Pretty sure this is set in Jaws 4, so it would be in the Bahamas. This is also why there is an airplane sequence for the bonus level, and why you have to stab the shark with the boat at the end.
If y'all haven't played Jaws, you do not understand how insane it is that Jeff one-shot the damn thing at the end. The hitbox on that fucking shark is so finnicky that I was never able to stab him when I was a kid. Even when I did a TAS awhile back, it took a few reloads before I realized where the hell you actually needed to hit. And Jeff did it like it was nothin'!
He even wasted two out of his three strobes at the start! It was like Jaws felt sorry for him and just swam right into the correct spot. If you know what you're doing it's not hard at all, but usually it takes some patience as you wait patiently for Jaws to swim into the correct spot to stab him.
I like to think that when Jeff is on his death bed, and his life is flashing before his eyes, he will 100% think the words "Dinowarz: Destruction of Spondylous"
I don't really see Jeff's logic that Double Dragon 1 is better than 2. The latter is better in literally every way. Sure, the platform stuff is wonky but the first game's platforming was even worse. And the two-player simultaneous play alone makes it leagues above its predecessor.
"All of the combat just seems to be you baiting the attack out, and then walking in and attacking them" Little Ninja Brothers has been confirmed to be the first Souls-like.
Really appreciate that as we get further into this we're finding a lot more like, weird stuff that just has a form you wouldn't expect. And you can see why they might not be held up as a "lost classic" but they've got a certain charm!
Double Dragon 2 brings back such a specific memory of playing it with older family friend's kids and very tiny me needing them to jump the gap at the start of the second level for me every time. I haven't thought about that in years.
My specific memory of that game was when the game came out and having my dad call the one local rental place we went to a lot to see if they had it. They didn't at first, but called us a short time later and said they got one and they would hold it until we got there. A cousin and me played that game all weekend. Don't think we ever beat it though.
My math is most likely off on this one (going off of memory here) but I think this brings the total number of games Jeff has beaten on this show to 3 or 4? I can recall these 3 for sure: Jaws Lifeforce Trojan
Hell yeah Sword of Vermilion! Was my very first RPG. Always thought the combat was neat (though it hasn't aged very well). Now it's largely forgotten but will always hold a special place in my heart.
I have a love of Jaws that i will never lose. I had a terrible grandmother who was borderline abusive and gave horrible presents. For example for 8th grade graduation I got a briefcase. Then one random birthday i got a video game. Im sure she found it in a bargain bin but it meant so much because it seemed like she cared for once. I still pop that cart in a few times a year.
god I have SO much nostalgia for little ninja brothers, i dunno why but I LOVED that game but never owned it and probably only rented it once or twice but I still remember loving it so much. I couldn't have gotten that far in it either. I should play it again...
I think the main problem with Jaws, if we take it for what it is, is a lack of enemy variety and pattern complexity as the game progresses. Imagine if as you leveled up you kept getting new and more challenging encounters. It sorta does that already but poorly. I mean new enemy types, denser groups, more complex encounters, deeper maps maybe with actual varied geography, etc. Not just extra little sharks. It'd still be short and simple but that's ok. If it's just a shooter then do good shooter stuff.
Black Belt for the Master System was another fantastic Fist of the North Star game. IDK why North America didn't get the Fist of the North Star branding for that one, but it's one of my favorite SMS games.
You know, Jaws actually follows the plot of Jaws: The Revenge pretty closely. Its one of the finest Mario Van Peebles joints out there and also stars Michael Caine.
With apologies for being 'that guy', Tengen and Sunsoft actually put out different versions of Fantasy Zone, with the North American version being the worse of the two.
I feel like if you would rerelease Jaws with more choices in the shop and making Jaws stronger in-between playthroughs so you need score to boost your abilities it'd easily be Very Positive on Steam.
I'll defend DD2 for a moment: For all the objectively bad platforming, having beaten it a few times, it still *feels* far and away better to beat dudes up than in DD1. It is better than DD1. I'm glad he didn't get to the platforming section where you have to jump between moving gears and amidst jumping spikes though... I think he would have broken his controller.
There was another Fist of the North Star game that came out I think on the SNES that was rebranded in NA and it was interesting for its time. Wish I could remember the name. EDIT: I think it was Last Battle which was actually on the Genesis Also the bosses in this game have Warren’s spinning drop kick from Power Moves
When did the expectation that licensed movie tie in games would be a bit trashy come into the public conscious? My first console was the PS1, and there was the understanding that if it was a licensed game it wasn't going to be the greatest game in the world. Did people go into Jaws, expecting it to be this top tier videogame based on their favourite movie, or had the attitude of "Oh here's another throwaway game based on a film" solidified at this point?
The last couple of episodes have opened my eyes to the fact that I have a lot to learn about the science. If you'd had me watch the videos of Jeff playing Fist of the North Star and Mappy-Land without his commentary, I'd have thought the latter was the "likeable, but not good" game, and the former the irredeemable POS
Long time fan of Jaws for NES over here. I can't wait to be emotionally devastated by Jeff's take on it.
So? How do you feel?
@@LivingeidolonRocked to my foundation

Love the palm trees at the end of jaws, native to New England

He also landed on the hangar ship in Top Gun despite dreading it.
To be fair we were children.
Never let people tell you gaming journalists suck at games.

I like to think that when Jeff is on his death bed, and his life is flashing before his eyes, he will 100% think the words "Dinowarz: Destruction of Spondylous"
When his grandchildren ask him how his life was he'll start with if it was better or worse than Dinowarz.
It's my favorite recurring theme/game comparison. Just beating out Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man
I'm from the future, and Jeff's death is actually what kicks off the Destruction of Spondylous. We must keep this man alive as long as possible.
It's called fan service, man. I suspect the man actually knows how to pronounce Spondylous, too!
@@KoalopotiJeff may not be the hero that saves us from the Dinowarz, but it is the science that will lead us to salvation.
In Denmark, Jaws was called “Dødens Gab” - directly translating to “Deaths Yawn”
Oddly enough "Death's Yawn" was going to be the original name for "Operation Secret Storm". Fact.
The way enemies in Fist Of The North Star pulsate and explode when you punch them is one of the most insane pieces of animation on the platform.
Somebody should make an energy drink called “Dinowarz: Destruction of Spondylous” so it can be on both epic ranking lists.
I don't really see Jeff's logic that Double Dragon 1 is better than 2. The latter is better in literally every way. Sure, the platform stuff is wonky but the first game's platforming was even worse. And the two-player simultaneous play alone makes it leagues above its predecessor.
That Jaws game recasts Jaws as the hero, trying to take out the evil hunter who is destroying all the wildlife in the ocean.
Fist of the North Star's 5-second tracks make me wish *my* head would explode.
How serendipitous that Jeff would place 177 on the JAWS leaderboard while his cursor was still on 177 from the previous ranking.
One of the highlights of these streams, for me at least, is seeing the absolute breadth of RetroAchievements.
God does that Fist of the North Star game look like an upgraded Action 52 title.
Beating Jaws without the sub upgrade, Jeff continues to be a threat 😅

It's funny how, out of context, Jeff's review of Double Dragon II sounds by the end like he's talking about Doom Eternal
I now know a Super Chinese RPG exists. This video series has once again improved my life.

It's easy to forget Action 52 has 52 whole games so that can really throw your count off when it comes to how big the NES library really is.
One of them is even similar to Jaws. Oh, sharks.
I think the main problem with Jaws, if we take it for what it is, is a lack of enemy variety and pattern complexity as the game progresses.

Thanks to Jeff I downloaded Retroarch and am making my own personal list of ranked NES games.
Soooo, did Jeff just rank Fist of the North Star 177 and then immediately play Jaws and placed 177th on the leaderboard?
1:56:28
Just like the shrine entrances in Tears of the Kingdom. God I wish I could experience that game as a more pure being.
I obsessively played Last Battle on the Genesis when it came out, had no idea that there was an NES version, it's blowing my mind
You know, Jaws actually follows the plot of Jaws: The Revenge pretty closely. Its one of the finest Mario Van Peebles joints out there and also stars Michael Caine.
You know the Fantasy Zone OST is good when it’s still catchy even in neutered NES form.
Jeff took a Pit Fighter power pill before this one, what energy!
Jaws showing up right before the 4th of July seems pretty appropriate.
I checked on that Fist of the North Star game. The ending is just a credits screen with music. With some drawing to the right. Not worth beating it.
I knew it would happen! First completed game on the ranking.
Jaws, the original JRPG Random Encounter machine.
What level do we need to get your patreon to for you to do all the European and Japan exclusives?
The Jaws underwater theme always just sounded like someone took the '90s Spider-Man cartoon theme but made it almost monotone.
With apologies for being 'that guy', Tengen and Sunsoft actually put out different versions of Fantasy Zone, with the North American version being the worse of the two.
Considering that the NES Jaws game is based on Jaws: The Revenge, the assessment that the parts are better than the whole is quite appropriate.
I feel like if you would rerelease Jaws with more choices in the shop and making Jaws stronger in-between playthroughs so you need score to boost your abilities it'd easily be Very Positive on Steam.
Just a lone cowboy, riding into town on his tired horse, looking for a saloon in which to quest his thirst for the entire nes American catalogue.

"I don't know anything about Fist of the North Star." -Jeff, already dead.
For being a horror movie shark, Jaws looks completely overjoyed to be in this game.
He's just jazzed to be in the game
46:57 Jeff, thanks man. I needed that laugh!
"You would not take jaws over hydlide." Oh how absolutely wrong you are. Hydlide is way way way more annoying and overstays its welcome very quickly.
That Jaws looks like he just came back from the dentist
I love Jaws. I got my copy signed by the AVGN.
The music in Fantasy Zone really isn't that bad.
I felt somewhat helpful when Jeff used my turbo button knee trick in double dragon 2
Lmao never thought we would see Jeff beat a game on one of these streams 😂
Pirates: Legend of the Black Buccaneer is the other half of Jaws.
Jeff has unlocked the Currency Conch 1:14:31
DD2 strat- play the 2 player game that lets you damage the other player, it'll let you take their lives so you start with 6
33:02 as much as I disapprove of Battletoads & Double Dragon, I think I have even less time for Castlevania & Double Dragon.
Jaws used to freak me out some back in the day
