lens setup makes the camera a winner.
Then you don't know how to use live tiles and how useful it is to get the information you need by just by glancing at the screen. Also there is no such thing as live tiles in ios or android there are just icons which is not much different then the way it is on desktop. And again what value does it brings to the overall experience by adding customization options to resize tiles beyond what one can do at the moment?
Nokia's apps not mentioned? Nokia HERE- Turn by turn navi even when you're offline. Same with Nokia Music- download a playlist and listen offline. That's key!
Its because it uses a Sharp IGZO display. Their displays are absolutely amazing and you don't need an HD display when the ppi is pretty good. Less pixels for the CPU to push while still looking sharp.
My family got Nokia 928's. For me, it's too bulky. For my wife, she thinks it's too bulky as well, and she and my son have had issues with them freezing up (4 times in 2 weeks). They end up having to do a soft restart on them. They have also lost contact with people (in good service areas) in the middle of calls, like the phone just hangs up on the person. I don't use mine nearly as much as they do, so I haven't had those problems. So, we're going down to exchange ours to Iphone 5's.
Maybe, but there is also people that can't see too good at the icons are about, and by just putting it simply as ever,it makes it useful,as the older population is rising.
I have the 928, it has all the apps and more than I need. I don't need 800,000 apps. Many apps in Android collection are either broken or have malware viruses. There is no app checking on that site. With WP8 all apps are screened, there are almost 200,000 now
No that's just a marketing scheme, saying that my s4 has an octacore is implying that my s4 uses all 8 cores at the same time, but hardware says that it cannot go over 4 cores at one time, so technically it has 1 really slow quadcore chip and 1 really fast quadcore chip. Source: I have both NA version of the s4 and the international version.
I like the personalization aspect of the Windows Phone. Also love it's software navigation. Love the live tiles as well. I'm a Zune fan, so that's what made me, initially, get a Windows Phone: because it has a Zune player on it. iPhone just seems like yesterday's phone to me because it seems like it's been around since the 80's. LOL.
Wrongo again, iOS has no widgets or live tiles, no quick glance information. Also the Live Tiles don't look messy, maybe the way you organized the live tiles (although I doubt you've ever used WP) made it seem that way, but it looks clean cut to most, so this whole "messy look" thing is clearly your issue. Again, I have pointed out the purpose of Live Tiles, is quick glance info, please come back when you have a valid point, please and thank you.
There is no blue box. Anyways with widgets, all they do is show highlights of your feeds, even if you have widgets if you actually want to find out more about something you're still going to have to go into the app itself. I personally would much rather lose the half a second that it takes to get into an app then waste space on my screen for widgets. The current notification system gives me all the info I need, if I find that I need to find out more I'd rather go in the app than use a widget.
I loved my Window phone and miss the platform very much. If your needs are simple and only want to use the basics of a smart phone platform, then I will highly recommend WP8 platform. If you want a smart phone that allows you to have connectivity to everything around you (functional apps, businesses, ect..) then with this platform is not the correct choice. It is a very fluent and well built OS and is wonderful to use. It all depends what your needs of a smartphone if it will be right for you.
The Nokia Lumia 928 is way better than the iPhone 5. It has a bigger screen than the iPhone 5, it handles apps in a nice way more than the iPhone 5, it even has a way better camera then the iPhone 5. It doesn't even break because of its cases! With the Nokia Lumia 928 it's smoother and easier than the iPhone 5. To me it's a great phone to have for a long, long time. You can have this phone the whole time you're around! That's how I think of it. No wonder it's also better than the samsung galaxy 4S. This phone has an appropriate size pixel-ware also. I hope you agree.
I have the Nokia Lumia 928 after owning a Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Jelly Bean 4.2) & an Applie iPhone 4S. I'm telling you my battery lasts twice as long as the Samsung and about 35% longer than my iPhone 4S. I remove my Lumia from the wireless charger every morning at 5 a.m. and go to bed at 10 p.m.,with well over 30% battery remaining with lots of use during the day too! Trust me battery life on the 928 is NOT a problem! Plus the Nokia Lumia 928 comes with a built-in battery saver program.
I had the htc 8x and upgraded to the 928. I've had numerous android phones before getting the iphone 4 and then upgrading to the 8x. After having all three, windows phone hands down for me, I won't be going back to the other two.
funny how when the iPhone 5 came out with a slightly higher screen PPI reviewers said it was much sharper than the competition yet now that everyone else has surpassed the Retina PPI reviewers say you can't really notice the difference. I'm really tired of iPhone biased :/
Push notifications aren't the same as Widgets or Live Tiles, you are completely missing the point. It's information that shows up on the homescreen through widgets per android or on LT per WP. Not to mention those push notifications were annoying as all hell, they would completely interrupt and stop whatever I was doing (iPhone 1-4 user). I don't see the issue with the Live Tiles looking unified and not like some fisher price rainbow. So, yeah the iPhone does NOT do the same thing so... wtf?
It's not an issue on the lockscreen, but when you are actually doing something they pop up and stop what you are doing until you dismiss them. If you don't find widgets useful, that's fine, but you're in the minority, so the lack of widgets or LT like quick glance info is still an issue for iOS. Some people agree with the color customization, and I think it would be a welcomed feature. However changing the shape really would make the UI look like a mess.
Ironically, I lost my Iphone. Still trying to find it, but if I can't find it, im either getting another iphone 5 or lumia 928. Currently going with the Lumia 928 because it is now free on verizon, compared to the iphones $200 price. Also, Lumia has double the memory. BUT, a big thing i want to know about the Lumia is if i am able to transfer mp3s and mp4s onto the lumia. I know i can do that on the iphone. Could someone please tell me. It's very important in my decision.
I strongly disagree. I run 3 small businesses and use it to connect to everything. With that said, I don't require my employees to use a specific phone. The only real drawback is that it's been a slow rise getting everything into the Windows Phone ecosystem. This past week, however, everything that I've needed has finally arrived. Microsoft Office, Innerfence, Jack of Goggles for marking potential field sales, Teamviewer, all social media networking apps; the list goes on.
What they really need to do with Windows 8 phones is give them better connectivity with Windows 8 PC's i.e. sync home screen tabs/ auto update calendar, reminders, and multimedia but that would be tough for Microsoft based on the fact that PC users use such a wide range of hardware.
Ok, so in the comparison between the lumia and the GS4, the screen advantage was given to the GS4 because it DID have the higher pixel density, but when you do the comparison with the iPhone5, it doesn't matter, but whereas the eyes can't actually tell the difference in pixels past 330 PPI, the iphone5 CAN'T play videos in 720p, whereas the lumia can, and it is clearly a brighter, clearer display. keep it level guys...
I do believe I said in one of my earlier comments that more color customization would be welcomed. However in the end it all comes down to preference, I prefer the one color look, as for having to read the tiles, you have to the same for iOS, that or remember what the icons look like, which is a possibility on WP as well. Widgets and Live Tiles save a lot more time than you think, when you just want to check weather latest news stories and latest posts on FB on iOS you'll open and close...
Android where you need every Spec you can get, trying to avoid crashs, and freezes of your OS. My sophomore daughter regrets getting an S3, but only stays for the Apps she's already bought. My Lumia 900 works great, and with very little learning curve to start. After I get my Freshman son a Lumia 928, which he chose over Android, then I'll get myself a Lumia 1020. By Mid-2014, I will get my wife a Lumia 1020, and my youngest son a Lumia 928. My oldest son is an iPhone5 owner, wanting a 1020.
the only thing i have against the lumia is the fact that the buttons are touch. i hate the way it feels and performs, plus, i usually use the home button on the iphone to "awake" it.
Live tiles are awesome. Much better then icons on android and ios not sure what value will be added by adding more customization options for the tile sizes.
He praises the GS 4 for its rich UI and iOS its simplicity. Sounds like he does not know if he likes it rich or simple, but he does know that he does not like WP8 - which is pretty simple yet very interactive UI, and should hereby be a good compromise for him...
I've been watching his videos for a long time, and he clearly seems to be an IOS secret fan, no doubt windows needs a bit more apps but has more room to grow than any other OS, I have a lumia 920, I cannot be happier after having android for 2years.
The Nokia Lumia may be larger, but that allows for a bigger screen. Additionally, the iPhone 5 is about double the weight of the Lumia, so that definitely takes away from the overall feel, as it makes it seem as though you're wielding around a brick in comparison.
I'm about to upgrade from an iphone 4 and I'm having trouble deciding between the Galaxy S4 or the Lumia 928. I'm leaning towards getting a Lumia 928. The only thing holding me back is the lack of apps...someone convince me please. I definitely do not want another iphone. Bleh.
Not really... you can change the size and move it around, it's essentially nothing more than a face lift to the old grid patterns of the iOS and Android. Add some more customization, specifically being able to change an icon to a single color and it would sort of be worth it, until then it's sloppy and useless.
You didn't compare the apps. I'm not getting a phone that doesn't have Instagram, Vine, or Snapchat. Plus, whereas the Nokia Lumia E29 comes with a price tag of a whopping $50, I played my cards right and managed to get my iPhone (4) for free when my dad got iPhone 5 and I got his old black iPhone 4. But then again, I guess you could say that the thing about having to change the phone every year is one of the iPhone's disadvantages, or "cons" if you will. I've noticed that typing this is a bit t
Its really hard to choose a smartphone to use for 2 years. I might go with the nokia lumia phone just cause the screen is a bit larger but not too big like the gs4. Also the camera is so much better then the iphone 5. I don't mind the lack of apps the lumia has cause I would rather the 100,000 good apps vs the 500,000+ good/crappy apps. Plus I am not a heavy app user I don't have pages of apps on my phone. I am using the iphone 4 for now until january of 2014 for my next upgrade.
He did not compare movie recording under extreme conditions. The Nokia 928 has very loud volume recording capabilities. This allows it to record even night club music without distorting. I made three videos between 6-12 min long that demonstrate that. search for " Nokia 928 Pig and Dan " The only light in the club was a laser light at the time but you can also notice that it recorede HD and was not shakey at all.. even while getting bumped around on the dance floor. But audio has no distortion
The Lumias are coming out with a siri like program called Cortana after the AI in the Halo series. The update for the technology should come out January 2014
wow you're right, how was it hard to decide the better camera? Obviously it was the Nokia, it has better lens and the screen displays it much better :O
Iphone 5 has a 1440 mAh battery and lumia has a 2000mAh battery so how come they perform similar? Iphone 4S sucks in battery life with a 1432 mAh battery so im really having a hard time believing that Iphone 5 would perform as similar to the lumia.
But the Nokia isn't a serious competitor, the GS4 is a serious competitor, the Nokia is one of those phones that will be completely forgotten within a few years.
all I'm saying is that if you havent owned a 928 or 1020 yet, TRY it. You will love it. It has all kinds of apps ppl. even some that are better and arentg offered on droid or iphone. try b4 u critisize. I owned an iphone first then two androids including the s4 and now a 928,. I dont think i'll ever go to any other platform after windows.
I can glance at my iPhone and get all the information I need as well, with an incredibly simple and easy to read layout. Live Tiles is just a messier, very slightly more customizable version of iOS. When it comes to the UI there is no reason to use Live Tiles, they are pointless.
The GS4 has a much larger display but is alot easier to hold than the Nokia so it's just logic...The Nokia 928 is just as tall and wide as the GS4 but it's alot more thick and it's shaped like a brick making it very hard to hold even though it's much smaller display. That's why he chose the GS4, the GS4 feels smaller than older GS3 which sports an smaller display (GS4 is volume wise in fact also smaller than the older GS3). Samsung managed to make the phone relatively small with a huge display.
Even in HD video, the 928 has a better camera than my 920, and even the 920 knocks the socks off the iPhone. OIS is something a handheld camera cannot go without - and the 928 has it, the iPhone doesn't.
When comparing the 928 to iPhone 5, the reviewer likes the iPhone's simplicity over the 928's customization. But when the same reviewer compared the 928 to Galaxy S4, he prefers the GS4's customization to the 928's simplicity. Go figure.
I had my Lumia 928 for almost 2 years, and back in December of 2014, I upgraded my OS from WP8 to WP8.1. can i get the lumia 928 prepaid
Lmfao, can't believe you actually use windows phone.
I think you may be one of the 4 people who do still...
'The iphone 5 is the easier to understand, more simplistic' LMAO no.
I like how in the IE browser, everything is bigger and much more up close but you still can see everything on the screen.
Let's not forget the big blue box that pops up on the screen when ever the iPhone wants to alert you with something (if that has been fixed in later iterations then I apologies), as for functionality of Widgets and LT, they offer a lot more information than that, a notification center is not a proper replacement for quick glance information.

I'm getting one of these on September 15th and I'm trying to figure out which one to pick.
Iv'e been a three year andriod user, and I think I'm going with the 928. Is the app store getting better? Are there glitches. My droid 2 global is being retired due to glitches.
John V! Missed this dude, good review.
you mentioned Siri but didn't mention the great voice command functionality of the 928. Felt like you glossed over major advantages that the 928 has over the iPhone in order to try and portray the iPhone as still being relavent.
Exactly, it's simple and straightforward. However on W8 all they added is that you can change the tile sizes... that's just so innovative
I remember switching from the Droid 2 to the Samsung focus, and just being blown away by how much faster windows phone was on almost the exact same hardware.
Thank you for doing a realistic review I am ver impressed. Never knew my Lumia 928 was so close if not better in performance compared to the IPhone 5!!!!

the screen difference is so huge, Webpages are so much more readable on the 928
I've had both and as a phone I loved the 928 much more except for the lack of certain apps.
For the lumia can u go on the Internet any where or not
Why does the Lumia's text in IE look so much bigger? I think thats pretty cool
Yes there is, thanks to push notifications I can see any new info pop up on my phone without even unlocking it, have you even used the new iOS?

i am big apple fun but lumia 928 better camera better display better baterry life + wirless charging so lumia 928 way better
Is the nokia lumia's back very flat please reply???
Its because it uses a Sharp IGZO display. Their displays are absolutely amazing and you don't need an HD display when the ppi is pretty good. Less pixels for the CPU to push while still looking sharp.
I was thinking about getting a new Android on Sprint this fall, but I'm really starting to dig WP8.
what do you prefer to you

I'm getting my lumia soon I was playing with it at Verizon it is truly amazing
Maybe that's because in comparison, there is practically nothing to customize with the iOS UI.

not biased at all. Apple does have a great product, but lumia is that flat out winner

Some people agree with the color customization, and I think it would be a welcomed feature. However changing the shape really would make the UI look like a mess.
but there's a small "bumo" at the back which makes it feel to be thicker than the i5.
Can iphone record 1080p?
Ok, so in the comparison between the lumia and the GS4, the screen advantage was given to the GS4 because it DID have the higher pixel density, but when you do the comparison with the iPhone5, it doesn't matter, but whereas the eyes can't actually tell the difference in pixels past 330 PPI, the iphone5 CAN'T play videos in 720p, whereas the lumia can, and it is clearly a brighter, clearer display. keep it level guys...
Is flipagram and instagram on there
White background on amoled display ??
Glossy and more slippery but overall more durable and less prone to scratching.
Sounds like he does not know if he likes it rich or simple, but he does know that he does not like WP8 - which is pretty simple yet very interactive UI, and should hereby be a good compromise for him...
... those apps, where with WP you just scroll through the homescrreen. Huge time saver. This coming from someone who has used and owned both devices.
Bleh.
lol, no. They also provide quick glance information. Something iOS severely lacks. That's the whole point to the Live Tiles.
i definitely felt the same bias, especially after watching his review comparing the 928 and galaxy s4
@Diogo Pinto I don't have an iPhone 5. I have an iPhone 4 (4 not 4s) and I got it for free. It was my dad's old one when he got an iPhone 5.
My dad said you can transfer all your iphone purchases to your windows phone, but I would look it up just to be sure....
You might want to compare the 32GB iPhone since the 928 has 32GB. That makes the price difference even more radical.
Now, that is what I am talking about! Productivity, and then have fun. A billion Apps don't matter, if you can't bring home the money.
He did not compare movie recording under extreme conditions. The Nokia 928 has very loud volume recording capabilities. This allows it to record even night club music without distorting.
I made three videos between 6-12 min long that demonstrate that. search for " Nokia 928 Pig and Dan "
The only light in the club was a laser light at the time but you can also notice that it recorede HD and was not shakey at all.. even while getting bumped around on the dance floor. But audio has no distortion
The Lumias are coming out with a siri like program called Cortana after the AI in the Halo series. The update for the technology should come out January 2014
looking to branch out from my iPhone 5, but verizon doesn't get shit for WP devices. I really want a 1520 or 1020, but im stuck with Verizon...
always loved NOKIA
and now with WP8, they have a awesome OS
NOKIA will come back and if I had any money I would put it in nokia stocks
wow you're right, how was it hard to decide the better camera? Obviously it was the Nokia, it has better lens and the screen displays it much better :O
Iphone 5 has a 1440 mAh battery and lumia has a 2000mAh battery so how come they perform similar? Iphone 4S sucks in battery life with a 1432 mAh battery so im really having a hard time believing that Iphone 5 would perform as similar to the lumia.
But the Nokia isn't a serious competitor, the GS4 is a serious competitor, the Nokia is one of those phones that will be completely forgotten within a few years.
its durable, and it doesnt feel plastic because of how glossed it is
-Lumia 920 user
all I'm saying is that if you havent owned a 928 or 1020 yet, TRY it. You will love it. It has all kinds of apps ppl. even some that are better and arentg offered on droid or iphone. try b4 u critisize. I owned an iphone first then two androids including the s4 and now a 928,. I dont think i'll ever go to any other platform after windows.
I honestly hate watching PhoneArena's biased reviews, I prefer PhoneDog's
I can glance at my iPhone and get all the information I need as well, with an incredibly simple and easy to read layout. Live Tiles is just a messier, very slightly more customizable version of iOS. When it comes to the UI there is no reason to use Live Tiles, they are pointless.
by then the luma 1020 will be here you should check it out
Glad to see windows getting more market share
the nokias a windows phone an windoes is Xbox and I'm on ps3, could i access psn on that phone
I know, he also forgot to mention the part where the iPhone also has more apps.
Go figure.
