  • Growing food in the city!
Always inspired by my friend Jack Hodge of Jack's Patch! Jack shares a similar passion for growing food, permaculture, and conscious living. Jack and I met a few years ago and connected because he did his Permaculture Design Course at the same farm as me in Costa Rica. I have gotten to visit his project the last few times I was in London and am always inspired by him, his passion, and all that he has created. Jack is vegan, zero waste, and passionate about all things sustainability and food!
I think that urban farming and growing food in cities is more important than ever as over half of the world's population already living in urban areas and that number is only increasing. We have to find sustainable solutions in cities too!
What started as an allotment, has now turned into a half acre no dig permaculture farm in London. Jack does activism and education both in his local community in East London and online. Be sure to follow along his journey on Instagram and if you're in the London area, reach out to volunteer on the patch or order a weekly veg box!

My main thoughts are gratitude for this and that I find it really great and inspiring. 😊 However, I had some difficulty hearing what he was saying at times because the motorway noise is so loud in the recording… And I’m wondering: why not further away from it? And aren’t you concerned about pollution from the exhaust pipes, tire particles…?

To answer your question, I used to live nr. Waterloo station, London in a housing coop. Our garden was right next to the local bus depot, with heavy traffic around the area. We had the soil tested for heavy metals, such as lead, thinking that exhaust fumes would contaminate. However, it transpires the fumes RISE & were not contaminating the strip of garden 😅
Also, there were allotments growing veg successfully, in the area, without contaminants. See Roots & Shoots.
